Elder Gays Tell Me About Robert Reed

Was it a tragic story? Did any of you just "know" as little gaylings?

Wasn't he a serious actor who resented the Brady stuff. How did his life play out in the media. Any career highlights after Brady?

by Anonymousreply 218October 13, 2022 12:03 PM

That's the best pic I've ever seen of him, OP.

by Anonymousreply 1October 11, 2022 2:32 AM

He looks really handsome in that shot

by Anonymousreply 2October 11, 2022 2:35 AM

Life in the closet caused him a lot of problems.

R2, He looks he fathered Bradley Cooper, that's what he looks like. I remember when going through my gay discovery phase I was watching a Bunch episode and thinking dayum, Mike Brady is kinda hot. Then I learned he was gay and stayed in my classic Hollywood radar.

by Anonymousreply 4October 11, 2022 2:40 AM

How will we ever know if he resented the Brady stuff, OP?

[quote] In fact, he often embraced his role and spoke about this with the media.

Oh yeah, that's ^ in the article you linked, but didn't read. Ya lazy scrote.

by Anonymousreply 5October 11, 2022 2:40 AM

I remember his episode of Biography. It was pretty sad. He was very closeted and got married young and had a kid. He lost custody of his daughter because of his sexuality.

by Anonymousreply 6October 11, 2022 2:41 AM

He sucked dick.

by Anonymousreply 7October 11, 2022 2:41 AM

R5, I think I need to be punished and fucked senseless. But real talk, other cast members particularly the mom have said this over the years. He warmed up to the shows legacy over the years but resented when filming while it was actually on, not syndication.

by Anonymousreply 8October 11, 2022 2:43 AM

He loved the actors on the show.

He hated the show.

by Anonymousreply 9October 11, 2022 2:44 AM

He was shirtless in the Hawaii episodes.

by Anonymousreply 10October 11, 2022 2:44 AM

Years ago a DL claimed to have hooked up with him back in the day

by Anonymousreply 11October 11, 2022 2:45 AM

I'm not convinced he was gay. Maybe bi but even that doesn't really line up with his life.

by Anonymousreply 12October 11, 2022 2:46 AM

Borrrring.

by Anonymousreply 13October 11, 2022 2:47 AM

Although I hate when actors have a great gig going and complain and criticize it. Easy money.

by Anonymousreply 16October 11, 2022 2:50 AM

I think we all know how this ends. Editor!

by Anonymousreply 17October 11, 2022 2:51 AM

Yeah, he looked great but then he permed his hair and that killed that look.

by Anonymousreply 18October 11, 2022 2:53 AM

I read one of the Brady kids memoirs—Marcia’s, I think. She said all the kids adored him and he would take them all on vacations with him. He came across as a very sweet, warm guy. But he really hated the show—fought with the writers constantly. But sounded like very professional fights about the writing making sense in terms of characters—not diva fits..

by Anonymousreply 19October 11, 2022 2:54 AM

R12 is trolling. There is always somebody who does that on these threads to go against established truths. He was gay and closeted, his colleagues and his daughter all acknowledge.

by Anonymousreply 23October 11, 2022 2:57 AM

R21, Oh wow. Interesting. I wonder if he won an Emmy for that.

by Anonymousreply 24October 11, 2022 2:58 AM

He was a huge bitch.

Fought with the writers on the show like he was debating Shakespeare.

He was a ridiculous person.

by Anonymousreply 25October 11, 2022 2:58 AM

It never dawned on me as a kid that he was a dick licker until I saw that episode of "Medical Center".

Then I remember thinking he must be gay, because no straight actor would take such a role.

by Anonymousreply 26October 11, 2022 3:00 AM

R25, hi there. Were you a set grip, 2nd assistant producer? Your venom seems quite personal.

by Anonymousreply 27October 11, 2022 3:00 AM

OMG. Was that a PERM? It was awful and funny.

by Anonymousreply 28October 11, 2022 3:01 AM

He was in a "Medical Center" episode where he played a man transitioning into a woman. At the end he was in full drag, makeup, wearing a dress. He didn't look like a woman he looked like a man in drag. But maybe that's the best trannies could hope for back then.

He did a tv movie where he played a warden who raped girls at the prison.

He did another tv movie where he played an obscene phone caller.

I guess he was trying to get away from being the good guy Dad image he has on the Brady Bunch.

by Anonymousreply 29October 11, 2022 3:05 AM

Buried in the same cemetery as Elaine Stritch and Karyn Kupcinet. It's a great trip for DL pilgrimages.

by Anonymousreply 30October 11, 2022 3:08 AM

He hated the original show but was oddly enthusiastic about all of the reunions they did. He even loved doing that absurd Variety Hour.

by Anonymousreply 31October 11, 2022 3:10 AM

Died in 1991 at the age of 59. He had colon cancer and was HIV+ which significantly contributed to his death.

by Anonymousreply 32October 11, 2022 3:17 AM

Sorry 1992!!!

by Anonymousreply 33October 11, 2022 3:18 AM

R11, Really? Did they follow up with details. A couple weeks ago someone posted Mark Wahlberg was bi and into black guys, and even liked being pissed on. When I asked for more info about such hot juice....crickets.

by Anonymousreply 34October 11, 2022 3:28 AM

He did not appear in the final BB episode that aired. And then the show was not renewed. The producers considered recasting his part if the show had continued.

by Anonymousreply 35October 11, 2022 3:29 AM

Florence Henderson said that she didn't know he was gay when she took the BB gig. It finally dawned on her when they were shooting the pilot because she could sense he was really apprehensive about kissing her. It took several takes. She then evidently went to Sherwood Schwartz and said, "This boy ain't straight."

by Anonymousreply 36October 11, 2022 3:40 AM

R36, she shouldn't have kissed him until seeing his entire medical physical and report.

by Anonymousreply 37October 11, 2022 3:43 AM

He blew me in the parking lot at a gay bar in Pasadena.

by Anonymousreply 38October 11, 2022 3:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 39October 11, 2022 3:54 AM

Like Liberace and many others death outed Robert Reed. While he did suffer from colon cancer and that was the mortal illness which took his life, Robert Reed's death certificate still notes he was HIV+ and that was a "contributing factor" in COD

I think he said he was pretty young when he hooked up with RR - like maybe 19. RR would have been at least 35 at the time. I think this was around the time Brady Bunch was airing or just after it ended

by Anonymousreply 42October 11, 2022 4:00 AM

Susan Olsen said he was masculine off camera too . He loved carpentry and camping . He also loved the arts . Back then it was a terrible time to be gay

by Anonymousreply 43October 11, 2022 4:04 AM

On the one hand, my heart goes out for Robert Reed in that he was slumming on a sitcom. On the other hand, he really coulda picked better battles.

by Anonymousreply 44October 11, 2022 4:11 AM

R36 I remember hearing somethibg similar, Flo saying something to the effect that he would get really nervous and uncomfortable during their bed scenes in TBB but now knowing he had a kid makes me think she may have been reading into it a bit since clearly he had been with women before.

As an aside I am an avid Mistery Science theatre 3000 fan and he pops ups as a protagonist in an oddly enjoyable 50's B horror movie called Bloodlust, he's very young and handsome here. Check it out, it's a hoot

R43

Oh I don't know; things certainly were a mixed bag.

Jack Larson, Hayden Rorke and others were openly gay, well they lived with life partners and pretty much much of Hollywood knew...., and seemed to get on rather well.

Of course much would depend one supposes on where someone saw their acting career going. Robert Reed as "Mr. All American Dad" thanks to Brady Bunch probably either would never have been cast as "Mike Brady" if he was openly gay.

Think those who managed likely learned not to want what they hadn't got.

Dick Sargent made the move, and largely nothing happened.

by Anonymousreply 64October 11, 2022 10:48 AM

With what's been posted here, you'd think Robert Reed hadn't had much of a TV career before TBB. He had trained to be a 'serious' actor. And yes, this was a thing in the 50s. He co-starred on The Defenders with EG Marshall for, I think five or six years. The Defenders was a weekly, Emmy-nominated, legal drama. And Reed joined NY's Actor's Studio while working with Marshall.

After that work and his stage efforts, yes, he thought The Brady Bunch was silly fluff (he did have a more serious, occasional role as a cop on Mannix) at the same time on and he would argue with writers to improve the scripts. So what if he did? He was an actor, working at improving how he was seen on screen with better scripts.

For a man born in 1932, coming to turns with being gay and calculating that acknowledgment on a career in film and TV would make 90% stay in the closet, which is/was really unfortunate.

I love that all of the kids from TBB remember speak fondly and highly of him. His daughter loved him as well. That is a nice legacy to leave behind.

Notice in some episodes of the Brady Bunch that Robert Reed gently spanks a Tush here and there, which I consider quite innocent in the way he did it in a father/child interaction way. He almost went for Florence Henderson at one point, but she coyly shielded her butt with her hands from behinf, you can see them both smiling laughing in the moment ... I have fond memories of the show, even today. :-)

I seem to recall reading that during the run of the show, his relationship with Sherwood Schwartz became strained because he wanted the scripts to be better. He had been a serious actor before BB.

After BB, he seems to have mellowed and changed his mind about it. His career definitely suffered as he got few parts after the show ended.

by Anonymousreply 75October 11, 2022 2:01 PM

Those stories about him taking all the actor kids on vacation together seem both really sweet and creepy as well. Like are we sure when they went to London he wasn’t sex trafficking Jan and Marcia to Prince Andrew or Peter and Greg to Stephen Fry?

by Anonymousreply 76October 11, 2022 2:44 PM

UCLA had (and perhaps still has) The Robert Reed Award for Shakespearean Acting. When I was there, he was a judge. One kid flubbed his monologue and covered by going into the song"Brush Up Your Shakespeare." Robert Reed was really kind and supportive, praise him for a great recover, etc.

When you read all of the Golden Girls inconsistency threads here, you have an idea of what he was up against. He wasn't fighting to make the show Shakespeare, he was fighting to make the show coherent.

Many years ago, someone posted that he had slept with RR. The poster said he was into leather, and became a real jerk after sex. Basically tossing the poster out.

He didn't like doing the show because the scripts were so bad, but he LOVED doing the variety hour because he loved singing. He had a decent voice, but nothing spectacular, and he knew it; but he also knew he would get to sing with someone with a spectacular voice (Florence Henderson) who would make him sound all the better. And plus Barry Williams, Geri Reischl, Mike Lookinland, and Maureen McCormack all had splendid singing voices too (and Susan Olsen's voice was perfectly fine--only Christopher Knight couldn't sing).

He was under contract (to Paramount, I believe), so it was probably this or not getting money or being cast in something equally horrible. Even if you accept the premise that the show was meant to appeal to kids, it made earlier shows like Ozzie and Harriet or Donna Reed seem like Ibsen.

Robert Reed Daughter REFUSES To License His Image For Brady Products

On all licensed "Brady"-related lunchboxes, T-shirts and other merchandise currently available (since it appears Brady stuff will always be available) Mike Brady has been rubbed out.

Not long before he died, however, Robert Reed took the advice of his then-lawyer Dan Kossow (a well-known entertainment attorney who also represented Adam "Batman" West) and refused to sign a deal with Viacom/Paramount that would let the corporation use his '70s-era visage on Brady products. The rest of the cast had agreed, so Viacom decided it could carry on without Mr. Brady.

Reed's estate is now handled by Chicago attorney Cary S. Fleischer.

"There's no question that his daughter and his grandson care deeply about his image," Fleischer says. "They're happy the Brady show is played and replayed, and sometimes, when someone wants to use his image for a charitable purpose, we say fine. But we take this very seriously."

Fleischer said he reviewed the Viacom/Paramount offer years ago and still advised Karen Baldwin (Robert Reed's daughter) not to take it. "I told her it would be to her benefit to keep these rights, that any money that could come from it was going to be insignificant." (When pressed, Fleischer says he considers $5,000 to be "significant" and that the merchandise potential was "a lot less than that.")

"The family has turned down offer after offer," Fleischer says, from producers and writers who want to tell the "whole" Robert Reed story: "A lot of the publicity about him has gone toward one part of his life, rather than the way the family wants him remembered."

And in this way, Mr. Brady abdicated part of his throne.

"Does it matter that he's not on T-shirts?" Fleischer says. "I don't think so. His presence still exists. He's the all-American father. He always will be."

by Anonymousreply 118October 12, 2022 12:38 AM

[quote]David Hedison said he was offered the part of Mr. Brady when they were casting the show and he turned it down, because after years of battling monsters on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, he didn't want to get stuck in a series where he'd have to act with kids and a dog.

R62 I always suspected that, too. What about Barry Williams? My Jewdar always went way off for him.

R61 no that was John Ritter. They gave him glasses and all that to make him look more “nerdy” and Bogdanovich-like. I never saw most of that movie though.

Even as a kid I sensed his discomfort in kissing scenes etc . I wonder if he was molested as a kid . Gay actors can be very into heterosexual love Scenes

by Anonymousreply 132October 12, 2022 2:33 AM

Yes only sex abuse victims might not to act well enough to fake a kiss…you’ve hit a nail on the head by Jove!

by Anonymousreply 133October 12, 2022 2:41 AM

Rumor has it that he liked the black boys.

He was very much like Tina Louise: very serious about his craft and probably shouldn’t have been on a corny sitcom. He got mad and stormed off the set of The Brady Bunch final episode and does not appear in that episode.

Fun fact: DL fave Joyce Bulifant was a serious contender to play Carol Brady.

by Anonymousreply 134October 12, 2022 2:43 AM

Even in OP picture. There is a distant , detached look

by Anonymousreply 135October 12, 2022 3:01 AM

Gene Hackman was supposedly the other choice for Mike Brady. I’m not sure if he passed or the studio passed on him but he was coming off an Oscar nod for Bonnie and Clyde so he couldn’t have been considered too unknown. You have to wonder if Reed knew Hackman was the other choice and was jealous since hackmans career really took off in 1970.

Reeds closest friend at the time of his death was actress Anne Haney who was a pretty prolific character actress and didn’t start acting until she was almost 40 and was Thelma Harpers nemesis Alberta meachum on mamas family.

Yes, it's almost as though he doesn't want to be there. He couldn't be compared with someone like Alan Rickman.

by Anonymousreply 137October 12, 2022 3:13 AM

R122, the thing about it is the Brady Bunch was not a hit during its initial run; it became a hit during syndication. It was a mediocre show with mediocre ratings. The Bradys were not household faces. I guess Reed was attempting to inject some life into a fluff show with mediocre ratings. The Bradys became huge during syndication hence all the one off specials and reunions. I guess Brady was pragmatic at that point; he wasn't A list so he could make some bank to live comfortably and still be a working actor.

Many of you shill for companies you do not like making a whole lot less.

by Anonymousreply 138October 12, 2022 3:23 AM

I believe the ratings suddenly shot up when he got the perm.

[quote] r12 I'm not convinced he was gay. Maybe bi but even that doesn't really line up with his life.

[quote] r20 [R12] is trolling. There is always somebody who does that on these threads to go against established truths. He was gay and closeted, his colleagues and his daughter all acknowledge.

Hmmm. I see that a lot here. Anybody who disagrees with the perceived hivemind's version of truth is labelled a troll. Don't contradict us!

He's not trolling. Reed has a biological daughter. His bisexuality is evident.

by Anonymousreply 148October 12, 2022 4:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 150October 12, 2022 4:54 AM

Well I guess if you consider bisexuality because he produced an offspring from a marriage he didn't want to be in. We must remember the times. Most men got married back then, even closeted gay actors. Was he ever linked to any other women. I mean I do see your point. I mean suppose Richard Simmons had a one night stand with Liza 30 years ago and she got pregnant with twins. Would we consider Richard Simmons bi?

by Anonymousreply 151October 12, 2022 4:54 AM

r151 I guess my larger point here is that one is not a troll merely because they "go against established truths". "Established truths"? Haha.

I mean c'mon, r20 's boast that he knows the truth and there can be no other opinion spells BLOWHARD. And I'm not even gonna dismiss r20 as a troll.

Reed may be as gay as Richard Simmons and the sugarplum fairy. But he has a daughter. It's not trolling to suggest he might be bi.

His career was not going to take off like Hackman's. Hackman was a character actor who was able to play leads and he could do comedy. Reed belonged on an hour drama like "The Defenders".

Schwartz, like everyone else gave people standard contracts and, with mediocre ratings, there isn't much room for re-negotiation. Esp. in those days, it was a gamble to sign on to a series---if it flopped, you made rather little for a year. If it was a hit, you might make a little for a long time, but could do personal appearances and probably get a percentage of merchandising. Real stars had percentage ownership deals---again a gamble because there might be nothing to syndicate---but they did it to avoid high marginal taxes as much or more than to make more money overall.

R95, Bacall's voice was deeper.

Howard Hawks, the director of her first movie, thought her voice wasn't husky, if you can imagine. It didn't fit the film character and her image. She lowered it. Then, the years of smoking further deepen her voice.

by Anonymousreply 180October 12, 2022 7:35 PM

I think OP’s photo was from an episode of “Family Affair”. Specifically season 1, episode 14, titled “think deep”. RR was a hippy dippy teacher of niece Cissy. She fell under his spell based on his dreamy looks and bedroom eyes,as did I when I saw it in syndication years later. Did not realize until later it was Mike Brady.

Of course, Uncle Biiiiil set Cissy straight so to speak. I think French had a crush on him. I did.

I can’t think of many shows, if any, where the majority of the cast has reunited for a new series (like their variety show) or a retrospective (the 35th anniversary reunion special) multiple times. Think about it. The show premiered in 1969 and they appeared in A Very Brady Renovation in 2019. That’s a 50 year span. People loved the show and the actors. I do as well. I grew up with them.

I've heard from people who were around the business back in those days that even though he was deeply closeted, he was pretty much a sexual athlete on the same level as Rock Hudson.
