We're trying to fill in missing pieces without enough details. He didn't say his roommate was blackmailing him so there are a number of options. Here are a couple of other possible scenarios:

1. He got caught up in one of those sexually explicit catfishing situations where someone says they're going to send the photo to everyone on his computer and his parents, unless he comes up with $500 bucks to send them immediately. He asks his roommate for the money, gets turned down and, despondent, he kills him. (It seems I read about one of these deals at least once a month, where a kid kills himself over these sort of internet blackmail deals, so people seem to get really desperate in these situations)

2. His roommate caught him cheating on a research paper and says he's going to turn him in unless he gives him money - lots of colleges have zero forgiveness policies on academic cheating now and such a thing would result in immediate expulsion.

3. Indian guy has some enemy as school who plots an elaborate revenge on him, by getting dirt on the Korean and threatening to use the dirt to get him put in jail or something worse, unless he kills the Indian guy.
