Say Yes To The Dress

Anyone a fan of this show? Is it a guilty pleasure watch for you? Would you or a friend go on it?

Gok Wan is a fun host, but I'm not really certain what his qualification is to assess wedding outfits specifically. The episode with the lesbian couple who wanted complementing dresses is my favourite; the woman are so pretty and clearly besotted, plus they have lovely supportive families and good taste.

OMG. I love this show. The earlier seasons (and staff) were best. Surprisingly, in all these years I’ve only seen about 4 wedding dresses I could stomach wearing if I were a girl.

(But that just shows how deeply customers feel about what they envision.)

^^ ^^ should also say I only consider the NYC one set in Kleinfeld to be the show. I [italic]eschew [/italic]the London and Atlanta ones.

It takes a lot of money to look cheap.

The prices are astronomical at Kleinfeld and the gowns usually look sleazy.

Is this the accursed gown?

It's not sexy or expensive looking.

Oh jebus. Yes, that’s it. It’s so awful, and that in-house designer does it in a million variations.

It’s ever worse when it’s loaded with a million huge rhinestones and crystals.

R4 I'm pretty sure Israeli desinger Pnina Tornai is just living out all of her whore-bride fantasies vicariously through the classless trash that purchases her overpriced hooker costumes masquerading-as-wedding garb.

I haven't thought about this show in years. Is it even still on? It's all staged garbage, but I DO like Randy.

Had a geeky shy Uni housemate who was obsessed with this show and loved roasting it. She was a talented crafts/makeup artist as well as an aspiring bridal planner, who also loved cosplay & costumery, so I suppose it spoke to her interests.

It was fun to watch with her and hear her takes on the dresses, because she had a lot of practical insight into how they’d probably been made and how much they were probably marked up. The wedding dress industry make out like bandits, honestly.

Bride spends $200,000 on Pnina dresses.

One thing that’s interesting from the show is if a customer has really ginormous breasts, they’ll have to pay a LOT to have the standard pattern recut by the manufacturer so it will fit them.

Sad!

Pnina Tornai looks like shaving cream and 🚽 paper

R9 ugh, so fug, all those gowns.

A trend I especially loathe in wedding dresses is the cleavage split that goes right to the navel. Who popularised that, and why?

R10 my mum has offered me her expensive couture (but frankly ugly and froofy) 80s wedding dress should I ever get married.

Even if I liked it I couldn’t wear it, though, because I have double Ds/Es (depending on the brand/sizing of the garment) and my Mom was never that big in the chest. I wouldn’t get this dress over my nipples.

Thankfully it looks like a Lady Di toilet roll cover anyway, so I’m not losing out.

Surprisingly, in this one great French fashion advisory book (“Elegance: A Complete Guide for every Woman Who Wants to Be Well and Properly Dressed on All Occasions” 1964) the somewhat conservative author wrote, “V necklines are never really chic unless they are cut very deep, almost to the navel. A weight is sometimes sewn there to help it hang flat.”

So it might look slutty as all hell these days, but it also has a surprisingly classical pedigree.

The book’s author Genevieve Antoine Dariaux spent a lifetime in the world of couture and for years was head vendeuse at Nina Rici. It’s a very well informed book with lots of tasteful insights. I love it.

I’m always surprised at the sales employees who end up leaving Kleinfelds. You would think it would be a dream job.
