The attacks on Billy Eichner are really bothering me. He is a trailblazer for gay men, giving us much needed representation, and this is how we treat him? It’s hard to believe this is even a gay forum anymore.
Why are we attacking one of the most successful and well-known openly gay men of all time?
by Anonymous | reply 178 | December 15, 2022 3:35 AM |
No idea where all this venom is coming from. I didn't particularly enjoy the movie, so I only posted two or three replies about it on DL and then moved on. Can't imagine constantly posting about something or someone I dislike, seems unhinged to me.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 8, 2022 7:49 PM |
It's not all self-loathing. We've been invaded by conservative trolls for decades. But it really ramped up with the era of Trump, king of trolls.

OP, you are talking about Billy Eichner, not Sir John Gielgud.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 8, 2022 7:52 PM |

OP is one of Guy Branum‘s sentient head moles.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 8, 2022 7:53 PM |
His personality is not likable. I saw some clips of billy on the street . He was rude and aggressive towards strangers, like a bully.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 8, 2022 7:59 PM |
OP, I give you a 10/10.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 8, 2022 8:02 PM |
I liked Billy Eichner before Bros. His short videos were fun and had spontaneous New York energy. But after seeing the film, which despite all the "authentic casting" and all that, was surprisingly conventional and not very funny. I went in wanting to like it and was disappointed. And he in particular was annoying and unappealing. Shrill and falling back on stereotypes. And I hated the ending. He SINGS A SONG? Oh for fuck's sake. And it's a COUNTRY song. Kill me now. And way too hot Luke "realizes he was wrong" and gets teary eyed. Ugh. Not for me. Sorry.

“Successful and well known”?
He got a TBS show off of some YouTube videos, then did a Hulu show that no one watched. Half of my gay friends have no idea who he is beside “the guy who screams questions on the street.”
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 8, 2022 8:28 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 8, 2022 8:33 PM |
R10 I’m no big fan of his, but you’ve missed the point of what the OP is saying. Regardless of your opinions of this one individual man, on DL if you!re out and gay, and WORKING, you automatically become a figure of ridicule and disdain. Bomer, Billy Porter, Neil Patrick Harris. Doesn’t matter, it’s like they become public enemy #1 on the DL. Why? We can’t whine about lack of representation and then constantly shit all over those that are trying to give it to us. Cut the man some fucking slack. Are you really delighting in the box-office failure of Bros? There are far worse movies that have become big hits. And you know that it’s just going to be that much harder to get other gay stories bankrolled going forward. If that pleases you, as others have said, you’re either a ring-wing troll or a self-loathing queen who wants everyone to be as miserable as you are. Maybe both?

Elton John has a bigger straight fan base.
Possibly George Michael because he was totally unashamed and amusing about his sex life.

This also applies to James Corden. But show business is full of these kinds of people.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 8, 2022 9:07 PM |
We are "attacking one of the most successful and well-known openly gay men of all time" because the prime directive of Datalounge is to hate, and to express that hatred as loudly, as meanly, and as often as we possibly can.
I often feel like an outlier here, as the only people I hate are Defacto and Madonna.

It is a bad look for gays, especially those who LOATHE Republicans. Billy went way above and beyond for the last few election cycles.
Eichner is a Democrat. On February 1, 2018, Eichner announced a new initiative called Glam Up the Midterms, during that night's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, in conjunction with Funny or Die and with the support of several late night hosts including Sarah Silverman, James Corden, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O'Brien, John Oliver, Chelsea Handler, Robin Thede, and Andy Cohen. Glam Up the Midterm's purpose was getting people to vote in the November 6 midterms, especially millennials, of whom only 12% voted in the previous midterm election.[27][28][29][30] Eichner joined the progressive political organization Swing Left as senior advisor starting in 2019[31][32] and endorsed Elizabeth Warren in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries.[33]

This place gives the impression that despite a collective love of cock and/or man-ass, there are quite a few gays that just do not like other gays. Thankfully, I limit that view on just Dataloungers and not the gays I know in real life. Although R31 is absolutely correct, bottoms don't like other bottoms - on DL and beyond.
And hey, Shit Brickhouse Troll at R13! Part of the reason why SBT is my favorite DL character of all-time is that the persona really encompasses so much DL sentiment into one over-the-hill, overweight, hates-fems-despite-being-überfem, str8 guy worshipping, 'strict bottom' package. With a puny cocklet.

You're right, r60. It's not. Between that one self-loathing gay creep and the rightwing trolls, there's an absolute ton of homophobia on here. I also think there's someone who has been trying to get DL taken down, but I can't really prove it, it's just a feeling I have after seeing a plethora of weird posts about putting body parts in suitcases, taking meth and gunning down an ex, posting photos of murdered babies, certain comments about the FBI that I wouldn't personally advise anyone to make on a public forum, things of that nature. Something is really wrong around here.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | October 9, 2022 6:40 AM |
Wow, what creepy threads do you hang out on, R74? I haven't seen any of those posts.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | October 9, 2022 8:43 AM |
For the same reason we at DL now also hate Viola Davis and the meth head weatherman. DL does like like people with a sense of entitlement who play the victim and scold others to try and get their way. Billy showed his ass with his whole “you are a homophobe is you don’t see mu film” shit. Why should people have to spend their hard earned money and their limited free time to go see a movie just because it is about gay people? I have ambivalent about it before but all that I decided not to see it for sure.

Beyond this, people attack him because he attacked us first. It's self-defense on our part.
Helpful Life Tip? Don't antagonize your own peole, at least not without expecting them to defend themselves right back.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | October 9, 2022 10:34 AM |
You must be new here OP
There is a cadre of sad, unhappy DLers who make themselves feel better about their own sad lives by tearing down anyone and everyone.
There's "pointless bitchery" and then there's pathetic and too often the discourse veers towards the latter.
Think of all the posts about objectively good looking Insta-Hos where DLers will tear down the guy's looks ("his left eyebrow is crooked. Pass!")
There is particular vitriol for any successful out gay man -- I suspect many of the DL Haters have justified their sad lives by convincing themselves that it was because they were gay and a successful gay man puts lie to all that.
Look at all the hate for Pete Buttigieg.
There's no winning either-- the successful gay man is either too swishy or not swishy enough, too tall, too short, too fit, too out of shape...
The word "entitled" comes up a lot too, which indicates a level of class resentment from the Haters.
With Eichner, there's also a healthy dollop of antisemitism, not uncommon with older DLers - "Hiss! He's not WHITE! Hiss! I may be a loser shop bottom stuck in my parent's house in Flyoverstan, but at least I am White and not a Jew!"
All of the above will be denied with "I just think he is a terrible actor and he annoys me. Why can't I express my opinion?"

Billy is one of the most talented actors ever. He also had a lot of pain and struggle throughout his life. Despite that, he has a good heart, which is hard to encounter in Hollywood. At a time when gay men are oppressed beyond belief, they identified with his struggles and he theirs.

by Anonymous | reply 87 | October 9, 2022 11:52 AM |
It's not comments r75, it's threads.
For example, there's an MRA troll who starts out with typical "women are all awful" and over the course of days escalates to saying he's going to murder all women and take out an office building and then posts photos of dead babies.
He got the content of his posts deleted but the threads remain. This was one where he said he was going to go on a shooting spree.
People like r78 who say this shit doesn't happen on DL are probably the ones posting this shit on DL.

What’s disturbing is how right wing media grifters are now making remarks on it as well, and they are using Billy’s comments to attack all gay men. Pretending straights are somehow “oppressed” by what he said and this is “heterophobia”… (eyeroll). This is why I don’t like the public berating some gays do towards other gay men, homophobes think it gives them a free pass to attack those gay men as well.

R80 The Mayor Pete trolls are a perfect example. If ever you would think there is a public figure we could all get behind, you’d think it would be him.
Partisan politics aside, he is objectively smart, funny, attractive, gracious and very successful. A most excellent role model by even the strictest standards. Not on DL apparently. The hate is coming from the fact he was forcing a mediocre film on the world in OUR name and saying if you don't go see it you are a homophobe. AND he was doing it for his own benefit to advance his career in Hollywood. He used the past struggles of gay people to promote himself. That is where the vitriol is coming from.

It's sort of fascinating how vitriolic and hateful the people ostensibly complaining about vitriol and hate here are.
You would think if they **really** decried vitriol, they would themselves be more upbeat and not so quick to shame others. I suspect that some of these posters are actually loving this opportunity to angrily scold other Dataloungers.

I agree OP. I don't get all the hate. I was just thinking to myself earlier that how much less I'm enjoying DL in the last couple of years. It's filled with so many of the kind of folks that I have always hated to be around - people tearing others down who are more successful and well adjusted than they are because they're too afraid to look at their own behavior and realize what a turnoff their shitty, self-loathing attitude is. It's clear that none of the assholes ripping Billy and BROS to shreds have the faintest clue as to how difficult it is to do what he's accomplished. They wouldn't even get past the first to do list or phone call. Oh well, let them live in their stupidity. It's just sad that this place has been taken over by them.

What a complete load.

I plan on seeing the film. I thought all the outrage was about to be that it plays like a Hallmark film or something along those lines. I think Billy is handsome myself, even if he does wear a "hair system", or some sort of weave as DLers claim.
On some episodes of "Billy On The Street" I did find him to be a bit over the top, but I told myself he was just being himself, and it probably wasn't perceived as cringeworthy as I found it to be at times. Boy was I wrong on that score, according to DL! I still like Eich, for whatever it's worth.

R109, I actually like Billy Eichner as an entertainer I think he is funny. I've liked him ever since "Honey Badger." But Bros looked really bad. I couldn't even get through the trailer. I can understand him trying to promote it as a unique one of a kind film. But terrible writing and probably bad acting killed that film - not homophobia.

From the little I know from barely following this, it seems that Billy is a bit of his own worst enemy and should go and calm down and have a word with himself. Otherwise, I don't really get the extreme hatred for him, either. Also, I think he's good looking, I don't know why people are saying he's ugly. I wish I were so "ugly". It's because of his behaviour that I find makes him less attractive to me.
[quote]DL used to be a place where you'd find really, really great, clever wit.
I've only been here a couple of years, but I did find some older threads awhile back on things like Michfest and Meredith Talusan/Chrysanthemum Tran that I legitimately bust a gut laughing. There was a lot of very clever stuff on there, and while some people were nasty in those threads, for the most part the idea was more having fun, taking no prisoners type humour. I don't see as much of that on here now, though the story about "Caraline" and her "voz" did have me going for awhile.
A few months ago I might've said someone saying this was mistaken, but now I can't deny that I feel that there are a number of people who post here aren't actually gay men or lesbians but are trolling us. Some of the homophobic comments here you would never hear a gay person say, and seem to be straight out of the pre-marriage equality days. There's just something a bit "off" about a number of the posts here these days.
Also, I actually really enjoy being teased, but being yelled at, even in response to something totally uncontroversial or even nice that you've said, it pretty tiring. I get enough of that from the public in my job, let alone wanting to put up with it in my free time.

I saw Bros in the theater today - had off work for the holiday. Actually it was very funny in the beginning, and lost some steam for me later. Billy’s character has a strange absence of loved ones- not only no mom and dad, but also no siblings or close friends- which when you think about it is both alarming and sad. Aaron, the love interest, has an old teammate crush, parents, and a brother, and we find out he played hockey, likes Garth Brooks, a bunch of small details; but we never find out that kind of detail about Billy’s character for some reason, which is why the second half of the movie didn’t work as well for me.
Ultimately it did make me laugh, especially in the beginning, but the love story didn’t entirely work - just because there wasn’t enough storyline there - and it didn’t make me cry.
Still, I don’t regret seeing it and probably enjoyed it more than anything else I could have chosen in the theater right now.

When we attack Ian McKellen , Neil Patrick Harris, Dennis O'hare, Matt Boomer, or NATHAN LANE then we are attacking the most successful and well-known openly gay man of "all time".
I suspect you knew that though concern troll. I even limited my retort to currently living actors. Gay or Straight OP, bad movies are sometimes just bad regardless of the actors, writers, and directors.
Billy is taking a page right out of the all female Ghostbusters reboot .

[quote]I thought it was weird that both Billy's parents were dead in the film.
Then it's strange that he worked so hard to alienate his new BFs family with that cringy Christmas dinner lecture. Was the character supposed to be autistic that he thought that was in ANY way appropriate?
by Anonymous | reply 156 | October 11, 2022 10:46 AM |
R156 In another thread it was said that Chris Evans could have been in Bros and another user on here once mentioned that Chris' real life mother is allegedly too clingy. Maybe this scene was written based on that information when he was still in the project and was it basically a real life tutorial on how to get rid of annoying parents?

That's a big reach, R157. And why conjure up a weird, unlikely scenario when the truth is so obvious---that this douche (Billy) thinks it's okay to alienate everyone with preachy lectures.......including his audience.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | October 11, 2022 4:04 PM |
Saw the movie. Liked Luke MacFarlane. Not familiar with Billy Eichner until the film. Found Eichner angry, preachy and generally off-putting: both as a protagonist and creator to promote the film.
The quality of the film was.....disappointing, to say the least. But it is understandable for someone like Eichner (who put everything into it) to observe it flop. Rather than blaming the audience, perhaps Eichner could use this experience for some soul searching. Perhaps people don’t find angry, blaming and shaming-protagonists attractive: both on and off screen.

Billy looks masculine and attractive here, not loud and annoying like his movie role but he has a wide-cheek face. Is this caused by alcohol? Does that make him a bear? Maybe he should work on a more quiet persona for Bros part II? Do you agree with her that the movie was relatable to straights? Does she mean the foursome?
by Anonymous | reply 162 | October 11, 2022 4:55 PM |

[quote] Do you agree with her that the movie was relatable to straights? Does she mean the foursome?
I’m straight, R162, but have family and friends who are gay, so they consider me “gay-adjacent”.
That said, I grokked Bros. However, several of my straight (non gay-adjacent) friends did not. The sex scenes were too much for some who are open Americans (hence seeing the film), but with the invisible Puritan thread running in their mindsets. Think it may be different in other countries, though.
I do believe the film could have been made with far more nuance and sophistication....for a much different outcome. On some level, I feel badly for Eichner as he seems to have invested his heart and soul in the production. Yet, he comes across as boorish on and off screen. Hard for most straights (and some gays?) to identify with his persona.
There were parts of the film that did work. As mentioned above, Luke seemed to rise above the fray and his acting seemed genuine. If the film would have capitalised on this and added characters that were similar rather than screechy, cacophonous complainers (everyone from Deborah Messing to Eichner), perhaps the film would have not come across as tawdry.

R154, yes, both his parents are dead in real life; his mother of a heart attack when he was 20 and his father from from leukemia when he was 33. And apparently his parents did take him to a lot of shows when he was a kid, and let him see movies that were “age inappropriate,” so that scene with Aaron’s parents could have been interpreted in some way as trying to defend his own deceased parents and the way they raised him. But I wish he would have had lines about his parents in the movie itself, more than just a couple saying they died. And more about himself too.

Billy Eichner is; - one of the most successful and well-known openly gay men - a trailblazer for gay men - much needed representation
He is none of the above. I am cultured, learned, well-read, gay, and I’ve lived in NYC for 19 years. I had never heard of this person until his bomb landed a few weeks ago.
