Why can’t you believe it?

This was one of Billy Campbell's first roles after playing Steven's lover, Luke, on Dynasty.

So, we pegged Billy as being gay in our minds and had a hard time believing him as straight. I happened with many of us back in the day.

Billy went on to play straight in the Rocketeer a few years later. I had no problem seeing him as straight in that movie.

I thought he was perfect in the role. He was in the running for Riker too.

Is he a gay?

He'll always be Rick Sammler to me.

Billy came off as passive and sexless. The opposite of the character Okona. R4 He's supposedly straight in real life, but when he plays gay, it seems more genuine. When he plays straight, it seems false to me.

Billy was quite believable playing Dr. Jon Fielding in the Tales of the City miniseries.

Also very believable as Rick Sammler in Once & Again.

R10/13, in the "early aughts", the joke was whenever someone would try to say someone was gay, someone else would deny it by saying "Notorious pussyhound, big Bush supporter." Liberace? Notorious pussyhound, big Bush supporter.

Kove was a big stud, but Chris Cagney or Mary Beth Lacey always had to save his ass.

I remember watching that episode as a twelve year old and having strange…feelings toward him. He was really cute. Rewatching the episode quite recently, he’s still cute but it’s a really godawful episode in every respect.

As a gayling, his name was one of the first things I searched when my family got the internet, and I recall being both disappointed and surprised when I learned he was not gay.

I remember the episode of cagney & lacey, called "saturday matinee" about a stripper seducing and ripping off old women. the episode showed the pair going to a male strip club and seeing a bunch of male strippers on stage (all gorgeous)... Even then at the time and especially now decades later, I thought "why didn't they have martin kove's character go "undercover" as a male stripper joining this group??! it would have been so damn hot to see kove shirtless, in the bowtie and black spray painted on spandex pants and nothing else and then HAVING to do a strip routine (hey, that wasn't part of the gig!") to make his "undercover" job legit and take suspicion away!..

I seriously doubt r10/r13 was on Datalounge then if he does not recognize that longstanding joke. It would be like not knowing about the little girl who kisses her doll and says "King Kong will stop the rain," or not knowing about Cheryl.

They’re resurrecting the character on one of their animated shows. Never say never.

Riker came down to Jonathan Frakes, Billy Campbell and Christopher McDonald. Both Campbell and McDonald would go on to have guest starring roles on episodes.

Okona was supposed to be a lovable rogue, a la Han Solo or later Mal from Firefly.

Billy Campbell doesn't really have the swagger. It would be like having Patrick Stewart play a captain like Kirk, rather than a more cerebral captain like Picard.

I hate when actors playing gay are called brave, but it was for him to do the double with Dynasty and Tales of the City, though I suppose Rocketeer was such a flop, he was probably grateful for the work on Tales of the City.
