Produce from Kuntry Gardens of Homer, Michigan was sold by several supermarket chains in the metro Detroit area.
Organic farm busted using human SHITE as fertilizer!
by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 7, 2022 10:44 AM |
I thought for sure that was a joke when I read the name of the farm, but apparently not.

Shitty.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 5, 2022 4:02 PM |
Why is this a problem? It has been done for thousands if not millions of years.

When I a Navy man, our ships would go to South Korea. The command always made a point of telling us not to eat fruits and vegetables unless they were thoroughly washed l mainly because they used human waste as fertilizer. I stuck to Oscars and Pusan’s famous egg sandwiches.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 5, 2022 4:06 PM |
"Kuntry Gardens"? Are they owned by Michfest alums?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 5, 2022 4:06 PM |
R3, it’s perfectly fine, if you cook every vegetable to death before you eat it to kill all the bacteria. It’s why lettuce was always a cooked vegetable until a hundred years ago.
This is the problem with not giving farmer workers bathroom breaks in port-a-potties. They urinate and defecate in the fields and people start getting e. Coli from lettuce.

How come cow manure and chicken shit is ok for fertilizer?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 5, 2022 5:03 PM |
R5 you bought back some memories. I was on the USS BLUE RIDGE (Sodomy Central) and we’d binge on those very things on our pub crawls. What ship were you on?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 5, 2022 5:10 PM |
Human shit should be used as fertilizer. It’s been used for tens of thousands of years. We have really gotten off track with how we handle our food. Everyone needs to learn how to grow food. It should be a worldwide requirement. This complete separation from how food is grown and processed is a huge problem for humans.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 5, 2022 5:15 PM |
R14, it’s because they are vegetarians. You can’t use dog or cat waste in your compost pile because they eat meat. I believe it’s because the bacteria that effect humans need meat to proliferate in the gut.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 5, 2022 5:18 PM |
R16, it can be but it has to be treated to kill the bad bacteria first. I believe this is done with heat.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 5, 2022 5:19 PM |
Sounds disgusting, but we use other kinds of excrement as fertilizer. Human excrement does work as a fertilizer and takes care of 2 problems at one time (need for fertilizer & sewage).
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 5, 2022 5:23 PM |
It's not just due to bacteria but due to nitrogen levels as well. Many forms of manure, including most large mammals', have high concentrations of nitrogen which will, when used directly without composting, generate enough heat in the decomposition process that it will kill plant roots, which can stunt growth, kill nutrients and will create overall extremely subpar crop results. Human manure is perfectly safe to use as a fertilizer but it must be composted for months, if not years, and must be composted with neutralizing carbon-rich materials such as straw or grass clippings. The heat from the decomposition process will kill any dangerous bacteria.
But yes, you should thoroughly wash your vegetables before you eat them.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 5, 2022 5:39 PM |
[quote] including most large mammals',
To be precise, this should have said most large omnivore mammals. Vegetarians like cows have perfect nitrogen ratios and can be used directly into the soil as fertilizers. Omnivores like people, pigs and poultry, not so much.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 5, 2022 5:41 PM |
r20 is correct. Humanure must be composted for years with other clippings/kitchen scraps/etc and then can be used.
Fun fact: if you're an avid gardener and have the privacy to do so, MALE urine is considered a compost accelerant and great for compost piles/fertilizer, etc. Female urine, however, is NOT considered to be good for compost or fertilizer.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 5, 2022 5:44 PM |

What a stupid and offensive name for a business. Altho possibly the owner's last name is Kuntz. I knew a family with this unfortunate name years ago. So in this case not offensive but still stupid.

DL icon Fanny Cradock used to fertilize her to-mah-toes with her own pee, which she called "Madam's Tonic."

r26 - apparently male urine is better for plants/compost because it's less acidic.
Another fun fact: in ages/cultures past, Stale urine, known as wash, was a source of ammonium salts and assisted in cleansing and whitening the cloth. They used to have gatherings in which the women would gather around the cloth and work the urine into the cloth while singing urine washing songs.

I co-sign, R29. Every time I see a Kountry Kitchen along side of a highway I want to burn it down. In addition, places using either “olde” or “ol’” in the name should be boarded up and declared uninhabitable.

This sort of reporting has bothered me for years. Back in the day scientists, physicians, and medical/science reporters: In these types of articles, they NEVER discuss dangers/likelihood of fucking WORM infestation. 30 years ago my best grad school friend (a pharmacy undergrad who later became an MD) told me the incidence of intestinal parasites had been creeping back up after the huge public health initiatives (particular in the South) targeting worms had been eliminated or severely scaled back by the Reagan Administration. And the only people I saw talking about this issue publicly were either trying to sell some putative remedy, or straight crackpots.
When I was a child in the 60-70s, pediatricians routinely tested for parasites, just as veterinarians did, and still do. And with "urban wildlife" becoming a thing since the mid-90s, the problem has only increased--raccoon roundworm, in particular, is horrific and VERY dangerous to humans and pets.
Which was one of the reasons the US *used to* restrict importation and/or transport of produce and meats from certain countries, especially those in Asia where "night soil" was traditionally used.

R5 US soldiers in the Korean War complained frequently about the smell of fields in South Korea fertilized with human waste. North Korea by contrast used chemical fertilizers, which contributed to its famine in the 90s as the end of cheap Soviet energy led to the shutdown of chemical plants. Fun facts.

Interesting video about a couple that bought an old, rundown apartment building in Portland and turned the grounds into a self-sustainable Agrotopia.
[quote] The community is well-prepared for systems collapse; they have extensive rainwater collection and storage, plenty of produce and they process their own sewage. Their permitted sanitation project complies with international building codes for compost toilet and urine diversion systems and turns their pee and poop into nitrogen and compost.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 6, 2022 6:53 PM |
P.S. Regardless of how one feels about composting their own waste...I think we can all agree that it's completely fucking INSANE that we use *potable* water to flush our toilets! Developers need to start building homes with "graywater" systems (water from shower, washing machine, etc.) to flush the toilets.
