Who will replace Lorne Michaels when he retires?
In the “Fly on the Wall” podcast he says he might retire after SNL’s 50th season (still 3 years away.)
Who should replace him?
You’d need someone who can schmooze the network executives, who’s very organized as a producer, and who knows the architecture of comedy.

Go they make guys like Lorne any more?
I nominate Michael Schur.

Too bad Tina Fey got too big for it. She checks all the boxes, but she's meaner than Lorne and wouldn't take too many chances on marginal young comics.

What is Tina doing now?
Why can’t David Spade and Dana Carvey do it?

lilly singh has the right amount of bitchiness to burn bridges and be hated by all.
Wanda Sykes has built up the credit and is as humourless as the snl is.
Chelsea Handler's reputation is trashed, however they've both sucked a lot of cock to rise to the top and never swallowed.

They will hire a young Harvard grad and Lampoon alum who has been in the film business 10 years or so.

Colin Jost will be the logical successor. Please get rid of Lorne. He's old and tired.

Amy Poehler has the grit. She's also gotten into producing and is big on fostering up-and-coming talent.

This is the first time I can imagine SNL being cancelled. People are going beyond debating whether it’s good or bad and instead talking about how irrelevant it is. Young people don’t really care about it all. It was the quintessential Baby Boomer show, and I can see it going away with Lorne.

Before the rehab mess, John Mulaney would have been a good choice.

Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler should do it. Seth has the hyper organized thing, Amy is personable.

I think Seth is hysterical, R17. Not in a stand-up, punchline sort of way.
Instead, he's very clever, fast off the cuff and can tease a person while also showing respect.

SNL is over. 50 years is an extraordinary, historic long run. Whoever takes it over would be bound to re-invent it and will be damned for doing just that or doing nothing. A no-win no matter what happens. Wrap it up. Go out big on 50 years.

Agree with R20.
All TV institutions at some point have to ride off in the sunset. Gunsmoke, Ed Sullivan, Carson. SNL is no different. The only thing that's been keep this show alive for the last decade and a half are its political sketches, and most of the regular cast members aren't even in them. The time to pack it in is long overdue.
They should get some young, fresh blood in there and do something completely different.

Wrap it up at 50. It's a nice place to end it and it gives everyone on the sinking ship a dignified out.

Leslie Jones constantly botched her lines in sketches. No way would she be able to run a show. Something about her screams mental illness to me.

R40 Jones hasn't completely disappeared. She still occasionally get roles in movies and tv shows. Jones also has podcast on Earwolf called The Fckry. Other Earwolf podcasts have been promoting it. The promos state she and Lenny Marcus give advice to people. I haven't listened to it, but I'm sure she's annoying as fuck on it. I'm surprised she got involved with Earwolf given some of the drama that has gone down in the past few years at Earwolf with some of the podcast creators. I also wouldn't be surprised if Jones is lifting/ripping comedy material from other podcasters with similar audiences like Nicole Byer and Naomi Ekperigin.

SNL always kind of bored me because they were so politically based. It's for the people who watch C SPAN everyday. Mad tv was trashy but they were better at creating original characters and making fun of scenarios that happen in real life.

Does it make money or not? That's the deciding factor. It must still make money or they would have cancelled it already. They aren't sentimental. They aren't producing Bros once a week. There is no mission here.

Aside from the very rare YouTube clip, I haven't watched it for 30+ years. And it's even rater that a friend will make a reference to it - maybe once a year?
I watched it often for a decade and, then sporadically, then not at all. Far better things can be found among the stand up comedy on TV or radio that have proliferated; SNL seems some quaint amateur hour kept around for (somebody else's) sentimental reasons. There's no water cooler. There's no collective experience. It's been dead foe along time.

It's going to be Seth Myers. The Late Night gig is just a placeholder.
Seth was respected and a natural leader as head-writer. Lorne liked him, the cast liked him, the suits liked him.
