We Did it Joe! Bisexual Steve Lacy gets first Number One with “Bad Habit”

The first American openly bisexual male with a number one hit.

Oct. 3, 2022 Steve Lacy, a 24-year-old guitarist and producer, started the year with a reputation as a gifted innovator on the fringes of alternative R&B, best known for a D.I.Y. approach in the studio. Now he has the No. 1 song in the country.

“Bad Habit,” a spacey, pensive ballad driven by a slightly warped guitar, has been a monster streaming hit since its release three months ago. After gaining traction on pop radio it finally climbs to the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart this week, with 20 million streams and 40 million “airplay audience impressions,” a measurement of a song’s popularity on radio stations, according to the tracking service Luminate.

The song, from Lacy’s second studio album, “Gemini Rights,” replaces Harry Styles’s “As It Was” at the top of the chart, after an on-and-off reign of 15 weeks since April.

The ascent of “Bad Habit” has been one of the more surprising stories in the music business this year, but for those watching Lacy’s career it has not come out of nowhere. After emerging as a teenage member of the Internet, an offshoot from Odd Future — the boundary-pushing hip-hop ensemble that gave us Frank Ocean, Syd, Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, the Creator — Lacy collaborated with Kendrick Lamar, Solange, Vampire Weekend and others, developing a track record as an artist who could comfortably bridge R&B, hip-hop and alternative rock.

We didn’t, Joe! Some site for bisexuals can rejoice.

by Anonymousreply 2October 5, 2022 12:02 PM

Awesome

by Anonymousreply 3October 5, 2022 12:31 PM

You’re attributing this to President Joe Biden? Who do we have to blame for Lizzo then?

by Anonymousreply 4October 5, 2022 12:36 PM

I really love all the bisexuals seeming to come out of the woodwork, no sane woman would date or have sex with a supposedly bi guy. Black women seem to fall for it all the time.

by Anonymousreply 5October 5, 2022 1:25 PM

Bi dudes are hot

by Anonymousreply 6October 5, 2022 1:30 PM

I believe Elton John was the first openly “bisexual” guy to have a #1 hit. He had #1 hits in the late ‘70s after coming out.

by Anonymousreply 7October 5, 2022 2:05 PM

Elton isnt American

by Anonymousreply 8October 5, 2022 2:17 PM

Frank Ocean? What about him?

by Anonymousreply 9October 5, 2022 2:18 PM

Frank has never had a number one song

by Anonymousreply 10October 5, 2022 2:25 PM

Frank has only gotten up to #25, for ‘Slide.’

by Anonymousreply 11October 5, 2022 2:26 PM

R5 That's right. A girlfriend opened Tinder profile and she asks the guys she chats with, seemingly casual, if they are hetero or bi. She said one guy was bi and there is no way she would meet him up.

by Anonymousreply 12October 5, 2022 2:35 PM

R12, your “girlfriend” isn't all women ya know

by Anonymousreply 13October 5, 2022 2:37 PM

Steve Lacy's “Bad Habit” is now #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, Hot Rock Songs and Hot Alternative Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot R&B Songs. It's the first song in history to rule all 6 charts.

by Anonymousreply 14October 6, 2022 12:23 AM

What am I, chopped liver?

by Anonymousreply 15October 6, 2022 12:26 AM

What about Green Day? Billie Joe has been openly bisexual for decades.

by Anonymousreply 16October 6, 2022 12:29 AM

Darryl Hall definitely doesn’t identify as bi, and few think of him as such.

by Anonymousreply 17October 6, 2022 12:44 AM

Billie Joe Armstrong charted as part of a band. Obviously, many openly gay and bi people have been part of bands that had number one hits. We’re talking about solo artists. Moreover, Green Day has never had a number one hit.

by Anonymousreply 18October 6, 2022 12:47 AM

Daryl Hall came out as bisexual in the 80s, but as far as I know has not mentioned it since.

by Anonymousreply 19October 6, 2022 12:52 AM

Source?

by Anonymousreply 20October 6, 2022 1:20 AM

I looked it up and it looks like Daryl Hall basically came out as a former bisexual in Rolling Stone Magazine. Here is a quote: In a 1984 Rolling Stone magazine interview, Hall denied persistent rumors that he was gay and that he was singing partner John Oats were lovers. "The idea of sex a man does'nt turn me off," he said, "but I don't express it. I satisfied my curiosity about that years ago. I had lots of sex between the ages of three or four and the time I was fourteen or fifteen. Strange experiences with older boys. But men don't particularly turn me on. And, no, John and I have never been lovers. He's not my type. Too short and dark."

by Anonymousreply 21October 6, 2022 1:56 AM

A “former bisexual?” Saying one experimented with the same sex while an adolescent or underage is not viewed as saying one is bisexual, or gay. As a celebrity, he was not perceived by the world as bisexual. Few even know about or recall that interview. Most importantly, Daryl doesn’t publicly identify as bisexual and never publicly used the term for identifying himself

by Anonymousreply 22October 6, 2022 11:37 AM

[quote]He's not my type. Too short and dark."

He would be cancelled for this these days.

by Anonymousreply 23October 6, 2022 12:24 PM

[quote]your “girlfriend” isn't all women ya know

I know she isn't. There might be women into bisexuals. But, not the ones I know. Besides practical reasons like not wanting to avoid monkeypox, she said that she gets turned on when a guy states to be hetero and turned off when he is bi.

by Anonymousreply 24October 7, 2022 10:22 AM

I believe that women, even subconsciously, don't believe that a bi guy is really into them. They like a guy that they can really turn on, that is crazy about pussy and I don't blame them for that. With all the attractive straight men around why would a woman want a confused bisexual. I know if I were a girl I would go for the pure straights.

by Anonymousreply 25October 7, 2022 10:29 AM

I actually love that song "Bad Habit." I hear it and it's with me all day, in a non-annoying way. Yay for him.

STEVE LACY & HIS HERO LENNY KRAVITZ SAY THEIR BAND WOULD ‘SOUND LIKE SEX’: A CONVERSATION The breakout streaming success of "Bad Habit" has made the 24-year-old polymath a Grammy contender. But his timeless cool resists classification — as he discusses with kindred spirit Kravitz.

By Meaghan Garvey 10/7/2022 Share this article on Facebook Share this article on Twitter Share this article on Tumblr Share this article on Pinit + additional share options added There’s cool, and then there’s unmistakable, timeless cool, the type that can’t be taught but can be felt. Steve Lacy is the second kind; one could wake up from a decadeslong cryogenic slumber, look at the guy and say with confidence, “That’s a cool motherf-cker.” It might be the Batman-esque signature shades or the earnest, occasionally diamond-studded smile or the fact that he’s handy with a Stratocaster, to put it mildly.

RELATED Steve Lacy Steve Lacy: Photos From the Billboard Cover Shoot 10/07/2022 That “Bad Habit” — the half-shy, half-steamy single from the 24-year-old’s second album, Gemini Rights — became the breakout anthem of late summer 2022 seems almost incidental to Lacy’s low-key charm. In its 13th week on the Billboard Hot 100 — four of which it spent at No. 2 — it dethrones Harry Styles’ juggernaut, “As It Was,” to reach the top spot on the chart dated Oct. 8. And in September, “Bad Habit” reached another striking milestone: It became the first song ever to simultaneously top Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, Hot R&B Songs, Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, Hot Rock Songs and Hot Alternative Songs charts. Lacy is generally unswayed by things like chart metrics and TikTok trends, but the statistic does neatly embody his unorthodox approach to stardom: analytics for an artist who isn’t concerned with analytics.

“ First, the bio: Steve Lacy is a 24-year-old, half-Black, half-Filipino, bisexual, singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer born and raised in Compton, Los Angeles. While in high school, he joined the Odd Future-affiliated band The Internet and executive produced their Grammy-nominated 2015 album, Ego Death. Though it didn’t win an award, Lacy attended the show and casually went to school the next day. The 17-year-old was still anonymous to many of his classmates. “I would play gigs and then just go back to school,” he recalled in an interview.”

A friend was dating a guy who later admitted he was bisexual or had been involved with a guy previously. , She broke it off right after. He said he regretted telling her. I think he did the right thing, but felt bad for him. There are some women who are open minded, probably more SJW/woke types.

I googled this guy and he has made some controversial statements himself. Said he would never date a black guy. Seems par for the course with famous black gay/bisexual males.

by Anonymousreply 32October 8, 2022 2:28 AM

The song sounds like an 80s R/B album cut, but it’s miles ahead of some of the other junk being churned out

by Anonymousreply 33October 8, 2022 2:34 AM

He was cute then he very obviously got into drugs, got tatted and dreads.

by Anonymousreply 34October 8, 2022 2:37 AM

Wow, so many non first firsts this week.

[quote] But Lacy rejected the notion he was prejudiced: “The reason for it all isn’t anti-black at all," he replied. "Growing up around black males, they were always my competitors ya know? I never viewed or saw myself doing anything sexual with my neighbors. I literally, like I said, see them as brothers."

Interesting. Snow queens having been offering this justification since before Lacy was born. I don't understand how you can grow up around Black males, be gay and not have that shape your sexual attraction. I don't buy the whole "it would feel like incest" thing. I do, however, acknowledge that the homophobia in the Black community can make one repress their sexual desire.

Lacy’s first Hot 100 No. 1, from his album Gemini Rights, which debuted as his first Billboard 200 top 10, at its No. 7 high, in July, concurrently tops the multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, Hot Rock Songs and Hot Alternative Songs charts for an eighth week each and the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot R&B Songs charts for a seventh frame each. It became the first song to rule all five rankings (dating to October 2012, when Billboard‘s main genre-based song charts adopted the Hot 100’s methodology).

Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ “Unholy” repeats at its No. 2 Hot 100 high, with 23.2 million streams (down 2%), 15.2 million in airplay audience (up 55%) and 12,000 sold (up 10%). It leads both Streaming Songs and Digital Song Sales for a third week and is the first hit to top both charts in its first three weeks on each list since Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” doubled up in its first three weeks on each survey (Jan. 23, 30 and Feb. 6, 2021; it went on to spend its first four frames atop Streaming Songs).
