I feel bad that I'd never heard of Raffaella Carrà until after her passing. The style, the sexiness, the stage presence. Apparently a huge star in her native Italy and well regarded across much of Europe and Latin America.
This song is killer, too.

Didn't you watch Doctor Who ? That's how i discovered her.

She had a television show in Spain. Her Spanish was excellent.
She made me a gayling

I have posted about her several times on DL. Her backup dancers are often a hoot. Her song "a far l´amore comincia tu". was quite controversial at the time because it advocated women taking the initiative to make love. It was remade by Tony Holiday into ,,Tanze Samba mit Mir".

Here she is on Letterman. Of course Dave's being a jerk:

Not much of a singer, apparently

This is the gayest thing we'd ever seen on national Spanish TV at the time.
The song is about a gay guy.
During the latter part of the song a very gay guy joins her and he tells gay jokes.
We couldn't believe what we were seeing. Raffa was courageous.

Sequin Varieties TV in Europe. It's upbeat, colorful, undemanding, entertaining, cheesy, fab, tacky. Some good and some bad performances. Every country has it. There's always a way into it, to like it, on some level, and appreciate that it's there. It's comforting. But after an hour or so I get a headache and need to change the channel to another genre of TV.

She sang some lovely ballads as well. She didn't have a great voice nor was she a great dancer, but she had IT. She was a great entertainer and she made people smile. Everybody loved her.

Disney Plus is making a documentary series on her. Check it out!

I first knew about her when she appeared in Von Ryan's Express . God she was so hot back then. Her fake blonde hair was a disaster she looked so good with her natural hair.
Bob Sinclair remixed Far L'amore and it appeared quite iconically in The Great Beauty.

From one of the greatest introductions to a lead character in a film. Featuring the Bob Sinclair remix.

[Quote]Nevertheless, Raffaella is a mystery to which no one has the key. Reserved by nature and very jealous of her privacy, Raffaella is a woman who has struggled to establish herself in a world of men
^^ From Disney.
This is going to be another straight-washed fictional piece for the masses. Raffaella liked the ladies and her male companion of many years is still a big queen. He was a fixture in Madrid's gay bars during the run of Raffaella's Spanish variety show.
Raffa was also a black belt communist from Bologna which was not particularly controversial. Italian communists of her period were more modern day socialists.
But yes, as the blurb states she was mysterious and very private for good reasons and it's unlikely the docuseries is going to tell us the real reasons why.

As a 7 year old kid, I remember seeing this on some Italian variety TV show my parents watched (I grew up in Europe). I was absolutely spellbound and I guess that was my official coming out to my parents.

Why did she posed nude in the 1970s? A big tax bill to clear?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 12, 2022 1:34 AM |
*pose

R24, her male companion? You mean her husband?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 12, 2022 11:09 AM |
No husband.

So many gaylings in Italy and Spain were given the courage to eventually come out thanks to her. Including Tiziano Ferro, who then put together this great tribute to Raffaella Carrà in 2006. Still a barnstormer.

Thanks for starting this thread OP.
I've never heard of her but she is a great performer & the cameras sure did love her.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 12, 2022 1:02 PM |
She was very popular in Latin America in the 80s, typical party music. And the back up dancers were unapologetically gayer than Christmas. That and the bold lyrics for the time made her "scandalous" for the older people, but not enough to get away with censure her.

^^ the dark hairy dancer on the left of that gif was Raffaella's long term " boyfriend.". Jaja
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 13, 2022 12:14 AM |
Why did male back up dancers in those days all look at least 45?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 13, 2022 1:28 PM |
I watched the Maria Felix docuseries (it's in Spanish on Amazon) and the court case she brought against her female lover in Paris wasn't even mentioned. Damn I was looking forward to that wild chapter in her life but NADA.
The same will be done with Raffaella. 2022 and nobody has the cajones to tell a real story.

Raffa, three part documentary on La Carrà, now on Tubi!

Fucking adore her. She's the only dancer I've seen do a better neck dip than Donna McKechnie.

A song with a work-out routine included....what's not to love!!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | February 13, 2024 9:44 PM |
There was a period where she did a call-in show on daytime TV that was really moving. She loved the public and they loved her back, and I could see how a generation of little Italian gaylings would be enrapt with her.
Interesting that she signed a deal with Berlusconi, which the doc also Cover, if she was that far to the left.
