Meh.

I can't believe this song didn't give Summer her first #1 hit back in 1977. This song is a masterpiece, but peaked at #6.

by Anonymousreply 2October 5, 2022 2:21 AM

A perfect song.

by Anonymousreply 3October 5, 2022 2:21 AM

Horny songs.

by Anonymousreply 4October 5, 2022 2:22 AM

My all time favorite.

Back in the day at End Up and I BEAM in San Francisco as a bartender, when we needed glasses, DJ would play this and dance floor was packed and we could all gather glasses, empty beer bottles.

There were only a few other dance songs that would do this. Memories. Yep, I’m OLD!

R1, I think you had to be there, 1977, gays now could be out and proud in big cities, no apologies, no hiding, not giving a shit. The excitement of gay clubs with hundreds of sweaty bodies, dancing, MDA, grinding, bathhouse after the bars closed. A real community where we were no longer afraid.

I know these are all grandpa memories but it was a time of newfound freedom and acceptance and it was intoxicating. Donna, Sylvester, Gloria Gaynor was an integral part of it. And I know it is hard for the youngins to understand it all but for me, pre AIDS, it was the freedom of getting out of jail.

Madonna always samples this in her live shows. It’s that good.

by Anonymousreply 7October 5, 2022 2:56 AM

Outstanding song. Still sounds like it's from the future.

I love how the 12” version has the extra section that has three different octaves instead of two.

by Anonymousreply 9October 5, 2022 3:03 AM

My least fave DS song.

Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, the day Summer died:

"In a message posted on Facebook, Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran praised her legacy and in particular the influence of one track. "For me, there is no doubt that her song I Feel Love had a dramatic effect on modern music. It was certainly a key influence on my work with Duran Duran." Along with producer Giorgio Moroder, she pioneered the use of electronic sequencers in dance music, Rhodes said. "Today that sound seems so familiar, but in 1977 it was a brave new frontier. It's extremely rare that you hear one song that completely changes the way you perceive music. I Feel Love achieved that."

I think the reason this wasn't a number one hit r2 ( #6 is pretty damn good) is because it was both ahead of its time soundwise and also because it doesn't follow more traditional verse-chorus pop style familiar to the masses and most prevelant on radio at the time and present in her later #1 hits (“MacArthur Park,” “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls” and “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)”. This nontraditional structure more suited to the dancefloor and 12' versions is seen in many of Summer's earlier gems such as Try Me I Know We Can Make It and Spring Affair. Love To Love You Baby was also nontraditional and also missed #1 (it hit #2, perhaps buoyed a bit more than I feel Love by the novelty and shock value of its frank sexual nature.)

David Bowie on "I Feel Love"

[quote] In the liner notes to his 'Sound And Vision' retrospective collection, Bowie explains, “One day in Berlin, Eno came running in and said, ‘I have heard the sound of the future’ … he puts on ‘I Feel Love’ by Donna Summer … He said, ‘This is it, look no further. This single is going to change the sound of club music for the next fifteen years.”

The beginning ALWAYS elevates my mood and conjures up flashes of memories.

by Anonymousreply 15October 5, 2022 5:49 AM

It has never lost its power.

I wish I had been old enough to hear it for the first time in 1977. It still sounds so fresh and groundbreaking all these years later.

I love the album it comes from, I Remember Yesterday, where Donna and Giorgio explored the changing sounds throughout the decades.

Donna was great at doing concept albums. Her other album from 1977, Once Upon a Time, is fantastic.

Donna re-recorded the vocals in 1995 for the Rollo and Sister Bliss Remix. This was the mix/version that was on the Pure Disco compilations in the late 90s.

If it came on the radio when we were driving, my father turned it off or changed the station. "Not for kids."

I currently have it on my workout mix. Love this version with her additional vocals. She belts it out on this one.

Oops, wrong version.

I have the Masters At Work Remix, with the extra vocals on my workout mix.

There is a documentary with Nile Rodgers explaining the (novel) use of auto tune and this song. I will try to post it

by Anonymousreply 21October 5, 2022 7:40 PM

That interesting since autotune was launched 2 decades after this song 1997.

by Anonymousreply 22October 5, 2022 11:49 PM

Donna Summer did not need or ever use auto tune. She was the real deal.

Nice try, R21.

by Anonymousreply 23October 6, 2022 1:16 AM

R6 And that euphoria and sense of community is gone now. Long gone.

And it's impossible for the youngins of today to understand what it was like.

by Anonymousreply 24October 6, 2022 1:27 AM

Loved how ii was used in Beyond The Candelabra to establish when and where the scene was as well as manifest the culture of the time.
