My mom would wear the gaucho pants with suede boots.

She looked tres chic.

A seamstress would make them for her, too.

No off the rack stuff 😬

by Anonymousreply 1October 3, 2022 8:00 PM

OMG hell no. Lol.

by Anonymousreply 2October 3, 2022 8:01 PM

Because every woman wants to look short and fat... Gaucho Pants!

by Anonymousreply 3October 3, 2022 8:53 PM

When they were trendy around 2006-2008 I got sick to death of seeing them. I'm glad that trend finally died. Again.

by Anonymousreply 4October 3, 2022 9:45 PM

thanks for the link! i love looking at real pics from decades past.

by Anonymousreply 5October 3, 2022 9:54 PM

OP, please explain the difference between, gauchos and culottes.

Throw in skorts, ,too.

by Anonymousreply 8October 3, 2022 10:26 PM

Thanks, but I'll stick with hostess pants. If they're good enough for Harper's Bazaar, they're good enough for the EtheLu Dress Shoppe.

And Capris, and jorts.

by Anonymousreply 10October 3, 2022 10:28 PM

I prefer Groucho’s pants.

by Anonymousreply 11October 3, 2022 10:31 PM

Capris and flats are absolutely de rigueur, r10...

Culottes and Gauchos are both cropped pants that fall at or below the knee. Culottes tend to be more full, and resemble a skirt when the legs are together. Gauchos are less full, and are closer to a long short, or a short capri.

Originally skorts were shorts with a flap of fabric across the front, so they look like a skirt from the front, and shorts from the back. Those are still made, as are skorts that are essentially shorts and a skirt sewn together - think of the mesh underwear in men's bathing suits, but not mesh in a skort.

This lets women wear a skirt, while also playing tennis, or hanging upside down from a jungle gym without flashing their panties.

Why was plaid so popular in the 70s? I remember plaid everything.

by Anonymousreply 15October 3, 2022 10:41 PM

I like apartment pants

by Anonymousreply 16October 3, 2022 10:41 PM

I like Thanksgiving pants.

by Anonymousreply 17October 3, 2022 10:45 PM

Still stickin' with my palazzos...

I remember a friend’s older sister had palazzos, and I thought they were the most glamorous thing.

by Anonymousreply 19October 4, 2022 12:54 AM

Nope, R3, my mom was pretty tall and she looked fabulous in them.

by Anonymousreply 20October 4, 2022 2:55 AM

When Luanne sees her old trailer for the first time since that bad fight between her parents: "So many bad memories. There's the fork Mama stabbed Daddy with. The empty bottles from that awful night. And, oh no! Those mango-colored palazzo pants that made my butt look big."

by Anonymousreply 24October 5, 2022 12:32 AM

I'll stick with my clam diggers, thank you very much.

by Anonymousreply 25October 5, 2022 1:13 AM

Pedal pushers, clam diggers, capri pants what’s the frigging difference??

by Anonymousreply 26October 5, 2022 1:52 AM

R26. It's all about the length. Capris are ankle length. Pedal pushers are calf length. Clam diggers are knee length.

by Anonymousreply 27October 5, 2022 2:20 AM

Very popular in Argentina....lol

Did she let you try them on, or did you have to sneak around and do it while she was out?

I love gauchos. Just bought some in plaid while traveling in Italy. The key is that they must be fitted in the waist and hips, and you have to wear them with some sort of heel. They're fun and flattering.

by Anonymousreply 34October 21, 2022 12:39 AM

You're right, r34, gauchos and ladies' Keds just don't cut it.

by Anonymousreply 35October 21, 2022 12:48 AM

Groucho pants!

I see you in

Gaucho pants

by Anonymousreply 38October 21, 2022 1:37 AM

Culottes are skorts. In the 70s they weren't called skorts though.

by Anonymousreply 39October 21, 2022 1:39 AM

Grandpa started the trend.

by Anonymousreply 40October 21, 2022 1:42 AM

They were actually a 90s thing you wouldn’t get…. They came from grunge.

by Anonymousreply 41October 21, 2022 1:42 AM

Gaucho? More like fraucho.

by Anonymousreply 42October 21, 2022 9:39 PM

It always struck me that culottes are such a better alternative to a skirt for women as they are so much easier to wear.

Dividing the skirt seems like such a no brainer. I don't know why women haven't demanded divided skirt alternatives.

by Anonymousreply 43October 21, 2022 9:43 PM

R31 GAUCHO PIZAZZ includes gauchos, turban, boots, fake-fur coat, blouse

by Anonymousreply 44October 21, 2022 10:21 PM

I want a gaucho who's not wearing pants.

by Anonymousreply 45October 21, 2022 10:39 PM

r9 I'd kill to find a pair of guy's shorts in that material. 🤣

by Anonymousreply 46October 22, 2022 5:56 AM

You can knit yourself a pair.

by Anonymousreply 47October 22, 2022 12:49 PM

r43 Nah, culottes look dorky. If she's gonna wear shorts wear tight shorts. If she's gonna wear a dress wear a real dress.

by Anonymousreply 48October 22, 2022 6:01 PM

I'll stay with my very oversized sweat pants that i never seem to sweat in them

by Anonymousreply 49October 22, 2022 6:58 PM

Since the last couple of years fashion has been dominated by flood-length "ankle pants" that look like crap on everyone...

Anything for a change at this point.

[quote]R32 As a young mother my sister wore only gaucho pants and a breast feeding cape.

A time honored ensemble at MichFest.

by Anonymousreply 51October 27, 2022 8:53 PM

At MichFest a breast-CASTING cape would be more appropriate.

by Anonymousreply 52October 27, 2022 10:09 PM

I like the look with tall boots. The plaids are hard to look at.

by Anonymousreply 53October 27, 2022 10:14 PM

I swear that once when I was watching EYES OF LAURA MARS (maybe the 80th time) it struck me that the ā€œskirtā€ Dunaway is wearing in this scene is actually some kind of gaucho thing, with the addition of slits.

I caught it when Our Faye was getting up from or going into her photo shoot crouch. Or maybe I didn’t.

Muriel, please rewatch and confirm this.

Banana Republic TRIED selling "Athetic Shorts" that are tight at the waist and flair out in the leg. kind of "Varsity Drag" from the '20, but updated last season. Like Gaucho's for men. The Rockefeller Center Store has had them on their sales rack for over 6 months. They have since been discontinued and priced at $11 (down from $90!).
