How did you find Datalounge?

I was googling for male celebrity nudes or whether one was gay 15 years ago and never left. I feel like it was Jake Gyllenhaal. What about you?

by Anonymousreply 130October 21, 2022 9:41 AM

I was looking for a white belt for a man.

by Anonymousreply 1October 2, 2022 3:22 PM

Don't remember

by Anonymousreply 2October 2, 2022 3:24 PM

from either a gay bbs (delos? beeline? or maybe the annex - it was less gay, adult, attracted a lot of industry.. so, that was just a drink or a gig away fromg ay) in the greater Los Angeles area...

by Anonymousreply 3October 2, 2022 3:27 PM

A friend told me about it back in the 90s. Forgot about it until I remembered and did a search.

by Anonymousreply 4October 2, 2022 3:28 PM

Datalounge found me.

by Anonymousreply 5October 2, 2022 3:30 PM

I was googling some 80s public access tv shows such as “Mrs. Mouth”, then returned by accident while looking for info about the legendary Sondra Prill. Stayed for good

by Anonymousreply 6October 2, 2022 3:32 PM

This evil witch wasn't invited to my christening, so she cursed me and I ended up here.

by Anonymousreply 7October 2, 2022 3:36 PM

Looking for info on Lucy and Desi's relationship

by Anonymousreply 8October 2, 2022 3:36 PM

Someone mentioned it on an early iteration of Manvox in the late 90s. I've been here since.

by Anonymousreply 9October 2, 2022 3:37 PM

I got drunk one night and the next morning DataLounge was there in bed with me smoking a cigarette. That's all I remember

by Anonymousreply 10October 2, 2022 3:38 PM

I was typing in that gonorrhea rumor of that one marvel star and a thread from here was suggested by my search engine.

by Anonymousreply 11October 2, 2022 3:39 PM

I forget what or who I was googling about 17 yrs ago, and it brought me here. I love this site. However, I've only started commenting in the last year. I do really enjoy reading the different threads, and its helped me a lot too.

by Anonymousreply 12October 2, 2022 3:39 PM

I’m not sure, but what I do know is that a Datalounge thread appears in about 25% of the results for my Google searches.

I have some esoteric tastes that seem to match well here.

by Anonymousreply 13October 2, 2022 3:42 PM

I was looking for a speeder that I really liked with an open cockpit and the right speed capabilities. Googling for that led me here.

by Anonymousreply 14October 2, 2022 3:43 PM

A work colleague recommended it in probably early 2005. He particularly cited the witticisms on the Scott Peterson case.

I work in academia.

by Anonymousreply 15October 2, 2022 3:48 PM

I defintely was googling some actor to see if he was gay. This is about 2013. The thread I discovered was hilarious. Somehow two queens started bickering over Britney Spears in the thread of this C-list actor whom I can't remember.

by Anonymousreply 16October 2, 2022 3:51 PM

I swear about 10 years ago I googled “Whitney Houston Hot Mess” and up came data lounge. It was love at first sight.

by Anonymousreply 17October 2, 2022 4:03 PM

Late, late ‘90s or very early aughts. Probably chasing down gossip about the gayness of some actor or other.

by Anonymousreply 18October 2, 2022 4:09 PM

"Rate-a-Rod" website around 2000.

One of the rod owners said this was a favored site. Been here since.

by Anonymousreply 19October 2, 2022 4:15 PM

Rod owners?

by Anonymousreply 20October 2, 2022 4:17 PM

And what kept is that my intellectual gays made some very insightful commentary about politics and world affairs. Things would often get heated but nowhere near as polarized as they are now. And now even many of the liberals have gotten quasi racist but they're only reacting to the obnoxiousness of black Twitter. God, I miss the pre-Trump days.

by Anonymousreply 21October 2, 2022 4:18 PM

I think I made a few visits before I figured what this place was exactly.

by Anonymousreply 22October 2, 2022 4:20 PM

Tommy Kirk's death brought some very vague statements (not necessarily prurient material) about him online and in the papers, material which I was curious to get some clarity on. I had a vague notion of DL's habitués' knowledge and experience with Hollywood figures, and thought there might be someone here who had been a friend or colleague of his, someone with a well-grounded anecdote, who could provide some detail large or small. Still waiting for [italic] that [/italic] to pan out; but the wisdom, wit, insight, and (sometimes) kindness here are addicting.

by Anonymousreply 23October 2, 2022 4:20 PM

April 2011, googling if Tom Cruise was mentally ill. Arrived here, took a look around and then never left.

by Anonymousreply 24October 2, 2022 4:21 PM

I got kicked off Twitter, DataLounge took me in 😢

by Anonymousreply 25October 2, 2022 4:24 PM

Why did you get kicked off Twitter, R25?

by Anonymousreply 26October 2, 2022 4:26 PM

^ I told a MAGAt to "blow it out his butt"... Twitter said I was advocating violence, blah, blah... Derp 😠

by Anonymousreply 27October 2, 2022 4:33 PM

I'm ashamed to admit i used to be a CDAN devotee. Somehow or another, someone must have linked to here in a comment and when i followed the link, took a look around and decided I liked the cut of DL's jib. Been here for 10 years now.

by Anonymousreply 28October 2, 2022 4:35 PM

I took a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

by Anonymousreply 29October 2, 2022 4:40 PM

I found it as a teenager (20+ years ago) while researching something obscure and since-forgotten relating to old gay Hollywood. Came for the information and stayed for the humor. Back then there were few websites that neatly (and cuntily) curated so many of my interests.

by Anonymousreply 30October 2, 2022 4:41 PM

I was searching (shall we say, “versatile”) caftan patterns.

I was an aficionado of The Wonkette (not for years now, though) and she mentioned DL in her column. It was 2004. Stopped by for the wit, even now while it's sh -- oh, never mind.

But truth be told, it really was much better then.

by Anonymousreply 33October 2, 2022 5:09 PM

I just worked a night shift in the village and got drunk after. I lost my shoe and only subway token back home. So, I walked all the way from East Village to 49th and 9th, a fuckin' long walk with a headache and one shoe. I finally got to the traffic light at 49th and this black, drag hooker was standing next to me looking me up and down. She says to me, "You better move your white ass, bitch! This here's my corner!"

I crossed the street feeling rejected by a drag hooker when the phone rang in the the booth. I figured 'what the heck... what could be worse than tonight?' I answered the phone and the voice said, "For a Good Time, go to Datalounge.Com! You won't regret it!!!"

by Anonymousreply 34October 2, 2022 5:21 PM

^^r34 I thought you were going to tell us you ran into J. Peterman while wandering about in a drunken haze and he took you home and introduced you to the earthly delight that is DL!

by Anonymousreply 35October 2, 2022 5:28 PM

I noticed that an increasing number of my Google searches led back to Datalounge, so I decided to hang out and explore. I was hooked.

by Anonymousreply 36October 2, 2022 5:31 PM

I had just read a story somewhere in which Jake Gyllenhaal stated that he was never going to show his dick in a movie. It was early in 2013, and I googled "Jake Gyllenhaal penis" or "Jake Gyllenhaal cock."

I didn't find any dick pics, at least not any real ones, but I did find other gay men with the same interest here at DL, and I decided to stay.

by Anonymousreply 37October 2, 2022 5:39 PM

2007 - I wanted to read about bisexual film star Alan Bates - I was reading a rather depressing biography about him that had just been published I think the gurls were talking about it (hardly surprising) - and a number of obscure things that seemed to interest me - ALSO. v. fun fact -the Diana Scream video had just been posted for the very first time - so it was an historic day for two reasons.

There was a fantastic archive in those days - you could look up anything all the way back to the beginning.

It was the first GAY place on the internet I found that didn't focus in the heavy side of gay, on AIDS and recent gay-bashings and the rest - people wanted to make each other laugh more than anything. Anyway, I fitted right in and never left.

It was very different in those days. They were always saying "You'll get flamed for this!" and the big shame was to be a "newbie!" - new people were TOTALLY ignored especially if they revealed themselves or if they asked what some odd word or expression meant. The gurls were OBSESSED with spelling and grammar. OBSESSED. If you blundered you might get 13 or 14 posts tearing your post apart. And obsessed with ESTs - and would determine at GREAT length over dozens of posts as to whether a post was an EST or not. Everyone was always calling everyone a freeper, that was the other big insult...bit like "troll" now.

Passed out in her own vomit with a bleeding anus in the backroom of the Mineshaft

by Anonymousreply 39October 2, 2022 5:57 PM

Sorry that sounds all rather negative - the positives - much maturer, it was dominated by the eldergays which I loved, I've aways been more interested in older people for company. I think it was much wittier (those eldergays had really known suffering, so the jokes came fast and furious).

Things moved much faster. We had pages and most people just read the top 50 posts on the first page. It was more like a hit parade or a pop chart - that's why people bitching about your spelling if you were an OP helped a lot because they bumped your post onto the first page.

Also anyone could just turn up and post, so you'd get violently homophobic posters turn up in the middle of some thread about soup or something. People would step over them like a dog turd - you'd be berated if you responded to a homophobe, but I often couldn't resist it.

by Anonymousreply 40October 2, 2022 6:00 PM

I think it was in Cmbyn era when I was googling Armie the Cannibal or Timothee or both.

by Anonymousreply 41October 2, 2022 6:53 PM

I've been here off and on since it was the Out.com forum. I moved over to Is He/She Gay? in the late '90s, then came back to DL after the fighting started at ISHG regarding ownership of the board.

by Anonymousreply 42October 2, 2022 6:57 PM

I didn’t, like, scratch my ass and boom DL. Of course not!

by Anonymousreply 43October 2, 2022 6:58 PM

I kept seeing in mentioned on a Daytime Dish spoiler/gossip thread. (2006)

by Anonymousreply 44October 2, 2022 8:04 PM

I was a regular poster at IMDb. Often resorting to internet searches to try to verify various claims, especially regarding whether or not an actor was or wasn't gay, I kept encountering Datalounge in the search results. After a few years, I became curious and browsed a few threads. But the place never really interested me until after the demise of the IMDb message boards.

by Anonymousreply 45October 2, 2022 8:06 PM

I was googling Tony Geary from General Hospital. It was around the time he left GH so six or seven years ago. I think six/seven years makes me a newbie here compared to some of you.

by Anonymousreply 46October 2, 2022 8:08 PM

I was looking up the gay rumours about two young stars from General Hospital - Lucky and Nicholas.

by Anonymousreply 47October 2, 2022 8:12 PM

[quote]How did you find Datalounge?

In a drunken stupor.

by Anonymousreply 48October 2, 2022 8:14 PM

Basically I gave up social media that is designed to divide people. I often find sites that way but this one is the most heartwarming, relatable and humorously interactive. The aspect that I recall is registering, but the original reason is not retrievable via my memory.

by Anonymousreply 49October 2, 2022 8:17 PM

I discovered DL back in 2018 looking for real names of some Corbin Fisher models. Then I fully engaged to the site by 2020 reading threads regarding Aaron Rodgers, lol.

by Anonymousreply 50October 2, 2022 8:20 PM

Googling Vivian Vance.

by Anonymousreply 51October 2, 2022 8:27 PM

Man I'm old. Believe it or not, it was a frau forum on Google groups back in the early 2000s (2002 or 2003). It was a celebrity Gossip Google sub group and a great was a moderator and a celebrity's sexuality was being discussed. I don't remember whom they were discussing, but the moderator was very disappointed, she said something kind of life "sadly, I think he is gay, they're discussing him on Datalounge". I was like what is that? So I googled it and I found on the homepage the 9/11 thread so being discussed and I started the and read every single page on that thread. And I was hooked. This is where I discovered terms like troll, queen, fag, cunt, dyke being used cavalierly and gratuitously but not in a derogatory way. I'm black so the racism did bother me, the "please don't let them be black" and "simian" comments on crime threads upset me a lot but I take it for what it is, a huh of all kinds of LGBTQ folks, even the racist ones.

by Anonymousreply 52October 2, 2022 8:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 53October 2, 2022 8:37 PM

Pre-9/11, I heard somewhere that Wendy Williams was outing celebrities on her radio show and I wanted to read about it, and a search led me here; I haven’t left since.

by Anonymousreply 54October 2, 2022 8:38 PM

Pretty sure I was googling to see if a certain celeb had gay rumors but I can’t for the life of me remember who the celeb was.

by Anonymousreply 55October 2, 2022 8:39 PM

The Datalounge thanks you for your service r54!

by Anonymousreply 56October 2, 2022 8:41 PM

I was here very early on, like 94 or 95. I think I heard about it in an AOL Chat room or an alt-gossip site. The topic was always about gay celebrities and big dicks.

by Anonymousreply 57October 2, 2022 8:41 PM

A friend told me to check it out. I did, I liked it, so I stayed.

by Anonymousreply 58October 2, 2022 8:42 PM

Defamer during the early years of Gawker mentioned Datalounge in connection with something salacious and snarky. Visited. Laughed my ass off frequently even while at my desk during work. Never left.

I used to see references to DL on a voy.com message board known as IHSG? (Is He She Gay?), which back in the day was actually a better board for info on minor celebrities, local news anchors, weatherbois, and daytime soap opera actors, etc.

by Anonymousreply 66October 2, 2022 9:36 PM

A friend told me about it a number of years ago, but I didn't join until April of 2020 after I started working remotely.

by Anonymousreply 67October 2, 2022 9:40 PM

I read something about it... I think it was a reference on Gawker - one or two sentences - the gossiping boys over at Datalounge behaving badly... It was gays, gossip and DL, I recall that much.

by Anonymousreply 68October 2, 2022 9:41 PM

I don’t remember what I was searching but the threads regarding the affair between Arnold Schwarzenegger and his housekeeper were referenced in my Google results. I was intrigued and clicked on the link and found a hilarious thread and never laughed so hard in my life.

by Anonymousreply 69October 2, 2022 9:47 PM

I was looking for information on a General / Secty of Defense James Mattis and DL links popped up.

by Anonymousreply 70October 2, 2022 9:56 PM

There was a long thread about the show I was on at the time. I stuck around.

by Anonymousreply 71October 2, 2022 10:40 PM

I used to read the Usenet group alt.showbiz.gossip a lot back in the late '90s and early '00s. There was a thread discussing rumors about Christina Aguilera hooking up with women and DataLounge was the source of the rumors (this was back in 2002, when this site had gossip like this posted daily). I searched for the site and haven't left since.

The worst one is "dropped" - apparently you don't release a new movie or song, no, you drop it.

by Anonymousreply 78October 3, 2022 6:31 AM

Discovered it when looking at book reviews (of all things). Took me a while to realise it is a gay man's website predominantly (I get there eventually). Enjoy the discussions, snark and warmth so been here ever since!

This was when DL was an all-purpose website with sections on health, politics, etc. From there I stumbled onto its forums. I think there were just 2 but I can't remember anymore.

by Anonymousreply 92October 4, 2022 1:41 AM

During the mid 90s, I wound up on DL by following a link from either the Television without Pity or Fametracker forums.

by Anonymousreply 94October 4, 2022 2:15 AM

Same way as a lot of previous posters. My internet searches kept turning up DL hits. At first, I was repelled and clutching pearls reading the DL threads. DL is hilarious, smart, random (in a good way), & yes, sophisticated. I actually like the care that goes into spelling and grammar. DL is a cut above a lot of sites. I like that it's mostly anonymous. I found that in sites where everybody has a handle / avatar, people actually form cliques. I hate that. There are enough cliques in "real life."

by Anonymousreply 101October 4, 2022 3:24 AM

1999, I was reading a gossip forum and on a thread about Kevin spacey someone linked to DL. Been here ever since.

I was googling if an obscure actor was gay and couldn’t find the goss anywhere else. Google recommended a snarky DL thread. The snark, the humour has kept me addicted to DL.

In 2013, Googling rumors about Henry Cavill being gay 🤣 . I now check several times a day and have gotten strange looks when I bust out laughing in public. I've learned so much.

Came from a soap opera site and never left. Like other posters, became addicted to all the snark and gossip. It's a wonder I'm not dead from a grease fire....lol.

I found it to be a shockingly terse, frank and "totally lacking manners or redeeming quality" website. I am astonished that I hung around here. It is truly a stinking pile of horse-shit, just as it advertises itself.
