I’m not sure, but what I do know is that a Datalounge thread appears in about 25% of the results for my Google searches.

And what kept is that my intellectual gays made some very insightful commentary about politics and world affairs. Things would often get heated but nowhere near as polarized as they are now. And now even many of the liberals have gotten quasi racist but they're only reacting to the obnoxiousness of black Twitter. God, I miss the pre-Trump days.

Tommy Kirk's death brought some very vague statements (not necessarily prurient material) about him online and in the papers, material which I was curious to get some clarity on. I had a vague notion of DL's habitués' knowledge and experience with Hollywood figures, and thought there might be someone here who had been a friend or colleague of his, someone with a well-grounded anecdote, who could provide some detail large or small. Still waiting for [italic] that [/italic] to pan out; but the wisdom, wit, insight, and (sometimes) kindness here are addicting.

I just worked a night shift in the village and got drunk after. I lost my shoe and only subway token back home. So, I walked all the way from East Village to 49th and 9th, a fuckin' long walk with a headache and one shoe. I finally got to the traffic light at 49th and this black, drag hooker was standing next to me looking me up and down. She says to me, "You better move your white ass, bitch! This here's my corner!"
I crossed the street feeling rejected by a drag hooker when the phone rang in the the booth. I figured 'what the heck... what could be worse than tonight?' I answered the phone and the voice said, "For a Good Time, go to Datalounge.Com! You won't regret it!!!"

I had just read a story somewhere in which Jake Gyllenhaal stated that he was never going to show his dick in a movie. It was early in 2013, and I googled "Jake Gyllenhaal penis" or "Jake Gyllenhaal cock."
I didn't find any dick pics, at least not any real ones, but I did find other gay men with the same interest here at DL, and I decided to stay.

2007 - I wanted to read about bisexual film star Alan Bates - I was reading a rather depressing biography about him that had just been published I think the gurls were talking about it (hardly surprising) - and a number of obscure things that seemed to interest me - ALSO. v. fun fact -the Diana Scream video had just been posted for the very first time - so it was an historic day for two reasons.
There was a fantastic archive in those days - you could look up anything all the way back to the beginning.
It was the first GAY place on the internet I found that didn't focus in the heavy side of gay, on AIDS and recent gay-bashings and the rest - people wanted to make each other laugh more than anything. Anyway, I fitted right in and never left.
It was very different in those days. They were always saying "You'll get flamed for this!" and the big shame was to be a "newbie!" - new people were TOTALLY ignored especially if they revealed themselves or if they asked what some odd word or expression meant. The gurls were OBSESSED with spelling and grammar. OBSESSED. If you blundered you might get 13 or 14 posts tearing your post apart. And obsessed with ESTs - and would determine at GREAT length over dozens of posts as to whether a post was an EST or not. Everyone was always calling everyone a freeper, that was the other big insult...bit like "troll" now.

Sorry that sounds all rather negative - the positives - much maturer, it was dominated by the eldergays which I loved, I've aways been more interested in older people for company. I think it was much wittier (those eldergays had really known suffering, so the jokes came fast and furious).
Things moved much faster. We had pages and most people just read the top 50 posts on the first page. It was more like a hit parade or a pop chart - that's why people bitching about your spelling if you were an OP helped a lot because they bumped your post onto the first page.
Also anyone could just turn up and post, so you'd get violently homophobic posters turn up in the middle of some thread about soup or something. People would step over them like a dog turd - you'd be berated if you responded to a homophobe, but I often couldn't resist it.

I was a regular poster at IMDb. Often resorting to internet searches to try to verify various claims, especially regarding whether or not an actor was or wasn't gay, I kept encountering Datalounge in the search results. Man I'm old. Believe it or not, it was a frau forum on Google groups back in the early 2000s (2002 or 2003). It was a celebrity Gossip Google sub group and a great was a moderator and a celebrity's sexuality was being discussed. I don't remember whom they were discussing, but the moderator was very disappointed, she said something kind of life "sadly, I think he is gay, they're discussing him on Datalounge". I was like what is that? So I googled it and I found on the homepage the 9/11 thread so being discussed and I started the and read every single page on that thread. And I was hooked. This is where I discovered terms like troll, queen, fag, cunt, dyke being used cavalierly and gratuitously but not in a derogatory way. I'm black so the racism did bother me, the "please don't let them be black" and "simian" comments on crime threads upset me a lot but I take it for what it is, a huh of all kinds of LGBTQ folks, even the racist ones.

Same way as a lot of previous posters. My internet searches kept turning up DL hits. At first, I was repelled and clutching pearls reading the DL threads. DL is hilarious, smart, random (in a good way), & yes, sophisticated. I actually like the care that goes into spelling and grammar. DL is a cut above a lot of sites. I like that it's mostly anonymous. I found that in sites where everybody has a handle / avatar, people actually form cliques. I hate that. There are enough cliques in "real life."

In 1997 I was a much younger lez. My wife and I had just bought our first home computer and I had left my previous job to work in a different department. The gay male co-worker training me and I were talking about how computers had changed life. I mentioned the MSN discussion forums that I had found, which included a gay and lesbian one. He was unimpressed and introduced me to DataLounge. (FWIW it was an inappropriate site to be visiting at work even then, but there were no pictures at the time and DIAGF was still to come so not quite the level of inappropriate it is now.) I mostly lurked for the first two decades.

1999, I was reading a gossip forum and on a thread about Kevin spacey someone linked to DL. Been here ever since.

I was googling if an obscure actor was gay and couldn’t find the goss anywhere else. Google recommended a snarky DL thread. The snark, the humour has kept me addicted to DL.

In 2013, Googling rumors about Henry Cavill being gay 🤣 . I now check several times a day and have gotten strange looks when I bust out laughing in public. I've learned so much.

Came from a soap opera site and never left. Like other posters, became addicted to all the snark and gossip. It's a wonder I'm not dead from a grease fire....lol.

I found it to be a shockingly terse, frank and "totally lacking manners or redeeming quality" website. I am astonished that I hung around here. It is truly a stinking pile of horse-shit, just as it advertises itself.
