Guy Branum is triggered by "The Whale" film starring Brendan Fraser and bashes it
"I think that the source material of ‘The Whale’ is problematic. I think that it’s trying to use extreme fatness as a metaphor for gay pain. And as an actual fat gay person, I feel like my life doesn’t need to be a metaphor for somebody else’s pain.
I also have real problems with the fact that they cast a straight actor who is not very fat, and [who] used prosthetics to represent fatness, in the film. I think it allows people to talk about that character as an object in a way that wouldn’t be possible if it were an actual fat person who you had to look in the eyes.
We all want Brendan Fraser to have a great comeback. We all want this moment for him, but we also need to think about how much we are representing queer life and fat life through straight actors or prosthetics.”

Jesus fucking Christ. He objects to his own perception of a metaphor? Go eat your feelings, dude.

Another gay lardass mad about this movie.
You want a role in a big Hollywood movie cunt? Put down the onion rings and pickup a jump rope, bitch.

Isn't he somewhat a trigger magnet? Seems he gets triggered quite easily.

Remember Ye Olden Days when if you didn't like what you heard or read about a movie, you just didn't go see it? Nobody felt compelled to write a fucking essay about why they thought nobody else should see it.
I miss those days.

Good luck finding a 600lb gay male actor with the chops to deliver the Brendan Fraser role. Maybe a co-production with Dr Nowzaradan.
Fucking ridiculous.

Brendan should just come out as queer. It barely has a meaning anymore, so he doesn't actually have to be it.

Yes to what r11 said - who are these morbidly obese gay actors that these whiny randos want to star in a movie? Is there supposed to be an open call? I bet the same MARYs complaining would go apeshit if there was a casting notice for middle-aged gay men who are over 300 pounds.

How does Branum even qualify as a comedian at this point? All he does is complain about other people’s success.

He's just pissed the role wasn't offered to him.

I hope Brendan wins the Oscar so this fat ass and that lard ass from Mean Girls can chow down on their Kentucky Fried Chicken as they watch Fraser win while tears stream down their faces, knowing they will never win an Oscar but may get cast as the sassy friend in a Hallmark movie.

I’m excited for Fraser’s comeback. He seems like a good bloke, hard working, endured a great deal. The footage of him crying at Venice (?) was extremely touching.

WTF is wrong with fat people? We had nothing to do with their fattyfattiness and have no interest in the problems that has caused them.

I will never get on board with this assertion that ONLY fat people should play fat people, or only gay actors should take gay roles. Leave the races alone, because obviously that’s tacky, but otherwise it’s ACTING.

Even if I thought something like this, I'd never make a public statement about it because the most popular response will only ever be:
"Overweight person projects his feelings onto a film. Maybe lose the weight, then you'll be happier?"

I’m sure he said this with a straight face and without irony, because he probably believes it perfectly fine when a man decides to self-identify as a woman, throws on a dress and wig and a set of fake tits and claims to have the lived experience of being a woman.

Curiously noone of the actors who complain about this have nothing against Fraser and all seem to be happy he is getting recognition.
Of course you are going to be upset if you think only gay actors can play gay roles but in my oppinion an actor's work is playing someone who is different from himself.
Anyway, the debate is good, because maybe Fraser is great in the role but there are a good bunch of straight actors playing gay roles that are very far from good and it's difficult to understand why those roles weren't for openly gay actors

I like Guy Branum, but he always goes on a self-righteous tirade like this whenever the subject of fatness comes up, as if no one is allowed to discuss it other than fat people. It's quite obvious this is his security blanket in life and he's afraid to let it go. Just get on Wegovy, dude, you'll feel better and you'll live longer. Maybe he's afraid he won't be funny anymore without this fat-related jadedness, like how Lisa Lampanelli lost the funny when she got her stomach stapled. Whatever the case, a man his age shouldn't be talking like this.

There is no difference. It’s just as insulting for a straight guy to put on “gay face” for a gay role as it would be for a white guy to darken his skin for a black role.

How does he feel about his costar in Bros, Luke McFarlane, playing straight on Hallmark all these years? No straight roles for gays?
Remember all the outcry from straight actors about their roles going to Luke? Me neither.

I wouldn't have watched The Whale if they had cast some no-name fatty. Or a no-name gay, fatty. Part of what made me want to see TW was Brendan, who's physical fall from grace and personal struggles, are of interest to me after having seen so many of his earlier (hunkier --wow!) roles.
If that upsets my fellows or upsets the overweight, oh well. Wait two years and try doing a remake, with some random queer, fatty. See how that goes. Good luck!

I thought Branum was one of the weakest performers in “Bros”—substituting pointless bitchery for actual characterization. Maybe the problem isn’t with lack of representation by actors who fit the character’s identity per se but in a decision to cast a less than skilled actor in a role just because he fits the social and physical identity. Surely there are fat, aging, unattractive gay actors out there who can actually act and wouldn’t get cast just because they are part of a clique of gay stand-ups (and he was never very funny on Chelsea).

r31 Agreed. It's especially egregious when they then get awards for "the courage of portraying a gay character", like it's some affliction or something. Just prioritise gay actors for gay roles when you do casting calls, this isn't rocket science and there's plenty of gay actors out there who'd jump at the opportunity.

You're being obtuse on purpose. You know full well gay actors don't regularly get prestigious awards for transforming into straight roles. Until this changes and there are better opportunities out there with a more level playing field and we get gay actors who are proper box office draws, your argument simply doesn't hold water. It just reminds me of people who claim they don't see racism because they're so enlightened.
