Mr Covid finally found me

After months of sitting at home I decided to head back out in the world and started getting sick yesterday. I did a home test in my hotel room and it came back positive. I have had five injections so haven't been irresponsible. It sucks. Worse is being away from friends who would have been able to help me out if I were home.

by Anonymousreply 494November 1, 2022 10:44 AM

Were you wearing a mask?

by Anonymousreply 1October 1, 2022 10:56 AM

Sorry to hear that, OP. Being sick while far from home is the worst. I hope at least yours is a very mild case.

by Anonymousreply 2October 1, 2022 10:59 AM

feel better soon

by Anonymousreply 3October 1, 2022 11:00 AM

Yes, I had been careful with the mask but had to take it off on the plane in order to eat. It was a long flight. I suspect that is when I caught it. If this is mild covid I do wonder what the other variety is like. My legs and lower back hurt so much I can barely stand up. Anyway, season 3 of Ramy dropped yesterday so maybe that will distract me.

by Anonymousreply 4October 1, 2022 11:07 AM

I hope you feel better soon, OP!

Shit OP, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you get through this without getting too sick, so you can get back home.

by Anonymousreply 8October 1, 2022 12:57 PM

In the long run, Mr. Gravity will be a lot worse.

by Anonymousreply 10October 1, 2022 1:09 PM

I got it over Labor Day, hacking cough that brought up blood. Took Paxlovid, and after 4 days felt a lot better. I guess I had pneumonia, because my breathing got better. This stuff is real. Feel better OP.

by Anonymousreply 11October 1, 2022 1:21 PM

Is it worth taking Paxlovid? People say it lessons the symptoms quickly but then a week later they all come back

by Anonymousreply 12October 1, 2022 1:43 PM

[quote]Stealth anti-vax thread.

I hope that was a feeble attempt at humor. Otherwise, you're hopelessly stupid.

by Anonymousreply 13October 1, 2022 1:46 PM

Five times vaccinated?? The new one only just came out

by Anonymousreply 14October 1, 2022 1:53 PM

If you were able to get five injections, then I'm guessing you must have an autoimmune condition because the rest of us have had only four.

And if your immune system is that compromised, why are you away at some hotel in the first place?

by Anonymousreply 15October 1, 2022 2:02 PM

R11 here, Paxlovid worked wonders for me. The congestion and bad cough were gone in a week. I slept in a chair the lst few nights, it was painful to sleep on my back or right side those first few days. I was told to only go to the ER if I couldn't breathe(!) - that almost happened, as I think I had a panic attack, but I talked myself out of it.

by Anonymousreply 16October 1, 2022 2:04 PM

Comfort and convalescing, OP. Get well soon.

by Anonymousreply 17October 1, 2022 2:05 PM

I got my fifth shot yesterday. Why are you doubting OP?

by Anonymousreply 18October 1, 2022 2:06 PM

Second booster was given to anyone over fifty who wanted it. The new, omicron specific booster is the third booster. Five shots is totally feasible.

by Anonymousreply 19October 1, 2022 2:19 PM

Op here. I had my 5th injection about two weeks ago at Costco. It may be an age thing. I am over 65. I was given an antiviral today so hopefully it will work. I am surprised by the severe lower back pain. It is hard even to sit up.

by Anonymousreply 20October 1, 2022 2:25 PM

Keep in mind that Covid is constantly mutating and these mutations rapidly circulate all over the world. And these mutations currently are much easier to catch than the previous ones. So things you were doing that were perfectly safe earlier this year could get you a big old viral load right now.

The vaccine doesn't make you immune to Covid, but it does make it far less likely that if you do catch it you won't get as sick. Given that this is a virus that works by shredding your lungs and causing collateral damage in your brain, circulatory system, and other vital parts of your body, that's a HUGE benefit.

by Anonymousreply 21October 1, 2022 2:32 PM

Sorry to hear, feel better soon.

The back pain is interesting. My sister wound up with a ruptured disc, and COVID was the only factor during that time period. (doctors kept asking her if she'd been in a car accident)

by Anonymousreply 22October 1, 2022 2:44 PM

R15 The rest of us have not all had four, so speak for yourself. I had ONE J&J shot last year and no Covid to date. Looks like I made the correct choice of vaccines, and I'm in my 50s and have an autoimmune disorder. You paranoid types can get all the boosters you like, but since they were not designed for the strains of the virus currently out there you might as well be injecting sterile water.

by Anonymousreply 23October 1, 2022 2:44 PM

Actually the new boosters are targeted at current strains, r23.

by Anonymousreply 24October 1, 2022 2:46 PM

It really sucks that we will be living with the threat of covid for many years. A Chinese lady eats a bat in Wuhan and we get to suffer forever.

by Anonymousreply 25October 1, 2022 2:50 PM

I had my 5th Moderna on Wednesday. This one was a little harder than the second and two boosters. It was similar to the initial vaccination and took about 48 hours to feel better. All low-grade stuff but it all added up and made me useless on Thursday. I slowly started to feel better on Friday and am back to normal today.

[quote]I had ONE J&J shot last year and no Covid to date. Looks like I made the correct choice of vaccines

R23 - I had four Pfizer shots and have had no covid to date either.

And I eat at restaurants, go to movie theaters, have gone to see several Broadway shows and NJSO concerts, and saw a comic at MSG.

So it looks like I made the correct choice as well.

by Anonymousreply 29October 1, 2022 3:08 PM

Oh, and I went to a big fat wedding.

by Anonymousreply 30October 1, 2022 3:09 PM

I had one booster shot but was waiting for the latest one to come out before I caught Covid on a cruise ship, which is one giant Petrie dish. Luckily I started feeling sick on the last day. The second night was the worst, I felt chills that were so bad I couldn’t get out of bed. Worst I’ve felt in years. But by the third day I was feeling like it was just a crappy cold. And luckily, no real cough or congestion in the lungs. Just a sore throat and nasal congestion. The weird thing is I tested positive for nearly two weeks after, but felt fine. I’m sure the vaccine helped keep the virus out of my lungs.

by Anonymousreply 31October 1, 2022 3:18 PM

Who wants OP's stuff?

by Anonymousreply 32October 1, 2022 3:19 PM

R24 You mean the one that isn't available yet? Kaiser Permanente said they will let us know when they get any.

by Anonymousreply 33October 1, 2022 4:20 PM

R33, it’s pretty much available everywhere. I’ve gotten a bunch of notices from my doctor, pharmacy etc.

by Anonymousreply 34October 1, 2022 4:22 PM

"Bet you thought that monkeypox vaccine you got was going to protect you too. "

The monkeypox vaccine is more effective after the 1st shot than any of the covid OR flu vaccines.

Anyway I got my 5th last week. I guess I'm used to feeling like a pin cushion at this pointy but I felt nothing going in and zero side effects. (Pfizer)

by Anonymousreply 35October 1, 2022 4:26 PM

R29 Glad to hear it, but my choice was just as effective and only took about a half hour on one day, including walking there and back and the 15 minutes they make you wait after the shot. You went four separate times and I'll bet you drove far away and stood in line for a long while for at least one of them.

by Anonymousreply 36October 1, 2022 4:32 PM

The husbear and I are getting our fourth Moderna vax today. I don't know anybody who has had five. Damn this thing is a mean bitch.

Feel better OP. Where are you?

by Anonymousreply 37October 1, 2022 4:35 PM

Can I have your stuff?

by Anonymousreply 38October 1, 2022 4:42 PM

R34 The omicron-specific boosters have only come to market in the past 3 weeks. There is limited availability of one of the boosters and none of it yet in my region.

by Anonymousreply 39October 1, 2022 5:15 PM

R23 Ignorantly and stupidly believes that what worked for him should work for the other 7.8 billion humans on the planet without deviation.

I’m sure the CDC and international health organizations the world over will be all ears and ready to focus the brunt of their attentions after listening to your singular experience.

by Anonymousreply 40October 1, 2022 5:17 PM

R39 yes, I’m aware—this has been in the last couple of weeks. I’m in a large urban area in the NE part of the country. I haven’t tried to make an appointment so I don’t know if there’s a backlog.

by Anonymousreply 43October 1, 2022 5:26 PM

I'll be getting my fifth shot this month. I believe OP got 5 shots. Get well soon!

by Anonymousreply 44October 1, 2022 5:43 PM

Quick, apply for disability, you probably will get long COVID.

by Anonymousreply 45October 1, 2022 6:01 PM

Op here. Honestly, people do not realize the Omicron specific booster has been available the past few weeks? It may be restricted at this point to older people so perhaps that is the confusion. Believe me. You wouldn't want my stuff. I am presently suffering in Bangkok. I was to start a Thai writing class in Monday but maybe not now. I will be sad to miss it. Presently I am in a 12 month journey and hopefully this will not trip me up. And I still feel like shit. Sleep an hour then up an hour.

by Anonymousreply 46October 1, 2022 6:08 PM

oh, I just checked. The Omicron booster is available to all in the USA. Some people really need to get out of the house more.

by Anonymousreply 47October 1, 2022 6:10 PM

OP even if you're male the American Women's Club of Bangkok will come to your aid (assuming you're American) . These bored hags love to help others. Don't hesitate to call them if you need something.

So you're not alone. Feel better.

Great tip about the women's club. I wonder if the would whip me up some vegetarian chicken soup. I am in a hotel which is having a soft reopening and the restaurants are closed. To add to that misery the hotel doesn't allow Uber eats or Grab eats as it's called here. I think they would make an exception if I told them I had Covid but I am sort of worried they would kick me out of the hotel if they knew I was sick.

by Anonymousreply 49October 1, 2022 6:31 PM

No. I live in NJ where everything is thisclose, easy to access and staffed - not in some sparsely populated hinterland.

by Anonymousreply 50October 1, 2022 6:48 PM

R41 I'm in DC, and the Moderna booster is not available at KP yet, I just checked. So, if a major healthcare provider with locations in the nation's capital do not have it, I'd say it's not readily available.

by Anonymousreply 51October 1, 2022 7:12 PM

R50 Aww, you live in NJ? Your life sucks compared to mine even when we're not at the end of a pandemic. You don't even HAVE a city, you leech your limited culture from Philly and NYC.

by Anonymousreply 52October 1, 2022 7:15 PM

Have you heard of anyone experiencing side effects with their arm(s), months after the vaccine?

by Anonymousreply 53October 1, 2022 7:26 PM

R51--You could probably get it at any Walgreen's or CVS. They seem to be advertising. My local health system's clinics don't have it yet either but the chain pharmacies certainly do.

by Anonymousreply 54October 1, 2022 7:28 PM

R54 But I'm not paranoid or in any rush. I have, however, recently started taking Cosentyx and will speak to my PCP in 2 weeks when I'm there for my first Shingrix vax and this year's flu shot to see when it might be appropriate. Some drugs should not be administered within a certain time frame of taking other drugs.

by Anonymousreply 55October 1, 2022 7:44 PM

Feel better OP. This new strain of Covid is no joke.

by Anonymousreply 56October 1, 2022 7:46 PM

I'm also in DC, R41 and got my Moderna bivalent booster at CVS with about three days notice on the app. Wild that Kaiser doesn't have it yet. Even the DC.gov district clinics have it. Why wait if they're dragging ass?

by Anonymousreply 57October 1, 2022 7:57 PM

R57 Because I don't care enough and think it is highly unlikely that I am in a high-risk group for it. They have the newest Pfizer at KP and I might get it if the doctor thinks I should.

by Anonymousreply 62October 1, 2022 8:38 PM

[quote] [R23] - I had four Pfizer shots and have had no covid to date either.

Time to remind people (again) that vaccines do not prevent you from being infected by viruses.

Vaccines are not tiny orbiting laser batteries that zap the virus before it can get into your system.

Vaccines teach your body how to fight the virus. You’ll still get infected but you’re vastly less likely to get seriously ill or die.

by Anonymousreply 63October 1, 2022 8:40 PM

^ for OP re the American Women's Club.

The husbear and I went to Walmart today for the newest booster. All our previous shots were Moderna. This time we were given Pfiser. The pharmacist said no problem mixing them so we'll see if this booster affects us differently.

by Anonymousreply 64October 1, 2022 8:49 PM

How do people who are afraid of needles ever deal with having actual surgery where they cut you open?

by Anonymousreply 65October 1, 2022 9:56 PM

I just got my omicron booster an hour ago (fifth shot after the double Pfizer vaccine and two Moderna boosters). I fully expect to be bedridden for most of tomorrow, but hope the side effects clear up by Monday. Will drinking lots of water help?

The pharmacist who gave me the shot told me that covid is rampant in my area, worse than ever (I hope he was exaggerating), but all that is invisible because cases aren't being formally tested and recorded. He was judging from the number of scripts (for Paxlovid) that he's been getting.

by Anonymousreply 66October 1, 2022 10:14 PM

All this craziness for a glorified cold? Sure go get your useless injections. Your all too stupid to live, honestly.

Favipiravir, sold under the brand name Avigan among others,[3] is an antiviral medication used to treat influenza in Japan.[4] It is also being studied to treat a number of other viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2.[4] Like the experimental antiviral drugs T-1105 and T-1106, it is a pyrazinecarboxamide derivative.[5]

It is being developed and manufactured by Toyama Chemical (a subsidiary of Fujifilm) and was approved for medical use in Japan in 2014.[6] In 2016, Fujifilm licensed it to Zhejiang Hisun Pharmaceutical Co.[7] It became a generic drug in 2019.[citation needed]

by Anonymousreply 89October 2, 2022 1:43 AM

I expected the doctor to give some guidance. I told her I wanted to take antivirals. She then asked me which one I wanted. I asked her what she would recommend and she again asked me which one I wanted. This happened three times. I saw a pricelist on her wall and asked her what was best. She never said. I would have been better off being my own doctor and going to a pharmacy after doing some research. I know nothing about antivirals in Thailand.

by Anonymousreply 90October 2, 2022 1:50 AM

"How do people who are afraid of needles ever deal with having actual surgery where they cut you open?"

with a buttload of stress, anxiety and panic. I've been afraid of needles since a teen. I was 50 when I had surgery. I had to have numerous needles. To top it off, I have thick skin (not the emotional kind...I wish but like walrus skin) so my veins are hard to find. Finding a vein is like finding a needle in a haystack. Surgery itself was a breeze since I was knocked out.

Ok Matt-fatso so you have no concern whatsoever about Islamic terrorism, or let’s say crimes committed by illegal aliens. And in fact you don’t care about those things at all.

Because the deaths caused by covid are VASTLY greater in numbers than either of those — hundreds of thousands of times higher in fact. And you’re just shrugging the million dead people off.

So you need to shut up about the dangers of Islamic terrorism and illegal alien crime. Right?

by Anonymousreply 92October 2, 2022 2:55 AM

COVID is no joke and most ppl I know are experiencing a few days of horror but they get better and fully recover.

Please keep us posted, we can’t help you there but we can keep you company and send prayers your way. Be well.

by Anonymousreply 110October 3, 2022 10:19 AM

Feel better OP. I felt very sick in May when I finally got it. I completely agree about the sore throat.

Sending you love.

by Anonymousreply 111October 3, 2022 10:23 AM

Both my partner and I got our omicron specific booster about 4 days ago at RiteAid. Same day scheduled too. So that makes 5 shots so far. Not to mention flu shot and 2 monkypox shots. So OP's story is totally believable. Tired of felling like a pin cushion, but I guess it's better than the alternative. So far never of us has gotten "Mr. Covid". And we get out, went to a Gaga Concert in Dodger Stadium a few weeks ago and I guess the vaccines worked. No Covid.

by Anonymousreply 112October 3, 2022 10:32 AM

You weren't on a long-haul flight like OP.

by Anonymousreply 113October 3, 2022 10:43 AM

True R113, have not been on a plane for 2 years because of Covid.

by Anonymousreply 114October 3, 2022 10:47 AM

The new booster is available in the US for anyone over age 12. I got mine and a flu shot last week.

by Anonymousreply 115October 3, 2022 11:45 AM

I mentioned above that I had Covid a month ago, and while it did feel like a bad cold, at its worst (lasted one night) I felt truly as worse as I’ve felt in years—probably since I was a kid. I had uncontrollable chills and a fever. I could not get out of bed and walk three feet for Advil. But I didn’t have breathing or coughing problems and I recovered pretty quickly. And I have no issues with long Covid now (so far). A friend unfortunately got it before the vaccine and had a terrible time with coughing and scarily a bit with breathing. He also has long Covid issues—headaches and stomach aches he did not have before.

I am triple vaxxed and getting my booster soon. I am absolutely sure that if I were not vaxxed, it would have been much worse.

by Anonymousreply 116October 3, 2022 12:19 PM

OP here from one of his many naps. I completely screwed up my meds. I was supposed to take 12 pills twice a day but instead took one. How was this possible. So I am way behind on my antivirals. I did call the embassy and they said they would call twice a day to check on me. The school I was to attend arranged a delivery from 7 eleven so I have water, juice and cups of noodles plus some animal products I will not eat. The embassy said they could arrange a caregiving. After I screwed up the meds I think I do need some help so will say yes in the morning . I tried to watch interview with the vampire but fell asleep a few minutes in. In the future if I do a long flight I will skip the meals and fast for 12 hours. That or break the trip in Honolulu and Tokyo. Thanks for the ideas. This really sucks.

by Anonymousreply 117October 3, 2022 12:59 PM

You did say you had trouble understanding the instructions from the Dr?

by Anonymousreply 118October 3, 2022 1:07 PM

I know but it was clearly written on the prescription in English. I don't know what I was thinking.

by Anonymousreply 119October 3, 2022 1:38 PM

I finally got COVID as well. It was inevitable as I work in an elementary school. I thought it was a bad cold at first, then possibly pneumonia because of the cough. Then I went and tested positive for COVID.

I got hives from the antibiotics they gave me for my bronchial symptoms but I think I’m feeling better. I haven’t lost my sense of smell or taste but do feel very drained and lethargic. I was actually craving some Thai lemongrass soup.

by Anonymousreply 120October 3, 2022 3:20 PM

R117, a couple of friends had Covid up until last week. There was a lot of coughing and shortness of breath and a lot of sleeping. They were exhausted all the time and this went on for at least a couple of weeks. They’re both testing negative now and still sleep a lot. An hour on, an hour off. Every time they leave the house they have to sleep when they get home. If you can get a pulse oximeter, get one, one friend with pre-existing conditions really had her oxygen level drop. The healthier one was better. Both had every booster available except the new Omnicron. They went on a cruise.

For R55, I think it was, I just had the newest Omnicron vaccine and the flu shot on the same day. One in each arm. My arm was a little sore in the flu shot arm, very sore in the Covid vax arm for several days. They told me at the pharmacy to drink lots of water and move that arm around a lot, which is supposed to lessen the discomfort. I was not able to do either because I had to drive, and my arm was pretty sore for several days. I also had a bruise in the Covid arm around the puncture point. That’s never happened to me before with a vaccine.

I did ask the pharmacist if it was okay to do both Covid and flu shots at the same time, she said it was fine, so I did both. I’d rather get it over with. Other than arm soreness, no other problems.

by Anonymousreply 121October 3, 2022 7:44 PM

[quote]I haven’t lost my sense of smell or taste but do feel

They are saying that does not happen now with the new variant. And if you got it in the last month or two it's 90% chance or higher it's the Omnicron version.

by Anonymousreply 122October 3, 2022 7:49 PM

R122, R121 here. My friend with pre-existing conditions did lose her sense of smell for about a week or a week and a half. That was probably the newest variant. It was either the last week of August or the first week or so of September ‘22.

by Anonymousreply 123October 3, 2022 7:52 PM

I can't decide if the hypochondria coursing through this thread is amusing or just plain sad? Is it mostly eldergays with Aids PTSD? Poz guys overly concerned about their health? The reality is that for most people, even with some underlying conditions, it's just a minor flu, and long COVID is being exaggerated.

by Anonymousreply 124October 3, 2022 7:55 PM

My husband and I have been sick for over a week. Neither one of us has Covid. We’re kind of disappointed. Nobody gives you sympathy when you don’t have Covid.

“I’m sick..”

Oh…Covid?”

No. Really bad cold”

“Meh…”

What is their endgame?

Is it just contrarianism that motivates?

I had both Omicron booster and flu in the same arm.

It was sore later that day but only if I poked at it

Fine the next day

by Anonymousreply 128October 3, 2022 8:10 PM

I understand people who have a phobia for needles and resist vaccination.

I understand people who are paranoid about vaccines that appeared "out of nowhere" with perceived minimal testing.

But Maga goes further than resist vaccination, maga denies the existence of a public health threat.

Why?

Maga won't wear a mask when required. There's no risk to wearing a face mask.

Maga doesn't observe social distancing. They can't respect the personal space of others even while screeching MYBODYMYCHOICE.

Maga, mostly un or undereducated types threatens and mocks researchers and doctors who devoted their professional lives to the study of virus and epidemics.

What is the end game?

Is the end game reducing the United States to permanent shithole status?

Moderna booster tapped me out. Low grade fever, pain in arm, swollen lymph nodes and fatigue.

They're meant to keep you from dying of COVID

What happens when we boost with a bivalent vaccine? Our immune memory expands AND is better equipped to handle current variants by updating our repertoire of antibodies! Our immune systems make NEW B-cell responses to Omicron EVEN IF previously immunized with “classic spike.”

I went to my medium-sized local Kaiser to get a flu shot and the third Omicron-specific booster. Flu shots were being given away in the lobby, no problem, but the nurse said there is only ONE Kaiser in my area — a 30-minute drive away — that was administering the shot.

Went to Costco and they had plenty of all the shots. In and out (and you don't have to be a member to use the pharmacy).

OP, I hope you feel better. I sympathize with you not being able to take your writing class. That sounds like a dream you've had for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 146October 4, 2022 10:47 PM

OP here. I feel like I am back from the ashes. What a ride that was. I can't imagine what it would be like without my five injections. I suppose I will have a lifetime of mask wearing to avoid catching it again. And fasting 12 hours on a long distance flight might be preferred to removing my mask and risking catching covid again. Thanks for all the kind thoughts guys while I was ill. I guess speaking fluent Thai will have to be enough for me. That's okay I guess. So many "it cant happen to me and if it does its no big deal" Qeens on this thread.

My brother-in-law got long term Covid before the vaccines came out. It dragged on for 6 months. Fucked up his lungs, now he has COPD and he was perfectly healthy before that. In the late 2010s, researchers found that increases in Russian disinformation activity on Twitter were correlated with increases in polarising conversations regarding the Black Lives Matter movement.

One such activity included Russian accounts mimicking Black Lives Matter activists, or supported issues central to the Black Lives Matter cause.

Activities on Facebook include purchasing ads to promote Black Lives Matter.

Reporting by investigative journalists uncovered Russian links with Facebook pages promoting Black Lives Matter.

In one instance, Russian activities on social media led to real-life protests on behalf of Black Lives Matter.

Prior to this development, in 2010, a report commissioned for the United States Senate Intelligence Committee, the Russian firm Internet Research Agency was identified as creating social media accounts as part of a complex campaign to suppress the black American vote. However, subsequently, investigative journalists found that the Russian firm sought to promote the issue of Black Lives Matter in order to instigate mistrust in US law enforcement and political institutions

Facts, inflammatory opinions, and outright falsehoods are all components of a successful disinformation playbook.

In their typology of IRA Twitter accounts, Linvill and Warren (2018) separate political users on the left and right from so-called “Fearmongers” whose main purpose is to spread fabricated news stories.

Our results reveal that political IRA users also trafficked in falsehoods alongside factual content and extreme opinions. While previous research has noted this tendency (Howard et al., 2018), we find false content among the ranks of the most widely-discussed tweets, especially on the right. The IRA’s strategy of posting about nonexistent events can only be successful if authentic users engage with and spread such content at scale. This opens the possibility that it may have had some degree of political impact.

OP, do you have any underlying health conditions? Did you take Paxlovid? This Covid stuff scares me.

by Anonymousreply 154October 5, 2022 4:53 AM

OP here. I am pretty healthy but my age at 67 plus the extra 10 pounds I carry could have been a negative cofactor for me. Yes, you take a bundle of pills on the antivirals. It was actually 20 pills a day but I screwed up the first couple of days. I am now on 5 pills twice a day. I have a few more days of taking those. I was not offered Paxlovid and am not sure it is even sold in Thailand. I am feeling much better and happy the sore throat and feverish are gone. It all really sucked.

by Anonymousreply 155October 5, 2022 7:20 AM

The doctor said nothing about a quarantine. I used the CDC calculator and it said I was good to go out on the 6th while wearing a mask. I will continue to avoid contact with people for a few more days. Bangkok offers a ton of outdoor food choices and I feel confident outdoors. Oh, and 7 eleven delivers here. And tell the guy to knock and drop it at my door so he doesn't have an exposure.

No, obesity is a risk factor but an extra 10 pounds isn't going to make any difference.

This is just a mystifying disease. I know a straight couple, he's a marathon runner, thin as a rail, she's probably 40 pounds overweight and sedentary. He had a hell of a time with covid and is still not able to run, five months later. She got it and had no symptoms whatsoever.

Who knew there are 7-11s in Thailand?

by Anonymousreply 159October 5, 2022 12:37 PM

I did! I watch videos about the chain on youtube. The 7/11 in Asia are superior than anything we have here.

by Anonymousreply 160October 5, 2022 12:42 PM

An interesting video about the history of 7/11 in Japan revealed Japanese investors purchased the rights to operate the chain in Japan by grifters who only sold them the brandname for an obscene amount of money. The rights to operate 7/11 equipment and even the instructions how to use the equipment were sold separately and piece by piece very expensively.

Ultimately, Japanese investors figured out how to operate the chain so successfully that when the American chain experienced an economic downturn, they were bailed out by their Japanese investors.

Not sure if this is best question for this thread so don’t be surprised to se sit in another thread if it goes unanswered.

They say you can get both shots at the same time, flu and the new improved Covid shot, but should you? Are there extra risks to that? Don’t depend on untrained staff at Walgreens to tell you. Some of them are doing shots all out in the open which is disgusting to me and possibly a hills violation.

I just wonder about two shots at once. Both efficacy and possible unpleasant outcomes.

Nothing has changed here. The 7 Eleven revolution is amazing. On one hand it is nice having a clean air conditioned store to shop in but some speculate they are what is behind Thailand's recent entry into the world of obesity. by Anonymousreply 183October 6, 2022 2:19 AM

Glad you're OK, OP, and thanks for posting detailed symptoms. I'm 62, overweight, and until a few days ago, a heavy smoker. Finally quit because I'll be having surgery in a few weeks. Reading your posts reminds me that I'm at high risk of getting very sick from COVID, despite being 5X vaxxed, and it's making me not want to go buy a pack, and just keep chewing the nicotine gum, so thanks. I mean khob khun khrup!!

Was in Bangkok 12 years ago. Strangely, what stands out to me most is eating fried chicken livers on skewers from a street vendor. I couldn't stop, and I generally hate liver! (Note: was normal weight back then)

by Anonymousreply 184October 6, 2022 4:48 AM

R164. Good luck with the quit. I was a smoker myself once and do wonder how I would have handled this illness if I were still smoking. And now all Thai hotels are nonsmoking so it would have meant venturing out in the rain in a feverish dream for a smoke. What an image. Thailand was where I first started at age 14. I was the shame of the 7rh Day Adventist missionary community. Lol. Listen find yourself a good online support group. I was on a quit group at about.com. A new Covid-19 wave appears to be brewing in Europe as cooler weather arrives, with public health experts warning that vaccine fatigue and confusion over types of shots available will likely limit booster uptake.

Omicron subvariants BA.4/5 that dominated this summer are still behind the majority of infections, but newer Omicron subvariants are gaining ground. Hundreds of new forms of Omicron are being tracked by scientists, World Health Organization (WHO) officials said this week.

Cases in the European Union reached 1.5 million last week, up 8% from the prior week, despite a dramatic fall in testing. In the week ending October 4, Covid-19 hospital admissions with symptoms jumped nearly 32% in Italy, while intensive care admissions rose about 21%, compared to the week before.

Over the same week, Covid hospitalizations in Britain saw a 45% increase versus the week earlier.

Rarely do I see a Thai without a mask on. So different from the resistance to wearing them in the USA.

by Anonymousreply 241October 8, 2022 8:32 PM

With the new wave of coronavirus infections already on its way, the Swiss government has recommended that masks be worn in crowded indoor venues, including on public transport and in stores — places and situations that are most conducive to contamination.

“Along with vaccination, individual behaviour is also important to protect yourself and others”, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) said in a statement on Thursday.

While a mask mandate is not expected to be implemented, “individual responsibility is gaining in importance”,

I got Covid about sept 1. It wasn't severe at all. I had the J&J vaccine and two Moderna boosters. I had an occasional cough, but no breathing problems. I had a slight fever but only 1oo one time and then 99. I got diarrhea which has been reported with those who had been vaccinated. Imodium stopped that. My dr gave me Paxlovid and after the 5 days, the test was only slightly pink. A few days later I again felt feverish and was back at 99. I retested and it was bright pink. I rebounded. I had about 24 hours where I stuffed up and sneezed a lot. After about 4 days I tested negative and it was over. I should now have natural immunity until the virus mutates significantly. I saw a recommendation to take the new booster if you have had the virus after about 2 months, which I will do. Over all it was no worse than a bad cold or mild flu.

by Anonymousreply 256October 9, 2022 7:23 AM

Three vaccines for the prevention of COVID-19 are currently authorised for use in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

According to the vaccination recommendation of the FOPH/NITAG vaccination recommendation, to have full vaccine protection, two doses of the Moderna vaccine (Spikevax®) or Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine (Comirnaty®) are required, or one dose following a documented recent SARS-CoV-2 infection. For Johnson & Johnson (Covid-19 Vaccine Janssen®), a single dose of vaccine is required to be deemed fully vaccinated.

Those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but who have not yet had a booster vaccination are still deemed to be fully vaccinated.

The efficacy of the vaccines available in Switzerland is very high.

They provide effective protection against symptomatic infection, in particular severe forms of the disease, and they reduce the risk of transmission.

However, this does not mean that those who are fully vaccinated (with or without a booster vaccination) cannot become infected, as no vaccine provides 100% protection

From the "people are scum" files:

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 40% of Americans were untruthful about whether they had the virus or were ignoring safety precautions.

Folks ignored quarantine rules, told someone they were about to see that they had been taking more precautions than they actually were, and didn't mention they might or did have COVID-19 when they entered a doctor's office. They were also untruthful about vaccination status, claiming they were vaccinated when they weren't or that they were unvaccinated when they had taken the jab.

When you ask maga what is meant by this, they tell you Cuomo covered up nursing home deaths from covid.

How can a governor cover up deaths from an infection that doesn't exist?

While long COVID’s impact on people is still being critically studied, new research found that the virus may increase the risk of developing memory problems and even Alzheimer’s in the year after initial infection.

“It’s really sobering,” says epidemiologist and researcher on the study Ziyad Al-Aly in an interview with WBUR. “COVID-19 is really not as benign as some people think it is.”

Plus, don't you owe us? Didn't DL save your life?

by Anonymousreply 317October 13, 2022 9:12 PM

OP here. Yes, DL did come to my aid when needed. You guys even surprised me with all your kindness and tips. It is funny about Thailand. In many ways it is the best place to be in regards to Covid. 99 per cent of the locals wear a mask even when walking on the sidewalk. They did a better job managing the disease when it was still terrible to catch it. There was no resistance to mask wearing and taking the vaccine. I wish I had been here for the dark days of Covid. It was never made a political issue like in the USA. In many ways the USA is the ultimate shit hole.

by Anonymousreply 318October 13, 2022 9:58 PM

Thais are obviously paranoid Asian sheep. Wearing a mask, even while walking outdoors is beyond ridiculous!

by Anonymousreply 319October 14, 2022 2:46 AM

I just got the booster AND I wear a mask outdoors, an N95 to be exact. You can never be too careful! Omicron variants are incredibly contagious, and studies have shown that airborne transmission outdoors is definitely possible.

by Anonymousreply 320October 14, 2022 2:51 AM

I finally got Covid after being extremely careful for two and half years last month, likely from the supermarket. I had one day where I felt like total 💩, but after that I recovered, though it took over a week before most of the symptoms went away. The only really annoying part is I have long Covid in the form of muscle weakness in my knees and have needed to wear a knee support sleeve for the last several weeks, since it has become hard to bend and walk long distances without it. Not fun.

by Anonymousreply 321October 14, 2022 2:51 AM

Well R319, I haven't worn a mask once since the mandate was lifted locally back in March, not even when getting vaccinated or at the airport. Have never had Covid and don't give a second thought!

I was doubly vaxxed and boosted and still caught COVID after a visit to the dentist's in July. I took Paxlovid right away (which gives you a terrible taste in your mouth) and wasn't any sicker than with a cold though a sore throat and cough dragged on for a month.

by Anonymousreply 327October 14, 2022 7:28 PM

How many pills were you taking for covid, r327? I did read about the terrible aftertaste that medicine leaves behind.

by Anonymousreply 328October 14, 2022 7:32 PM

You have to take 3 a day - I think, funny I can't exactly recall. The treatment last 5 days. Paxlovid is free of charge. After you stop taking it, the bad taste in your mouth goes away. Didn't notice any other side effects.

by Anonymousreply 329October 14, 2022 7:38 PM

I don't think you can blame it on the dentist, COVID spreads very easily. Could it have been that asshole you had your tongue inserted?

Long Covid will cost the world a lot of money.

Not only are long Covid symptoms being experienced by a huge number of people, but the condition also affects younger people who will suffer from the condition through several decades of life – including later years when other illnesses could compound the illness. It’s tough to estimate the worldwide cost long Covid will have. But in the US alone, the condition will cost the economy about $2.6tn, according to Harvard researchers – about a tenth of the annual US GDP.

I think I have COVID. Paging Elderlez- what are you seeing out there?! I woke up with body/muscle aches that developed as the morning went on, a fever (99.9 - normal is 97.8). I have been feeling a little stiff all week, but I work out every day. I cycled and swam yesterday so at first I thought I was just sore. I had a massage on Wed so I shouldn't be that sore. Then it got much worse where I didn't want to move, than the feeling of chills coming on.

I took an Oxycodone 30 minutes ago from when I had my wisdom teeth taken out. 20 minutes ago I would not have been able to move, but I feel much better. I am starving right now as well. I don't have sore throat or cough, but did have a runny nose last night and this morning, but runny noses aren't uncommon for me due to allergies. Covid or the flu? I can't leave my place right now to get a test. This is my first potential go around w/ Covid. I might have had the the OG version in Dec 19/Jan 2020, but I'll never know for sure.

Did anyone else have muscle aches - like very tight legs especially? This is how I usually feel when I have had the flu in the past.

by Anonymousreply 334October 16, 2022 12:01 AM

My on case of covid started the way you described. I felt a little off and then woke up one morning to a very sore lower back and leg pain. It went downhill from there. Get a covid test and if positive go on antivirals. That's the solution.

by Anonymousreply 335October 16, 2022 1:54 AM

Might just be the flu:

“An early increase in seasonal flu activity has been reported in most of the United States, with the nation’s southeast and south-central areas reporting the highest levels of flu, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than a thousand patients have been hospitalized with flu this week, the agency said.”

[quote]An early increase in seasonal flu activity has been reported in most of the United States, with the nation’s southeast and south-central areas reporting the highest levels of flu...

That's strange, isn't it? Doesn't the flu usually hit the colder areas first? Hm, wonder what the difference is this year? Oh, that's right, the smart people in the northern half of the country, minus the morons in most of the Plains states, aren't antivaxxers. So, no masks and no flu vaccines for any of them! I hope the combination of Covid and flu sweeping across the Repug states actually affects the election. Die in ignorance, you stupid fuckers.

by Anonymousreply 341October 16, 2022 2:40 AM

Well, only you can decide if you need antivirals I guess. I took them in order to make the illnesses a little easier to handle. I fucked up the dosage the first two days so really don't know if they helped or not.

by Anonymousreply 342October 16, 2022 3:17 AM

Lol your tone r351. My god Mary! Hiss!!!!!

Point taken, I hear you, but it’s difficult when you live alone and need social interaction. I got covid both times from friends. I never go out to big parties or to bars - I’m way too introverted for that. But I do need to stay in touch with people and go to restaurants occasionally for dinner. If that is playing “Russian roulette,” then so be it. Covid isn’t going anywhere. This is our new reality. I stayed on lockdown in NYC for 2020 and most of 2021 and things got very, very dark mental health wise. I’ve been vaccinated with Moderna and boosted twice and I wear a mask indoors in stores and on public transit, but I can’t totally isolate myself again. If you are able to do that - more power to you.

The author of the article is a doctor I believe if memory serves, and he said most of the long covid is lasting about 12 weeks but people are mostly recovering. My recovery is very slow but it is getting slowly better. I doubt it will last a lifetime.

Boston University CREATES a new Covid strain that has an 80% kill rate — echoing dangerous experiments feared to have started pandemic

US researchers have developed a new lethal Covid strain in a laboratory – echoing the type of experiments many fear started the pandemic.

The mutant variant — which is a hybrid of Omicron and the original Wuhan virus — killed 80 percent of mice infected with it at Boston University.

When a similar group of rodents were exposed to the standard Omicron strain, however, they all survived and only experienced 'mild' symptoms.

The scientists also infected human cells with the hybrid variant and found it was five times more infectious than Omicron. This suggests the man-made virus might be the most contagious form yet.

It will no doubt surprise many Americans that such experiments continue to go on in the US despite concerns similar studies may have led to the global Covid outbreak.

Covid first began spreading from a wet market in Wuhan, China, about eight miles from a similar high-security virology laboratory that manipulated bat coronaviruses.

Chinese scientists were found to have wiped crucial databases and stifled independent investigations into the facility's links to the pandemic.

'Most vaccine-resistant Covid strain ever' sends case numbers soaring in Singapore and is already in the US — but it's 'killing just TWO people per day'

A new Covid variant that is feared to be the 'most vaccine-resistant yet' has sent case numbers soaring in Singapore — and it is already in the US.

The mutant strain — dubbed XBB — is another spin-off of the Omicron variant and has been blamed for Singapore's infection numbers doubling in the past fortnight.

It has accumulated mutations in its receptor binding domain, a key part of the spike protein where virus-fighting antibodies dock and block infections.

I got it on Saturday - the main things were fever, strong muscle aches, especially back and legs, and fatigue. My fever peaked at 102 on Sunday night and a mild upper chest cough/sore throat. By Monday afternoon, my fever broke. It was at its worst for 2.5 days. Last night was my first really good night of sleep. I didn't take any antivirals or medications besides advil, but definitely if the fever and the worst of the symptoms had lasted more than 3-4 days, I would have been on the phone to my MD to get them.

I travelled during omicron through multiple countries, go out, ride public transportation and have been fine. I know what did me in. I have been horny lately and last week I hooked up with 2 dudes from Grindr/Scruff. I need deep, hot kissing to get turned on, so boom, there you go. by Anonymousreply 398October 21, 2022 7:02 AM

Absolutely spiking in NYC but much milder hopefully. Seems more like a seasonal cold anecdotally based on coworkers and friends who have it now (and my experience). Annoying that the omicron booster doesn’t seem to be doing shit to prevent it but if the shot makes your symptoms more mild, then so be it.

It’s so contagious though that it’s hard to avoid unless you are somehow immune (which some people weirdly seem to be) or stay masked whenever indoors.

It’s absolutely never-ending.

by Anonymousreply 399October 21, 2022 11:23 AM

Americans are skipping boosters, so you can’t really say that the omicron booster isn’t doing shit, r399.

by Anonymousreply 400October 21, 2022 11:31 AM

Yes, fewer than 5% of eligible Americans have gotten the booster. Not good news as we enter the cold and flu season.

if we continue on this route, the US could be in for a tough winter, says Waleed Javaid, MD, hospital epidemiologist and director of infection prevention and control at Mount Sinai Downtown in New York City. Specifically, if a lot of people get sick at the same time, we could see disruptions in health care settings again, Dr. Javaid says.

“This year, the indications are that the flu could be much worse than last year,” he says. “Hospital overcrowding can occur for a variety of reasons—COVID, flu, or both—and we don’t want to see that.”

SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted by exposure to infectious respiratory fluids

The principal mode by which people are infected with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) is through exposure to respiratory fluids carrying infectious virus.

Exposure occurs in three principal ways:

(1) inhalation of very fine respiratory droplets and aerosol particles,

(2) deposition of respiratory droplets and particles on exposed mucous membranes in the mouth, nose, or eye by direct splashes and sprays, and

(3) touching mucous membranes with hands that have been soiled either directly by virus-containing respiratory fluids or indirectly by touching surfaces with virus on them.

People release respiratory fluids during exhalation (e.g., quiet breathing, speaking, singing, exercise, coughing, sneezing) in the form of droplets across a spectrum of sizes.1-9 These droplets carry virus and transmit infection.

The largest droplets settle out of the air rapidly, within seconds to minutes.

The smallest very fine droplets, and aerosol particles formed when these fine droplets rapidly dry, are small enough that they can remain suspended in the air for minutes to hours.

I had the latest booster shot (Moderna #5) Friday. Reactive symptoms include some muscle aches, modest headache, very slight fever at times. I do my daily routines but rest more. The arm that took the shot isn’t very sore; only if I press on the injection site. I didn’t want to take another shot, but my physician urged me due to me having a high-risk category.

I’ve never had Covid as far as I know. I got tested a few times when feeling poorly. I was generally careful, using masks, and limited my traveling to essential endeavors.

R438, I keep reading that ivermectin is a veterinary medicine, but I assume people haven't researched it and are just repeating what they see on Twitter, because it's also a human medicine. Wikipedia:

[quote]Approved for human use in 1987, today it is used to treat infestations including head lice, scabies, river blindness (onchocerciasis), strongyloidiasis, trichuriasis, ascariasis and lymphatic filariasis. It works through many mechanisms to kill the targeted parasites, and can be taken orally, or applied to the skin for external infestations.

[quote]William Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for its discovery and applications. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.

I'm not suggesting anyone use an antiparasitic for Covid. I'm just always puzzled when people say it's "horse paste." It does exist as horse paste, and sheep dewormer, but it is also widely used to fight parasites in human beings.

by Anonymousreply 452October 26, 2022 9:26 PM

Covid isn't a parasite. Its infuriates to read Dr's and nurses being abused because they aren't prescribed treatment that is not approved to treat a virus.

Ugh I just listened to a podcast with Dr. Peter Hotez, co-director of Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development.and it’s discouraging. There are so many new variants coming through now (plus they’re assigned gibberish names that no one can keep straight). He reckons that everyone over say, 50, should just plan on having a booster every 6 months.

The scary thing is , even keeping up with all the original shots and boosters, there’s only a 50% chance that you can avoid hospitalization now. So if you catch it, immediately take Paxlovid. He was interviewed on the New Abnormal podcast this week.

[quote]COVID 'most likely' leaked from lab, explosive Senate report concludes, as lawmakers say China 'no longer deserves benefit of doubt' over animal transmission theory

A leak wouldn't surprise me at all but this particular "explosive" report was apparently authored by GOP members of the Senate Committee on Health Education, Labor and Pensions, who I wouldn't trust to analyze a lipid panel, let alone the outbreak of a novel coronavirus half a world away.

And I say "apparently" because right now only the Daily Mail is reporting the story.

by Anonymousreply 462October 27, 2022 6:16 PM

"apologies from Twitter"?

What did you that mean?

by Anonymousreply 463October 27, 2022 7:24 PM

R461, I actually believe it was a lab leak and that the response should have been straightforward but Trump’s presidency was tainted by racism and China was not the first or only place to do dangerous research. There were people screaming to nuke China; China did not invent this kind of research. “In 1971 a bioweapons experiment in which aerosolized smallpox was blown out over the Aral Sea went tragically wrong when a young fisheries expert on a boat contracted the illness and spread it to nine other people. Three died, including two young children. The government claimed that the infections had spread naturally from Afghanistan, where pockets of smallpox infection still smoldered. But there were no intervening cases and the whole explanation seemed disingenuous. Only after the fall of the Soviet Union did the Russians admit what had actually happened. And this story, too, has been almost forgotten.“

by Anonymousreply 471October 28, 2022 4:40 AM

Yes r460, I phrased that wrongly. It used to be thought that if you were vaxxed and boostered that you would 100% be able to avoid being hospitalized in the event you got Covid. Now that assurance is down to 50%.

Ok, it was not ever 100% due to co-morbidities but knowing that your case was likely to be mild or at least not life-threatening was comforting and now… (this is for people over 50)

But I know a 9 month old baby who had it, not seriously I’ll and double vaxxed thank god. Remember when we thought kids had some kind of natural immunity against it?

by Anonymousreply 472October 28, 2022 1:59 PM

Nobody is guaranteed a certain amount of time on this earth, some are here longer than others, but everyone will die of one thing or another at some point. So best to make the most of the time you are given. Worrying about Covid is NOT the way to live, otherwise, you might as well be dead.

CDC director tests positive for COVID again

NEW YORK (AP) — The head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tested positive again for COVID-19.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky had mild symptoms Sunday and is isolating at her home in Massachusetts, the CDC said Monday.

Walensky, 53, first tested positive on Oct. 21. She took a course of the antiviral pill Paxlovid, and later tested negative. But the symptoms returned and Walensky is again in isolation, working and holding virtual meetings, the CDC said.

Paxlovid has proven effective at preventing serious disease and death among those at highest risk, including older people and those who are immune compromised. But the pill appears to provide little or no benefit for younger adults. Some who take the drug have experienced a return of symptoms after completing Paxlovid’s five-day regimen of pills.

CDC officials said Walensky is up to date on her vaccines.

Walensky took over the CDC in January 2021. She is one of several U.S. health officials who have gotten COVID-19.
