After months of sitting at home I decided to head back out in the world and started getting sick yesterday. I did a home test in my hotel room and it came back positive. I have had five injections so haven't been irresponsible. It sucks. Worse is being away from friends who would have been able to help me out if I were home.
Mr Covid finally found me

Were you wearing a mask?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | October 1, 2022 10:56 AM |
Sorry to hear that, OP. Being sick while far from home is the worst. I hope at least yours is a very mild case.

by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 1, 2022 11:00 AM |
Yes, I had been careful with the mask but had to take it off on the plane in order to eat. It was a long flight. I suspect that is when I caught it. If this is mild covid I do wonder what the other variety is like. My legs and lower back hurt so much I can barely stand up. Anyway, season 3 of Ramy dropped yesterday so maybe that will distract me.

I got it over Labor Day, hacking cough that brought up blood. Took Paxlovid, and after 4 days felt a lot better. I guess I had pneumonia, because my breathing got better. This stuff is real. Feel better OP.

Is it worth taking Paxlovid? People say it lessons the symptoms quickly but then a week later they all come back

by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 1, 2022 1:53 PM |
If you were able to get five injections, then I'm guessing you must have an autoimmune condition because the rest of us have had only four.
And if your immune system is that compromised, why are you away at some hotel in the first place?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 1, 2022 2:02 PM |
R11 here, Paxlovid worked wonders for me. The congestion and bad cough were gone in a week. I slept in a chair the lst few nights, it was painful to sleep on my back or right side those first few days. I was told to only go to the ER if I couldn't breathe(!) - that almost happened, as I think I had a panic attack, but I talked myself out of it.

Comfort and convalescing, OP. Get well soon.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 1, 2022 2:05 PM |
I got my fifth shot yesterday. Why are you doubting OP?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 1, 2022 2:06 PM |
Second booster was given to anyone over fifty who wanted it. The new, omicron specific booster is the third booster. Five shots is totally feasible.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 1, 2022 2:19 PM |
Op here. I had my 5th injection about two weeks ago at Costco. It may be an age thing. I am over 65. I was given an antiviral today so hopefully it will work. I am surprised by the severe lower back pain. It is hard even to sit up.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 1, 2022 2:25 PM |
Keep in mind that Covid is constantly mutating and these mutations rapidly circulate all over the world. And these mutations currently are much easier to catch than the previous ones. So things you were doing that were perfectly safe earlier this year could get you a big old viral load right now.
The vaccine doesn't make you immune to Covid, but it does make it far less likely that if you do catch it you won't get as sick. Given that this is a virus that works by shredding your lungs and causing collateral damage in your brain, circulatory system, and other vital parts of your body, that's a HUGE benefit.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 1, 2022 2:32 PM |
Sorry to hear, feel better soon.
The back pain is interesting. My sister wound up with a ruptured disc, and COVID was the only factor during that time period. (doctors kept asking her if she'd been in a car accident)
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 1, 2022 2:44 PM |
R15 The rest of us have not all had four, so speak for yourself. I had ONE J&J shot last year and no Covid to date. Looks like I made the correct choice of vaccines, and I'm in my 50s and have an autoimmune disorder. You paranoid types can get all the boosters you like, but since they were not designed for the strains of the virus currently out there you might as well be injecting sterile water.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 1, 2022 2:44 PM |
Actually the new boosters are targeted at current strains, r23.

I had my 5th Moderna on Wednesday. This one was a little harder than the second and two boosters. It was similar to the initial vaccination and took about 48 hours to feel better. All low-grade stuff but it all added up and made me useless on Thursday. I slowly started to feel better on Friday and am back to normal today.

R23 - I had four Pfizer shots and have had no covid to date either.
And I eat at restaurants, go to movie theaters, have gone to see several Broadway shows and NJSO concerts, and saw a comic at MSG.
So it looks like I made the correct choice as well.

I had one booster shot but was waiting for the latest one to come out before I caught Covid on a cruise ship, which is one giant Petrie dish. Luckily I started feeling sick on the last day. The second night was the worst, I felt chills that were so bad I couldn’t get out of bed. Worst I’ve felt in years. But by the third day I was feeling like it was just a crappy cold. And luckily, no real cough or congestion in the lungs. Just a sore throat and nasal congestion. The weird thing is I tested positive for nearly two weeks after, but felt fine. I’m sure the vaccine helped keep the virus out of my lungs.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 1, 2022 4:20 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 1, 2022 4:22 PM |
"Bet you thought that monkeypox vaccine you got was going to protect you too. "
The monkeypox vaccine is more effective after the 1st shot than any of the covid OR flu vaccines.
Anyway I got my 5th last week. I guess I'm used to feeling like a pin cushion at this pointy but I felt nothing going in and zero side effects. (Pfizer)
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 1, 2022 4:26 PM |
R29 Glad to hear it, but my choice was just as effective and only took about a half hour on one day, including walking there and back and the 15 minutes they make you wait after the shot. You went four separate times and I'll bet you drove far away and stood in line for a long while for at least one of them.

Great tip about the women's club. I wonder if the would whip me up some vegetarian chicken soup. I am in a hotel which is having a soft reopening and the restaurants are closed. To add to that misery the hotel doesn't allow Uber eats or Grab eats as it's called here. I think they would make an exception if I told them I had Covid but I am sort of worried they would kick me out of the hotel if they knew I was sick.

R51--You could probably get it at any Walgreen's or CVS. They seem to be advertising. My local health system's clinics don't have it yet either but the chain pharmacies certainly do.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | October 1, 2022 7:28 PM |
R54 But I'm not paranoid or in any rush. I have, however, recently started taking Cosentyx and will speak to my PCP in 2 weeks when I'm there for my first Shingrix vax and this year's flu shot to see when it might be appropriate. Some drugs should not be administered within a certain time frame of taking other drugs.

by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 1, 2022 7:57 PM |
R57 Because I don't care enough and think it is highly unlikely that I am in a high-risk group for it. They have the newest Pfizer at KP and I might get it if the doctor thinks I should.

Time to remind people (again) that vaccines do not prevent you from being infected by viruses.
Vaccines are not tiny orbiting laser batteries that zap the virus before it can get into your system.
Vaccines teach your body how to fight the virus. You’ll still get infected but you’re vastly less likely to get seriously ill or die.

I just got my omicron booster an hour ago (fifth shot after the double Pfizer vaccine and two Moderna boosters). I fully expect to be bedridden for most of tomorrow, but hope the side effects clear up by Monday. Will drinking lots of water help?
The pharmacist who gave me the shot told me that covid is rampant in my area, worse than ever (I hope he was exaggerating), but all that is invisible because cases aren't being formally tested and recorded. He was judging from the number of scripts (for Paxlovid) that he's been getting.

Favipiravir, sold under the brand name Avigan among others,[3] is an antiviral medication used to treat influenza in Japan.[4] It is also being studied to treat a number of other viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2.[4] Like the experimental antiviral drugs T-1105 and T-1106, it is a pyrazinecarboxamide derivative.[5]
It is being developed and manufactured by Toyama Chemical (a subsidiary of Fujifilm) and was approved for medical use in Japan in 2014.[6] In 2016, Fujifilm licensed it to Zhejiang Hisun Pharmaceutical Co.[7] It became a generic drug in 2019.[citation needed]

I expected the doctor to give some guidance. I told her I wanted to take antivirals. She then asked me which one I wanted. I asked her what she would recommend and she again asked me which one I wanted. This happened three times. I saw a pricelist on her wall and asked her what was best. She never said. I would have been better off being my own doctor and going to a pharmacy after doing some research. I know nothing about antivirals in Thailand.

with a buttload of stress, anxiety and panic. I've been afraid of needles since a teen. I was 50 when I had surgery. I had to have numerous needles. To top it off, I have thick skin (not the emotional kind...I wish but like walrus skin) so my veins are hard to find. Finding a vein is like finding a needle in a haystack. Ok Matt-fatso so you have no concern whatsoever about Islamic terrorism, or let’s say crimes committed by illegal aliens. And in fact you don’t care about those things at all.
Because the deaths caused by covid are VASTLY greater in numbers than either of those — hundreds of thousands of times higher in fact. And you’re just shrugging the million dead people off.
So you need to shut up about the dangers of Islamic terrorism and illegal alien crime. Right?

OP I am very sorry to hear this. Do not wait for whatever ladies organization to call - do what R109 tells and call the Embassy asap. They will be able to guide you. I used to have horrendous sore throat due to a health condition when I was young and cannot imagine how you feel. COVID is no joke and most ppl I know are experiencing a few days of horror but they get better and fully recover.
Please keep us posted, we can’t help you there but we can keep you company and send prayers your way. Be well.

Sending you love.

Both my partner and I got our omicron specific booster about 4 days ago at RiteAid. Same day scheduled too. So that makes 5 shots so far. Not to mention flu shot and 2 monkypox shots. So OP's story is totally believable. Tired of felling like a pin cushion, but I guess it's better than the alternative. So far never of us has gotten "Mr. Covid". And we get out, went to a Gaga Concert in Dodger Stadium a few weeks ago and I guess the vaccines worked. No Covid.

I mentioned above that I had Covid a month ago, and while it did feel like a bad cold, at its worst (lasted one night) I felt truly as worse as I’ve felt in years—probably since I was a kid. I had uncontrollable chills and a fever. I could not get out of bed and walk three feet for Advil. But I didn’t have breathing or coughing problems and I recovered pretty quickly. And I have no issues with long Covid now (so far). A friend unfortunately got it before the vaccine and had a terrible time with coughing and scarily a bit with breathing. He also has long Covid issues—headaches and stomach aches he did not have before.
I am triple vaxxed and getting my booster soon. I am absolutely sure that if I were not vaxxed, it would have been much worse.

OP here from one of his many naps. I completely screwed up my meds. I was supposed to take 12 pills twice a day but instead took one. How was this possible. So I am way behind on my antivirals. I did call the embassy and they said they would call twice a day to check on me. The school I was to attend arranged a delivery from 7 eleven so I have water, juice and cups of noodles plus some animal products I will not eat. The embassy said they could arrange a caregiving. After I screwed up the meds I think I do need some help so will say yes in the morning . I tried to watch interview with the vampire but fell asleep a few minutes in. In the future if I do a long flight I will skip the meals and fast for 12 hours. That or break the trip in Honolulu and Tokyo. Thanks for the ideas. This really sucks.

I finally got COVID as well. It was inevitable as I work in an elementary school. I thought it was a bad cold at first, then possibly pneumonia because of the cough. Then I went and tested positive for COVID.
I got hives from the antibiotics they gave me for my bronchial symptoms but I think I’m feeling better. I haven’t lost my sense of smell or taste but do feel very drained and lethargic. I was actually craving some Thai lemongrass soup.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | October 3, 2022 3:20 PM |
R117, a couple of friends had Covid up until last week. There was a lot of coughing and shortness of breath and a lot of sleeping. They were exhausted all the time and this went on for at least a couple of weeks. They’re both testing negative now and still sleep a lot. An hour on, an hour off. Every time they leave the house they have to sleep when they get home. If you can get a pulse oximeter, get one, one friend with pre-existing conditions really had her oxygen level drop. The healthier one was better. Both had every booster available except the new Omnicron. They went on a cruise.
For R55, I think it was, I just had the newest Omnicron vaccine and the flu shot on the same day. One in each arm. My arm was a little sore in the flu shot arm, very sore in the Covid vax arm for several days. They told me at the pharmacy to drink lots of water and move that arm around a lot, which is supposed to lessen the discomfort. I was not able to do either because I had to drive, and my arm was pretty sore for several days. I also had a bruise in the Covid arm around the puncture point. That’s never happened to me before with a vaccine.
I did ask the pharmacist if it was okay to do both Covid and flu shots at the same time, she said it was fine, so I did both. I’d rather get it over with. Other than arm soreness, no other problems.

They are saying that does not happen now with the new variant. And if you got it in the last month or two it's 90% chance or higher it's the Omnicron version.

R122, R121 here. My friend with pre-existing conditions did lose her sense of smell for about a week or a week and a half. That was probably the newest variant. It was either the last week of August or the first week or so of September ‘22.

I understand people who have a phobia for needles and resist vaccination.
I understand people who are paranoid about vaccines that appeared "out of nowhere" with perceived minimal testing.
But Maga goes further than resist vaccination, maga denies the existence of a public health threat.
Why?
Maga won't wear a mask when required. There's no risk to wearing a face mask.
Maga doesn't observe social distancing. They can't respect the personal space of others even while screeching MYBODYMYCHOICE.
Maga, mostly un or undereducated types threatens and mocks researchers and doctors who devoted their professional lives to the study of virus and epidemics.
What is the end game?
Is the end game reducing the United States to permanent shithole status?

What happens when we boost with a bivalent vaccine? Our immune memory expands AND is better equipped to handle current variants by updating our repertoire of antibodies! Our immune systems make NEW B-cell responses to Omicron EVEN IF previously immunized with “classic spike.”

I went to my medium-sized local Kaiser to get a flu shot and the third Omicron-specific booster. Flu shots were being given away in the lobby, no problem, but the nurse said there is only ONE Kaiser in my area — a 30-minute drive away — that was administering the shot.
Went to Costco and they had plenty of all the shots. In and out (and you don't have to be a member to use the pharmacy).

In the late 2010s, researchers found that increases in Russian disinformation activity on Twitter were correlated with increases in polarising conversations regarding the Black Lives Matter movement.
One such activity included Russian accounts mimicking Black Lives Matter activists, or supported issues central to the Black Lives Matter cause.
Activities on Facebook include purchasing ads to promote Black Lives Matter.
Reporting by investigative journalists uncovered Russian links with Facebook pages promoting Black Lives Matter.
In one instance, Russian activities on social media led to real-life protests on behalf of Black Lives Matter.
Prior to this development, in 2010, a report commissioned for the United States Senate Intelligence Committee, the Russian firm Internet Research Agency was identified as creating social media accounts as part of a complex campaign to suppress the black American vote. However, subsequently, investigative journalists found that the Russian firm sought to promote the issue of Black Lives Matter in order to instigate mistrust in US law enforcement and political institutions

Facts, inflammatory opinions, and outright falsehoods are all components of a successful disinformation playbook.
In their typology of IRA Twitter accounts, Linvill and Warren (2018) separate political users on the left and right from so-called “Fearmongers” whose main purpose is to spread fabricated news stories.
Our results reveal that political IRA users also trafficked in falsehoods alongside factual content and extreme opinions. While previous research has noted this tendency (Howard et al., 2018), we find false content among the ranks of the most widely-discussed tweets, especially on the right. The IRA’s strategy of posting about nonexistent events can only be successful if authentic users engage with and spread such content at scale. This opens the possibility that it may have had some degree of political impact.

This is just a mystifying disease. I know a straight couple, he's a marathon runner, thin as a rail, she's probably 40 pounds overweight and sedentary. He had a hell of a time with covid and is still not able to run, five months later. She got it and had no symptoms whatsoever.

An interesting video about the history of 7/11 in Japan revealed Japanese investors purchased the rights to operate the chain in Japan by grifters who only sold them the brandname for an obscene amount of money. The rights to operate 7/11 equipment and even the instructions how to use the equipment were sold separately and piece by piece very expensively.
Ultimately, Japanese investors figured out how to operate the chain so successfully that when the American chain experienced an economic downturn, they were bailed out by their Japanese investors.

A new Covid-19 wave appears to be brewing in Europe as cooler weather arrives, with public health experts warning that vaccine fatigue and confusion over types of shots available will likely limit booster uptake.
Omicron subvariants BA.4/5 that dominated this summer are still behind the majority of infections, but newer Omicron subvariants are gaining ground. Hundreds of new forms of Omicron are being tracked by scientists, World Health Organization (WHO) officials said this week.
Cases in the European Union reached 1.5 million last week, up 8% from the prior week, despite a dramatic fall in testing. In the week ending October 4, Covid-19 hospital admissions with symptoms jumped nearly 32% in Italy, while intensive care admissions rose about 21%, compared to the week before.
Over the same week, Covid hospitalizations in Britain saw a 45% increase versus the week earlier.

If every American 50 and above with Covid received a course of either Paxlovid or a treatment known as monoclonal antibodies, daily deaths might fall to about 50 per day." Paxlovid is free. If you know someone in this bracket, make sure they get it:
by Anonymous | reply 224 | October 7, 2022 6:14 PM |
Paxlovid helps patients recover from severe illness.
Paxlovid doesn't prevent infection.
Paxlovid is not a cure, there are no cures for the infection yet.
Vaccines help prevent injury and death from the infection.
Vaccines do not provide immunity from the infection.
Previous exposure to the infection doesn't provide immunity, people report being infected multiple times.
Covid is being identified as an infection that harms the vascular system.

A friend in her 40s, and another in his 70s, experience recurrent spells of extreme dizziness, their hearts pounding in their chests when they stand. A 21-year-old student with no prior medical history is admitted to the ICU with heart failure, while a 48-year-old avid tennis player, previously healthy, suddenly suffers a heart attack. A relative is diagnosed with pericarditis, an inflammation of the protective sac surrounding the heart.
I can’t confirm the exact etiology of all these cases. But every one of the people I mentioned had a history of COVID either days or months beforehand–and all of them experienced only mild cases of infection at the time."

With the new wave of coronavirus infections already on its way, the Swiss government has recommended that masks be worn in crowded indoor venues, including on public transport and in stores — places and situations that are most conducive to contamination.
“Along with vaccination, individual behaviour is also important to protect yourself and others”, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) said in a statement on Thursday.
While a mask mandate is not expected to be implemented, “individual responsibility is gaining in importance”,

I got Covid about sept 1. It wasn't severe at all. I had the J&J vaccine and two Moderna boosters. I had an occasional cough, but no breathing problems. I had a slight fever but only 1oo one time and then 99. I got diarrhea which has been reported with those who had been vaccinated. Imodium stopped that. My dr gave me Paxlovid and after the 5 days, the test was only slightly pink. A few days later I again felt feverish and was back at 99. I retested and it was bright pink. I rebounded. I had about 24 hours where I stuffed up and sneezed a lot. After about 4 days I tested negative and it was over. I should now have natural immunity until the virus mutates significantly. I saw a recommendation to take the new booster if you have had the virus after about 2 months, which I will do. Over all it was no worse than a bad cold or mild flu.

Three vaccines for the prevention of COVID-19 are currently authorised for use in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
According to the vaccination recommendation of the FOPH/NITAG vaccination recommendation, to have full vaccine protection, two doses of the Moderna vaccine (Spikevax®) or Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine (Comirnaty®) are required, or one dose following a documented recent SARS-CoV-2 infection. For Johnson & Johnson (Covid-19 Vaccine Janssen®), a single dose of vaccine is required to be deemed fully vaccinated.
Those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but who have not yet had a booster vaccination are still deemed to be fully vaccinated.
The efficacy of the vaccines available in Switzerland is very high.
They provide effective protection against symptomatic infection, in particular severe forms of the disease, and they reduce the risk of transmission.
However, this does not mean that those who are fully vaccinated (with or without a booster vaccination) cannot become infected, as no vaccine provides 100% protection

From the "people are scum" files:
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 40% of Americans were untruthful about whether they had the virus or were ignoring safety precautions.
Folks ignored quarantine rules, told someone they were about to see that they had been taking more precautions than they actually were, and didn't mention they might or did have COVID-19 when they entered a doctor's office. They were also untruthful about vaccination status, claiming they were vaccinated when they weren't or that they were unvaccinated when they had taken the jab.

It's definitely on the upswing again in NYC. The current case I have is milder than when I had it in May 2022. Definitely more of a cold - potentially because I had the omicron booster a few weeks ago. Was quite sick in May.

While long COVID’s impact on people is still being critically studied, new research found that the virus may increase the risk of developing memory problems and even Alzheimer’s in the year after initial infection.
“It’s really sobering,” says epidemiologist and researcher on the study Ziyad Al-Aly in an interview with WBUR. “COVID-19 is really not as benign as some people think it is.”

In many ways it is the best place to be in regards to Covid. 99 per cent of the locals wear a mask even when walking on the sidewalk. They did a better job managing the disease when it was still terrible to catch it. There was no resistance to mask wearing and taking the vaccine. I wish I had been here for the dark days of Covid. It was never made a political issue like in the USA. In many ways the USA is the ultimate shit hole.

I finally got Covid after being extremely careful for two and half years last month, likely from the supermarket. I had one day where I felt like total 💩, but after that I recovered, though it took over a week before most of the symptoms went away. The only really annoying part is I have long Covid in the form of muscle weakness in my knees and have needed to wear a knee support sleeve for the last several weeks, since it has become hard to bend and walk long distances without it. Not fun.

I was doubly vaxxed and boosted and still caught COVID after a visit to the dentist's in July. I took Paxlovid right away (which gives you a terrible taste in your mouth) and wasn't any sicker than with a cold though a sore throat and cough dragged on for a month.

Long Covid will cost the world a lot of money.
Not only are long Covid symptoms being experienced by a huge number of people, but the condition also affects younger people who will suffer from the condition through several decades of life – including later years when other illnesses could compound the illness. It’s tough to estimate the worldwide cost long Covid will have. But in the US alone, the condition will cost the economy about $2.6tn, according to Harvard researchers – about a tenth of the annual US GDP.

I think I have COVID. Paging Elderlez- what are you seeing out there?! I woke up with body/muscle aches that developed as the morning went on, a fever (99.9 - normal is 97.8). I have been feeling a little stiff all week, but I work out every day. I cycled and swam yesterday so at first I thought I was just sore. I had a massage on Wed so I shouldn't be that sore. Then it got much worse where I didn't want to move, than the feeling of chills coming on.
I took an Oxycodone 30 minutes ago from when I had my wisdom teeth taken out. 20 minutes ago I would not have been able to move, but I feel much better. I am starving right now as well. I don't have sore throat or cough, but did have a runny nose last night and this morning, but runny noses aren't uncommon for me due to allergies. Covid or the flu? I can't leave my place right now to get a test. This is my first potential go around w/ Covid. I might have had the the OG version in Dec 19/Jan 2020, but I'll never know for sure.
Did anyone else have muscle aches - like very tight legs especially? This is how I usually feel when I have had the flu in the past.

If that is playing “Russian roulette,” then so be it. Covid isn’t going anywhere. This is our new reality. I stayed on lockdown in NYC for 2020 and most of 2021 and things got very, very dark mental health wise. I’ve been vaccinated with Moderna and boosted twice and I wear a mask indoors in stores and on public transit, but I can’t totally isolate myself again. Boston University CREATES a new Covid strain that has an 80% kill rate — echoing dangerous experiments feared to have started pandemic
US researchers have developed a new lethal Covid strain in a laboratory – echoing the type of experiments many fear started the pandemic.
The mutant variant — which is a hybrid of Omicron and the original Wuhan virus — killed 80 percent of mice infected with it at Boston University.
When a similar group of rodents were exposed to the standard Omicron strain, however, they all survived and only experienced 'mild' symptoms.
The scientists also infected human cells with the hybrid variant and found it was five times more infectious than Omicron. This suggests the man-made virus might be the most contagious form yet.
It will no doubt surprise many Americans that such experiments continue to go on in the US despite concerns similar studies may have led to the global Covid outbreak.
Covid first began spreading from a wet market in Wuhan, China, about eight miles from a similar high-security virology laboratory that manipulated bat coronaviruses.
Chinese scientists were found to have wiped crucial databases and stifled independent investigations into the facility's links to the pandemic.

'Most vaccine-resistant Covid strain ever' sends case numbers soaring in Singapore and is already in the US — but it's 'killing just TWO people per day'
A new Covid variant that is feared to be the 'most vaccine-resistant yet' has sent case numbers soaring in Singapore — and it is already in the US.
The mutant strain — dubbed XBB — is another spin-off of the Omicron variant and has been blamed for Singapore's infection numbers doubling in the past fortnight.
It has accumulated mutations in its receptor binding domain, a key part of the spike protein where virus-fighting antibodies dock and block infections.

By Monday afternoon, my fever broke. It was at its worst for 2.5 days. Last night was my first really good night of sleep. I didn't take any antivirals or medications besides advil, but definitely if the fever and the worst of the symptoms had lasted more than 3-4 days, I would have been on the phone to my MD to get them.
I travelled during omicron through multiple countries, go out, ride public transportation and have been fine. I know what did me in. Increase in NYC covid rates comes as two new COVID-19 variants that quietly emerged on the scene over the last few weeks -- ones that Dr. Anthony Fauci has described as "pretty troublesome" -- are becoming increasingly prevalent in the New York area and stoking fresh concerns as the nation braces for yet another potential winter surge.

Absolutely spiking in NYC but much milder hopefully. Seems more like a seasonal cold anecdotally based on coworkers and friends who have it now (and my experience). Annoying that the omicron booster doesn’t seem to be doing shit to prevent it but if the shot makes your symptoms more mild, then so be it.
It’s so contagious though that it’s hard to avoid unless you are somehow immune (which some people weirdly seem to be) or stay masked whenever indoors.
It’s absolutely never-ending.

Yes, fewer than 5% of eligible Americans have gotten the booster. Not good news as we enter the cold and flu season.
if we continue on this route, the US could be in for a tough winter, says Waleed Javaid, MD, hospital epidemiologist and director of infection prevention and control at Mount Sinai Downtown in New York City. Specifically, if a lot of people get sick at the same time, we could see disruptions in health care settings again, Dr. Javaid says.
“This year, the indications are that the flu could be much worse than last year,” he says. “Hospital overcrowding can occur for a variety of reasons—COVID, flu, or both—and we don’t want to see that.”

SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted by exposure to infectious respiratory fluids
The principal mode by which people are infected with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) is through exposure to respiratory fluids carrying infectious virus.
Exposure occurs in three principal ways:
(1) inhalation of very fine respiratory droplets and aerosol particles,
(2) deposition of respiratory droplets and particles on exposed mucous membranes in the mouth, nose, or eye by direct splashes and sprays, and
(3) touching mucous membranes with hands that have been soiled either directly by virus-containing respiratory fluids or indirectly by touching surfaces with virus on them.
People release respiratory fluids during exhalation (e.g., quiet breathing, speaking, singing, exercise, coughing, sneezing) in the form of droplets across a spectrum of sizes.1-9 These droplets carry virus and transmit infection.
The largest droplets settle out of the air rapidly, within seconds to minutes.
The smallest very fine droplets, and aerosol particles formed when these fine droplets rapidly dry, are small enough that they can remain suspended in the air for minutes to hours.

The arm that took the shot isn’t very sore; only if I press on the injection site. I didn’t want to take another shot, but my physician urged me due to me having a high-risk category.
I’ve never had Covid as far as I know. I got tested a few times when feeling poorly. I was generally careful, using masks, and limited my traveling to essential endeavors.

R438, I keep reading that ivermectin is a veterinary medicine, but I assume people haven't researched it and are just repeating what they see on Twitter, because it's also a human medicine. Wikipedia:
[quote]Approved for human use in 1987, today it is used to treat infestations including head lice, scabies, river blindness (onchocerciasis), strongyloidiasis, trichuriasis, ascariasis and lymphatic filariasis. It works through many mechanisms to kill the targeted parasites, and can be taken orally, or applied to the skin for external infestations.
[quote]William Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for its discovery and applications. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
I'm not suggesting anyone use an antiparasitic for Covid. I'm just always puzzled when people say it's "horse paste." It does exist as horse paste, and sheep dewormer, but it is also widely used to fight parasites in human beings.

Ugh I just listened to a podcast with Dr. Peter Hotez, co-director of Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development.and it’s discouraging. There are so many new variants coming through now (plus they’re assigned gibberish names that no one can keep straight). He reckons that everyone over say, 50, should just plan on having a booster every 6 months.
The scary thing is , even keeping up with all the original shots and boosters, there’s only a 50% chance that you can avoid hospitalization now. So if you catch it, immediately take Paxlovid. He was interviewed on the New Abnormal podcast this week.

A leak wouldn't surprise me at all but this particular "explosive" report was apparently authored by GOP members of the Senate Committee on Health Education, Labor and Pensions, who I wouldn't trust to analyze a lipid panel, let alone the outbreak of a novel coronavirus half a world away.
And I say "apparently" because right now only the Daily Mail is reporting the story.

by Anonymous | reply 463 | October 27, 2022 7:24 PM |
R461, I actually believe it was a lab leak and that the response should have been straightforward but Trump’s presidency was tainted by racism and China was not the first or only place to do dangerous research. There were people screaming to nuke China; China did not invent this kind of research. “In 1971 a bioweapons experiment in which aerosolized smallpox was blown out over the Aral Sea went tragically wrong when a young fisheries expert on a boat contracted the illness and spread it to nine other people. Three died, including two young children. The government claimed that the infections had spread naturally from Afghanistan, where pockets of smallpox infection still smoldered. But there were no intervening cases and the whole explanation seemed disingenuous. Only after the fall of the Soviet Union did the Russians admit what had actually happened. And this story, too, has been almost forgotten.“

Ok, it was not ever 100% due to co-morbidities but knowing that your case was likely to be mild or at least not life-threatening was comforting and now… (this is for people over 50)
But I know a 9 month old baby who had it, not seriously I’ll and double vaxxed thank god. Remember when we thought kids had some kind of natural immunity against it?

CDC director tests positive for COVID again
NEW YORK (AP) — The head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tested positive again for COVID-19.
Dr. Rochelle Walensky had mild symptoms Sunday and is isolating at her home in Massachusetts, the CDC said Monday.
Walensky, 53, first tested positive on Oct. 21. She took a course of the antiviral pill Paxlovid, and later tested negative. But the symptoms returned and Walensky is again in isolation, working and holding virtual meetings, the CDC said.
Paxlovid has proven effective at preventing serious disease and death among those at highest risk, including older people and those who are immune compromised. But the pill appears to provide little or no benefit for younger adults. Some who take the drug have experienced a return of symptoms after completing Paxlovid’s five-day regimen of pills.
CDC officials said Walensky is up to date on her vaccines.
Walensky took over the CDC in January 2021. She is one of several U.S. health officials who have gotten COVID-19.
