I’m at JFK. Half of the stores (cafes, duty free) are Locked up. No staff? LGA doesn’t seem to have this issue.
Are airport stores and cafes open where you are?

There is certainly an increase of shuttered vendor spaces but I’d hardly call it half.

Conversely I was in the airport the other day and was wondering why there were so many retail shops. They seem completely dead. Who wants to make a major purchase like clothing or a handbag at the airport?

OP I condole you. I fly through JFK for work quite frequently and am embarrassed at what an abandoned disaster site it is (especially Terminal 8). Flying on JetBlue? Terminal 5 is all open, thankfully so because its facilities still can’t keep up with the overtaxing passenger loads JB is funneling through, but those venues are still woefully understaffed.
I was excited to finally visit the TWA Hotel and while I enjoyed the beautiful rooms and entrances, the restaurant was filthy and the lounge and lobby areas were filled with non-guests… people on stopovers just squatting in chairs, loungers and greedily hogging electrical outlets.
I remember when JFK went through quite the makeover in the early 00’s, and hopeful it would be a classier place. Now I’m just disappointed and angry. Delta’s decision to tear down the historical Eastern terminal was another tremendous disappointment.

Too bad about the TWA hotel. I stayed a few times when it opened and it was great.

What terminal? I was at JFK T5 yesterday. It was packed and every single store and restaurant was open and thriving.

Yeah who the hell says “I was at JFK” but doesn’t mention the terminal. Freak.

R6 is a cab driver, angry that the tourists he takes to the airport don't know which terminal from which they're departing.
OR it could be me, pissed off at travelers blocking the exits of the AirTrain, clueless that others may need to get off at a terminal different than theirs.

Terminal 8. Both the main entry way have a few shops still closed and when you get into the larger area after you cross under a lot of shops (Abitinos, Duty Free, etc.) are still closed.
Also there are barely any cabs at JFK, at least at Terminal 8, anymore. You used to be able to get a cab easily. Now it is mainly Ubers, and they have jacked up their prices to be twice that of yellow cabs.

The Port Authority couldn’t wait to dump the nasty old Pan Am building —post 9/11 it was unusable.
Terminal 1 …now the second oldest, will be demolished soon and ful replaced. Same for Terminal 7, but that’s already in process. 7 years from now, JFK will have replaced every single pre-2000 terminal.
It’s a breeze via the E train or LIRR to the air train. One hour (or less) door to door from 34th street/either route.

Um— JFK is the easiest place to “find” a cab in NYC. There’s also an app for that. You know that. But why do it? The air train/etc. is much less expensive and faster.

JFK may be the easiest, but that still doesn't mean there are cabs. I go back to NYC every other week. I didn't ride the subway even when I lived in NYC, I'm certainly not getting on that shit express now.

R11. You’re silly…and you’re mistaken on both counts.
