Well done, AMC!

G'Day Sammy... love ya. Another Aussie boy on the world stage xx

It’s not really a gay scene when there’s a cunt in the middle.

by Anonymousreply 2September 30, 2022 11:36 AM

Some of you fags will watch interview with the vampire but aren’t ever getting INTER a woman or VIEWing a pair of tits😔we just wanted to make sure you knew

Neither one fucks her and she even says that when Louis rents her they only talk.

I don't find the actor attractive, the elf from the lord of therings show should have been cast instead.

by Anonymousreply 7September 30, 2022 7:31 PM

Jacob Anderson is no Brad Pitt, who was beautiful.

I want to see WHITE men.

Usually, when they race swap a character, it’s a sign that the end product is going to suck.

by Anonymousreply 10September 30, 2022 8:48 PM

I don't watch TV at all, so I'm not in a position to claim I agree with r10, but I've seen that argument before and made by people who are not bigots. By leaning heavily on diversity, studios benefit from: 1 - gratuitous exposure from the racist backlash provoked by the casting choice; 2 - gaining a highly committed and loud group of defenders who see as their mission to counter racist trolls without even being paid for their work; and 3 - gentler reviews, as professional critics will take their time to praise "brave" actors and producers even if the review remains overall negative.

by Anonymousreply 11September 30, 2022 8:59 PM

I don't mind race swapping with comic book or legacy characters or Shakespeare or Broadway. But in written books that have an established lore especially like that of Anne Rice who was fiercely protective of her intellectual property. And with Vampire Chronicles which does draw heavily from real history including the unfortunate aspect of American chattel slavery. To race swap or age swap seems disrespectful to the source material.

by Anonymousreply 12September 30, 2022 9:07 PM

I hate that blog with a passion. Just post the video.

by Anonymousreply 13September 30, 2022 9:34 PM

Surprisingly, this is getting good reviews. Some people on Twitter are claiming they've seen the first episode and that it's very good. On traditional media reviews are good, too. Maybe this is not surprising. Sam Reid's career seems to be on the rise in his birth country Australia. He probably wouldn't take a moment to come to American and film this if it wasn't half decent.

Theyre doing the Witching Hour also...they better not fuck it up. Thats my favorite Rice novel.

by Anonymousreply 15October 1, 2022 12:29 AM

They've race-swapped, century-swapped, country-swapped, age-swapped...why did they adapt this book in the first place?

by Anonymousreply 16October 1, 2022 2:27 AM

I've had my doubts about this (even worked on it a bit), and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. AMC+ has already ordered the 2nd season.

r16- they need a new franchise to take over Walking Dead- they plan to do all 10 Vampire books. They're doing Mayfair Witches as we speak, which is odd, as it's not in the sequential order of her books.

by Anonymousreply 17October 1, 2022 2:41 AM

The point is, R17, why adapt the books if you're going to change so much? I mean, I already know the answer. But it's annoying.

by Anonymousreply 18October 1, 2022 5:54 AM

Yea, because vampires can only be white—it is canon.

🤔😵‍💫

by Anonymousreply 19October 1, 2022 6:05 AM

I'm an old-school Vampire Chronicles fan, and I love it. If you can accept the changes, it's really good. Not only does it capture the mood of the books very well, both Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid are killing it. The chemistry of them is excellent.

I'm definitely hooked.

by Anonymousreply 20October 1, 2022 9:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 21October 1, 2022 9:11 AM

Are either of these guys gay?

Anyway, they're both hawt!

by Anonymousreply 22October 1, 2022 9:18 AM

R10 I watched the first episode and it was very good actually. The actors have great chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 23October 1, 2022 9:30 AM

R16 Watch it before judging it. The first episode is actually good.

by Anonymousreply 24October 1, 2022 9:31 AM

R22 Are you talking about the actors or characters? Have no idea about the actors but the characters are at least bi if not gay.

by Anonymousreply 25October 1, 2022 9:38 AM

Jacob Anderson is hot

by Anonymousreply 26October 1, 2022 9:40 AM

R22, Sam Reid is straight. He played a bi/gay character in the Australian series 'The Newsreader'.

by Anonymousreply 27October 1, 2022 10:59 AM

Didn’t realize it was already out. Will definitely watch as I loved the first few books in Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. Gave up on it eventually.

I have read The Witching Hour three times. It’s excellent. I love the middle part that really delves into the history of the Mayfair witches.

When it came out, I pictured Michelle Pfeiffer as Rowan, the lead. Alexandra Daddario has been cast as Rowan in the tv version, called The Mayfair Witches. I’m okay with that.

by Anonymousreply 28October 1, 2022 11:27 AM

R27 Sam IS GAY. There's a 2014 thread on Datalounge where someone claimed to have met him and his boyfriend. Apparently, the poster was working in a behind the camera job for a show where Sam was playing a character. And even his fan girls on Twitter don't put much stock on the possibility that he might be straight.

by Anonymousreply 29October 1, 2022 2:03 PM

Turning Louis black actually plays well into the history of New Orleans.

And before y'all complain about Claudia (apparently the actress was terrible in front and behind the camera, so they made sure she won't be in future seasons), there were 3 factors that influenced her age:

1. It was filmed when kids weren't approved for the vaccine.

2 They did 6 months of nights, which young kids can't do.

3 I believe the actress is 16-18 (playing 14), which allows her to work more hours than a child (kids can only work 8 hours, and part of that involves on set schooling, which disrupts shooting.

by Anonymousreply 30October 1, 2022 2:37 PM

This show seems to be a big hit on social media, especially twitter. It has that hype that other gay shows (like the QAF reboot) have been missing. I know it has already been renewed, so that's good news. The first episode was really good and I can't wait to see more.

by Anonymousreply 31October 1, 2022 7:15 PM

It shouldn’t be described as a “gay show.”

by Anonymousreply 32October 1, 2022 8:20 PM

Too bad Billy Eichner didn’t think to make his rom com in NOLA, with a local mis en scene—he would have had a big hit!

by Anonymousreply 33October 1, 2022 9:47 PM

R32 You're right. My point is just that many shows with prominent gay characters have been cancelled lately. I'm glad that's not the case with this show. The reviews have actually been good and it's a big hit on social media.

by Anonymousreply 34October 2, 2022 11:20 AM

I loved it. It was great seeing Rae Dawn Chong as Louis’s mother.

by Anonymousreply 35October 3, 2022 3:29 AM

I’m sorry, but the actor playing Louis is NO Brad Pitt.

As a matter of fact, is there any black equivalent of Brad Pitt?

by Anonymousreply 36October 3, 2022 3:35 AM

I’m much more attracted to Jacob Anderson. He has swag and modern style

by Anonymousreply 37October 3, 2022 3:40 AM

I had doubts but I really enjoyed it. Now I want to revisit The Vampire Lestat again after 20 years.

by Anonymousreply 38October 3, 2022 3:42 AM

The first episode was good, but I don’t know if I will stay with it. It’s not my genre, and rather slow for my taste. I’m a superhero, action, adventure fanboy

by Anonymousreply 39October 3, 2022 3:46 AM

[quote]there were 3 factors that influenced her age

None of which matter in the face of her character's entire point being that she's eventually a woman trapped in a small child's body, unable to ever care for herself or be independent. If the character is a teen, all of that is lost. So why bother?

by Anonymousreply 40October 3, 2022 4:45 AM

The show is kind of boring, and so far, the average user rating on IMDb is 6.5.

It seems like EVERY fantasy/horror show with gay main characters now are interracial. Interview with a Vampire, Chucky, House of Dragon, etc. Even that Ryan Murphy show Hollywood.

For once, can we just have two white guys and quit trying to check off diversity boxes. I’m watching this show for a fantasy. Sorry, but the interracial couple is not my fantasy, and I don’t think it’s most white gay male’s fantasy.

by Anonymousreply 41October 3, 2022 4:50 AM

Seemed pretty gay to me.

by Anonymousreply 42October 3, 2022 4:56 AM

The second episode was a bit of a letdown compared to the first. Maybe it's just that the first was SO good while the second was just average. Hope it picks up again in the third. I want more gay scenes.

[quote]For once, can we just have two white guys and quit trying to check off diversity boxes.

Most white showrunners don't truly give a fuck about inclusion, they're just terrified of the Twitter mob. What we're seeing now in film and TV is an overcorrection of real problems, which as a Latino I understand. But at some point, the woke generation is going to have to accept that some stories just aren't very diverse or at least don't have POC leads, and it's not a crime to tell them the way they were written.

by Anonymousreply 45October 3, 2022 9:53 AM

[quote]For once, can we just have two white guys

For once? Surely you jest? That’s the way it’s been for years. If you don’t want to see an interracial gay romance, then don’t watch. Fortunately, we now live in a world that no longer caters to the lily white fantasies of bigots like you.

by Anonymousreply 46October 3, 2022 9:53 AM

Jacob Anderson is the best and hottest part about this show. He sizzles. Without him, the show is extremely slow and unexciting.

by Anonymousreply 47October 3, 2022 11:43 AM

R47 I agree. Jacob Anderson is very good. The confessional in the church was emmy worthy.

by Anonymousreply 48October 3, 2022 11:59 AM

R41 - IMDB users will downvote the gay content.

by Anonymousreply 49October 3, 2022 12:04 PM

R46, I probably won’t watch, but I’ve been deprived of vampire show with two white leads.

by Anonymousreply 50October 3, 2022 3:21 PM

R46, it HASN’T been that way for years with gay/bi characters in TV.

by Anonymousreply 51October 3, 2022 3:31 PM

Okay. Let me just saw that scene was ❤️‍🔥. So sexy and the actors have amazing chemistry. I was not ready for that and it did not disappoint. The sexual tension is off the charts. Even just with longing glances. Think we will continue to get more of these insanely hot moments throughout the season?

by Anonymousreply 59October 4, 2022 12:40 AM

Did they even have sex? It looked like Lestat had a boner while they were floating in the air, but I don't think any penetration took place. I'm gonna be sad if the writers stick to Anne Rice's take on asexual vampires. They have changed so much from the book, they might as well have them have sex too.

by Anonymousreply 62October 4, 2022 7:20 AM

You can’t have sex when you’re draining each other’s blood, silly. It’s fluid dynamics.

by Anonymousreply 63October 5, 2022 6:48 PM

The show is ok, but there is really nothing that makes it Interview With The vampire other than the names of the lead characters. They could have named it anything.

by Anonymousreply 64October 5, 2022 7:24 PM

R63 They were "having sex" (it obviously wasn't sex) before Lestat drank Louis' blood. They were already floating in the air when he drank his blood.

by Anonymousreply 65October 5, 2022 7:34 PM

[quote] Did they even have sex? It looked like Lestat had a boner while they were floating in the air, but I don't think any penetration took place

Louis is a black bottom.

Lestat is a white top.

They were fucking.

But of course, they could not SHOW that on cable television. That much had to be implied.

Louis was so ashamed of being fucked by Lestat that he vowed never to see him again.

But he couldn't resist Lestat's cock.

Even after the death of his own brother, and Lestat killing the Priest to whom he confessed, and Lestat killing the other priest who was a witness to the carnage.

Through the blood, and the fire, and the death. He still gave in to Lestat. In the middle of a church, no less!

It was a crazy scene, man!

Random but been following Jacob Anderson's indta account. It hasn't budged. I'm surprised it isn't 1 mil *at least* because he was on GOT. Also surprised it hasn't gone up due to all of the rave reviews and buzz IWTV is getting.

This show is so good. I was enthralled from the second it began. The writing and acting is top notch and the chemistry between Sam and Jacob is unbelievably smolderingly sexy.

Hoping for more racy scenes between them.

by Anonymousreply 70October 7, 2022 6:36 AM

I was expecting trash after the book fans started moaning about all the changes before the show even aired, but this was such a nice surprise. Looks gorgeous, is wonderfully acted and beautifully written. Grateful they replaced the gay subtext with just text, we've really come a long way since the original books and the movie.

Had no idea Anderson had all of that in him.

by Anonymousreply 71October 7, 2022 6:41 AM

R70 IWTV is only avilable in America. I live in Norway and I don't know when it will be avilable for streaming in my country. I assume his numbers will go up when the rest of the world can watch it.

by Anonymousreply 72October 7, 2022 6:55 AM

I am surprised Jacob's IG numbers haven't gone up post series premiere, but I think his numbers are low because it's only fairly recently that his socials have been under his name. He has always posted under the name he uses as a singer Raleigh Ritchie.

by Anonymousreply 75October 7, 2022 8:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 80October 9, 2022 4:09 PM

Does Louis even love Lestat? It's as if he is only staying with him because they're both vampires. He keeps telling Lestat he doesn't have a family as if they aren't partners. He's so miserable with him but won't leave. Personally, I would have staked Lestat by now because he's too unpredictable.

Ugh! I hadn't seen that trailer for "The Witching Hour." It looks sub-Ryan Murphy. What a great story to be reduced to such trash. It really had tremendous potential to appeal to mainstream audiences. I don't know how they could cast such a strong character with such an unremarkable actor.

I also loved "The Feast of All Saints" but I did not love that Showtime adaptation from years ago. Hopefully they can take another shot at it. It would work better as a limited series.

[quote]Does Louis even love Lestat? It's as if he is only staying with him because they're both vampires.

SPOILERS .... .

.

.

.

Yes he does. As we saw in episode 3, Louis is hurt when Lestat wants to sleep with people besides Louis.

As in many actual open relationships, it's one sided. Lestat (who proposed the open relationship) can sleep with who he wants, but when Daniel sleeps with someone he had feelings for -- Lestat is pissed, even though the guy is only in town for a couple of nights.

As Daniel the interviewer points out, they're in an abusive relationship although he's speaking as someone who has an idea of their whole story already (as it had previously been told to him) so they're technically at the beginning of one. He may love Lestat but he isn't good for him. He even questions if he's even remembering things correctly.

I love how unapologetically gay the series is. TV series Louis is much more interesting than movie Louis.

R89 So what? Who the fuck cares? This show is better than the books and the movie. The show is basically fixing the flaws in the book, like the fact that vampires don't have sex. Vampires are sensual and sexual. Why make vampires asexual? It makes NO fucking sense. Thank god these vampires have sex.

by Anonymousreply 92October 10, 2022 4:42 PM

by Anonymousreply 99October 11, 2022 5:28 AM

What are my feelings about Interview With The Vampire? Well, here goes:

The novel was semi-interesting but dull. There was no sex between Louis and Lestat. Louis hated Lestat. The only sexual feelings Louis has were for his brother who committed suicide and Armand. The most sexual scene in the novel in my opinion is the one at the Vampire Theater where a beautiful mortal girl with long flowing blonde hair (Ann Rice has a thing about long flowing blonde hair) is stripped naked onstage and passed from one vampire to another so they can drink from her until she dies. The whole seems suggest a kind of gang rape.

The movie was really bad. Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Antonio Banderas were ridiculously miscast. Tom Cruise looked like an idiot in his long, curly blonde wig. The only good performances were by Kirsten Dunst as Claudia, who is made twice as old as she was in the novel. and Stephen Rea as Santiago. Any homosexual implications that were in the novel were quite toned down. Louis is made to be inconsolable because his wife and child died, not his brother, who he was in love with.

This tv version totally changes almost everything. Louis is a different race, his story is totally changed. He and Lestat have the hots for each other while in the book Louis despised him. Claudia, also a different race, looks at least 14 years old. In the novel she was five or six, which was supposed to be her tragedy; her mind would mature into an adult's but her body would forever remain a child, which necessitates her having to be dependent forever on another vampire to take care of her. It all sounds like a tawdry mess that has little to do with the novel at all. It should have a disclaimer saying "Based On Ideas Thought Of By Ann Rice." Because it sure as hell isn't much based on the novel.

by Anonymousreply 100October 11, 2022 5:31 AM

[quote] I just think all the complaining from some viewers is ridiculous.

I'm seeing more praise than complaints, though that could also have something to do with people like you raging out at anything less than than gushing at every detail. Sometimes people aren't going to agree with you, and it's allowed.

by Anonymousreply 101October 11, 2022 5:57 AM

Posters here complain that we have so few gay characters on tv. Now we have a show with not only gay characters, but a show where the gay characters get to kiss, have sex and a love life. This happens in maybe 2 out of 100 tv shows. Yet people still complain! Wtf!? Even that overhyped shitty Heartstopper has asexual gay guys. Horny teenage guys who don't drink and don't have sex. They met for milkshakes! Lmao! A date drinking milkshakes. Are they 10 or 15? Seriously. You gotta wonder. They don't act like normal teenagers at all. I get that the show is trying to be wholesome, but they took it way too far. Fuck no. Give me Elite and IWTW any day! I prefer shows where the gays actually get to have sex, you know, like normal gays.

by Anonymousreply 102October 11, 2022 6:05 AM

No wonder the dudebros on reddit don't like this show. It's too gay for them. Most of the dudebros are homophobic shitheads. Why do you think they watch GOT and House of Dragon? They love lesbians. Both shows have lesbians but only have very little gay (as in male) stuff. This is also why you have a ton of shows based on comics that have lesbian characters but not gay characters. They don't want to alienate their main audiences. Remember that one gay kiss in the dark on TWD? The homophobic dudebros complained for weeks. Yet not a single word when the lesbians on the same show kissed. I think AMC knew this show would never be a hit amongst the dudebros. It is too gay for that. Yet they made it anyway, and made it gayer than the books. For that they deserve credit. As I said, a show like this comes once in a blue moon. Why not enjoy it.

by Anonymousreply 103October 11, 2022 6:10 AM

I've seen nothing but positive sentiments about this show on Reddit, with people mainly just surprised the show isn't an outright turd like the book fans were dooming it would be because of all the changes. You're seeing homophobia where there is none.

[quote]They don't act like normal teenagers at all. I get that the show is trying to be wholesome, but they took it way too far. Fuck no. Give me Elite and IWTW any day! I

This made me laugh. Shows like Elite, Gossip Girl, Riverdale... are pure wish fulfillment fantasies. No, teenagers at 16 don't decide to open up their romantic relationship because they're bored (quote from season 1 of Elite). Teenagers in real life are more like the characters in Heartstopper, they're much more boring than what we see depicted on TV.

by Anonymousreply 104October 11, 2022 7:08 AM

[quote] They need to change the name of the show to "Alan Ball's Interview with the Vampire". We're only on the third episode, but the real inspiration they're drawing from is evident...and it's not Anne's books.

The book was of its time - 1977. It cannot be faithfully adapted in this time. I have only seen 3 episodes of "Interview" and I love it. I hated the movie.

R93. I hadn't heard this. I just googled Sam Reid and Douglas Booth and they were pretty inseparable. DB seems to be in a relationship with a woman, rn.

Hope we continue to get some steamy kissing / BJ scenes with Lestat and Louie!

by Anonymousreply 111October 15, 2022 3:59 PM

Personally, I'd feel really nervous about making out with a vampire!

by Anonymousreply 112October 15, 2022 4:02 PM

r30 thanks for mentioning that. Most people do not realize what New Orleans was really like back then. My family history goes back to the 1700's there and my Black family line was started by a white Frenchman and a slave, the Frenchman set her free when she had his son making them both free. There was a community of Black people in NO who were freed with the same dynamic and they lived with all privileges that white people had, they were called free Coloreds.

Anyone interested there is a novel The Grandissimes: A Story of Creole Life the book examines the lives and loves of the extended Grandissime family, which includes members from different races and classes in Creole society. The novel juxtaposes a romanticized version of the French Creole culture with the atrocities committed under the European-American system of slavery in the United States.

Anne Rice wrote some great books but she did not accurately depict ALL of society in New Orleans for those times.

by Anonymousreply 113October 15, 2022 4:23 PM

Billy Eichner would have made a great Lestat!

"Interview with a Kvetch."

by Anonymousreply 114October 15, 2022 4:27 PM

I blame Anne Rice for portraying vampires as sexually alluring, desirable sex objects. According to the old vampire legends vampires are MONSTERS, not sex symbols. They're animated corpses with deathly pale skin, red eyes, sharp, talon-like nails, and horrible foul breath. Not exactly a turn on. They have a power to hypnotize their prey into submission, a somewhat pleasurable state of passivity. But sex? No, there was no sex, unless the vampire penetrating the victim's throat with his teeth and drinking the blood from the wound is considered "sex."

And you're supposed to LIKE Anne Rice's languid, silk and satin clothed, rich vampires. You're supposed to feel for poor tormented Louis; you're supposed to be sorrowful for the murderous, bloodthirsty Claudia because she's doomed to exist as a little girl (a five year old) forever. They're killing machines but your supposed to empathize with them.

An another thing; Lestat, Claudia and Louis kill people all the time, some of them prominent people. And nobody notices? In a city like New Orleans, which is filled with superstitious people, nobody notices all the dead bloodless bodies? Nobody thinks anything of two men who sleep in coffins and their "daughter" who never gets older?

I always found the monster vampires scary. The Anne Rice vampires were just boring, even Lestat who later became a rock star or something.

by Anonymousreply 115October 15, 2022 8:54 PM

They don’t have sex with their victims. Just each other.

by Anonymousreply 116October 15, 2022 9:09 PM

[quote] They don’t have sex with their victims. Just each other.

The old vampire legends never mentioned vampires having sex with each other. I don't recall the vampires in the novel having sex with each other either, although Louis and Armand did have an intense attraction to each other. The hot vampire sex in this tv production is just a device to pull in viewers. A cheap device.

by Anonymousreply 117October 15, 2022 9:37 PM

Bram Stroker’s Dracula had sex with Lucy, Underworld’s Selene had sex with a werewolf, and scads of other vampire shows have sex- why so pissed off about this one? Especially if they’re showing gay vampires?

by Anonymousreply 118October 16, 2022 12:25 AM

[quote]Anne Rice wrote some great books but she did not accurately depict ALL of society in New Orleans for those times.

R113, I take it you've never read her historical novel The Feast of All Saints, then? You couldn't ask for a more nuanced, detailed book about the free people of color in New Orleans/Louisiana. It's probably her finest work.

[quote] I read Dracula. Dracula did NOT 'have sex" with Lucy. In that awful "Bram Stoker's Dracula" movie he's seen in a wolf shape rubbing himself between her legs and the lurid movie depicted Lucy as a slut who was getting off sexually when she attacked by Dracula. Sexing up vampires is just a way to attract viewers who go in for that kind of stuff. Sex sells.

by Anonymousreply 120October 16, 2022 12:53 AM

Oh ffs, here come the haters again. What are you trying to acconplish, R115? This show might not be for everyone, but I enjoy it. Vampires are fictional creatures. There is no right or wrong way to be a vampire. They are FICTIONAL. Every writer can put their own spin on it. Who cares how they are portrayed? We here have a gay vampire show, with actual gay characters, who get to kiss and have sex, which happens maybe twice a year because gay storylines on tv are that abysmal. Yet the haters like R115 still complain. I don't understand why you watch it if you hate it so much? Why do you do that to yourself? I cannot stand that twee show Heartsopper, you have characters who are perfect, who don't drink, don't swear and don't have sex. Nick is one of the worst tv characters I have ever seen in that he is perfect. No flaws. He doesn't make mistakes like most teenagers and NONE of the characters on that show act like actual teenagers. And what's with horny teenage gays not watnting to have sex? Absolutely ridiculous. Anyways, my point is just... I cannot stand that shitty show. I know I'm in the minority. I know most people like it, which is fine. I don't want to watch it though because it's not my type of show. Do yourself a favor and do the same with IWTV. If it annoys you this much it's clearly not a show for you, which is fine.

by Anonymousreply 121October 16, 2022 6:41 AM

R118 Preach. R115 just wants to be miserable I guess.

by Anonymousreply 122October 16, 2022 6:44 AM

[quote]I blame Anne Rice for portraying vampires as sexually alluring, desirable sex objects.

Then, you're an idiot, R115.

The association of vampirism with sexuality (especially venereal diseases and even homosexuality) goes back to Carmilla, Manor, and probably even before. Even vampire folklore had often sexual connotations; see dhampirs as examples for how many stories involved revenants visited and slept with their loved ones at night. Even prototype vampire myths, like the lamiai and empousai, were seductresses who killed their prey.

by Anonymousreply 123October 16, 2022 7:04 AM

HOLY FUCK is Claudia annoying.

I'm now rooting for sunlight, the stake, whatever's available.

by Anonymousreply 124October 16, 2022 7:22 AM

R124. AGREED. Glad I'm not alone in this. Episode 4 is easily less enjoyable due to her. The Lestat and Louie bits (that weren't arguing) were cute...but I'm here for LouStat! Claudia needs to go.

by Anonymousreply 125October 16, 2022 8:47 AM

I always felt gay vampires would complete our journey to equality. I mean, who can argue with that?

by Anonymousreply 126October 16, 2022 2:29 PM

Claudia should have been CGI.

by Anonymousreply 127October 16, 2022 3:38 PM

Claudia was just too much. I actually looked forward to her arc but it was so messy for me. She took away from Lestat and Louis' story. Like Daniel said, she was a "band aid"...

by Anonymousreply 128October 16, 2022 8:19 PM

There are plenty of relationships that have a Band-Aid Baby thinking that it will make thr relationship stronger. Claudia's inclusion/episode doesn't take away from Louis and Lestat at all. It shows another component of their relationship. As Lestat pointed out-Louis was ready to leave him now he wants to be a family? Lestat's turning of Claudia just like Lestat going along with helping Louis buy the club shows the lengths he will go to out of devotion to Louis.

I think people feel if they're not shown fucking that it's a lesser episode. We are seeing a fully formed domestic gay relationship.

by Anonymousreply 129October 16, 2022 8:47 PM

[quote] Then, you're an idiot

Oh, fuck off. Vampires didn't hump humans and each other before Anne Rice made them into sex symbols. That whole idea got its start with her boring novel. I'm talking in terms of vampire folklore in case you're stupid enough to think I believe vampires are real. In "Dracula" the novel he had the power to make his victims inert in order to drink their blood, and the hypnotism made the victim feel an almost sexual feeling of surrender, but there was no vampire dick going into them. Dracula was a repulsive monster who turned his victims into other repulsive monsters. Vampires used to be SCARY. They aren't anymore, which is a shame. A good scary vampire movie was always fun entertainment. Gay vampires? I guess some people are highly titillated by that. But it's not SCARY. It's just sex to draw in view sexual scenes. I suppose there are viewers who get off on that sort of thing.

[quote] you’ve skipped over the whole 70’s era of erotic vampire films.

I've earlier vampire films that had lurid, sexual type scenes but it was always grotesque seeming .And there was no penetration except for the fangs going into the victim. That was vampire sex; the blood sucking. Now vampires fuck and look like humans. Vampires are no longer monsters; they're just humanoid creatures who happen to live on blood and sleep in coffins.

by Anonymousreply 134October 16, 2022 11:01 PM

R134, I agree with your basic point. Anne Rice’s vampire world is a disco fantasy of being young and rich and sexy forever. It really takes the edge off of the soullessly dead part. Vampires—going by traditional lore—didn’t fuck because they didn’t reproduce sexually. They were corpses. That didn’t stop them from being symbols of forbidden or “unnatural” sexuality. The very first great literary vampire was the beautiful lesbian protagonist of J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s “Carmilla”, whose relationship with her would-be victim is portrayed as intensely sexual. But Carmilla still kills other young girls; she’s still undead.

by Anonymousreply 135October 16, 2022 11:34 PM

[quote] Dracula was a repulsive monster who turned his victims into other repulsive monsters.

Actually Bela Lugosi’s interpretation was considered a huge sex symbol in 1931, though it’s hard to believe now.

[quote] There was a community of Black people in NO who were freed with the same dynamic and they lived with all privileges that white people had, they were called free Coloreds.

Free people of color did NOT have the same privileges as white people in Louisiana. The free people of color (and Blacks) are responsible for almost everything that makes NOLA distinctive and exciting -- the customs, the cuisine, the architecture, the unique aesthetics, the music -- the great travesty is that free people of color were still segregated, were not allowed to vote, and could not legally intermarry with whites.

However, most Louisiana natives of all races have some African ancestry. The 'white' ones say they have Native American ancestry, it could be true but most often it's Black. I lived there for a few years and it's true what they say -- Louisiana has the whitest-looking Black people and the Blackest-looking white people.

by Anonymousreply 139October 22, 2022 2:56 AM

Completely agree, R119. For a fictional work, "The Feast of All Saints" is very historically accurate in its depiction of the time and culture. Rice took her research of that culture seriously.

On a serious note, there is cause to be concerned about presenting homosexuality as a perversion engaged in by demonic, depraved monsters. It sounds ridiculous but the MAGAT hordes have become preoccupied with "grooming" and the so-called "predatory" behavior of gays -- all the "don't say gay" bullshit.

Vampires would not be my top choice, I would be happier with gay superheroes or astronauts or athletes.

by Anonymousreply 147October 22, 2022 5:22 AM

R145 Preach! The series is much better than the movie, I can't comment on the book because I haven't read it. I don't think changing the ethnicity of one of the vampires made it worse, if anything it made it better. It added some depth to the storytelling. I found episode 1 and 3 good exactly because of Louis' black family and their whole back story.

by Anonymousreply 148October 22, 2022 5:23 AM

I am enjoying the series. I even like that Claudia is older than in the book. I do not understand the objections to Louis being made Black instead of white. I don't recall any backstory of Louis' family in the book that is supplanted by the change of race. I agree r148 that this change makes it more intriguing. It is possible that Louis has biological descendants -- of his sister's children -- alive at the time of the interview. That overlap could make for interesting stories if this continues beyond one season.

by Anonymousreply 149October 22, 2022 5:36 AM

This series bears little resemblance to the book. It shouldn't be called "Interview With The Vampire." It should be called "A Gay Vampire Story That Steals From Anne Rice's Novel Interview With The Vampire." And the changes do NOT make for a better story. It's a different story, not a better one. It's not better by a long shot.

by Anonymousreply 150October 22, 2022 6:42 AM

To each his/her own...

The official title of the series is "Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire." Anne Rice approved this adaptation before her death. Her estate INSISTED on including her name in the title. Rice and her son have executive producer credits on every episode of the first season.

by Anonymousreply 151October 22, 2022 8:02 AM

[quote]Anne Rice approved this adaptation before her death. Her estate INSISTED on including her name in the title. Rice and her son have executive producer credits on every episode of the first season.

I'm sure AMC would love for people to believe that those honorary EP credits for two people who left the show under VERY cloudy circumstances must signal official approval of their choices.

If all were well between Christopher Rice/Anne's estate and the makers of the show, they wouldn't have Christopher Rice under some kind of gag order. He'd be on social media hyping the show. He'd be telling people, "yes, it's different in a lot of ways, but Mom approved it, yada yada yada". Instead, he tersely refers anyone who asks him about it to AMC+'s accounts and otherwise behaves as if the show doesn't exist.

by Anonymousreply 152October 22, 2022 11:27 AM

Is that your vision for this series, too, that it would stick pretty closely to the text?

Yes, I want to do it faithfully. That’s what the readers tell me they want. I want to take that approach all the way, and if I make innovations and changes, which inevitably I will, I want them to be completely in tune with the vision and the ambience of the Vampire Chronicles. I want to give them the situations they expect to see, and the characters that they expect to see. Again, I think TV is the ideal place for that.

Would you be involved in casting decisions?

We hope to be involved at every stage! I want to launch this in a way that my son Christopher is the executive producer at the helm of it and I’m sort of assisting him. He’s got the youth and the stamina and the vigor to actually take the leading role in this. At my age, I would rather assist him than be totally in charge, but yes, I think we would have a great deal to do with casting. We do not really want to let this out of our hands until we find the people that are most sympathetic to our vision for it.

What would your Louis need to have?

Beauty. Great beauty. It’s Louis’ beauty that attracted Lestat to him, and I would hope it would be a beautiful actor like Matt Bomer. Somebody with that incredible beauty. Brad Pitt did a beautiful job in the original film, and he set the bar very high when it comes to physical beauty.

I know AMC would love fewer EPs.

Rice died so the reason for her exit from the process is not at all cloudy. Rice, or her son, could have distanced themselves from the project if they didn't approve of the changes. She certainly did with the movie. Suggesting Rice may have shared any misgivings similar to those expressed here -- particularly the racist ones -- is unsubstantiated speculation. Ultimately, it won't matter since the series is finding its audience and a great many of them are unfamiliar with the books.

MATT BOMER!!! Golden Globe winner, Matt Bomer?! I think not, Ms. Rice,. He's way too big time for an AMC+ series. I mean, he has a Golden Globe! Besides he'd never want to play a glassy-eyed vampire (again), he covets roles where he can use all the muscles in his completely natural, unbotoxed face to breathe life into a character.

Although, yes, I agree he is an incredible beauty, certainly one of the great beauties in Hollywood history. A great beauty who is also an unmatched thespian, and a Golden Globe winner.

Both of them went silent about the project in the spring of 2020 (a year and a half before she died), and had been almost as quiet for close to six months before that, so I would call that distancing. Christopher Rice's canned deflection to any and all inquiries now certainly counts as distancing. I don't know if either of them were displeased with the changes or not, and I don't claim to. But I've followed the progress of this series ever since Anne announced it, and it's ridiculous to pretend there's nothing curious about their exit and Chris Rice's current method of handling comments about the series.

R178--

[quote]the #1 new drama on ad-supported cable in 2022

Their numbers on ad-supported cable are at the link below. They've lost viewers every week but one since the premiere--and crucially, they lost 40% of the 18-49 demographic between the premiere and the second episode, and they haven't gotten them back. AMC keeps touting the show as the biggest new series in AMC+'s history, but without actual streaming numbers it's impossible to know what to make of that.

Someone on the other thread pointed out AMC is using the Walking Dead to push IWTV hard, but they just don't have the same audience. IWTV has a Hannibal audience vibe: tumblr fangurls and gay men. But AMC's core audience is mostly straight white dudes who seem to have noped out after sampling the premiere, and the network needs them for a series they want to be their new flagship. Feels like a mismatch between network and show.

It will probably pick up some before the 2nd season, but it's only going to get more expensive to produce. If they get to Queen of the Damned I'll be surprised.

by Anonymousreply 180November 5, 2022 5:57 AM

Something else to think about: there's bad blood between Anne Rice's estate and AMC or they wouldn't have her son under a NDA. Part of the reason for using a pre-existing property is to take advantage of a built in fanbase and its resources. IWTV hasn't been able to do that as much without the support of Rice's estate. It doesn't help that many new show fans are constantly shitting on the books and the old school fans. The full power of Rice's fanbase has gone unrealized online as a result of all this stuff.

by Anonymousreply 181November 5, 2022 6:03 AM

r179, AMC bought the rights to 10 of AR's books, they're determined to make this universe succeed.

by Anonymousreply 182November 5, 2022 4:00 PM

Also, the story is on their side in the long term. Sure, they made Louis into a gay black man, and audiences might not accept black gay men as protagonists, BUT after the end of IWTV, this will get better for the studio. Then, the story's protagonist will be white bisexual Lestat, who audiences will hate/love.

The fandom is mostly young and female (hence Twitter, Tumblr & TikTok) and they stream it, because the ratings from regular tv are not great. Also teh gays of course.

Another clue that not many young straight white guys are watching it is how small the fan group on Reddit is (Reddit being the hive of young straight white guys). It's taken them all season to limp to 4000 subscribers.

So, girls and gays. Hannibal 2.0, not Walking Dead.

I’m surprised it has ratings as high as it does. It isn’t exactly action packed and can be slow and talky. It’s too much of a weird romance. I’m probably not watching next season.

The girls watch it for the two hot actors playing the vampires. The gays watch it for the homosex. They certainly don't watch it for the writing or the acting.

Who the hell cares about that? Nobody expected straight men to watch this show, and I doubt they liked the movie or the book, either.

Sam's seeming lack of underarm hair is a turn off.

It's a turn on for me. I like my men smooth like dolphins.

A hairy black bottom and a silky blond top. No wonder there's no buzz about this show.

AMC cares. Straight white dudes rule the fantasy/sci-fi world. AMC wants this to be their new Walking Dead, their Game of Thrones, a franchise series with spinoffs. Tumblr chicks and gays alone won't cut it.

Speaking of, the ratings are out for the season finale...the overall viewership was the lowest of the season.

R132 What’s a POA?

No, they don't. Zombies are one thing, but everybody knows that what makes or breaks a vampire show is not straight male viewers, and nobody would even try to draw such public by having gay sex scenes ON THE FIRST EPISODE. Why is it so important to you to pretend every one wanted straight men to watch this?

I assume "piece of ass", r196.

It's early days yet. AMC is invested in Anne Rice's Immortal Universe and renewed IWTV before the first episode aired. They are willing to wait to see if this pays off.

Sam Reid has such a TINY waist. He's in spectacular shape, as Lestat should be! Has he always been this way or did he do this for IWTV?

His face is unremarkable so he has to keep his body nice and tight.

R22 you said with your whole chest "Sam Reid is straight"..you must be new here because that could not be farther from the truth.
