Should taxpayers be on the hook when Florida floods and California burns?

by Anonymousreply 56September 30, 2022 8:37 PM

They’re apart of the United States of America

by Anonymousreply 1September 29, 2022 11:32 PM

we've given over $55B to Ukraine OP

by Anonymousreply 2September 29, 2022 11:34 PM

NO!!! Those people need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

by Anonymousreply 3September 29, 2022 11:44 PM

Florida doesn’t give a fuck about us here in California, why should I care if they drown?

by Anonymousreply 4September 29, 2022 11:52 PM

Maybe FL should fly DeSantis to Martha's Vineyard.

by Anonymousreply 5September 29, 2022 11:55 PM

Most the people in California don't live in the forests but most the people in Florida live near the water. You can't really compare the two.

by Anonymousreply 6September 29, 2022 11:57 PM

Most people in Florida built/bought their homes/trailers just a few feet above sea level. Even without climate change, they were living on borrowed time. Fuck 'em.

by Anonymousreply 7September 30, 2022 12:01 AM

They get thoughts and prayers.

by Anonymousreply 8September 30, 2022 12:07 AM

At least the hurricane hit the one of the red areas over the state. Fort Myers, Sanibel Island all Red. Over 60% of the Trump electorate. Can you believe that Key West voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020? If you live on Sanibel Island, no way off the island except by boat.

by Anonymousreply 9September 30, 2022 12:08 AM

I don’t have a problem helping them out yet again. I believe kids shouldn’t have to suffer just because their parents are ignorant.

by Anonymousreply 10September 30, 2022 12:13 AM

Why should I feel sorry? It was Florida who got drowned, not me!

by Anonymousreply 11September 30, 2022 12:18 AM

I feel FL should get as much $ as DeSantis voted for when Hurricane Sandy hit we needed (OUR) money to rebuild.

In other words: Drown, FL.

by Anonymousreply 12September 30, 2022 12:18 AM

hit and*

by Anonymousreply 13September 30, 2022 12:19 AM

No. Fuck 'em.

by Anonymousreply 14September 30, 2022 12:22 AM

OP what about the estimated $30B for student debt relief for those like me who went to college got a diploma or degree that gave them the opportunity for a higher paying career?

by Anonymousreply 15September 30, 2022 12:41 AM

Who invited them? Taxpayer dollars spent on those who never paid US taxes

by Anonymousreply 16September 30, 2022 12:48 AM

The United States has a division of donor states vs subsidized states. The first pay the most in federal taxes, while the latter spend more than they contribute. Some of the most federally dependent states include Wyoming, California, and New Mexico. Each of these leads in a different category, like benefits users, SNAP participants, or Medicaid enrollment. Wyoming, however, doesn’t get lots of federal business, unlike Virginia and Texas. Still, this concept goes beyond who gets the most federal funding by state. There are many other factors in play, and that’s why the situation in every state must be individually analyzed.

by Anonymousreply 17September 30, 2022 12:51 AM

Right.

by Anonymousreply 18September 30, 2022 12:54 AM

Interesting

by Anonymousreply 19September 30, 2022 1:31 AM

No, but for different reasons. CA because as basically with the economy of a decent sized country it can help itself. FL no because they want small government and states rights.

by Anonymousreply 20September 30, 2022 1:49 AM

Yes. Not because I give a shit about crazy Florida, but because we are still, at least in name, the United States of America. We stand by each other in times of need. Some states get hit by hurricanes. Others get tornadoes, wildfires, earthquakes, floods, etc. A few get hit by volcanoes. Those natural disasters, even if they are caused by or made worse by global climate change, are not the fault of individual citizens. They need help, and our tax dollars should go where they are needed -not just back to those who paid them in.

Has anyone else noticed how right-wing crazies like to blame "acts of god" on the gays -but conveniently forget about that when a conservative state like Florida gets hit. I think god is showing her disapproval of DeSantis and his regime!

by Anonymousreply 21September 30, 2022 2:08 AM

So, God is showing disapproval of Newsom and CA with wildfires, floods, droughts, mudslides and earthquakes R21?

by Anonymousreply 22September 30, 2022 3:23 AM

[quote]They’re apart of the United States of America

No, dear, they aren't.

by Anonymousreply 23September 30, 2022 3:47 AM

No, R22, I was pointing out the idiocy of the whole idea.

by Anonymousreply 24September 30, 2022 5:28 AM

You mean like how it was on the hook for rebuilding after Sept. 11th of 2001?

Like the money NY will need when Polio explodes due to anti-vaxxers?

WE the taxpayers pay for all this shit. The Federal govt. does the handling, while we do the paying.

Begrudging bitches. Become better than your enemies, not the same.

by Anonymousreply 25September 30, 2022 5:49 AM

FUCK THEM

by Anonymousreply 26September 30, 2022 6:02 AM

How about we do this since those red states hate, hate, hate "socialism," esp. those deplorables in places like MS:

If NY, CA, NJ, MA, CT end up needing money for a disaster, they get back what they paid into the system. If AL, WV, KY, TN, MS, LA, etc need money for their disasters, they get back what they paid into the system. I mean it's certainly not a good look when you're a RED state that screams about "welfare" and "handouts" and "socialism," when you're a fucking leech with no money, right?

by Anonymousreply 27September 30, 2022 6:44 AM

R20, sure, we'll do it by holding back what we pay to the feds. . You do know that we pay more into the federal government than we get back?

by Anonymousreply 28September 30, 2022 7:09 AM

Yes. California pays more federal tax than any other state. I guess California could keep that money and pay for their own fire related expenses.

by Anonymousreply 29September 30, 2022 7:22 AM

California is well off enough that it should pay for itself and for other states. It's fair redistribution.

by Anonymousreply 30September 30, 2022 7:25 AM

R30 Uh, no.

by Anonymousreply 31September 30, 2022 7:26 AM

Basically, shithole red states want to tell blue states what to do, to control people's lives, to legalize their hate...and do it all on our blue state dime.

by Anonymousreply 32September 30, 2022 7:30 AM

r16 Illegal immigrants almost all pay local and state sales tax and sometimes property tax, and almost always their employers will submit federal taxes, SS and Medicare withholding, and without valid social security cards they can never collect a dime of Social Security or Medicare even if they work here for 50 years. In other words YOUR social security and Medicare are enhanced by the contributions of people you despise. I strongly doubt the figures of Judicial Watch, an ultra-conservative think tank. If you can support those figures from a non-biased source I'll reconsider.

by Anonymousreply 33September 30, 2022 7:49 AM

Judicial Watch???

No wonder I already had the asshole @16 on ignore. Bigots use JW as a source. You might as well link to a klan site for info on MLK.

by Anonymousreply 34September 30, 2022 7:53 AM

if you had r16 on ignore, why did you bother to see what r16 said? you already knew you had r16 on ignore, but you just had to look anyway?

by Anonymousreply 35September 30, 2022 12:39 PM

[quote] The Florida Power & Light Company — which had nearly 1 million customers without electricity on Friday morning — said the recovery could take some time in the areas most devastated by the storm. “Hurricane Ian’s catastrophic winds will mean parts of our system will need to be rebuilt — not restored,” the company said.

Gee MAGAOTS, Cali ain’t lookin so bad now, is it.

by Anonymousreply 36September 30, 2022 12:51 PM

You can't swim your way out of fire. So, yeah, Cali seems kinda bad.

Churches don’t pay property taxes. A hurricane being an act of god should require a compulsory donation. Tax the tabernacle invoice the Unitarians and change the Catholics. They have been hoarding and getting special treatment since 1776. It is long past time for gods representatives to throw in.

by Anonymousreply 42September 30, 2022 3:52 PM

What if it happened to you OP?

I’m sure some assistance would be appreciated.

Yes of course we have to bail each other out.

Except someone has to rethink this. I keep asking my husband how insurance companies can possibly insure people in Florida. How many millions of cars were destroyed? But yes, even though I can't swim, I'd rather suffer through a coastal hurricane than a massive wild fire.

Years ago someone wrote or asked somewhere why don't Northeasterners (well, I think this person mentioned Buffalo) get bailed out when it snows like mad? Why don't the Floridians come shovel us out? Why do we have to put up with it? And then one year (it was before COVID), New Jersey looked like a mess, there were trees down everywhere. But it was never on the news. When other states look like that it's a huge deal, but not here. We just put up with it.

There are some places where humans are not supposed to live year-round. They might be nice vacation destinations, but it just doesn't work in the long run. These people should be forced to relocate to the midwest. Yes, they have shitty winters there, but that's life.

by Anonymousreply 46September 30, 2022 6:45 PM

If you’re going to build homes on barrier islands or any place that is prone to being hit by a natural disaster then the tax payers shouldn’t be expected to pay. Especially if your house isn’t up to current code. A lot of the houses that were destroyed in Ian were older homes that weren’t up to current code.

At some point the responsibility for living in these places is your responsibility and not the tax payer’s.

by Anonymousreply 47September 30, 2022 6:50 PM

I lived in Florida for eight years. Those fucks deserve everything that happens to them.

by Anonymousreply 48September 30, 2022 6:55 PM

Does America rely on those states for goods and services?

by Anonymousreply 49September 30, 2022 6:58 PM

Troll

by Anonymousreply 50September 30, 2022 6:59 PM

If any emergency funds are sent to Florida, the corrupt Republicans will skim most of it for themselves. Watch Ron DeSantis, Matt Gaetz, Marco Rubio, and Rick Scott mysteriously update their homes, get new cars, take expensive, lengthy vacations, etc, etc, etc.

by Anonymousreply 51September 30, 2022 7:04 PM

God hates Florida. God hates Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 52September 30, 2022 7:06 PM

To R35 and the geniuses who liked your post: Did it ever occur to you that all I had to do was read r33's post? You know, the one right above mine. I didn't even read 16's post, but when I knew f r o m R33 that it had quoted JW, I knew I had made the right decision putting it on ignore.

Judicial Watch is an absolute garbage, bigoted site run by Frank Gaffney and that steroid abusing closet-case Tom Fitton. They also paid Ginny T. as an adviser and a case involving them at the SC had her corrupt husband as the only dissenting vote. That case is never brought up when people talking about how corrupt Clarence and his wife are. That fucker needs to be thrown off the SC. Corrupt as hell.

by Anonymousreply 53September 30, 2022 7:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 54September 30, 2022 7:14 PM

Tell you a secret: Every fucking time we have any kind of natural disaster, we ALL pay. Every insurance company raises their rates across the board. So if you live in fucking Minnesota, after this hurricane, your rates will go up. Everyone should be concerned about clean energy and helping the environment. Because this shit will get worse. And it is definitely going to affect agriculture too. So expect shortages and higher prices at the grocery stores.

by Anonymousreply 55September 30, 2022 7:14 PM

R20, California has the fifth largest economy in the world. Not a "decent sized" country. The fifth largest.

If we didn't pay into the federal coffers, not only we would not need any federal money (duh) redistributed back to us at a fraction of what we put in, but so many other states wouldn't have their subsidies... since we in part bankroll it.

So, yeah, give us whatever the hell we need for fires.

Florida can fuck off. Don't want to pay much in taxes? Cool. Deal with emergencies on your own. I'd suggest a good generator and canned food.
