by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 30, 2022 3:53 AM |
A 97% used to be super tough to get 10 years ago.
It was “Wonder Woman” that destroyed Rotten Tomatoes. When they started publicizing the 100% / 99%, it became more popular for journalist to rave over shitty PC movies.
“The Dark Knight” is a modern classic and didn’t get close to 90% on RT, as an example of how that site has changed.

[quote] Comedian and actor Billy Eichner is taking a stab at the feel-good genre with “Bros,” an R-rated romantic comedy that opens in 3,300 North American theaters on Friday. The movie, from Universal Pictures, is aiming to generate $8 million to $10 million in its opening weekend. It’s not a huge number, but the film carries a modest $22 million production budget.
[quote] “Bros” is debuting in theaters alongside Paramount’s R-rated chiller “Smile,” which is projected to cast a toothy glow over the domestic box office charts with $16 million to $20 million. That’s a stellar result given that it only cost the studio $17 million to make.
So, rule of thumb break even for "Bros" may be $44 million or so needed in ticket sales over its run in theaters.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 30, 2022 4:10 AM |
If it doesn't do well at the box office, there will be more direct to streaming movies on Hulu and Neftlix.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 30, 2022 4:14 AM |
Love, Simon wasn't a rom-com exactly, but it earned $66 million worldwide on a production budget of $17 million. I believe it was considered a modest, profitable hit.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 30, 2022 4:26 AM |
Plus film critics usually just do a thumbs up or thumbs down now. To get 97% would imply it’s a perfect movie but that’s not even close to reality.

Variety described the movie as “Self-satisfied.” The same could be said about Eichner, who is a bit up his own ass in the press parade.
Also, if the movie fails to cross over, I’ll tell you exactly why: straights are alarmed by the pick-your-gender ideology. And they’re lumping us in with that shit. Fuck the HRC and all the other organizations for barely giving us a minute to enjoy our new rights before terrifying everyone with the trans/gender identity shit.

Yes, Billy educates the “straight” Luke on queer history and what started Stonewall and how we owe Pride to the courageous acts of one Marsha P. Johnson. The straight guy did not know queer history at all. Billy shouts, “How could you not know any of this? How could you be queer without knowing queer history?!? If you want to be queer, you gotta learn!” then grabs his hand and runs with him through the streets and into the queer museum.

This has been a marketing trick for a while now, but never has it been as overused as this past month, when the studios have released so many dogs. When you see tracking is disappointing the week before opening, you send out a press release the day before saying you expect XYZ film to gross anywhere between 1-5 million less than you actually do. Then when it grosses exactly what the tracking predicted, you can say "WOW! What a HIT! It exceeded our expectations!" Everyone knows this bullshit trick, but they keep on doing it don't they, Viola and Olivia?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 30, 2022 11:16 AM |
An example of a recent $10 million dollar opening:
A movie that I loved, Spielberg's West Side Story, earned about $10 million dollars domestically in its opening weekend in 2,820 theaters. It cost $100 million to make, and probably needed double that to break even. It topped out at $76 mil total box office worldwide.
Best wishes for Bros' box office. The relatively small ($22 mil) cost should help on its path to profitability.

I’ll pass. Bowen Yang’s involvement alone is an ick for me. I also agree with the posters commenting that Eichner is up his own ass. In his newfangled Instagram bio, he touts himself as the “star/co-writer of the historic gay rom com BROS”. He is in—and perhaps even beyond—Viola Davis territory.

This, absolutely this.
Billy and Luke have good chemistry but Billy is so whiny, I had to wonder how Luke's character could even be drawn to him. And the script is (not surprisingly) tailored to give Billy big scenes, and the majority of the spotlight. The supporting characters are paper thin, just types, and not fully-dimensional characters. For me, a good rom-com has to have good supporting characters for the main characters to play off of.

There appear to be at least two, along with a prominent nonbinary person of color. I saw a video of a panel discussion with the stars, director, and producer. One (Eve Lindley) was enthusiastic about the movie, the other two passive-aggressively griping about not being the leads. While sitting feet from the lead actors and the people who cast them.
I'm sure they'll be asked to return if it's successful enough to merit a sequel.

In a year or two, Luke will probably do gay Christmas movie for Netflix or Hulu. Hulu seems to have interest in gay projects afer Fire Island and the lesbian Christmas movie Happiest Season. Happiest Season is considered to be a problematic due to how one of the lesbian characters was written and also some have issues that Clea Duvall co-wrote the movie with a straight woman. It has so much working against it. It’s a comedy, it’s a romantic comedy, and it’s gay themed. When was the last box office comedy hit? “Rich Crazy Asians” back in 2018?
Rotten Tomatoes was the machine behind “Wonder Woman”, “Black Panther”, and “Crazy Rich Asians”, they were pushed for being the first of their kind and Rotten Tomatoes gave them 100% scores and that hype helped them succeed. But we’re talking 2016 - 2018 and it’s 2022, a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes is common at this point.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | October 1, 2022 3:54 AM |
Also, when I first heard “Bros”, I immediately thought it would kind of be a gay version of “My Best Friend’s Wedding”.
I tonight it was going to tap into the straight guy friend we were in love with.
I know some people here would disagree but I think a romantic comedy based on a “is he gay” plot would have been more successful and connecting to audiences. Because we’ve all had bros we wished were gay.
But this story just feels fictitious and PC.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | October 1, 2022 3:57 AM |
In Bros, Eichner plays unlucky in love podcast host/museum curator Bobbie Lieber, who falls in lust with strapping single guy Aaron (Luke Macfarlane). As the duo embark on a tentative romance, they also open up their sex lives to include hot and heavy threesomes (and foursomes) as well as casual Grindr hook-ups with other people. Capturing that aspect of contemporary LGBTQ life is something that was important for the film's out gay stars, and sets Bros apart from the typical Apatow/Stoller joint, where the central couple tends to be monogamous.
"What's fun — especially for straight audiences — is that whole movie is a throwback to the elements of Apatow movies or romantic comedies that we love, but with this fresh, new and somewhat provocative perspective," notes Eichner. "It's not just your run-of-the mill rom-com."
Straight people watch gay men porn at home not in movie theaters.

I hope it does well for the sake of gay male oriented movies in the mainstream...but I have to say, Billy's been coming off as one hell of a pompous, ignorant ass while promoting this movie. I'd give it a 75% because the movie felt very scattered. It couldn't decide whether it was a political movie or if it was a romcom. It's hard for me to focus on the romance when 50% of the time I'm having a mental debate in my mind about the different political statements made in the movie. Most of the sex scenes sucked anyways, except for the one where they hit each other. And most of the time they were thrusting, they were doing it in a way that wasn't anatomically correct. Two men can't fuck missionary with their stomachs and faces that close to each other. It was as if Billy Eichner had a pussy. But there were definitely very funny and relatable moments. I would've been more impressed if it was released on a streaming service, and I think everyone else would too.

Just saw it. Its hilarious if you can handle Billy Eichner. It's very much him playing himself. But its like the best elements of Judd Apatow movies with better character development packed into 90 mins. Audience clapped at the end.

and this is the reason I won't see Bros aside from the trailer which highlights some of the supposedly funny line
the last line of the NY Times' generally favorable review:
It accomplishes what “Bros,” like every other rom-com, aims to do: charm audiences with a spirited, corny facsimile of life.

R114 Bros is 115 minutes though. No comedy should be over 90 minutes and every single Apatow production goes way beyond this and they all out-stay their welcome.

Movies are tricky post-pandemic.
Many theaters shut down and the audiences that do go to movies tend to be young me, like high school and college age young, who go for superhero movies.
A lot of the audience for indie type films, rom-coms, dramas and anything that does not have a lot of special effects would rather just wait for the movie to show up on Amazon or iTunes--there's not longer the cultural imperative to see things in theaters when they first come out.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | October 1, 2022 9:58 AM |

Apatow produced female led comedies like Trainwreck and Bridesmaids to make himself look like a male feminist type despite producing or directing movies that were sexist. Universal’s wide release of the Billy Eichner co-scripted/starring LGBTQ romantic comedy Bros is coming up quite short in No. 4 with $4.75M, outpegged by TriStar’s lesbian actioner The Woman King in No. 3 with $6.2M.

Dan Levy and Bowen Yang will probably work some screenplay at some point. Hard to tell if they would be able to get a theatrical release in part because Bros is bombing and studios might not want to possibly take financial hits in the future.

r143, yeah, and those great gay movies are generally limited to those gay film fests, never given a larger push or chance to reach a wider audience. They may play in smaller theaters before ending up on streaming. Movies made by major studios are given more marketing, wider releases, and more of a chance to reach beyond a niche audience. I saw it at a 4:30pm showing in an nyc suburb. About 24 viewers, most were 20 year olds/ college age. They laughed the most. I as a 50 year old like Billy E., and while I liked the movie, I hoped for bigger laughs. The ROM part was good, the COM part was flailing a bit. The museum part of the story was ham-handed, my favorite part was the P-town bit. Personally I don’t find Billy unattractive (a bit whiny yes) so the pairing of leads wasn’t an issue for me. The song was a little cringey for me.
The messaging was lowest common denominator level GAY, seemingly tailored more to educate middle America, non-DL reading straights. Luke McFarland is hot. I appreciated how the Grindr life/ friend group support / no romantic relationship situation many are living was portrayed, I found that to be pretty spot on.

This movie has two things the writer’s branch likes very much: monologues (three very good ones) and a writer/actor

I also thought it was needlessly coarse, although that’s probably not what’s keeping audiences away.
Most romcoms don’t include lines like “please fuck me,” which Luke says to Billy, or when Billy says to Luke (paraphrasing) “your large penis was in my tight asshole.”
I don’t think When Harry Met Sally would have been such a big success if Meg Ryan had asked Tom Hanks to lick her cunt.

And, the biggest or of all, why the fuck did this cost $22m to make?!?!?!? It's a fucking' Hallmark romance with NO big stars!!!
Even if the movie is good, millions of people aren't gonna flock to a gay rom com without any stars in it.
If they wanted a $20m opening weekend, then cast one of the "Chrises" in it...Hemsworth or Evans or Pratt or Pine. Or, all of them for that matter for "Bros Bukkake Gang Bang".

Worse yet, "Bros" thinks of itself as the most important pioneer solely because it's doing so on a mainstream level."

[quote] I want to see it for McFarlane.
That was my biggest reason too, R79. I now know what “I want you to fuck me” sounds like when said in Luke MacFarlane’s voice. Money well spent, in my opinion.
[quote] If they wanted a $20m opening weekend, then cast one of the “Chrises” in it...Hemsworth or Evans or Pratt or Pine.
Pratt and Pine would never take on this sort of role, for opposite reasons. Hemsworth or Evans might be willing (I don’t know, neither has played gay yet so far as I’m aware), but both are highly in demand and I don’t think their schedules or the movie’s budget would have allowed for either of them.

If you don’t like gays, be sure to catch The Woman King before it leaves theaters. We sure need your help to reach $150 million.

He's charmless and visually unappealing. I actually like Billy on the street I think it's funny I like looking at the location some of which I'm very familiar with and I've even seen some of the people on the street literally around 23rd and 9th several times. His abrasiveness and lack of sex appeal are exactly what makes that show work, but it doesn't work for a ROM com and based on the trailers and scenes that I've seen much of the dialogue seems to be stand-up comedy material it doesn't seem contemporary it seems to take place some 20 years ago during the time at which Billy was a 20 something and the central relationship doesn't seem believable at all.

Gay men never refer to each other bros though when they're dating. Why did they name the film this?

It got mostly good reviews, and still a flop. That happens.

"Will now attack"? Where have you been the last couple of months, R239?

Interesting we have not touched the generation thing here, let's be honest, many DLers are older or already senior citizens, their thoughts and critiques on the cast and the story would differ from gays under 30 or even 40. Read this thread and other ones about "Bros", you can tell some posters are not just "older", they are old. I won't be surprised that generations divided on the overall opinion of this film.

[quote]As the duo embark on a tentative romance, they also open up their sex lives to include hot and heavy threesomes (and foursomes) as well as casual Grindr hook-ups with other people. Capturing that aspect of contemporary LGBTQ life is something that was important for the film's out gay stars.
But it was never going to fly with the straight, mainstream audience they were clearly hoping for. Rom-coms are about the fantasy of finding true love, not about reality. The audience doesn't want to know about Harry thinking his first wife was better at giving blowjobs than Sally, or that Sally has been fantasizing about the UPS guy. R212 makes good points.

“Straights” didn’t show up, and if you’re not a “weirdo” you should go see it, it needs to be seen on the BIG screen.
Why is nobody talking about the bad choice of picking an unlikable lead for your first major Gay RomCom?

A movie with a horridly wretchedly super fugly cunt as lead failed? Quelle surprise. Even a movie with hugely fug Sarah Jessie Parker would do better.

R241 age has nothing to do with finding Billy loud obnoxious and sexless which besides being unfunny is the reason the film sucks.

[Quote]Yeah, I agree that the film flopped because of Billy. The trailers are annoying, he’s annoying in the 7 minute interviews he gives on talk shows, etc. Why would anyone want to pay to see him when they won’t watch him for free on tv? I bet even his parents refuse to Zoom with him because he’s so annoying. Him topping Luke? Sure. Even if Luke is a bottom in real live, it’s unimaginable that Billy can act like a top, let alone be one in real life.
Bump
