The last episode of Grace Under Fire

Was reading a thread on Sitcoms Online and someone said the last episode of Grace Under Fire was a complete mess and they couldn't even describe how bad it was. I thought, surely it can't have been that bad but holy shit! How did this get aired? I know Brett Butler had major issues but the show should have just been cancelled before they filmed this.

The last few minutes are humor-free bloopers of a drugged up looking Brett Butler messing up lines with unamused looking co-stars presumably to get enough material to pad out the run time . There is nothing at all in the way of a running storyline. The first scene alone is so bad. Brett is an enormous coat, hair all oiled back and barely coherent. This was a top 5 show at one point. Was there any reaction to this episode at the time or was the show already forgotten and unwatched by then that it went by unnoticed?

Forgotten and unnoticed pretty much.

I watched this for the first time a few years back. It's incredible that they even put that on the air.

That show was never funny. And none of the actors were remotely believable.

Alan Ball was a writer for the series and has some stories to tell. He was reviewed for the television academy interview series.

That website is an ad-soaked mess and the video image is reversed. Sound is almost nonexistent.

Wasn’t she sexually abusing one of the little kids on the show?

I fell in love with William Fichtner during this show and love him today.

I like him, too, though not in that way. I've never seen that show.

Why did they even air the thing? Just stop with the episode before that. There was no finale either way, and lots of sitcoms just come to a sudden stop.

This is a much better photo of him when is isn't so silly.

Or, this one.

The show's ratings had plummeted, and a notably poor final episode would have just been one more ant at the picnic. People who followed TV news had so much negativity in mind already about Grace Under Fire by early '98: Butler's substance abuse, rehab, relapse; the constant turnover at the production level; cast members leaving and new ones coming in; Butler reportedly exposing herself to one of the child actors (whose parents immediately pulled him from the set).

It made Roseanne's series look like an oasis of serenity.

But yeah, I watched it just now and it's a mess. Butler looks and sounds terrible, and there's obvious desperation to fill time with (probably hastily written) business for the supporting cast. It's a shame. Butler was a funny and sharp comedian at her best, but almost as soon as she "made it," she took a wrecking ball to her career.

Sound was okay for me. Dailymotion can be useful, if you have an ad blocker on your browser and you remember never to click on their "I understand."

Another show that got away, damn it.
