Dad was a philanderer and later a drunk, there's no need to add on to the dysfunction.

He was also an educated man (rare) who supported his friends during McCarthyism at great risk to his own professional reputation.

As a child, Mia almost died of polio and was separated from her family during her illness for months. Her illness was an enormous stressor on her family.

Mia describes her family falling apart when her brother Mike was killed in an airplane crash. He was the bright light in that large family. His death caused a final rift in her parents marriage and irreparable damage to her family.
