I knew. One person packed up the whole family and moved to Tucson for a great-sounding job. In a matter of weeks, they cut their losses. A whole family, just fully relocated to a new city, and it's so bad they didn't even try to stick it out. Another acquaintance back in grad school had worked there briefly, maybe a few months. Oh did she tell me stories. A complete zoo; Lisa and her husband or paramour or whatever and their monster of a child, running along the artists' tables. My friend was sent out to local stores to look at their stock and steal ideas.

My experience was very brief, I was sent there as a temp for one day, 20 years ago or so. I was at the front reception desk. All I remember was there was a big note taped in front of me, "If Mr. So-and-So calls, do NOT put him through to anyone! Put him in voicemail!" Okay, I can do that, especially as it is the only clear instruction I've been given. Flash forward to end of my first day: Someone hustles up to me and asks me if I had any calls from Mr. So-and-So. When I say yes and that I followed the instructions on the note, they went into a mini-huff, snorting and exhaling, because you see, I needed to put that call through to someone, that person is very important!!! Not a big deal in the scheme of things, but it was such a ridiculous response I took it for the red flag that it was (they were literally having this fit while facing this large vehement note that had been left for me).

So in Tucson, yes, we knew. They were legendary as possibly the worst, most batshit employer in town.

FWIW don't be fooled by Canyon Ranch either.

I am the person who brought up Canyon Ranch. Rather than go into the whole thing: the Zuckermans are not good people. Their adult children are also awful, but so effed up in two different ways that I doubt they are even marginally competent to take over. Son is nasty spoiled pothead. Daughter is a real piece of work--snarling nastiness, probably in a lavender marriage complete with sketchy adoption of child who last I heard was running amok in the dining room while her aging grandparents failed to control her; their daughter doesn't seem like she was at all interested in having a kid to begin with.

On the CR history/local reputation: Orgies and drug parties; driving contractors out of business by withholding payment until they take ANOTHER big job (when they were getting the place built); culture of bullying and fear from the top down. Facilities department head made contractors hired to work on property, do work at his house. It was just understood. A paving company owner once literally handed me an envelope with a bribe for this manager. Timeclock tampering/wage theft, sexual harrassment. A friend was a limo driver who would sometimes be called there; once they called him, bundled an elderly guest into his limo, and told him to take the man to a hospital. Friend realized on the way the man was having a heart attack. They knew, they didn't want to call an ambulance--bad optics. One woman, head of a department, got on someone's bad side and they went after her, destroying her career path. She committed suicide.

Just don't buy the hype, it's not a nice place, not nice people, incredibly exploitative. If you are ever a guest, you might assume from their 'no tipping' policy that the employees are paid well. They are not.

Lisa Frank has been known to be very eccentric (as well as very borderline). She's had multiple cosmetic surgeries and either she's had a botched procedure or didn't age well which is one of the main reasons why she won't appear on camera these days. She's nearly 70.

Her products were ubiquitous in the 90's. Even as a small child in primary school I coveted those school supplies. My grandparents wouldn't get them for me because they were for girls even though they got me Barbie and Ken dolls before.

I know her art is kitsch and basically considered by most to be like a more colorful version of Thomas Kinkade art for kids but I have fond 90's kid memories of that stuff.

Last night, I was up watching TV and a commercial for these Lisa Frank Blend Jet products came on. The articles mentioned that LF tried to cash in on hipsters and nostalagia some years back. They are probably attempting it again.
