Because it was”the motion picture that was made because America demanded it!”

The original movie wasn't a box office smash. It was one of those 90s kids movies that gained popularity through cable airings and VHS rentals.

[quote] "The original movie wasn't a box office smash."
Correct. It didn't help that it was released during the summer, as opposed to capitalizing on the Halloween theme, with an Autumn release. I remember my cousin discussing it at my grandmother's annual summer picnic. He said it was "alright".
I like the original quite a bit, though I can't remember when I first saw it.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 27, 2022 1:05 AM |
Today anything with even a hint of brand value is exploited to the nth degree. The first was a small movie that became more popular on cable and in video rentals. Bette had come off her string of 1980s hits and For the Boys had underperformed. SJP was in her supporting actress phase and Kathy Najimy was grabbing what she could after her career high of Sister Act. They were more than the sum of their parts.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 27, 2022 1:44 AM |
I live in Salem, MA. We are already over it. Note: Kathy Najimy while filming here did a very charming taped welcome greeting to incoming Freshman at Salem State University. Love her.

The original has nice fall new england footage. Beyond that… it’s a little meh. But generation britney worships mediocrity.

I don't think the original is mediocre at all. It's aged well and is still good fun.

I wonder how much they make on the marketing side of Hocus Pocus. It's kind of a year round thing, though it really ramps up in the Fall, obviously.
Must be a LOT.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 30, 2022 11:30 AM |
The original film IIRC was released in the summer. Was not a shock that it flopped in original release. I still remember the heavy marketing.
Subsequent seasonal airings on places like Disney Channel and ABC Family (subsequent Freeform) made it a beloved holiday fixture, much like how It’s A Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story also became beloved seasonal classics despite indifference during their original releases.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 30, 2022 11:35 AM |
And I will also add, the original is not a good movie and was critically panned for its hyperactive and grating tone. But it had a wonderful fall and New England atmosphere which won it affection during autumn viewing.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 30, 2022 11:48 AM |
The original was a good movie. That's why it was able to find its audience years later.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 30, 2022 11:53 AM |
It's funny that Kathy Najimy was the biggest box office draw in 1993 following Sister Act, which Bette turned down. SJP had Honeymoon in Vegas (flop) and Bette had For the Boys...

Is it gay heresy to say that Kathy Najimy is funnier than Bette?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 30, 2022 12:01 PM |
R16 Nope. She was the funniest one in the original.
Bette was funny in First Wives Club though.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 30, 2022 12:05 PM |
It's a cult classic that endured time. It's been a seasonal fixture on Disney Channel and later ABC Family/Freeform for over three decades. Plus there aren't that many Halloween movies in comparison in Christmas movies. Disney horror/fantasy movies tend to be quite a lot of fun like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Escape from Witch Mountain, Halloweentown, The Haunted Mansion, Under Wraps, Phantom of the Megaplex and Tower of Terror.

And let's not even get into the new morality that seems as if it was lifted from 70s thrillers that gave warning to this sort of mob mentality...
It was probably predictable with the extended weight of all things nostalgia and the waves of celebrity hasbeen deaths, which they threw themselves on the ground, screaming it was worse than losing their own parents. . . Millennials are at peak denial of being old and becoming the establishment.. so, they're desperate for escapism because they and Z have even worse war fatigue than this whole russian and insurrection business. no generation before has ever suffered as much as they have been thru.. so, why shouldn't childhood be extended indefinitely?

[quote] Millennials are at peak denial of being old and becoming the establishment.
No, millennials are the first demographic to have been heavily marketed to as a consumer with buying power. They were the first generation with cable television and entertainment marketed 24 hours to them. Hocus Pocus 2 is about millennials claiming the establishment, not denying it.

Apparently, according to IMDB's trivia page, the theater release of the original was pushed for a summer release to not compete with Disney's other Halloween movie that year, Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas.
Just watched the sequel and it's, well, ok. The camp feels forced and the new cast members are not up to the task. The teenage girls (one of them is on the new Gossip Girl) are rather bland and can't do comedy well. SJP, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy are delightful, of course, and you do get a sense that they enjoy being back. And they do get to perform a fun Blondie song (One way or another).
SPOILER ....
I suppose there is a big foreshadowing plot device at the beginning when Hannah Waddingham's character warns the sisters to not try a certain spell from the book. She doesn't say it out loud, but I assume she did that spell and that is why she's alone.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 30, 2022 9:49 PM |

It was a big, fat "meh". What made the original so special was that it didn't shy away from disturbing imagery and storylines despite being a kid's movie. The children behaved and struggled like children against what were literally demonic forces. This one is three broody kids who act like they have a mortgage to pay up against a trio of quirky old ladies who may randomly break into song at any given moment. I guess that's just the reality of our zeitgeist where children are so wise and so enlightened and so perfect and must NEVER grapple with themselves or face any serious hardships.
And honestly, it's 2022 and they are still pushing the #corporatefeminist and #girlboss stuff? The Sanderson Sisters are serial child murderers, but of course we had to be treated to a generic "misunderstood female villain fighting back against the patriarchy" origin story. I'm gonna say it again: These. Are. Serial. Child. Murderers.

I just realized this movie unlike the original have no "bad guys" ( the first one have the bullies ) . I thought the mayor would be one but he ended to be another harmless one dimensional character.
And there is no romantic connection between the characters too while Max and Allison relationship was a main plot in the first one.
r64 There is a movement in filmmaking right now where the traditional female antagonist will be portrayed as somewhat nicer. You can see it in the latest Cinderella movie where the stepmother were not only nicer but even cared for Cinderella wellbeing . Its part of the "women must uplift each other" thing.
The prettiest thing in this movie is Froy but he's sadly wasted.
I like the quick "breaking the fifth wall" scene where a gay couple watching the first Hocus Pocus.

R74 not the Disney+ exclusives ( mostly Star Wars and Marvel shows). They "share" in the sense that anything that went to the theaters will generally be on a cable provider and if that cable provider streams those movies will be on that streaming app. Hulu lets you piggy back off of their base plan such that you can add Disney+ for $1.99 . In general if you are not a Disney animation , Star Wars, or Marvel fan, Disney+ is very bad as streaming services go.
IDK why the hell Morbius is on Netflix though.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | October 3, 2022 12:45 PM |
Maybe in a few years it will end up on the Freeform cable channel (that Disney also owns), as that is where the original Hocus Pocus basically runs constantly in the early fall (and where the popularity of it over the years built, with VHS/DVD before that). But until then, it will probably definitely be a Disney+ exclusive for awhile.

Watched an interview with Bette, Kathy, and SJP on Good Morning America or something, and the interviewer mentioned the witches were creepier in the first movie. That's exactly what worked about the original, and exactly why the sequel falls so short. On paper, the story actually isn't all that bad but the visuals were flat and cheap and the ad-libbed asides by the sister witches were all over the place and not in character. Bette was the only one 100% committed and whatever magic the sequel has to offer comes from her only. I have more respect for her than ever. SJP was especially bad. I felt like I was watching a commercial or a clip that would be shown as an extra in a Disney park.

What does SJP do (or fail to do) that doesn't recapture the character?
by Anonymous | reply 84 | October 3, 2022 8:16 PM |
R84 Difficult to put into words what SJP got wrong, but one review described the sequel's Sarah as "less embarrassingly coquettish" which gets pretty close to a satisfyingly concise description. In HP, Sarah was an ethereal ditz-- sexy, but arguably the creepiest of the three. Even as the hag in the beginning of the original, she had a girlishness that worked for the character. In HP2 she's been totally de-sexed. None of her mannerisms are the same, and neither is her speaking voice. In an interview she did after HP had just been released, SJP said she was disappointed to see how much of her character didn't make it into the final film so I think that hang-up, combined with her increased status as a major player over the last three decades made her over compensate and act "bigger" resulting in a characterization that bore little to no resemblance to the original. She talks about HP as if she barely remembers filming it so I wouldn't be surprised if she watched the movie the day before filming started for the sequel and decided to wing it. You can tell just by looking at her that she's not occupying the same headspace that Bette was able to tap into and Kathy did a decent job of recapturing.

[quote]Black people exist you know? And New England has a lot of black people too, shocking, I know. I don't think it has many Hispanics or Asians yet.
New England, which consists of the states of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Connecticut, is 74% white (80% if you count white Hispanics).
Latinos are the biggest minority group at 10%.
Blacks are only 7%.
Thus, lots of all-white towns/schools and 'token' minorities.
I grew up in central Mass. in the '80s and '90s and we only had one black family in the area. Even today, my hometown is 97% white.
In short, the country is not as diverse as has been currently portrayed by Hollywood films/shows, where everyone seems to have family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, etc. who are black/white/Asian/Latino/what-have-you.

And black New Englanders do exist mainly in the Boston metro area and in Connecticut which is part of the NYC metro area. Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire are very white though. And there's many historically black rural Southern, Mid-Atlantic, Midwestern and Californian towns. But the point is black, Hispanic and Asian people have been in The US an extremely long time even longer than most white Americans who descend from immigrants that came at the turn of the 20th century.

I remember reading that Hocus Pocus was going to be a big budget, sci-fi, summer popcorn movie; their Terminator 2.

[quote] [R92] Froy is not here for his acting prowess but for his BEAUTY. Thats all.
R107 Of course. But tell that to the fans and fraus...😉
[quote] [R97] Great now in my head I imagine headless Billy Butcherson plucking Froy sweet cherry hole right in middle of the street.
R107 Damn. If only we got that version. 😜

Watch out, he'll be moving on to character roles like Cyrano de Bergerac.

Growing up he was bullied by the very macho boys.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | October 8, 2022 12:51 AM |
What happened to all the Froy threads? You search for them, then click, and it’s like the whole website blows up?
by Anonymous | reply 119 | October 8, 2022 1:32 AM |
R118 I thought they bullied him because they thought his rich father was part of the cartel?
by Anonymous | reply 120 | October 8, 2022 1:54 AM |
R119 I've noticed that. Like a good handful of threads that were really active are just gone. Another one this morning. Is something going on? Are we not allowed to talk about him anymore? His PR team cracking down?
by Anonymous | reply 121 | October 8, 2022 2:09 AM |
It’s gay Froy ERASURE I tell you! ERASURE!
by Anonymous | reply 122 | October 8, 2022 2:23 AM |

The racial makeup of the city of Salem is 81.5% White, 4.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.7% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.6% of the population (9.1% Dominican, 2.9% Puerto Rican, 0.5% Mexican, 0.3% Guatemalan).
The casting was interesting.

by Anonymous | reply 131 | October 8, 2022 5:04 AM |
R131 They went out of their way to cast an equally annoying as ugly POC.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | October 8, 2022 6:04 AM |
r111, take it up with the trolls constantly triggered by the sight of visible non-whites (especially blacks) in movies/television. These snowflakes are seriously breaking down the racial demographics so they can cry about there being too many 'others' in a FICTIONAL children's movie about WITCHES that they were NEVER going to watch. These crybabies won't be happy until all roles in movies and TV are played by the straight, white Christian, conservative Chads that they jerk their puny little cocklette to.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | October 8, 2022 6:22 AM |
Froy is the only attractive actor in this film. Even the one who plays his gf is only average, and the rest are plain to horrendous, ie SJP.

[quote] Growing up he was bullied by the very macho boys.
R118 Not surprised. He's naturally quite fem. If you've seen pics of him as a kid, you can tell he was probably picked on.
The rest of the article is interesting...like they're trying to over-intellectualize the 'dumb jock/himbo' character he plays. I mean, it's not that hard to figure out, and I'm sure it doesn't require that much as an actor. 😂
Also, I thought this line from the article was quite ironic - “I see myself as a very geeky, awkward, shy person and I’m constantly playing these macho boys who are struggling with their relation to masculinity,” he says. “They’re overcompensating or they’re working very hard to put this masculine idea of themselves out there and that’s something I’ve never really done.”

Is he coming out as a bottom?
by Anonymous | reply 136 | October 8, 2022 6:42 AM |

I saw a Spanish interview of him and couldn't believe how over-the-top femmy he was, constantly gesturing. Maybe that's related to the language.

R138 You mean this one -
by Anonymous | reply 139 | October 8, 2022 7:09 AM |
He’s a proud bottom and he won’t hide that. He won’t post his top on instagram though or talk about him in interviews.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | October 8, 2022 7:21 AM |
A pleasant sequel, but twenty minutes too long with not enough focus, I still have to finish it. And I wish all the Froy people here (probably just one poster, really) got the fuck off DL already.

No that’s his real mannerism and speak. He has been told to butch it up for his career. He’s Madden’s bottom for sure. Nothing wrong with it.

Can the fucking weirdos endlessly speculating about the childhood of the eighth lead in this movie take their conversation to one of the many OCD spectrum threads about this guy? This movie has a lot of interest on here and it’s killing this thread.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | October 9, 2022 8:52 AM |
R147 No it doesn’t , Froy is the only interesting thing about this silly movie, besides old Bette.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | October 9, 2022 8:57 AM |
It's good like the Halloweentown movies (minus the fourth one which sucked due to the lead actress from the first three films being unnecessarily recast).

by Anonymous | reply 161 | October 9, 2022 3:55 PM |
Yes I am certainly aware of the AMC version of Interview with the Vampire. I should have clarified that I was referring to a remake of the original film, to which the tv show does not bear much resemblance.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | October 9, 2022 7:57 PM |
R147 forgets she’s among gay men. Froyilicous bottom boytoy Froy Gutierrez is the only reason to see this trainwreck. Good old Bette tries her earnest best to save this movie but the old gal can’t work miracles.

"It's streaming on Disney+. Not in theaters."
Isn't this a sad reflection of what the movie industry has become?
20 years ago, a movie like this, with this much hype due to its predecessor, would've had a big H'Wood premiere with trailers all over television.
The three leads would get big, gross-number percentages of the box office, etc.
Now, it's on the 21st century equivalent of basic cable.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | October 11, 2022 9:12 AM |
R164 Honestly, yes. You're absolutely right. They did have somewhat of a big premiere, surprisingly, but nothing like what it would have been decades ago for something with this kind of following. Nothing is what it used to be.
