New Italian Prime Minister

She uses all the typical fascist dog whistles, with LGBT being a huge scapegoat, as usual:

"Yes to the natural family, no to the LGBT lobby, yes to sexual identity, no to gender ideology... no to Islamist violence, yes to secure borders, no to mass migration... no to big international finance... no to the bureaucrats of Brussels!"

American Conservative twitter is all in unanimous support, of course.

She gives a speech about the "integrity of the family" and of course the GOP pretends this isn't shaded language for "we hate gays because they're coming for our kids."

by Anonymousreply 1September 26, 2022 10:14 PM

The right is offended she's being called fascist.

by Anonymousreply 2September 26, 2022 10:15 PM

She seems lovely. /s

by Anonymousreply 3September 26, 2022 10:16 PM

R4, Thanks Ted Cruz

Your teeny, tiny brain, R4

by Anonymousreply 6September 26, 2022 10:19 PM

Globalist billionaires hate her of course. They want to turn the world into a dystopia they control.

by Anonymousreply 7September 26, 2022 10:19 PM

All the things she mentions is to distract you from the fact that the economy is in the sewer and she has no solution for it.

by Anonymousreply 8September 26, 2022 10:19 PM

The typical: Look over there!

by Anonymousreply 9September 26, 2022 10:20 PM

Linda, is that you at r4?

We must expose our vapid ignorance.

by Anonymousreply 11September 26, 2022 10:20 PM

Fascism never works out well.

by Anonymousreply 12September 26, 2022 10:20 PM

If you disagree with her on everything, then you're saying:

"No to the natural family, Yes to the LGBT lobby, No to sexual identity, Yes to gender ideology... Yes to Islamist violence, No to secure borders, Yes to mass migration... Yes to big international finance... Yes to the bureaucrats of Brussels!"

by Anonymousreply 13September 26, 2022 10:25 PM

No, R13, you're saying that you see through her diversions, propaganda, and general bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 14September 26, 2022 10:28 PM

None of those are binary choices, R13. Just fascist othering.

by Anonymousreply 15September 26, 2022 10:28 PM

Who is this woman?

I don't know this woman?

by Anonymousreply 16September 26, 2022 10:30 PM

Because it worked out so well the last time Italy embraced Fascism...

by Anonymousreply 17September 26, 2022 10:33 PM

The LGBT "Lobby" is just asking for equal rights. THAT is what fascists are resisting

by Anonymousreply 18September 26, 2022 10:35 PM

The future is Authoritarian govt, period. Citizens get to choose what type: Fascism or Corporatism.

by Anonymousreply 19September 26, 2022 10:40 PM

I'm not surprised by the anti lgbt, Italy always has been low key homophobic against gay men.

by Anonymousreply 20September 26, 2022 10:48 PM

This happens because people refuse to recognise the issues people are concerned with. While it may seem that the majority of people need to deal with pronouns and Trans lobby, most people are straight and believe in families. As a Gay man I realise that I am a minority. You don’t lecture the majority and not expect a backlash.

You want to ignore the fears over immigration and globalisation and then yell bigot when people vote out people who don’t address it, go your hardest.

I have no idea how Italians feel but I certainly know in the last 10 years I have become totally disillusioned with Leftist bullshit. I can only imagine what the majority feel.

by Anonymousreply 27September 26, 2022 10:59 PM

Fascists don't like being called out.

They have no facts to defend themselves against their own history of bloodshed, murder and death.

Fascists have caused tens of millions of deaths in Europe. Hitler. Mussoliini. Ceaucescu. Erdogan. Franco. Stalin. And the list goes on.

TENS UPON TENS OF MILLIONS DEAD due to fascism.

But keep blaming the "brown" people.

You'll see what you get. And you'll deserve ALL OF IT, Europeans.

by Anonymousreply 28September 26, 2022 11:00 PM

Hey, FUCKING CUNT Meloni.

Prepare for your future.

When those ignorant Italians finally see you for who you are, you'll end up just like your predecessor Mussolini.

I can't wait!

I want to see her drag through the streets by wild horses.

Europe always has to learn the hard way, that fascism and authoritarianism is NEVER then answer.

TENS OF MILLIONS DEAD in the 1930's and 1940's because of Europe's turn to fascism.

Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, etc.

Genocide and death. That's all that fascism has brought to the world.

But if this is what Europeans want, then let them have it. And all that comes along with it.

Europeans DESERVE what they get.

by Anonymousreply 30September 26, 2022 11:01 PM

Let's just ignore what's been going on in Ukraine for MONTHS.

Ukraine has tons of white supremacists, but it's funny how there's no mention of their white attackers, or their white invaders, or the white people murdering and raping their people.

Yeah. But keep blaming the brown people, Europeans.

You always need someone to blame. EXCEPT FOR YOURSELVES.

by Anonymousreply 31September 26, 2022 11:02 PM

R29, and R30 You both seem very angry. Are you Italian?

[quote] This happens because people refuse to recognise the issues people are concerned with. While it may seem that the majority of people need to deal with pronouns and Trans lobby, most people are straight and believe in families.

None of that dominates left ideas. The right keeps amplifying this to make people think this is all the left talks about.

Everyone is concerned about inflation and the economy. You know the right has NO remedy when it keeps hammers on these supposed cultural issues.

Trans is 0.6% of the population. The right pretends it's 50%.

All the others have turned to right-wing fascism at one point or another.

Something about Europeans that they just lean towards hatred and fear.

by Anonymousreply 36September 26, 2022 11:06 PM

R36 Don't tell Europeans what to think.

by Anonymousreply 37September 26, 2022 11:09 PM

The Centre-right UK Spectator on Meloni this week:

"The Italian media, which is mostly left-leaning, usually call both Meloni, her party and her coalition centrodestra rather than 'destra', a word which the Italians apply to actual extremists. That ought to make the outside world think twice before describing Meloni as the heir to Mussolini. That’s not to say the Italian media is well-disposed to her – most of them are not. They are just forced to be more accurate, given that their readers can see and hear every day what Meloni and Brothers of Italy are doing and saying. Italians know through experience who is and is not a fascist."

[quote]Two more suspects have been arrested in connection to a deadly shooting during the Norwegian capital’s annual LGBTQ Pride festival

[quote]ABC News

COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Two more suspects have been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting during the Norwegian capital’s annual LGBTQ Pride festival, police said Monday. The total number of suspects is now at four.

A 42-year-old Norwegian citizen originally from Iran was arrested shortly after the June shootings in Oslo’s nightlife district that killed two people and wounded more than 20. A second Norwegian man in his 40s is being sought, police said Friday.

On Monday, police said two more suspects — a man in his 40s with Somali citizenship and a Norwegian national in his 30s — were arrested Sunday. Both are known to the police, authorities said, adding that they are residents of Oslo.

They faces preliminary charges of “complicity in an act of terrorism,” police said.

The suspect who has not yet been detained, Arfan Bhatti, is believed to be in Pakistan. Norwegian police said that, “to ensure the best possible cooperation with the Pakistani authorities, we had officials from the Oslo police district in Pakistan a short time ago. ”

Bhatti allegedly posted online statements about killing gay people. Media reports said he knew Zaniar Matapour, the main suspect in the June 25 attack that the Norwegian Police Security Service has called an “Islamist terror act.”

Matapour who according to Norwegian media arrived in Norway with his family from a Kurdish part of Iran in the 1990s, faces preliminary charges of murder and attempted murder.

The names of the suspects arrested Sunday were not given.

It’s kind of ironic that “family” is one of her platforms in light of Italy’s aged population and low birth rate, which is tied with Japan. The only people having babies are those pesky migrants…

by Anonymousreply 117September 28, 2022 10:15 AM

A HUGE percentage of young Italians fresh out of college leave Italy to find work. Just not enough jobs for them. So the end result is immigrants doing grunt work and lots of old people who want to live in the past. Oddly, the Catholic Church participation is way, way down. Younger people under 45 not going anymore. Outsiders think of Italy as super Catholic but it's not that anymore. Yes, lots of churches and architecture but it's all ancient history not current society. It's full of Grandmas or as they say, Nonnas.

by Anonymousreply 118September 28, 2022 10:33 AM

[quote] Oddly, the Catholic Church participation is way, way down. Younger people under 45 not going anymore.

Belief in Europe is an integral part of the culture. In Italy as in France, if you are not Catholic you are not considered Italian or French. Patricipation in the accepted trappings of belief, e.g., church, is irrelevant to the milliennium of culturally-entrenched belief.

If that's fascist, then Obama and Hilary were fascists for most of their lives. Same with Biden. Same with saying immigration must be lowered. Hilary in 2008 (I believe) is on video calling for a border barrier, on Obama/Biden actually BUILT one!

The Brothers of Italy Party have roots in neo-fascism--mainly around nationalism.

This exactly what fascism is--pushing nationalism and, often race, above the individual.

Nowadays, it's about talking in shaded language and using seemingly innocuous words like "family" and "culture" to actually mean ending rights and pushing out others

by Anonymousreply 130September 28, 2022 6:20 PM

So? The Democrat party has its roots in the KKK. So much so, that Democrat Party "Great Man" Senator Robert Byrd, who was lauded by Clinton, Obama and Biden at his funeral, was originally voted in when he was publicly at the top leadership of the KKK.

By your logic, r129 all Democrat politicians are members of the KKK because the party was founded and originally formed by people who supported the KKK. See how that works?

Doesn't work that way AT ALL. The Dems today don't talk in shaded language about repressing Blacks. They have left their racist background behind. The Brothers in Italy still keep their nationalistic stance and blame their country's problems on outsiders.

And, no, all Democratic politicians weren't members of the KKK. The Southern Democrats were conservative and racist. They ultimately became the base of today's Republican party. See how that works?

by Anonymousreply 134September 28, 2022 8:57 PM

That "The party switched places" bit is most a-historical pathetic cope I've ever heard. No they didn't.

Also, it's not good enough.

By your own earlier 'logic', any adherent of any party is forever guilty by association to the foundations of that party. Which means Democrats are all KKK-adjacent. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

[quote] That "The party switched places" bit is most a-historical pathetic cope I've ever heard. No they didn't. Also, it's not good enough.

Except that's exactly what happened. President Johnson predicted as much when he signed the Civil Rights Law--he famously said, Democratic Party may “have lost the South for a generation.” And he was right.

Until then, the South was reliably Democrat...and then it turned Republican

No, you're not following the logic. The Italian Party she represents STILL clings to its views about immigrants and such. There has been no real change except that it has softened it's language for a modern world to gain votes.

Dems have completely changed and become the champion of minority groups.

"Verdict: True

While the landmark act received a majority of support from both parties, a greater percentage of Republicans voted in favor of the bill. Throughout the 1950s and ’60s, Republicans were generally more unified than Democrats in support of civil rights legislation, as many Southern Democrats voted in opposition."

No to the LGBTQ lobby? I'm a gay man being erased by trans, so I'm not to supportive of the LGBTQ lobby as a whole.

No to Islamist violence? How is that "fascist" when the Islamists themselves are genuine fascists?

Yes to secure borders, no to mass migration? How is having borders "fascist"?

No to big international finance? How is that fascist when the original definition of fascism is a merging of government with corporatism?

No to the EU control? Guess what, The EU is an undemocratic ruling organisation. Being against the EU is hardly "fascist".

Spencer and other white supremacists have a long history of purposely adopting their opponents’ causes and pretending to back them in order to undermine them. That’s exactly what Spencer did in 2018.

Sorry, r217, both Duke and Spencer are Biden voters.

Why not just rape it while you can, make all the money you can as a politician flushing it down the toilet for personal gain. Thats what she is really doing.

I don’t know why I loath the Left as much as I do but I do. I used to define myself as mostly Left, even 7 years ago and desperately wanted Hillary to win. Now I feel like I have been freed from a Gulag of the mind and am so much happier.

Leftist’s are all about freedom and love until you disagree, then you are every four letter word they can think of. They fall over themselves creating new and more extreme words to define those they disagree with. You can’t just be Centre or Conservative you are extreme Right Wing , extreme Fascist, Nazi , White Supremacist. If you are Black and vote the wrong way you are an Uncle Tom, “ Only superficially Black “,as a Labour MP in Britain recently found out cost her suspension when she said this about the Conservative Chancellor.

Each frothing insult showing much gaslighting this supposed freedom and loving people really are. Full of hate and loathing. So sad and obvious that they can’t grasp that many Gay people, women, people of Colour are saying “ fuck this shit” and thinking the same way as me. So sad.

by Anonymousreply 254September 29, 2022 3:08 AM

R254 is the Euro Trash version of "I used to be a Democrat but...." finished by classic Troll rhetoric.

Step 1: I used to be just like you, very liberal, left.

Step 2: Paint them as intolerant of others opinion and use that to justify switching sides to a party that doesn't even pretend to be tolerant of anything.

Step 3: Play victim as a snow flake who can dish it out but cant take it. Support a party or leader that calls people names like "sleepy Joe, or Brandon" then whine when it's returned in kind.

Step 4: Summarize with a false conclusion about how the good people on the left are not perfect and therefore joining the evil party on the right is the only logical choice.

It means nothing, you don’t know me. You can’t push me into a box politically just because you say I am a particular political persuasion

The point I am illustrating, which you are kindly helping me prove is that everyone you yell as Nazis or Fascist are basically people like me who have become disillusioned with the Left. They see you never have constructive solutions, just names and hate. That is sad. It doesn’t upset me in the slightest, it just makes me feel sorry for such hate filled people.

I was born Gay, but I was not born a Leftist. It took me a while for me to realise that is ok. I am in good company.

The point I am trying to illustrate

No you missed the point entirely. No one said anything about calling YOU names. The name calling reference was about politicians calling other politicians names like 5 year old kids in a sand box. They don't all do this, lets not play that game. Biden, Obama even Bush never did this. But look at Trump, everyone he hated he has some childish name for. If you support someone that acts that childish and you are ok with that childish behavior form an adult, it says a lot about your lack of values and integrate with rearguards to voting for someone to rule the country.

In other words you are comfortable with a childish adult who controls nuclear weapons and the military in power. I find that disturbing.

R258 - it’s cute that you think THEY think being gay is separate from all that. If you’re gay, they don’t like you. Maybe they won’t outright change laws, but what governments like this do instead is marginalize in other ways. Like change rules on accessing social funding so that lgbt+ groups and initiatives lose funding. And then shift that funding to religious based groups. It happened, for example, under Stephen Harper in Canada, and he’s a liberal compared to her. I wish people wouldn’t get sucked in by single issues voting.

Italy is a major economy, it has obligations and responsibilities that a country like Hungary does not have. Italy is expecting billions in Covid relief from the EU. Meloni can't jeopardize that. Even if she wanted to carry out extreme measures, she can't. In the end it'll be another conservative government. And Italian governments come and go.

by Anonymousreply 306September 29, 2022 9:20 PM

“Only a republican would say "There are good people on both sides" when one side is literally Nazis”r275

You do realise the Nazis were a very specific group at a very specific time centred around a very specific person. That person died in 1945.

This continuous laziness is not only stupid and corrosive it is allowing us to believe that one of the worst things to occur in history is common place. It means when you are confronted with something that extreme you actually have run out of words to describe it and are going to find it difficult to make others believe how bad it actually is.

Are there extreme Right Wing elements?, yes. Are they the majority ? No . If you say yes, you can never make people believe in something really evil, because you have used up all your credibility.

The demonstration in Charlottesville was vile, but to believe it is common, you have proven it is not. The fact we all know what you mean shows how uncommon it is. Do you really think if there were Nazis everywhere we would remember just one demonstration?

I am pretty sure that Divorce is a much bigger sin in the Bible than being gay mentioned only once in the same breath of not mixing certain fabrics.

Luke 16:18 “Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery."

Corinthians 7:10-11 "the wife should not separate from her husband (but if she does, she should remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband),"

So this bitch has the nerve to pass judgment on gay people but it's perfectly ok for her to go on and on about family while she openly breaks Christian law? Why does she get a pass on how the modern world works but with gays they must be bound by some quote 2,000 years ago? Worst of all, she wants to be a law maker. Fake news= we don't believe in facts. Pay no attention to facts. Only my feelings matter.

Declaring victory when you're leading in an election and before ALL VOTES ARE COUNTED= If I feel that I am the winner that is all that counts.

Making a baby outside of marriage then screaming you are a good Christian devoted to reestablishing your country as a Christian one= . I am anointed by God himself and can do as I please without censure. Including declaration of victory before all votes are counted

I guess if she scars them away the more right leaning religious countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran and other Muslim tourists is what she is going for. Yeah, good luck with that.🤣🥷🏽🥷🏽🥷🏽💥

Her entire platform is shaded fascism. It's pathetic to claim "She won't do any of that! She doesn't hate gays! The EU won't let her!" and blah. blah, blah.

She will try to do EVERYTHING she says--any attempts at gay marriage will be blocked (although gays will have to pay the same taxes as always). She will vilify minority groups as the cause of all of Italy's problems.

We've seen this same scenario over and over and over.

I remember reading 1984 many times. The author explains the process of how party leadership controls language down to the last syllable ultimately rendering language meaningless.

Up is down. Right is left. Black is white. Day is night. Right is wrong.

"Fake news".

The goal isn't to render language meaningless, the goal is to control all thought and oppose all criticism.

Party members here oppose posting links to sources.

All news is fake if it correctly identifies the problem.

The party members follow up with a disjointed argument "Do you read Italian, I read and speak Italian and live in Italy".

"You don't know what you're talking about, you don't speak or read Italian or live in Italy part-time".

Please observe they have not posted a link to an Italian source that will confirm their opinion.

by Anonymousreply 338September 30, 2022 2:21 PM

MILAN/FRANKFURT (Reuters) - In the weeks after Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Italian energy mni, embarked on a whirlwind of trips to gas suppliers in Africa.

The visits included meetings with officials in Algeria in February plus talks in Angola, Egypt and Republic of Congo in March, with Descalzi often accompanied by senior Rome officials, according to company and government releases.

State-controlled Eni and Italy were able to leverage existing supply relationships with those nations to secure extra gas to replace a large part of the volumes it received from its top supplier Russia.

It's a nimble shift that many European countries have been unable to perform as Vladimir Putin's war jolts the continent into an alternate reality.

Take Germany. An economic powerhouse and long a byword for prudent planning, it has been caught wholly unprepared. It's on the brink of recession, its industry is preparing for gas and power rationing and it has just nationalised a major utility.

You're kidding right?

Before the election, he said he was against gay marriage and would name judges to overturn it--and he has.

His DOJ presented amicus briefs to SCOTUS case. The Briefs were against allowing gays protection from being fired for being gay and for businesses to allow to not provide services to gays.

The most egregious--Trump Executive order allowing health care providers to not treat anyone if it's against their religious view. This is to specifically target LGBT.

Also, it was an absolute lie when the article claims: Before becoming acting director of national intelligence, he led an effort to decriminalize homosexuality in countries where it is illegal.

There is no evidence whatsoever that Grenell did that. In fact when asked what the status of that supposed initiative was, Grenell answered that the State Dept was still discussing it.

I also am beginning to sense a snobbishness because she is working class. Hasn't she been in politics since she was like 17. I'm sure she knows policy and issues. She doesn't need to be an expert on the issues, she needs to know who to call on to share their expertise and try to implement policies the populace wants.

R362 Her background is well known in Italy. It's not like she has come out of nowhere or has no experience. She has had a long carrier in politics. Italians know who she is.

by Anonymousreply 370September 30, 2022 7:32 PM

R369, that's not the contradiction you think it is. Being pregnant makes you realize that babies need mothers, you know, real mothers. Biological mothers. That is a real need for infants. it's not simply cultural.

Also I'm not seeing the fascism in her conservative family views. That's a pretty commonly held belief, even in the US. That doesn't make people fascist. Criticize her all you want for her beliefs you don't agree with but stop with the fascist label. We haven't seen that yet.

Meloni opposes abortion, euthanasia, and laws that recognize same-sex marriage.[95] She has said she "wouldn't change" the abortion law in Italy,[96] and stated that the recognition of same-sex unions in Italy is good enough.[97] At a rally at the Piazza del Popolo in October 2019, she spoke against same-sex parenting; her speech became viral on Italian social media platforms.[98] Meloni is also opposed to the DDL Zan, an anti-homophobia law, declaring that in Italy "there is no homophobia".[99] She had also said that she would "rather not have a gay child" during a Le Iene interview, an Italian television show.[100][101]

Meloni is supportive of the anti-gender movement, a belief born in the mid-1990s in the circles of the Opus Dei in order to condemn any social position other than that approved by the Catholic Church, which oppose gender studies.[102][103][104] She is supportive of changing the Constitution of Italy in order to make it illegal for same-sex couples to adopt children.[105] In March 2018, Meloni criticized The Walt Disney Company for the decision to represent a gay couple in the musical fantasy movie Frozen II, writing on her social networks: "Enough! We are sick of it! Take your hands off the children

A right-wing populist and Italian nationalist, her political positions have been described as far right, which she rejects as a label to describe her views.

She describes herself as a Catholic Christian and a conservative, and says she defends "God, fatherland, and family".

She is opposed to abortion, euthanasia, and to partnerships, marriages, and parenting by same-sex couples, saying that nuclear families are exclusively headed by male–female pairs.

Opposed to the reception of non-European migrants and multiculturalism, she has been accused of xenophobia and Islamophobia.

A supporter of NATO, she maintains Eurosceptic views regarding the European Union, which she describes as Eurorealist, and was in favour of better relations with Russia before the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, which she condemned, pledging to keep sending arms to Ukraine.

R399 There's nothing to contract. But there is plenty to put into context.

Her carrier and background are well known to Italians. They've also seen how the Fratelli D'Italia operates in their communities. And they are impressed.

They've made a choice and have voted for her and what Italians regard as the center right.

But even so, you have to understand that today Italians are a population without any illusions. They're rather cynical about politics and politicians. Meloni will be on trial with the Italians just like any other PM. They are not expecting miracles.

Notice that there has been no calls of irregularities in this election. No protesting in the streets over this election. What does that tell you?

Meloni won in a landslide...and it is not because of voters who traditionally vote for the right, it is because voters on the left have decided to vote for her.

Maybe they know something you don't.

by Anonymousreply 406September 30, 2022 8:26 PM

"many people are saying", it's just an unwed mother with long standing ties to fascism.

by Anonymousreply 407September 30, 2022 8:28 PM

"Unwed mother" does not sound very 'fascist'

by Anonymousreply 408September 30, 2022 9:19 PM

Making a baby outside of marriage, ie: "Fornication" doesn't sound conservative either.

Party members have rules for thee, not for me.

by Anonymousreply 409September 30, 2022 9:25 PM

[quote]Party members have rules for thee, not for me.

What rules for unwed mothers is she proposing?

BTW, just so you know: "in Italy, maternity leave is compulsory and women must take up to two months off from work before her due date and three months off after the baby's birth."

Compulsory.

And: "Fathers are also obligated to take a seven-day paid leave of absence from work during the five months of maternity leave. The mother has the option to extend the father's paternal leave if she transfers one of her maternity days to him."

"During the five-month leave, women are paid up to 80% of their wage ( by the government) but companies usually pay for the remainder 20%."

Now tell me about the US.

You think she's going to change those laws?

And as for Infant mortality rate (number of infants dying before reaching one year of age, per 1,000 live births in a given year.) The US ranks far higher than Italy for number of deaths.

Instead of being so concerned about Italy....and wild claims of "fascism". ......maybe you should be a little more concerned about YOUR country.

Not too bright are you?

Meloni has a daughter, Ginevra, with her partner Andrea Giambruno,[182][183] a journalist who works for Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset TV channel.[184] She has said that she is a Christian and has used her religious identity in part to help build her national brand. In a 2019 speech to a rally in Rome, she said: "I am Giorgia. I'm a woman, I'm a mother, I'm Italian, I'm Christian."[99][185][186] In September 2022, she reportedly continued to embrace the old Italian Fascist slogan "God, fatherland and family". by Anonymousreply 416September 30, 2022 10:04 PM

fascism as defined in dictionaries :

Noun

1.A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

2.A political philosophy or movement based on or advocating such a system of government.

3.Oppressive, dictatorial control.

by Anonymousreply 417September 30, 2022 10:11 PM

Catholics do have children out of wedlock. Has she been excommunicated? Has the Pope commented? Has she denied anything?

And you are going to hell too.

by Anonymousreply 423September 30, 2022 10:27 PM

Thank you r417, and I'll add this based on some readings, although not any kind of lifelong study:

First and foremost, nationalism, tinged with racism. Nations are almost mystic things, bonding people together in some kind of sacred union that has at least something to do with bloodlines and blood relationships. Italy has a pretty short history as an actual nation-state, but clearly the concept of Italians bound together in some way as one people goes well back, sort of into the Roman Empire, but that is of course complicated by the fact that Rome was very much a special city and other Italians were subordinate allies at best. Still, Italian exists as a thing for centuries, even during the Renaissance and all those little city states.

Militarism, the idea that war is actually a good thing, it's how nations test themselves against other nations. You don't necessarily need to hate all other nations, but you are in some sense in competition with them, and you should periodically test yourself against them through war. I'm not sure this has anything to do with modern Italy or will play much of any role in some new "fascist" government.

Authoritarianism. Everything really should be subordinate to your loyalty to the state and its leader. Its okay to have corporations, churches, other organizations, unions as long as everybody understands these are subordinate to the State and its interests (because the state in some way embodies the whole people and attempts to divide the people are bad). Not okay to have different political parties, and Mussolini got rid of those as soon as he could. Also, democracy is emphatically not some ideal. It can occasionally be useful, but there is absolutely no reason to support democracy as an ideal in fascism. Again, not sure how this plays out if at all. A dictatorship? Is that something Meloni could conceivably do? I doubt it. Italian democracy is relatively new, but I don't think it's nearly fragile enough to have somebody come in and simply sweep it away with ease.

Is Meloni a fascist? I don't know. If she is, can she make Italy fascist? I do doubt that. Is she a wingnut dingbat with fake family values, like Trump and the vast majority of Republicans in Congress? That seems somewhat likely actually.

Meloni's opposition to immigration has animated her and her base

In August, Meloni posted a video on social media saying she would introduce a naval blockade to patrol the Mediterranean, to interdict people whom she called "illegal immigrants" from North Africa.

"What is important in the campaign is not the policy itself. It's the message — 'we will stop them at any cost,'" says historian Lorenzo Castellani, a professor at Rome's LUISS University. "She is proposing herself as a sort of defender of the borders, a very Trumpian approach from this point of view," Castellani says, referring to former President Donald Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric and policies.

[R495] This is the definition of Patria:

1.L'ambito territoriale, tradizionale e culturale, cui si riferiscono le esperienze affettive, morali, politiche dell'individuo, in quanto appartenente a un popolo: il suolo, i confini della p.; aver nostalgia della p. lontana; tradire la p.; combattere per la p.

2.Paese di origine di qualcosa (cui si associa o si sostituisce il riferimento a condizioni ambientali che ne favoriscano particolarmente la diffusione o lo sviluppo).

From Collins dictionary re: fatherland: "The word fatherland is particularly associated with Germany."

Oxford Dictionary re: fatherland: "Germany during the period of Hitler's control."

Patria does not have those connotations. See definition at top of post.

If you object to the use of the word "patria" then your quarrel is not with Meloni but with the entire country of Italy, with every Italian newspaper and every television station, with all of Italy's lawmakers and with its people. Because they ALL use the word when referring to ideas connected to the love of Italy.

It is a coalition that wins.

It's not the US with two rivals, dumbass.

Note the headline.

Vince il centrodestra, trionfa la Meloni.

(The center-right wins, Meloni triumphs.)

la coalizione di centrodestra supererebbe il 40%

Pd sotto il 20%,

God you are stupid.

My objection is not with using the word "patria", my objection is using the word "fatherland" for patria which has connotation with Hitler. Patria is commonly used as "my country" and does not have the Nazi era connotations that the word Fatherland has.

Got it now?

R507 There you go again.

Explain to us. How could she win an election with 26% of the votes? How many votes did her rival get?

I'm looking forward to your answer.

Yelling Fascist and Nazi at everyone you disagree with, pushing a Trans agenda where we have 65 genders and a Straight man with a dick can say he is a Lesbian and then call a woman who won’t sleep with him a Transphobe. Pushing a Leftist agenda and a Globalist world view and saying every illegal immigrant is as pure as the driven snow . Pushing the Gay Agenda and having nothing to do with real Gay rights are just some of the reasons you have Meloni. If you can’t even accept that there is no point in having a discussion. …. Communist….. Stalinist. See how that fucking works hypocrites.

The ignorant American using google translate for every one of his comments isn't convincing anyone.

She's a standard conservative in Italy. Sorry. I know you want and need her to be fascist, but she's not: her policies are straight down the line Italian conservative, with a touch of Eurosceptism.
