Audrey was just as talented and iconic but people seem to like Marilyn more.
Why is Marilyn Monroe more beloved than Audrey Hepburn?

I think Audrey’s beauty and body type isn’t really appreciated nowadays. Marilyn’s is.

Marilyn was sexy and vulnerable.

Marilyn died in her mid 30s. Audrey lived until her 60s dying of cancer. Not quite as romantic as an overdose of nebutol and vodka.

It's a waste of time to compare the two; both are legendary actresses, who are remembered decades after their deaths.

R5 Audrey is obviously loved but I feel like the adoration for her has faded in recent years while Marilyn is more popular than ever.

Monroe wasn't a twee twig.

People feel bad for Marilyn. She was a victim. Audrey was a survivor.

I don't know if Monroe is "beloved." I think she's pitied more than anything else.

Young Audrey Hepburn fans, who are mostly young women, really only know Audrey from one film-- "Breakfast at Tiffany's," the precursor to that other female fan favorite flick, "Pretty Woman."
I think Marilyn is mostly known for her tragic story than any film performance she's ever given.

MM’s life had more drama in it, which has kept her high profile through the ages.
AH, for all her style and charm, is a bit prissy. She’ll never lack for fans… it’s just that MM’s life played out on more epic proportions.

Is that a Beaton photo? Or an Avedon imitates Beaton photo?
Beaton had a photo shoot with Monroe. That night he wrote in his diary, 'This will end in tears.'

MM should have played Holly

I’ve just read the book “Fifth Avenue, 5 a.m.” about the making of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. According to sources quoted in the book, Hepburn didn’t think she had any acting technique. She thought she had instinct and nerve that got her through her film roles. She admitted that her greatest performance, The Nun’s Story was due to editing. The director Fred Zinnemann spliced a performance together in the editing room. Monroe also began her career based on a shallow dependency on her looks and baby doll voice but was determined to make herself into a better actress. They both had a physical appeal. Hepburn’s was based on style and chic and Monroe’s was based on a tremulous appeal.

Theater fans were and are still outraged Audrey accepted My Fair Lady when she did not have the voice for it. She's great as Eliza until she opens her mouth to "sing". Isn't it a MUSICAL? Maybe she should have starred in a film version of PYGMALION.

Monroe is a icon in herself, Hepburn is iconic only as Holly Golightly, a role Capote intended for Monroe. Her early death (like James Deans) secured Monroe’s status in the public collective memory. I personally prefer Hepburn, and am sometimes mistified at Monroe’s adoration. But apparently no one can resist a beautiful corpse. Neither was a particularly good actress.

R18 Audrey was limited but I think she was a good actress, especially in Sabrina and Two for the Road.

I also think she’s very good in Breakfast at Tiffany’s but I don’t care much for the movie. It’s unfortunate that’s her most iconic role when she’s had better ones.

R19, you are right, i was a little harsh on her and i find her charming. I love her in Charade.

Wait Until Dark. - Audrey was really good in that, as the champion blind lady.

Marilyn knew it was all about Eve so she crossed over the asphalt jungle and didn't both to knock as she went over the great Niagra.
After conquering the river of no return she waited at the local bus stop where she was promptly picked up by a monkey in the business. He rudely told her "Gentleman prefer blondes, honey" so, according to her maid, Marilyn subsequently bleached "down there", which unfortunately gave her a 7-year itch. She responsibly informed her lovers of this but most liked it hot anyway and declared let's make love sugartits!
However, something had to give for this Hollywood misfit, even though there's no business like show business and you're as young as you feel, she finally went out in a fireball after clash by night with RFK!

The two can't be compared. They exist in two entirely different universes. Hepburn was a pretty good actress and a great humanitarian. She had one (maybe) iconic role -- Breakfast at Tiffany's.
People say Marilyn couldn't act. But being Marilyn Monroe [italic]was[/italic] her act. And she was very good at it. She was also pretty good at comedy and singing.

They were both mesmerizing to look at.

The latter's former's humanity and vulnerability shines through the glossy mask and the latter is all mask, anorexic concoction that doesn't resonate (though lovely).

More accessible. Plus, the Givenchy intimidates the fraus.

How come Marilyn didn’t seem to be friends with the other actresses in Hollywood?

It’s from the last photo shoot she did. With Bert Stern. The dress is by Christian Dior.
[quote]Beaton had a photo shoot with Monroe. That night he wrote in his diary, 'This will end in tears.'
That session resulted in, I believe, her favorite picture of herself.
