Constance Wu Says She Was Sexually Harassed by ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ Senior Producer
Constance Wu has come forward with allegations that she was sexually harassed by a senior member of the “Fresh Off the Boat” production team.
According to the New York Times, Wu opens up about the experience in her upcoming memoir, “Making a Scene.” Though she only mentions the producer by an initial, Wu alleges that during the show’s first season in 2015, the man exhibited controlling behaviors and harassed her.
“‘Fresh Off the Boat’ was my first-ever TV show,” Wu told the Times. “I was thrown into this world. I don’t have parents in the industry. And because I was 30, people thought I knew what I was doing. It made me paranoid and embarrassed.”
According to a galley copy of the book sent to Variety, Wu alleges the producer told her to send him selfies and to run all her business decisions by him before making them. She also alleges the producer coerced her to attending a Lakers game with her, during which he touched her thigh and grazed her crotch, and then became cold to her after she told him to stop. Wu writes that she and the producer stopped talking after a blow-up argument over Wu’s decision to not attend an Asian American film festival to give her time to recuperate from the non-stop schedule on the show. However, she writes she eventually forgave him so that she could move on.
Wu said she decided not to speak up at the time due to fear of consequences, saying during a panel at the Atlantic Festival on Friday: “I kept my mouth shut for a really long time about a lot of sexual harassment and intimidation that I received the first two seasons of the show. Because, after the first two seasons, once it was a success, once I was no longer scared of losing my job, that’s when I was able to start saying ‘no’ to the harassment, ‘no’ to the intimidation, from this particular producer. And, so I thought: ‘you know what? I handled it, nobody has to know, I don’t have to stain this Asian American producer’s reputation, I don’t have to stain the reputation of the show.’”
Representatives for “Fresh Off the Boat” and 20th Television did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.
“‘Fresh Off the Boat’ was my first-ever TV show,” Wu told the Times. “[bold]I was thrown into this world.[/bold] I don’t have parents in the industry.
So what she's saying is that she was somehow FORCED to appear in this sitcom in a leading role. She didn't want to do it, but they somehow THREW her into doing it.
Who the fuck is going to believe that??
She's just making it worse for herself. She sounds nuts.

it is suspicious when they don't name names, they didn't call it out when it happened or in close proximity... and if true, leaving other people vulnerable. . . especially when so many from that show had no qualms in playing every card in the deck against other shows, individuals, the industry as a whole.
But it's common trait among minority shows...even in a post harvey world, too many afraid of losing work - not from backlash but the trickle down of associated projects and future opportunities.
they benefit more by not rocking the boat.

What "initial" did she give? Because she said he was Asian, and there were only 4 Asian producers on that show, listed below. And of those 4, only "Nahnatchka Khan" was an executive producer, which would be considered a "senior" level producer, as per her.
Eddie Huang
Nahnatchka Khan
Jeff Chiang
Aaron Ho

I feel bad for her. She did all of that work to make it in Hollywood, and she's consistently sabotaging herself. He was right, she should've gone to that Asian film festival even if she was exhausted. And seriously every time she looks at a camera she seems pissed. Why would any studio have confidence that she is marketable to the public after every blunder? Like she needs to hire a new PR team, especially if she did this thinking it would win any sympathy. He touched her leg at a basketball game? Grazed her crotch? Obviously he isn't going to be as warm and flirty after he found out you weren't into him, but she has no story or proof of actual retaliation.

This kind of thing hits socially connected people a lot harder because he knows hundreds of people up and down the industry--studios, agencies, management companies, talent, producers. all of them are going to read this, have an opinion about it, have to decide if they want to take his calls or do business with him anymore.

Millennial women of color don't understand how affirmative action worked for them. They benefited from a lower barrier to entry, but still were meant to work for what they wanted like everyone else (including men of color) - be it a career, fame and love of the people, sports greatness, or political power.
Instead, they very publicly combust when everything else isn't handed to them. It's phenomenal to see.
She wants to act like she is such a fighter for the Asian American community but instead very publicly complained when her show, the only fully Asian American sitcom, was renewed.
She's claiming that her complaints about the renewal were because of the sexual harassments that she was allegedly getting from the producer. I call bullshit on it. The incident with bitching happened in 2019, two years after MeToo started. In 2016, before MeToo she was bitching up a storm on social media about jokes Chris Rock made at the 2016 Oscars. It's interesting how she had the ability to bitch out Rock and ABC over dumb jokes, yet when MeToo started she kept quiet about the sexual harassment she was supposedly getting.
I do think some of the stories of sexual harassment and assault are true. But, I think are some cases of women exploiting it or making up shit as revenge. Several months ago, I was reading a series of articles on Mother Jones' website about bad bosses. These were all anonymous stories given to a reporter. Anyway, there was one story from a woman who she said she was a nurse at hospital somewhere in Texas and for the past two years she mostly worked in covid wards or ICU. She stated that the hospital was paying traveling nurses more than her and other nurses. At one point, a manager she was working under got fired for job performance. She claimed that the replacement was a guy in his early 30s who starts hiring attractive female nurses and then the guy starts making comments that he wouldn't say in front of other people. In the article, she claims that she went into the guy's office to get candy and that he joked to her that he was the only thing she could snack on. The other incident she claimed was that while she was pregnant, management had to find people to cover for her while she was at appointments etc and that the manager went and put her hand on her stomach and made comments about how he found coverage for her and her baby.
In the article, the nurse claims that she tried block things out because she was dealing with PTSD from covid and was somehow grateful that her supposed asshole manager helped her getting people to cover for her when she was pregnant and needed to take time . Eventually, the bad manager gets fired and she claims that he was sleeping with some of the nurses. There were a lot of things that were vague as fuck in the article. She claimed that people were scared to say anything about the manager. The nurse said she left that hospital after not getting raises and then she gets job at another hospital where she's being paid $90 an hour and gets additional $1,200 per week for food and living expenses. Something about her story seemed like bullshit or embellishments. I really fucking hated how Mother Jones which I used to like was posting parts of the story about her getting additional support for food and living expenses when many Americans just get their fucking paychecks and no additional money for food or living expenses. The nurse in the article seemed to have a lot of bitterness towards traveling nurses making more than her and I just got the feeling she embellished a lot of things for "revenge" and she figured her anonymous story with Mother Jones would be fine and dandy. I wonder if Mother Jones ever tried to look around Pacer or other sites which might show if any kind of sexual harrasement lawsuits were filed against that hospital.

Yesterday she was on 'The View' and almost had the whole panel crying over her story about 'victimhood'. She somehow tried to blame her infamous Tweet over the fact that she didn't want to return to the show because it hurt her emotionally, from what she went through the first few seasons with the sexual harassment. She then said another Asian actress suggested everyone would be better off without her living (or something like that) so that's when she decided to listen to her and try to suicide.
Sunny Hostin - former prosecutor - should have found all the holes in her story and should have questioned her. But she just dabed her eyes and seemed to believe everything she said.

Her publicist has decided to go with the "deflect with sad stories" strategy to rehab her image? Bad and over used strategy. See also: Chrissy Teigen and her alcoholism, infertility and pregnancy loss later retconned to abortion woes.

I can't even muster feeling sorry for Constance because I find her so unlikeable and fake.
Happy for Randall. Hope his new sitcom does well.

She was terrible in CRA. So absolutely flat. I was really surprised by the praise.

Of course it was nearly a decade ago.

Maybe he didn’t like being called “senior” and was just getting back at her for her ageism?

Her former co-stars probably want to wash their hands and keep moving on their careers.

Constance is being VERY chatty on Celebrity Jeopardy.
Why do none of her co-stars or colleagues stick up for her or defend her?
I have noticed that too. The only Fresh off the Boat co-star who seems to have an ok relationship with her is Hudson Yang. Hudson's father Jeff recently stated that Constance mentioned something about harassment on the set several years back. But, it's still telling that Randall Park, Lucille Soong, Chelsey Crisp, and Ray Wise who played the adult characters on the show haven't defended her. This ET article mentions Wu admitted in her book that she displayed childish behavior towards Randall and Chelsey.
Her-co stars from Crazy Rich Asians don't defend her either. Is she friends with any of her castmates from Hustlers?

She's a cunt, that's why.

She should change her name to Helen and start from scratch!

I really doubt it, JLow and Lili are both known assholes. Keke seems chill so i can't see her wanting to put up with Constance.

I've worked with Keke, and she probably would call her on her bullshit, and/or then put her on ignore.

R132, is Keke as awesome as she seems? If it’s even close, that’s a win.

r133, yes, I adore her. Very no nonsense, great sense of humor, very street smart, hard worker, brings her mom everywhere. If there's a word/concept/whatever she doesn't understand, she'll ask immediately what it is, rather than pretend she knows what it means.

We read her tweet. It was bitchy as hell.
It's kind of late to ask for forgiveness...almost like she's had three years to come up with an excuse.

I've worked with Randall too- very quiet, very observant, and an extremely dry sense of humor. He sort of acts like a bemused professor, but I think it's a ruse.
