Wizard of Oz Remake Director Says New Film Will Include LGBTQ Representation

David Selznick: "You don't fuck with a classic."
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 22, 2022 2:39 PM |
So, this means that Glinda will be a trans and the major roles will be black.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 22, 2022 2:58 PM |
As the story immediately following in the OP’s link says:
[quote] The Wizard of Oz Is Considered to Be One of the Greatest Films Ever Made
So, let’s leave it alone.
This will be interesting:
[quote] Now we’re going to turn a mirror on where we’re at right now and take disparate characters from the LGBTQ community, from different cultural communities and socioeconomic communities, and tell a story that reflects the world. I think this is the best time to do that.”
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 22, 2022 3:07 PM |
Glinda would be trans. Twitter would be outraged if the Wicked Witch were trans.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 22, 2022 3:07 PM |
maybe all the munchkins can be played by Ellen Page.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 22, 2022 3:09 PM |
The Lion was always kind of queeny.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 22, 2022 3:10 PM |
I wouldn't panic. Cowardly Lion, Cowardly Bear... same thing, when you think about it.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 22, 2022 3:10 PM |
You want queeny? That talking tube of KY was a powerbottom in seach of a can opener.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 22, 2022 3:12 PM |
This is the second director and it's still in development. I could be wrong but switching horses in the early going doesn't exactly scream we know what we're doing with this great idea...

It's like WWS. The original was so good, who wants it brought up to date to make it more inclusive? Fuck off
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 22, 2022 3:21 PM |
The last thing we need is a remake of this classic film.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 22, 2022 3:28 PM |
This will be as bad a train wreck as having Diana Ross as Dorthy.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 22, 2022 3:28 PM |
Remaking it is sacrilege. It is a classic, and no one can replace Judy Garland. Now I know the world is over. For shame.

R21 For over 60 years the original was popular and beloved by several generations who weren't even born when it was originally released. For a number of years, it was an event when it was shown on TV. Why does this highly imaginative film need to be re-imagined. Why don't filmmakers try and come up with something original?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 22, 2022 4:45 PM |
From a review of the recent Pinocchio re-imagining
-let’s just say that it seems like the people who made its biggest creative choices have more wood for brains than the character they brought to life.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 22, 2022 4:52 PM |
I wouldn't be too worried, my little pretties. A few years ago when motion capture/ entirely CGI movies were all the rage (Tom Hanks's "Polar Express" and Jim Carrey's "A Christmas Carol") "Oz" was at the top of the list for a remake. I don't recall his name (because I don't care), but Beanie's brother was supposed to play The Cowardly Lion and Will Ferrell was The Tin Man. That happened, didn't it?
Every new generation of film makers think they're going to tackle "Oz", put their own unique spin on it and earn the same immortality as the MGM production. Steven Stealberg often bragged about wanting to do "Oz", but the closest he got was telling everyone "Hook" was filmed on the same soundstages.
That film is the perfect example of serendipity. Honestly, I believe it's divinely protected and no one will ever get to fuck it up.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 22, 2022 4:58 PM |
My point is, these announced "Oz" remakes never happen.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 22, 2022 5:00 PM |
Steven Spielberg is probably the only director that could do it... but it doesn't need doing. It is a perfect children's/family classic. Same with Sound of Music. It just doesn't need doing.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 22, 2022 5:05 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 22, 2022 5:23 PM |
In my opinion, The Wizard of OZ is the greatest American film of all time. It's utterly perfect.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 22, 2022 5:29 PM |
I wouldn't want that bastard Stealberg anywhere near Oz. He couldn't even get his facts straight while asserting "Hook" had some sort of blessing on it by allegedly using the same soundstages.
Oz was one of Jim Henson's biggest inspirations. He often spoke of wanting to do a non-musical film version more closely resembling the original book and illustrations. But even Henson new it was best left alone.
I couldn't agree more R32 !
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 22, 2022 5:33 PM |
I went to college with the great-great granddaughter of L. Frank Baum, who wrote the book. She was a fidgety, anxiety-ridden veterinary medicine major.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 22, 2022 5:37 PM |
The opening credits of the 1939 film probably contain more inspiration than the entire remake will.

Dorothy (Laverne Cox) is trying to set up a shelter for abused LGBTQIA+ youth in Kansas. Unfortunately she has to deal with a nasty TERF called Mrs Gulch (Susan Sarandon) who wants to close down the shelter.
Then there's this awful Twitter storm and Dorothy gets sucked off into a hurricane and ends up in Oz where her LGBTQIA+ shelter ends up crushing another TERF called Jay Kay.
Dorothy quickly finds out that the people of Oz are called munchkins, trans men (all played by Elliot Page) who are in desperate need of top surgery from The Wizard Of Oz and who live in fear of The Evil Witch (Susan Sarandon again).
So Dorothy leads a Pride March to the Wizard's castle and on the way meets a Tin Person in need of a brain to have phalloplasty - Chaz Bono), a Lion in need of courage to have vaginoplasty (Hunter Schafer) and a Scarecrow in need of top surgery (Mae Martin).
By this point everyone has stopped watching so there's no need to continue.

First of all, they won't. So saying that is pretty pointless.
Second, the book has been adapted many times into a movie (into "The Wiz," for example), and will be many, may times more, long after we're no longer alive.

Who needs nonbinary munchkins, genderqueer Dorothy, and a trans Tin Woman? As it happens I always got the impression the Tin Man was a bit gay anyway and, for woke points, the Wicked Witch was already a POC (albeit green). How about you take this remake and throw a bucket of water over it? If we’re lucky, it will melt away into nothing.

So you mean lines from the 1939 version like:
"Well, I - I think that it - it wasn't enough to just want to see Uncle Henry and Auntie Em - and it's that - if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own back yard. Because if it isn't there, I never really lost it to begin with!"
or
“And remember, my sentimental friend, that a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.”
are somehow NOT dumb moralizing???

R81 the greatness of WoO does not lay in those selections. As a movie it is great as a whole. Which includes music, acting, cinematography.
I can assure you this remake will be stupid moralizing from the get go. It will be only that based on previous attempts in the last few years to remake classics.
BTW the Wiz was great. The music was great etc. It was also grounded in a more authentic and deeper historically grounded Black culture than is accessible to the Woke today.

What amazes me is that when they make a woke re-make of a classic, it almost invariably bombs. No one wanted to see an all-female "Ghostbusters," an LGBTQ "Cinderella" (with Billy Porter as the Fairy Godmother), a "Heathers" TV show with a fat transwoman as one of the three Heathers, a South Asian "David Copperfield," etc. People WILL go to see period productions with anachronistic woke casting if it's used intelligently in an original story, as with "Bridgerton" or "Hollywood." But they usually will not if its a re-make of a beloved old film or novel.
And yet, they keep making them.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | September 28, 2022 6:22 AM |
Ghostbusters remake was great - very enjoyable.
David Copperfield with Dev Patel was also great. His casting worked within the context of the movie. I also didn't have a problem with Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing which had Denzel Washington and Keanu Reeves as brothers.
Have no issue with Billy Porter as a Fairy Godmother.
I didn't watched Heathers but the idea of a fat trans person as a Heather sounds like they misunderstood the original premise, unless they made Veronica the villain instead of the Heathers.
