Sweet Freedom by Michael McDonald

Did eldergays love this song when it was released nearly 40 years ago?

I loved it. I was 16. Favorites are "I Keep Forgetting" and "Minute By Minute". Still love anything by the Doobie Brother, too.

An older co worker once told me how he would watch the young Doobie Brothers practicing from a garage. Said McDonald was the asshole of the band. I thought that was funny.

The young Doobie Brothers had Tom Johnston as lead singer, McDonald came after they were successful and not practicing in garages.

He turned 70 back in Feb.

I love his voice. There is something comforting about it.

Sweet Freedom is a great song.

He was so cute back then; the grey hair and beard. In the '80s, I made several cassette mixes, including "romantic" mixes, and remember cumming in a hot guy's mouth right when Michael hit a husky high note.

LOVE it. Always have. Another Rod Temperton classic. The video is great too with the appearances by Hines and Crystal.

I love this song!

This movie came out within that very small window in the mid-to-late-80s when Billy Crystal was actually pretty damn sexy.

by Anonymousreply 8September 22, 2022 4:39 AM

Indeed he was. He and Gregory Hines are pretty hot in the video too.

First off, FUCK YOU OP! 36 is not 40! That’s like saying you’re an 8 when you’re really _almost_ a 6.

With that out of the way, I’d like to second what everyone else has said. I was 13 when this came out. I was addicted to games on my Apple II computer, and my school papers were printed on a dot matrix Epson. Billy Crystal WAS sexy, but I still got tingly watching McDonald sing effortlessly into the camera lens with a voice that _had_ to require so much effort.

Thinking about it now, knowing what I’ve learned these *36 years, that man was advertising just what good a fuck he really was.

It’s so strange how Billy Crystal was sexy from about 1986 (Running Scared) to 1991 (City Slickers), but was absolutely hideous before and after those years.

He doesn't engage the audience when he keeps his head ducked down looking at his keyboard.

Judy Garland would not approve.

He sounds like absolute shit when he tries to perform the song live now.😑

GREAT song, perfect vocal. Still holds up.

by Anonymousreply 14September 22, 2022 4:53 AM

Nope, never cared for him. I always called him mush-mouth

by Anonymousreply 15September 22, 2022 5:10 AM

His voice is very mascular.

by Anonymousreply 16September 22, 2022 5:13 AM

His voice is lazy... Mumble, mumble, wah, wah... Mumble some more

by Anonymousreply 17September 22, 2022 5:24 AM

I didn't care for this song, but I do, generally, appreciate his distinctive vocals. I was disappointed to learn that he was a substance abusing asshole during his hit making period; he began to shake this frat boy crap off once real life began taking friends (Nicolette Larson for one) away from illness, and especially when his wife was diagnosed with cancer...according to my AARP magazine.

I love this song, and has some damn good horns in it.
