How much is gayness more acceptable today than in the 50s, 70s or 90s?
If Cary Grant, Little Richard and Luther Vandross were alive today, would they be openly gay?

Cary Grant- no
Little Richard yes- he came out then went back in then came out again anyway

Cary Grant would probably be a model among many, because he was working class through and through and nowadays, the performing arts are reserved for the (moderately talented and not particularly attractive) children of the wealthy. Also, the modelling world is a disaster and standards are in the toilet, so a genuinely handsome man like him wouldn't be given any opportunities. Consequently, his sexual orientation would be buy-sexual. However, if he managed to become famous, he would pull a Luke Evans or Richard Armitage and pretend to be straight in order to avoid alienating the hysterical fraus who idolize handsome actors.
Little Richard and Luther Vandross would have to compete with rappers and second rate wannabe crooners like John Legend and Usher, who are mostly homophobic. Thus, they would still be in the closet and if they came out, they would do so as bisexual or else, become embarrassing freaks like Lil Nas X.
It's surprising (or shall we say, depressing?) how little things have changed, in spite of the apparent tolerance that we enjoy.

I can see Luther doing what Tevin Campbell did: For years avoided the question and said he was 'trisexual - I'll try anything once' (before later coming out as gay).

Nope

Probably not. Even today's gay celebrities stay in the closet.

I bet Cary would so his daughter, Jennifer, would get attention and cast again.

Little Richard died within "our time" broadly speaking and choose not to come back out.

Cary Grant, no. I don't think he considered himself to be exclusively homosexual (not that I have any way of knowing). Little Richard, probably, he was pretty out during some periods. I don't know anything about Luther Vandross.

Little Richard came out only to Jesus.

I think Luther Vandross likely would be opening gay and in being so, much happier. And as such, probably much healthier physically - not stuffing his feelings with good - and maybe alive. Sad. The closet kills.

Luther came from a very religious family, although he was adamant he didn't care about church stuff. His mother was a churchie but he was very close to her. Not sure the closet killed him. He had two older sisters and one older brother and they all died in their 50s of complications from diabetes. It was a real killer in the family.

Cary Grant was kinda out and happy with Randy Scott
But the terrible back story about his mother in an asylum and then later LSD made any candour unlikely
And Dyan Cannon, of course

Luther would never have said "trysexual." Luther's image was not raunchy.

Little Richard is an odd option, considering he died relatively recently and he didn't walk back his religious comments (despite being known as groper of hospital orderlies...)

Nope. Luther did not know how to have a relationship. He never had a long term relationship. That wasn't because he was professionally closered.

No, I don’t think so.

OP, SHUT UP!

I think Luther had a relationship with the older brother of Jimmy Salvemini, the young singer he produced an album for. Then the car accident happened with Luther behind the wheel in which Larry Salvemini died. Luther's management team was able to keep this off the press mostly.

Little Richard was a hypocritical asshole. He outed Buddy Holly. He said he saw Holly in the middle of a daisy chain backstage at the Apollo Theater. Of course, he said this many years after Holly died.

The story I found was that Little Richard said Buddy Holly fucked his girlfriend while she sucked him off.
