Why do you all hate Viola Davis so much?

Is it because she will win the Best Actress Oscar next year?

Jealousy is such an ugly thing.

by Anonymousreply 120October 9, 2022 6:02 PM

Who hates her?

She's a phony who only cares about making bank and appeasing white people.

And she's overrated.

by Anonymousreply 1September 21, 2022 1:21 AM

It's because she's so beautiful.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 2September 21, 2022 1:23 AM

I don't hate her and don't understand why there seem to be a dozen daily threads about her. It started so suddenly.

by Anonymousreply 3September 21, 2022 1:25 AM

She's exhausting, she's humorless and she's a lot more limited as an actress than people acknowledge.

Her performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is what made me really turn on her. She was awful in that movie.

by Anonymousreply 4September 21, 2022 1:25 AM

She's a good actress. But, she's arrogant as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 5September 25, 2022 1:28 PM

Couldn't you just ask this question in one of the many threads about her and that movie?

by Anonymousreply 6September 25, 2022 1:29 PM

I am a huge fan; she’s a great actress. Her scene in Doubt is unforgettable, and she’s brilliant in Ma Rainey, Widows, Fences, Solaris, etc. I haven’t seen Woman King yet but will try to this week.

by Anonymousreply 7September 25, 2022 1:42 PM

She’s entitled. She thinks she’s all that. There are a lot of better black actresses. I’ll take Alfre Woodard and Angela Basset over this race baiting bitch any day

by Anonymousreply 8September 25, 2022 1:43 PM

I don't, but I hate "you all."

All you need is "you."

by Anonymousreply 9September 25, 2022 1:51 PM

Viola is a whinging, self-important charity case who expects the world to worship ground the walks on. She deserves to be loathed.

by Anonymousreply 10September 25, 2022 9:38 PM

Yeah she's way too uppity /s

by Anonymousreply 11September 25, 2022 9:41 PM

That interview complaining about how she's the black Meryl Streep but not paid enough turned me off to her.

Someone link it.

by Anonymousreply 12September 25, 2022 9:43 PM

The black Meryl is wealthy, famous, and has earned all of the accolades that actors dream of, but few ever receive. And still, she remains a bitter cunt with a chip on her shoulder who seems to think none of this is good enough. She is a nasty bitch.

by Anonymousreply 13September 25, 2022 10:02 PM

She suffers from Kathleen Battle Disease.

by Anonymousreply 14September 25, 2022 10:04 PM

She's a supporting actress trying to be a superstar.

by Anonymousreply 15September 25, 2022 10:08 PM

She hit me in the head with a fondue pot.

by Anonymousreply 16September 25, 2022 10:09 PM

We don't hate her, OP.

We just don't fall to our knees in worship and adoration just because she's breathing.

by Anonymousreply 17September 26, 2022 12:01 AM

Because she's black, duh. Are you new to DL?

by Anonymousreply 18September 26, 2022 12:02 AM

I don't hate her but it seems like she's everywhere all the time.

by Anonymousreply 19September 26, 2022 12:03 AM

R4 To be fair, it was an awful movie.

by Anonymousreply 20September 26, 2022 12:10 AM

It is because she got away with murder, op.

by Anonymousreply 21September 26, 2022 12:11 AM

Cate is a lock for Tar. Move on.

by Anonymousreply 22September 26, 2022 12:19 AM

[quote] Jealousy is such an ugly thing.

As is Viola Davis.

by Anonymousreply 23September 26, 2022 12:40 AM

Uppity, chip on her shoulder, entitled. So many in this thread are just itching to say call her the n-word, but too cowardly to say it.

To be fair, Datalounge often hate actresses who achieved so much but still complain as if they’re downtrodden. So I think it’s a combination of good ole fashion DL-style racism and former fans who’ve grown tired of hearing her whine about how hard she has it in Hollywood compared to her white peers.

by Anonymousreply 24September 26, 2022 12:52 AM

R24 yes, because "uppity", "chip on her shoulder", and "entitled" are all synonymous with the "n-word".

by Anonymousreply 25September 26, 2022 12:55 AM

Because with all her whining and posturing, she really isn't that great an actress. We're constantly told how amazing she is but then she goes and does something like the First Lady mini-series, and she isn't simply bad, she is absolutely awful. A great actor would know when they are wrong for the part and step aside. But Davis' ego wouldn't let her. And the stench from the performance will linger forever.

She also doesn't have much range. She can do big dramatic scenes, but she is not sexy, she is not funny, and she is rather sour.

by Anonymousreply 26September 26, 2022 12:59 AM

And she is not winning the Oscar this year.

by Anonymousreply 27September 26, 2022 1:01 AM

I like her but she’s becoming one note.

She play every character the same way—overwrought, overly dramatic and emotional

by Anonymousreply 28September 26, 2022 1:05 AM

Fug.

by Anonymousreply 29September 26, 2022 1:08 AM

She's an ASSHOLE

by Anonymousreply 30September 26, 2022 1:10 AM

R18, that's right, Datalounge only ever criticizes black performers.

by Anonymousreply 31September 26, 2022 1:13 AM

[quote]Is it because she will win the Best Actress Oscar next year?

She won’t even be nominated. SAG is where her train begins and ends.

VI-ola is going to seethe when literal who Danielle Deadwyler comes out of nowhere to win the Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 32September 26, 2022 1:29 AM

Not pretty enough to be on film.

by Anonymousreply 33September 26, 2022 1:39 AM

I watched HTGAWM from start to finish and although the show went off the rails, she was brilliant brilliant brilliant in every scene.

She’s great on film, but equally good on stage (100% deserved her Tony Awards) and that’s the sign of a true actress.

I can’t speak to her behavior on film sets, but I have a friend who worked on the Fences revival and said she was serious and focused, but far from a bitch.

by Anonymousreply 34September 26, 2022 1:47 AM

I told her I liked her in "The Woman King" and she farted right in my face!

by Anonymousreply 35September 26, 2022 2:10 AM

"I have the Emmy. I have the Tony. I have the OSCARRRRRRR! Pay me what I'm worth!!!!!"

by Anonymousreply 36September 26, 2022 2:13 AM

DL is not kind to negresses, especially those uppity ones!

by Anonymousreply 37September 26, 2022 2:57 AM

Don't hate her. She's good in some things, not in others. I don't think any actor is exempt from criticism. Or film.

As far as the Woman King goes, Davis should have resisted temptation. Juicy role, but problematic script. My respect really went up for Lypita. It's hard to resist a juicy role.

Which is maybe David's real issue. She doesn't know when to say "no". She wasn't going to pull off the calm, elegant, fierce Michelle Obama. She couldn't get inside the role and fell back on mannerisms .

by Anonymousreply 38September 26, 2022 2:58 AM

I can't stand her because she thinks the world owes her, when it obviously doesn't, plus she's not even that great of an actress.

by Anonymousreply 39September 26, 2022 3:04 AM

She wants everyone to know that she will never be enough and make people grovel at her feet. Then she goes home to her ten million dollar mansion.

by Anonymousreply 40September 26, 2022 3:19 AM

Let's just say I'd never cast her onstage in "Hay Fever"!

by Anonymousreply 41September 26, 2022 3:29 AM

I find her amusing.

by Anonymousreply 42September 26, 2022 3:34 AM

I find it amusing that most have caught on to her schtick.

by Anonymousreply 43September 26, 2022 3:36 AM

Exhume those BODIES!?!!

by Anonymousreply 44September 26, 2022 3:38 AM

You're so right, OP. We envy her her snot-dripping nose and her extremely thick middle-aged body!

by Anonymousreply 45September 26, 2022 3:39 AM

Her insistence that she is a sexual woman if off-putting from someone that's not empirically attractive.

by Anonymousreply 46September 26, 2022 3:40 AM

It's only the same 3 people who just continuously chat back and forth amongst themselves.

by Anonymousreply 47September 26, 2022 3:42 AM

R46 are you alright? They let unattractive people have sex these days, you know.

by Anonymousreply 48September 26, 2022 3:47 AM

Don't we hate everyone?

by Anonymousreply 49September 26, 2022 3:54 AM

We hate her because she's a Viola and not a proper Violin.

Like a musical saw, those nasty Violas.

by Anonymousreply 50September 26, 2022 3:57 AM

[quote] Because with all her whining and posturing, she really isn't that great an actress. I agree, she was wrong for the part of Michelle Obama. I remember in one of the DL threads on The First Lady, someone described her portrayal of Michelle as a bad MadTV or SNL type performance. Viola played her as someone who was too pissed off and Viola had zero abilities in trying to portray the warmness of Michelle.

by Anonymousreply 51September 26, 2022 3:57 AM

by Anonymousreply 53September 26, 2022 4:23 AM

She's so real!

by Anonymousreply 54September 26, 2022 4:25 AM

Because she’s a nigger.

by Anonymousreply 55September 26, 2022 4:39 AM

She has the magical ability to be flat and wooden AND chew the scenery at the same exact time which I didn't even think was possible.

by Anonymousreply 56September 26, 2022 5:15 AM

P.S. Burn in Hell, R55.

by Anonymousreply 57September 26, 2022 5:16 AM

[quote] I hate "you all."

Not when referring to Datalounge as a collective.

Then it's okay to use "you all."

by Anonymousreply 58September 26, 2022 6:15 AM

The racist trolls hate her. They hate all black women. They come here because their own sites agree with them, so it's no "fun". Exhausting.

by Anonymousreply 59September 26, 2022 7:46 AM

Bad attitude. Arrogant bitch.

by Anonymousreply 60September 26, 2022 7:49 AM

Uppity

by Anonymousreply 61September 26, 2022 7:49 AM

Mean. Chip on her shoulder. Plays the victim. Whiney. Complaining. Never happy. She's got a problem.

by Anonymousreply 62September 26, 2022 7:51 AM

Worthless stupid infantile trolls. Having fun? THIS is your fun?

Sad.

by Anonymousreply 63September 26, 2022 7:58 AM

Poor Viola

by Anonymousreply 64September 26, 2022 7:59 AM

Not true, R37! We love Michelle Obama!

by Anonymousreply 65September 26, 2022 10:26 AM

I like Viola a lot, but I will say her Oscar campaign for Fences was annoying given the category fraud. That was a lead performance and she would’ve actually beaten Emma Stone had the studio had the balls to back her in Lead. Michelle Williams was screwed that year.

by Anonymousreply 66September 26, 2022 11:54 AM

There you have it, folks! Thank you, R55, for being honest with your racism! Many on DL like to pretend it doesn’t exist here, but at least you’re brave enough to stand in your truth!

by Anonymousreply 67September 26, 2022 6:38 PM

Viola is an exceptional actress.

People think she’s full of herself but fail to hold self-confidence against male stars. And she had an exceptionally tough start in life.

by Anonymousreply 68September 26, 2022 6:43 PM

^^^ One of these Klan Grannies called her "uppity"...like we're in Alabama in 1971.

by Anonymousreply 69September 26, 2022 6:49 PM

She is actually kind of boring and not worth the attention she begs for.

by Anonymousreply 70September 26, 2022 6:51 PM

I don't thinks she's ever played a normal person which is sad given her talent. A lot of quality roles for black people are still very stereotypical. She's one of the few people entitled to speak out about it.

by Anonymousreply 71September 26, 2022 6:56 PM

She’s a pain in the ass. I don’t need to know everything she thinks, feels or says but she insists that I do.

by Anonymousreply 72September 26, 2022 7:12 PM

wtf they got that ole bag sellin L oreal beauty products? for what???? ducks ????

by Anonymousreply 73October 4, 2022 11:00 PM

She's nastyful.

by Anonymousreply 74October 5, 2022 1:49 AM

by Anonymousreply 77October 5, 2022 4:56 AM

Let's start w/her first name and go from there.

by Anonymousreply 78October 5, 2022 4:59 AM

Personally I didn't like how she turned in a substandard performance on The First Lady and then lashed out at critics when they mocked her. That's my only beef with her. God she was terrible as Michelle.

by Anonymousreply 79October 5, 2022 5:35 AM

They hate me because I'm so sexy.

by Anonymousreply 80October 5, 2022 6:54 AM

I avoid social situations because I hate to be judged. Within a few minutes of talking to me, people want to know where I went to college (nowhere) and what kind of work I do (entry-level, unimpressive).

An old acquaintance recently invited me to his 70th birthday party and I lied and said I had to work, because I don't want to watch that deflated expression over and over when I explain my lack of credentials.

by Anonymousreply 81October 5, 2022 8:07 AM

Not to pile on to your problems r81 but you also seem to be in the wrong thread.

by Anonymousreply 82October 5, 2022 8:09 AM

by Anonymousreply 83October 5, 2022 8:11 AM

I don't hate ber. I think k she's very pretty, but she seems to have a nasty personality, and she is very dull. I don't hate her though.

by Anonymousreply 84October 5, 2022 9:07 AM

How is she in comedy? (Has she ever done comedy?) I enjoyed The Woman King, but the role didn’t let Viola demonstrate much range.

by Anonymousreply 85October 5, 2022 11:36 AM

She has always been one of my favorite actresses and she stole the movie from Meryl with that one scene in Doubt. Her story of a childhood growing up in soul killing poverty and being told that she was ugly and would never make it as an actress because of her looks was moving and heart wrenching. No doubt she taps into that pain for certain roles. But hearing that story repeated in every interview starts to wear on the listener. It alienates people who are in her corner and who revere her work. And it doesn’t seem to help her deal with unresolved issues. She needs therapy. And lots of it.

by Anonymousreply 86October 5, 2022 1:35 PM

No doubt she taps into that pain for certain roles. But hearing that story repeated in every interview starts to wear on the listener.

That's a good point.

And contrast that with Gabourey Sidibe who grew up in that same poverty. I think her mother was a street performer, or something like that.

Looks-wise, Viola has had it easier than Gabourey.

Yet Gabby has a decent career, and I never hear her whining, or complaining, or being ungrateful.

Have a seat, Viola.

by Anonymousreply 87October 5, 2022 3:10 PM

I think Gabourey Sidibe and other actors who grew up in poverty have enough sense to not whine or complain too much in the media because they know it will eventually turn people off. Hilary Swank used to talk about living in a car with her mother, but eventually stopped either because someone told her to or she realized on her own that it was enough.

Aside from her growing up in poverty, it's clear Viola hates that she's not very attractive and she is rough looking. She probably has to have some resentment towards Angela Bassett who is very beautiful and looks great for her age. Viola is younger than Angela and she's knows that she will not age well like Angela.

by Anonymousreply 88October 5, 2022 3:27 PM

I want to hear more about r81

We're intrigued.

by Anonymousreply 89October 5, 2022 3:39 PM

I prefer the violin.

by Anonymousreply 90October 5, 2022 11:06 PM

She's a cunt!

by Anonymousreply 91October 6, 2022 12:21 AM

I love her but I also think that she takes herself too seriously. Maybe that’s what it is.

by Anonymousreply 92October 6, 2022 12:23 AM

Viola was an answer on Jeopardy today. No one got it. Poor Viola.

by Anonymousreply 93October 6, 2022 3:41 AM

Interesting, that smug Viola has a life coach. Her life coach should give her advice on not being a smug ungrateful cunt. But, then again life coaches are full of shit phonies.

by Anonymousreply 98October 6, 2022 4:20 AM

Her raw animal magnetism is more than I can bear. Sweats sexuality.

by Anonymousreply 99October 6, 2022 4:21 AM

Gabourey Sidibe seems like a fun, nice person, and as others have noted, she also grew up in abject poverty and is certainly less conventionally attractive than Viola. She also hasn’t had 1/10th of the success or accolades Viola has, and you never hear her whinging about the state of her career. She gets dragged in DL as a token fat joke, but I think she’s a good actress. A lot of people wrote off her performance in Precious as a “fat black girl from the ghetto playing a fat black girl from the ghetto,” but if you watch interviews with her, it’s evident that she very much is not that character in real life. Her acting in that film was very good and, at times, heartbreaking.

by Anonymousreply 100October 6, 2022 4:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 107October 6, 2022 6:56 AM

I don’t hate her but she doesn’t have much range. Octavia Spencer is a far better actor who can be funny, serious, heartbreaking, scary, and campy. The Michelle Obama portrayal is going to be her mommie dearest.

by Anonymousreply 108October 6, 2022 7:07 AM

We tend to like the Charlie’s Angels actresses. I remember a glowing topic on Pam Grier. So there are a few female stars we like. Madaline kahn. Terry garr. Oh! There was the thread on Rita Moreno that read like a love letter. Carol Burnett. Cicley tyson. I think we liked pearl Bailey. It goes on & on - the DL love is huge.
