their excuses
“Guests are asked to do two to three things and they feel like, ‘Oh my God, I’m doing everything,’ ” said Gabby Wallace who runs Airbnbs in Maine, Austin and Kansas City. “There are close to a hundred things I have on the checklist for my cleaners.”
Hosts say they need guests to do more as Covid-19 has changed sanitation expectations and inflation has boosted the cost of cleaners.

Simple solution: If you don't like it, don't stay at their stupid air bnb.

Their rental, their rules. Just find another host.

Or, just stay at a hotel.
Now, there's a thought.

I'd rather stay at a hotel 🛏️

It's completely ridiculous. I rented my house out on Airbnb for 4 years until Covid shut down everything. I got $199 per night for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. I never charged a cleaning fee, and I never asked guests to do any cleaning. Many guests did some cleaning anyway, especially guests from Europe, who tended to leave the place spotless. Guests from Asia... well, I will not comment. I spent many long hours cleaning the house myself, over and over and over and over and over. I still made pretty good money despite never having charged any of those ridiculous extra fees.

I don't mind doing my dishes and stripping the bed but if I am paying a cleaning fee I most certainly am not doing more than that on top of the fee. The cleaning fee being more than the rental fee is pretty ridiculous too.

In so many ways, Airbnb seems like more trouble than it's worth - not just the cleaning fees, but also the need to get good ratings from your past hosts. It's easier to stay in a hotel.

If an AirBnB is no longer cheaper than a modest hotel, plus I have to clean, what is the point of AirBnB anymore?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 21, 2022 1:14 AM |
r10? Plus, most of them have cameras all over the place. I want to be able to be naked and fart if need be without worrying it's caught on camera.

Fuck that. I'm a tidy, conscientious, low maintenance guest, but I'm not a maid, or a laundry worker, or a handyman, or a lawn maintenance worker. I wouldn't stay anywhere that tries to put the onus of readying the place for the next quest on the departing guest.
The price of everyone's milk, household appliances, utility bills, etc., etc. have risen; they have not risen with the purpose of unfairly targeting AirBnB (or hotel) operators.
A good host offers a product that is fairly priced for what it is within it's market and comes with no surprise expectations. Staying on holiday should not be like bitchy drama at the sorority house with pissy notes about respecting each sister's labels refrigerator items and hailing the trash 4 blocks to the recycling center and so on. Those are business costs, for the business to bear and reflect in his prices.
Likewise, don't use 2020 COVID fears to shortchange 2022 customers on front desk staff, housekeeping services, and automating check-in remotely with no at aitevrecoursevto problems. That's inferior AirBnB practice, not the practice of hotels.

R3 & R2 = cheapo, money grubby airbnb owner
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 21, 2022 7:36 PM |
What's worse is that they often have later check-ins than hotels (I've seen 5-6pm), they often live near or next door to the property and eyeball you, and will scrutinize your comings and goings and god help you if you cook-they will nitpick. I don't want to have to wear someone else's slippers or wipe down their special sink every time I use it. Nope, hotels are for me.
I am not expected to be the maid in a hotel. F that.

I have stayed in Airbnbs all over Latin America and have never been given a list of rules or cleaning demands. I do keep clean as I am renting for weeks at a time…but within reason. I’m not going to wax floors or wash windows. Taking out trash, removing dirty linens, not a big deal. Outdoor maintenance should never be the responsibility of a guest.
I think it is mainly a US thing for hosts to make such ridiculous demands. I will stick to hotels in the US.

I have no use for being video taped the whole time I’m staying there. Beyond creepy. Too many have a key to the place as well. No.

AirBnB has pretty strict restrictions on locations of cameras which have to be disclosed ahead of the rental. Most properties also have a code for the entry, not a lock. I love a nice hotel but for anything more than a few nights I prefer a kitchen, living room, outdoor space as well as the bed and bath.
I have never been asked to do anything other than run the dishwasher before leaving.

I recall renting a lady's log home in rural Wisconsin years ago. It was a nice place and very cheap for the size, so we came back several years running.
But. She'd show up unannounced. I can see the landlord doing that once, as a quick check on the prospective tenants. But she'd show up all the time and bring her adopted crack baby kids with her (telling us in front of them all about their terrible lives). We weren't there to socialize with her.
The final straw was when she dropped them off for us to watch for her. We'd mentioned we were going to a large local festival, and she just decided we'd be thrilled to take her kids along.
I've noticed that most short-term rental listings I've followed over the years tend to disappear after a few years. I suspect the property owners find out the hassle and property damage and complaining neighbors isn't worth the money they take in from renting their places.

They do not always tell you there are cameras there. I’ve never had one ABnB tell me there were cameras and that’s bullshit. Also, the combo lock is to get the front door key. One anyone has the front door key, they can get in whenever they want. I rented an ABnB once in Westwood and came home to find one of the door left wide open. It was beyond creepy. So, no. The anxiety from trying to fall asleep when someone could just walk in is too much. Oh, I rented an ABnB in Malibu - and the renter didn’t tell the truth. No lock at all to get a key from. With a hotel I know where I stand. It costs the same these days anyway. Never again with an AirBnB.

Ps: *It was scary showing up on PCH at night in the rain to have no Malibu ABnB! Shitty to sit in a gas station parking lot as I tried to stay calm and find a fucking hotel room or any ABnB last second. Fuck ABnB! - I am r20
