STD Rates Are Rising At "Out Of Control" Levels

There are at home kits to test for syphilis?

What the hell else are people supposed to do?

[Quote]Another expert said a core part of any effort must work to increase the use of condoms.
[Quote]“It’s pretty simple. More sexually transmitted infections occur when people are having more unprotected sex,” said Mike Saag, an infectious disease expert at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Raw sex has now become law among gay men. This is the consequence.

r3 yes, let's ignore the millions upon millions of women that hate condoms and especially female condoms... It's the homos. So, become a political lesbian and avoid bisexuals. and you'll be safe... by never getting tested and avoiding gynecologists. (seriously, anyone remember when regularly saw gynecologists for more than an annual checkup but now even within cities, it's much rarer to find young women that ever have.)
still, from either side, it's not all that surprising when far too many on PreP or birth control believe they protect against all stds.
and likewise, str8 guys are just as clueless about std prevention
and there's a mainstream cult that believes hiv never existed and unfortunately, this myth is pushed harder in black and ethnic communities.
Of course, we could also add with how the south is the biggest hotbed, where the conflicts reside between state governance as well as inadequate federal funding... and general lack of interest from public charities, especially the lgbt variety.. which this has been discussed for decades. Of course, whether it's women, gays or minorities... suffering is what fills the fundraising coffers.

I thought PrEP cured all STDs?

R5 You have some valid points buried in incoherent ranting.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 20, 2022 10:41 AM |
Ahh the old days...
Give some poor soul two probenecid pills with glass of water, then instruct them to sit in waiting room for a bit. Call them back and arrive with tray holding two 60 cc syringes penicillin. Then summon assistance because some 6' 3" 250lbs of man has fainted at sight of needles.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 20, 2022 10:48 AM |
r7 if it was that incoherent, then you wouldn't have saw the points. Would you prefer I flood by links, articles, research papers or videos next time? Perhaps take up twenty replies when I have time to sit down, organize my thoughts and maintain perfect grammar to prevent oh, dear clutching in this grand ol' civilized forum of intellectual and scholarly thought.
Or perhaps say nothing at all... and let it fill up with the secular outcry towards the sins of gay men. . . to which this brand of scapegoating has been about as effective at eliminating the moral, social and public health risks of the homosexual as religious has.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 20, 2022 10:51 AM |
perhaps we should just blame it all on "toxic" masculinity. . .
and advocate for their transition instead,
except then it would be harming women by still existing.
so, what solution is left?
bringing back anti-sodomy laws? quarantines by prison? conversion? you can be gay but never act upon it or face public executions?

R5 What are female condoms? Also, I've never heard that women particularly hate condoms. It's usually the male partners who don't want to wear them. Women are burdened most with pregnancy so they are less likely to actively want to have unprotected sex.

R6
No, it doesn't.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 20, 2022 11:01 AM |
PrEP does seem to have made people complacent because we've mostly heard about HIV.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 20, 2022 11:02 AM |
R5 I'm not wrong.
[Quote]Gay and Bisexual Men - Make up nearly half of all 2019 primary and secondary syphilis cases. Gonorrhea rates were 42 times that of heterosexual men in some areas.
Yes, rates are increasing in general, alarmingly so among those between the ages of 15 to 24. But gay men are most likely to be better informed about unsafe sex, yet still ignore the risks just for sexual pleasure.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 20, 2022 11:08 AM |
When gay rights orgs pressed for PrEP to be given free on the NHS in the UK there were a lot of questions, especially from older gay men, about the impact it would have on transmission of other STDs.
There was a huge focus on eradicating HIV and the cost savings PrEP would bring, less what education gay men would be given about other STIs, despite regular studies on antibiotic resistant infections.
And here we are! The response to the Monkey Pox outbreak was ridiculous - gay men can't be expected to keep their dicks in their pants while they wait for the vaccine roll out because that's LGBT+ discrimination.

We have had this conversation before during monkeypox and it is futile.
Half the board will take a view that condoms are necessary if imperfect and less fun.
Half the board will take the view that any kind of self responsibility or self restraint is a human rights violation on the scale of Auschwitz.
Hysteria will ensue. Flames will be thrown. There is nothing to be done. This time, unlike the 80s, something has changed in culture at large and we are unable to adapt.

R17, are you suggesting PrEP should have been withheld because people are whores? HIV kills. There’s no cure yet. STIs can be though.

[quote][R17], are you suggesting PrEP should have been withheld because people are whores? HIV kills. There’s no cure yet. STIs can be though.
No, I'm not suggesting that. but there could have been an education programme that PrEP *ONLY* protects against HIV and that other STIs are still very dangerous and should be avoided, and that regular health check ups are essential as part of taking PrEP.

God's wrath upon the homosexual. When you mock Him and His laws, there are consequences.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 20, 2022 12:18 PM |
R21, umm they did do that and people know. Why the hell do you think those on meds are the most likely to get checkups? And what Prep users don’t know it’s for hiv only?
You’re just another self loathing incel. Accusing gays of non stop sex when most don’t even have sex is ridiculous. Incels always think that people are virgins or filthy whores. Nothing in between.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 20, 2022 1:02 PM |

A lot of young gay men don't realise PrEP doesn't leave them at risk from other STDs when barebacking.
[quote]You’re just another self loathing incel. Accusing gays of non stop sex when most don’t even have sex is ridiculous. Incels always think that people are virgins or filthy whores. Nothing in between.
Nah, not self loathing at all, but I grew up in a period when famous gay men were dying of AIDS. And not an incel either. I've had boyfriends with HIV and was told I was mad to have safe sex with them by friends who would have drunken bareback sex with one night stands.
But I work in health and it really worries me that another epidemic is around the corner, and the response to Monkey Pox scared me.
I don't want it to happen again, simple as that.

Most American children get either no formal sex education or a heavily censored version that leaves out vital details like how to effectively protect against STDs. But what they do get is porn and lots of it, which indoctrinates them into the idea that sex is something you just do impulsively without any thought of your or anybody else's safety. Plus consider how many Americans have no access to affordable health care and only go to a doctor when they're so sick they can't ignore it anymore. And yeah, you're going to have plenty of STDs.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 20, 2022 2:12 PM |
There's always going to be another epidemic now, so many travel now around the world it is inevitable. Just wait until it's one that kills immediately, maybe even faster than COVID.

Past two decades or so has seen an explosion of new technology. Gone are days of only cruising bars, clubs or cottaging, now one can find hook-ups with just a flick of finger or mouse click.
Men historically in good numbers never warmed up to wearing condoms. It was only the risk of STDs that made many use them, after all men cannot get pregnant.
HIV/AIDS caused a boom in condom use, but once again it didn't last. By 1990's and certainly 2000's things were tapering off once again.
Part of issue is people seem to believe HIV/AIDS is nothing to worry about today compared to back in the day. Nor to they seem to believe other STD are anything to fret about either apparently. Answer to everything is to get a shot or take a pill, then that's that.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 20, 2022 2:42 PM |
r12 No, women quite frequently say they don't like condoms when you become friends with them outside of areas with sociopolitical pressures to say otherwise.
and remember, lesbians are women too.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 20, 2022 2:55 PM |
r12 women are the most overburdened by the risk of pregnancy but yet go to any public spot where women may hookup and see how many are carrying condoms... and get back to me.
or even do a survey on most personal sites as to whether these women are providing their own safer sex protection or how knowledgeable they are about it beyond just birth control.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 20, 2022 2:59 PM |
^ birth control pills... which most use to control their periods and symptoms of pms rather than to prevent pregnancy... which also leads to greater misuse and accidents when they're not practiced in using it as a prevention method.

There was an article a while back, maybe something to do with an anniversary of how Dawson's 20 Load Weekend normalised bareback or linked to it, and there were some older professional guys who had experienced the tail end of AIDS - they were taking PReP and would fly off to circuit parties and fuck round on drugs and then when they were back home go to their pre-booked doctors appointment for check ups and antibiotic shots, which they'd take regardless of any positive results.
Quite an expensive hobby.

Facts are facts. Playing stigma cards gets in the way of serious discussion and serious policy. Same thing happened with all the hand wringing about Monkeypox. Time and health squandered for fear of being labelled.

I’m 31, on Prep, but feel like the only person that takes the free condoms at some of the gay bars me and my friends attend. It’s really nice to always have them on hand.
No I don’t use them for oral but 90% of the time when having anal sex I wrap it up. I grew up in conservatives IN where they scared the hell out of me about AIDS and gay sec. It stuck. But now I just do it for protection from strangers.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 20, 2022 9:11 PM |
Lots of gay guys have a religious view of sex, as demonstrated in a faith-based approach toward barebacking and the universal protection of PReP. If you just have faith and PReP, nothing bad will happen to you.
This is not unique to gay guys, of course. Many people expect science to bail them out of stupid decisions made in the name of personal liberty.
It has ever been thus: pray to the sun god or pray to your pill bottle.

Thankfully method of treatment outlined in R8 largely long as gone by the boards.
CDC recommended treatment for STDs is just the one shot of Benzathine penicillin G, no probenecid required because due to long acting affects of former.
Far less meds are given by injection nowadays so levels of those who freak out upon seeing a syringe are perhaps slightly greater than in past. Then comes fun when you tell them to drop their pants and bend over...
