Oversharing on YouTube is reaching ridiculous heights

I don't use YouTube as much anymore these days, but went to look at my subscriptions the other day and saw a video from one YouTuber I have followed in the past. She was filming from a mental hospital that she had admitted herself too. She was crying about how she doesn't think she's worthwhile and a good girlfriend to her boyfriend. And her mother is dying but she decided she needed to admit herself to this mental hospital so she can't even see her mother while she's dying. It was extremely confronting.

It's not that I don't have empathy for someone doing it rough but I followed her because she did videos on learning languages! It's almost embarrassing she put all that personal stuff out there like that, not to mention kinda unsafe to share every detail of your life with strangers.

I dunno, I'm now in my 40s, I guess I'm just too old to understand this stuff.

It's baffling to me as well. The thought of posting a video of myself crying is just so humiliating and weird.

People share their daily shits. They show themselves wiping shit out of their assholes. They do it all.

Absolutely. It's worrying too - god knows what it bodes for the future, just everyone humiliating themselves like that for engagement, or because they think that is real life? It used to be just the reality show contestants who behaved in such a way.

Is this in the US? Inpatient psychiatric hospitals don't allow patients to have cell phones. Patients having access to stressors/triggers via internet & social media + private, unrestricted access to abusive or toxic people in their life thru text messages and phone calls undermines treatment; having a camera and filming in a mental health facility is a violation of other patients' privacy. Patients are limited to using hospital phones that are monitored and this is limited to a specific time of day, usually only once daily.

She's South African and she's been living in Singapore, R4. I'm not sure where this was done, because it's been so long since I've really gone through my subscriptions.

by Anonymousreply 5September 18, 2022 12:11 AM

Ah, okay. Thanks for clarifying, R5.

It's not the fault of YouTube or those who post there, OP. You're the one choosing which YouTube channels to watch. Instead of the tripe you describe, try the Wildlife of Maine channels and revel in racoons!

Those people are making a living off posting vids so do whatever it takes to get clicks

Narcissism.

These dolts feel they are SO important to the world that the world NEEDS to know everything about them because we are SO concerned about them,

A lot of these people also substitute Youtube viewers for real live relationships with people. They don't talk to real live humans but exist in relationships with zeros and ones out there is cyberspace. After a year or two you hear about their mental breakdowns.

This is so true, and it brings up images in the mind of future generations of people who cannot interact with people in real life anymore.

R7 How long until a raccoon is weeping for the camera and listing their litany of mental diagnoses. " I was diagnosed with OCD for my garbage digging. The doctor thinks I have low self esteem and don't think I deserve anything better than half eaten food..."

Bwahaha, R11! Good one!

(Incidentally, just want to reiterate to r7 that I would agree if I had been seeking out videos like this just to be annoyed by, but instead I am watching videos on simple topics like language learning and suddenly seeing this stuff, I didn't search for it. And I'm noticing it happening a lot these days.

(Having said that, I do agree that videos such as the one you recommend are probably a lot nicer to watch. Thanks for sharing!)

Yeah, I think it's pretty disgusting. I would feel gross. I sometimes wonder that about these guys who post full frontal nude videos of themselves jerking off on Reddit, and their profile says "Just a low key cool single dad who likes beers and babes and showing off lol". I cannot imagine if I had kids and they ever saw me on Reddit doing THAT. I think some guys are genuinely dumb about how the internet works or what levels of privacy are entailed. In conversation a while back one of my neighbors was telling me he didn't have any luck on dating apps and I asked him which ones. He opens a folder on his phone where he has all the dating apps, and he is complaining about Reddit, saying, "yeah you can only use it for hookups and they don't have compatibility tests, like it's all location-based!" I told him that Reddit is not a dating app. He had no idea that tons of people use reddit for all sorts of random shit outside the hookup forums. Like, he thought the profile he created was just seen by women on a dating app 😮 The look on his face.

Haha, really R13! Oh gosh, would've liked to have seen the look on his face there. I do (sorta) get it in one sense, in that when I first found reddit, I don't think I had any idea of how far reaching it is across topics. When people were talking about terrible people doing terrible things on there, I was so confused, because the areas I went to were lovely.

I have wondered about those guys too. They mostly all show their faces, some of them are married apparently, and like you say, I'm not sure they perhaps understand the whole "once you're online, you're there for good" type thing.

Perhaps the excitement of feeling wanted and lusted after trumps that?

MikeMGTV, a reality show regular, does the same. Heart to Hearts and spills his guts. Gets him views and all the teens eat it up. A big mess of crying and problems. Grow up already. Get some REAL friends. He’s 30+ and still acting like a teen.

Makes me think of Lisa Kudrow’s inspiration for THE COMEBACK
