I believe he was bullied as a child, and now uses his smarts and fame to do the same. He is allowed to change his mind, redirect his thought process or say and do anything...but if his debate opponent does it he/she is scorched. Compare Shapiro in conversation or debate with someone like Christopher Hitchens. Hitchens is actually, like most truly intelligent people, interested in other opinions, in what the other person has to say. Because ultimately the aim is to hash something out, to get closer to a/the truth, to learn something or see an issue from a new perspective. Shapiro just wants to win. It's entirely about ego for him, entirely about himself.

You do wonder if he ever switches off, if it's a persona, or if he's just like this all the time. I once had a roommate who exuded the same energy. Not sure of his politics but I distinctly remember that when we walked together (as we often did - we weren't friends but since we lived in the same apartment often found ourselves headed in the same direction) he was always a few steps ahead of me. I would try to catch up and he would just speed up. The whole walk would just be this extremely weird dance of having a small-talk conversation with someone who could barely hear me because they were a few steps ahead. I remember never really being able to relax when he was in the room, too. He just had this hyper, nervous, super defensive energy. And it wasn't gay weirdness either because I'm a woman.
