CPB bought Ray Mill property after her divorce. It was and still is her base of operations where she can be herself, not (formerly) the Princess of Wales, nor now queen consort.

Ray Mill is where CPB could pop down to the shops, have her children and grandchildren come to stay, friends visit, etc.... All this in a much less formal atmosphere than any of the royal residences HM could use before and certainly now given her elevated status. Well suppose Balmoral and a few others might come close.

To use an American expression Ray Mill is where CPB came and still goes to "unclench" as it were. She can put up her feet, wonder about her own home without servants or anyone else present if she wishes.
