Who was Elvis Presley's Hottest Movie Costar?

There are so many to choose from so vote in the poll or comment with your choice.

No contest. Ann-Margaret.

by Anonymousreply 1September 17, 2022 2:01 AM

R1, who is Ann-Margaret? Do you mean his Viva Las Vegas costar Ann-Margret?

by Anonymousreply 2September 17, 2022 2:09 AM

Yes. Thank you for that clever, hilarious and totally non-cunty way of pointing out the misspelling, r2!!

by Anonymousreply 3September 17, 2022 2:15 AM

I like Elvis but most of his movies were so bad that even he didn't like them. Some of his leading ladies were probably embarrassed by them too. He refused to make anymore after the 1960's.

by Anonymousreply 4September 17, 2022 2:19 AM

Ann-Margret was the only female co-star who matched him for energy on screen.Viva Las Vegas is awful, but when the two of them are on screen, the chemistry is off the charts. I remember where Elvis supposedly said he slept with all but two of his co-stars. I assume one was the soon-to-be-nun Dolores Hart, but I'm not sure of the other.

The movies were what did Elvis in. The first ones weren't bad, like Love Me Tender and Jailhouse Rock, but then they got really formulaic and really bad, so when the Beatles came along, the fans were ready to move on.

R4, that's not accurate. Elvis wanted to star opposite Streisand in the remake of A Star is Born, but Col. Parker turned it down. There's a lot of documentation to support this. If he'd made the film, it might have changed his trajectory.

I'm kinda glad Elvis' legacy isn't intertwined with Barbra Streisand's or that 70s version of A Star is Born. I'm not convinced it would have been a brilliant or career-saving (or life-saving) move.

R7, A Star is Born was the third highest-grossing film released in 1976. It would have made Elvis seem contemporary and more than just the legacy act he'd become.

"A Star is Born was the third highest-grossing film released in 1976."

It also sucked. Many of Elvis' movies were actually among the highest-grossing of their particular year. He needed to be in a GOOD movie, and that one came out pretty lame.

Being associated with Barbra Streisand at the end could just have easily sunk his legacy. It's easy to imagine in hindsight that it would have been the perfect vehicle for him, saved his career, saved him from addiction and the sad end, but I doubt it. I'm glad it was averted.

Kris Kirstoferson probably regrets it.

R10, you are stupid AF. KK has mentioned many times how much he loved working with Barbra and he appeared at her AFI tribute and saluted her.

by Anonymousreply 11September 17, 2022 9:00 PM

Excuse me, r11.

I bet he SECRETLY regrets it.

His image today would be very different had he skipped it.

R5 Mary Tyler Moore wrote in her book that she was the one leading lady Elvis didn’t sleep with, and she said “What was I thinking?!”

I liked Elvis and Judy Tyler in Jailhouse Rock. She died in a car accident right after filming the movie. Elvis supposedly could never bring himself to watch the movie because of it.

Why is Barbara Stanwyck not listed?

by Anonymousreply 15September 18, 2022 2:49 AM

This poll is missing Yvonne Craig.

Elvis was smitten with Debra Paget.

When Judy made A Star is Born, she was originally interested in playing the Norman Maine character. In the 60s, she should have remade A Star is Born with Elvis with her as Norman Maine and Elvis as the young ingenue.

by Anonymousreply 18September 18, 2022 2:55 AM

I can't believe he made 31 films from 1960 to 1969. No wonder he became an addict, they worked him to death.

by Anonymousreply 19September 18, 2022 2:57 AM

Viva Las Vegas isn’t an amazing movie but the chemistry between Elvis and Ann Margret makes it worth it.

I enjoy a number of Elvis movies. Jailhouse Rock, King Creole, G.I. Blues, Blue Hawaii, Girls! Girls! Girls!, It Happened at the World’s Fair.

Richard Eagan in "Love Me Tender"

R15, Barbara Stanwyck IS listed.

Did the movies make a lot of money and did Elvis see any of it?

by Anonymousreply 24September 18, 2022 3:31 PM

I think Elvis did have some baseline dramatic talent - and he surely had tons of charisma and presence - but the Colonel was a grifter who just shoved him into fluff for lots of $$$$.

by Anonymousreply 25September 18, 2022 3:36 PM

"Did the movies make a lot of money and did Elvis see any of it?"

Yes, and yes. He was the highest paid movie star in history at one time. Although they're not well-regarded nowadays, many, if not most, of his movies were giant hits at the time. Blue Hawaii, for instance, was among the biggest hits of 1961, outearning both Breakfast at Tiffany's and Judgment at Nuremberg, both released that same year.

The movies dropped off in quality as the 60s progressed, but it hardly seemed to matter. They still made money. Even the worst and least popular Elvis pictures still earned money.

Though the colonel cut himself a big piece of the pie, there was still lots and lots left for EP.

Barbara Eden

by Anonymousreply 27October 1, 2022 6:39 AM

Elvis couldn't have worked with Barbra and Jon Peters. It was a shitstorm between them and Kristofferson.

by Anonymousreply 28October 1, 2022 6:43 AM

[quote] "This poll is missing Yvonne Craig."

AND Angela Lansbury, R16!

by Anonymousreply 29October 1, 2022 7:13 AM

I can see Elvis in A Star is Born. He would have brought some much-needed authenticity to it. It would have changed his career trajectory.
