Rebooted Quantum Leap premier

Monday September 19 at 10 pm/9pm central .

Will you be watching?

by Anonymousreply 33April 3, 2023 1:41 AM

I'll try it. I loved the original show

by Anonymousreply 1September 17, 2022 12:42 AM

Did they not offer SB enough money?

by Anonymousreply 2September 17, 2022 12:52 AM

I've seen one preview in which the trveler is said to be looking for Sam Beckett so Bakula may show up in the future.

by Anonymousreply 3September 17, 2022 2:04 AM

Bakula says he's totally uninvolved in the new series.

I've heard good things. I'll give it a try.

by Anonymousreply 4September 17, 2022 2:18 AM

Premier? Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 5September 17, 2022 9:43 AM

Pilot was ok. I'll probably watch to see if it improves.

by Anonymousreply 6September 21, 2022 1:32 PM

I didn't make it through the first act.

by Anonymousreply 7September 21, 2022 1:48 PM

Boring and the lead is a bad actor. They need to cast for talent again instead of "ooh, diversity!"

by Anonymousreply 8September 21, 2022 2:05 PM

It's not diverse; the actor isn't black.

by Anonymousreply 9September 21, 2022 7:24 PM

Oh, I forgot, R9. Many apologies.

by Anonymousreply 10September 21, 2022 7:43 PM

The series opener was... fine. Certainly not groundbreaking. I'll stick with it for a while and see if they can carve out a special voice for the show. It's not Must See TV yet, and I didn't get a sense that the show wanted to be anything more than just be an also-ran network show. I don't think that Raymond Lee is a bad actor. I actually think he was quite good. Not sure he can carry a show though. We'll see.

by Anonymousreply 11September 22, 2022 1:40 PM

Ok, watched the second episode. The writing is so awfully by-by-the-book. The plots are predictable, no surprises whatsoever. The dialogues feel like auto text. (And if you don't have the budget for a convincing episode in space, just write something else.) The acting (direction?) is not exactly groundbreaking either. I heard that the showrunner was replaced after a couple episodes. I am really curious if that improved the show. I want this show to succeed. Never watched the original show, so I don't have that for comparison. I like the concept though, so I'm willing to be a bit more patient.

The rookie drama from showrunner Martin Gero has earned an additional order for six more episodes at the broadcast network, bringing its season one tally to 18 episodes.

Quantum Leap becomes the first freshman series of the 2022-23 broadcast season to extend its season.

The series launched Sept. 19 to 3.35 million viewers. After three episodes, the Universal Television-produced drama is averaging just under 3 million total same-day viewers. The drama also ranks as the young broadcast seasonโ€™s No. 1 new show in the all-important adults 18-49 demographic, based on the most current data available.

Their stories are not very ambitious. But either I am getting used to it, or it's getting better. The plots are too Paint-by-numbers. But the latest plot twist at the end of the last episode gets me hope that stories can heat up if they just try.

by Anonymousreply 14October 19, 2022 1:01 PM

The biggest problem is that they spend way too much time in the "present" and less time on the story of the guy doing the leaps. While they pay lip service to figuring out why Sam never came back, this mystery ultimately adds a dimension to the leaps that was always left ambiguous - why did Sam leap into those particular people.

I'm also not certain that the guy doing the leaping is as adaptable an actor as Bakula was.

by Anonymousreply 15October 19, 2022 1:22 PM

R9 But one of the technicians is nonbinary!

by Anonymousreply 16October 19, 2022 1:36 PM

Well now, I have seen where he leaps into a boxer, ugh, and into a boring woman, dull. I found myself bored and wondering if he lept into a tranny, what that would be like. I think I will wait until I see who/what he is going to leap into before I watch another. I liked Scott much better.

by Anonymousreply 17October 19, 2022 1:44 PM

Bakula could sing!

Did you guys watch the Old West episode?

by Anonymousreply 19October 19, 2022 1:54 PM

Scott really turned me on with this look.

[quote]Bakula could sing!

I like him in the Man from La Mancha episode when he sings I, Don Quixote.

by Anonymousreply 22October 19, 2022 3:02 PM

There's just barely enough to keep me watching. Many scenes really feel like about the same quality/writing/sets of a CSI show ( and I don't say that as a complement ), but the little twists and turns are interesting and I'm curious to see where it goes. Like, the boss (the Ghostbusters guy) revealing that Scott Bakula had jumped into him when he was younger and that's why he re-opened the whole project. And then tonight's major twist, that someone else is leaping and knows who he is, and said 'STOP FOLLOWING ME". The added layer of the "present" and the mystery about why he's leaping adds and extra dimension to the show.

The little threads like the attacks on Ziggy and the other person in hiding that they're trying to find add layers of conspiracy and intrigue. It'll be interesting to see how they wrap them up, if they get to.

I wonder if the extra episode order was "Well, we're not going to give you a season two, sorry, but here's a few more episodes so you can wrap the show up"...

by Anonymousreply 23October 21, 2022 5:23 AM

No, I'm sure they ordered more episodes because CBS is OK with the ratings. If the ratings weren't that great they would just throw it off the schedule, maybe burn it on Saturday night. But they would not order more for a clean conclusion.

I like all what you mention, r23. I just wish it was all told in a more compelling way. The writing is just so damn plain. CBS seems to be hell-bent to air shows that don't require any mental commitment.

by Anonymousreply 24October 21, 2022 11:38 AM

Yes. It's very "plain". Or as I describe it, "It's very Network TV".

It's still infinitely better than "La Brea", which got a second season, and which was utterly terrible.

by Anonymousreply 25October 21, 2022 1:44 PM

I take it nobody's watching? Or if they are, they don't care enough to post about it?

It's a sequel, not really a reboot, and I think it's very much a network show. Like, quality-wise. I don't really mean that as a compliment. But there's just barely enough interesting twists in each episode that it keeps me coming back. I can't really recommend it unless you were REALLY into Quantum Leap, the original show. It builds on that. But I also can't seem to stop watching it.

by Anonymousreply 26November 12, 2022 3:41 AM

I have been watching it. It's been decent enough to keep me interested in it. I wish they would give more backstory to Al's daughter Janice.

by Anonymousreply 27November 12, 2022 3:47 AM

I'm still watching it. It has been growing on me even though it seems to be deliberately void of ambitions. But there isn't really much to say about it. The jump-stories are very by-the-book. And the big mystery is burning very, very slowly. On the plus side, I like the main character. He is quite puppy-like, and you don't want anything bad happening to him.

by Anonymousreply 28November 12, 2022 4:01 AM

Yeah, there's something very endearing about Raymond Lee. I really liked him on Kevin Can Fuck Himself.

by Anonymousreply 29November 12, 2022 4:05 AM

It's keeping me watching so it's doing something right. I agree, it's basic but not everything has to be misery-porn prestige TV.

by Anonymousreply 30November 12, 2022 6:16 AM

I think it is getting better. It can't be compared to the original. It is trying to be more of an ensemble show and things like Ziggy as the mole change the trajectory. I think for the next season they should have another cast member be the leaper and have Ben stay in the lab. Jen would be a great leaper.

by Anonymousreply 31April 3, 2023 1:08 AM

I'm like above posters. Not feeling hot about it. But it's charming just enough to have me keep watching. The overall arch story bores me. Every episode they find out something new about why Ben is leaping. But this new piece always seems to come out of somebody's ass. There isn't really much of a cohesive story that holds water.

On a story level the show needs to stir more emotions. The show has the advantage to be a crime story this time, a comedy next time and a love drama the episode after. They could cover a lot of story telling ground. But emotionally they tread water. It barely goes beyond momentary excitement no matter what type of story they tell.

For next season I hope they hire good writers and get a network liaison who is willing to approve taking more risks for the show.

by Anonymousreply 32April 3, 2023 1:25 AM

I havenโ€™t seen the new show. The original was a good show but I always had the nagging suspicion I tuned it in partly because Scott Bakula took his shirt off in most every episode. Kind of like Magnum P. I. which was also a good show to boot.
