WHET Martha Wash?
One of the greatest singers of the 90ms and naughts but then completely forgotten.
I even went to her NYC concert in the early 2000’s sometime—during gay pride week—and the theatre was only about half full. She sang to a tape—no live band. It was sad.

It was pathetic how bands kept stealing her vocals and pretending someone thing sang them—BlackBox, C&C Music Factory

Lord, that voice is anointed. One of the best to ever stand in front of a mic.

It's pretty telling how the industry always pulls these tricks on the public. Have a pretty face who can't sing and use other people's vocals to sell them. Never have that artist sing live and lipsync and lipsyncing was always common even since the advent of TV. MTV made it even worse because music videos made it all about selling sex. Martha is an incredible singer but she was not pretty, so the industry decided to hire some cute light skinned girl with green eyes to lip Martha's voice for the Black Box songs. The industry has always been fake and greedy.

Luff huh. I know she is still performing, and she has lost a lot of weight. She has talk show, or at least a podcast where interviews others. Go Martha!

And you’re less than zero, R10. A real rancid and diseased cunt. Just go away, no one will miss you and your toxic hate.

She wasn't ugly, she was just fat. Average nowadays

R12 She came around at a bad time. Today she'd have more success.

America could have totally handled a fat singer with a voice like that. Too bad the industry never gave her much of a chance to be herself

She hated to hear the phone ring in the 90s. It was often a friend saying "I'm so sorry Martha, it's happened again".

Authenticity is vastly overrated when it comes to pop music. The attractive people sold the shit out of those records through TV appearances, videos, being pretty on record/CD sleeves while Martha and Loleatta made a lot of money through royalties, certainly more so than had they had to sell their own records. And everybody won in the end.

R18, I'm doubting that Martha made much money at all.

The late Sylvester James sure did like her. I forget the name of the other lady, though.
Martha can fucking well sing!

Izora Armstead was the other ladies name.

I remember seeing them perform in a gay club back in the day. Sylvester was certainly ahead of his time.

She's still touring, she's just in her late 60's and never had a huge hit under her own name so she isn't much of a draw. Last big show I recall her doing was headlining Market Days in Chicago in 2018 (I think?).

I remember seeing her then as well, R23. Here' s a clip:

Here’s a 30 minute interview/mini-documentary about Wash.
Didn’t know she did much of the vocals for Rebe Jackson’s Centipede song too.
