I can't believe how middle America she looks. I shouldn't be surprised - it happens to previously pretty, thin women from all walks of life. How do you end up the kind of person who sees a fat lady and immediately believes there's some kind of secret Satanic pathology conspiracy that's keeping her imprisoned and force fed? One who bumps six-month-old threads about it just to bring it up again, for no reason?

We don’t know if she struggled to stay thin when she was young. I was thin when I was young, stayed slim to normal my whole adult life until right around menopause. I gained 80 pounds in about 4 years. It wasn’t just menopause, but I only realized after the fact that my mom put on a ton of weight (probably also 80 pounds) right around the same age.

Menopause doesn’t physically cause huge weight gain but, for some, I think it can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. I was also drinking too much and in a shitty job I really hated. The entire time I was gaining I would buy new clothes slightly too small thinking that in two weeks I would fit into them, and then never wore them. I started working from home pre-zoom calls, so that didn’t help. Then I lost the WFH option and had a shitty commute and since I’d already gained a lot and I was in my 50’s, the long day and commute were more uncomfortable and I would be frustrated and tired at the end of the day and have a beer on the train and then just start eating when I got home. There were definitely days I ran errands dressed similarly (or worse) than Fonda. But I was no where near that big - I looked like a “typical” middle aged American. IOW, pretty darn fat. She looks mobility-impaired.

I lost 40-45 and kept it off for a year by eliminating stresses from my life and making it my number one priority. Now I’ve lost another 5-10 on generic Ozempic and I’m at a new job I don’t hate. But it’s a long slog and at my age it’s not like I have looking super hot as a reward at the end. One reason I was able to do it was because I have only myself to worry about. I could do things like go to a weight loss spa for a week and stock my home with ONLY foods that were healthy and not too caloric. I could go to the gym and not worry about spending time with a child. It didn’t matter if I got a little cranky because I wasn’t taking it out in anyone. Anyway, I can sort of see how she might have gotten to where she is. I didn’t have an underlying health issue outside of the drinking, but she probably does. You just keep telling yourself you will deal with it tomorrow.

OTOH, she does have the resources to go all out and address it.
