I still don't see what was so good about Sinatra. I'm old, but never saw what people used to say that he was a master of phrasing. To me, he had a mediocre voice, but was popular because people were afraid of saying anything bad about him. The Trump of singers.

Josh Groban, Bieber, Chris Brown, and any number of other male pop singers. None of the listed were that special. Frank's eyes were his lucky charm. He was so pretty in his prime.

Johnny Mathis

What R22 said. Even Sinatra said Bennett was the best. He was certainly the most consistent.
Sinatra lost his voice from about 1950-1953 or so, then again in the late 60's, then retired in '71, unfortunately came back 2 years later and had a hit with "My Way" in 1980. He was toast by 1984 or so, but his name kept bringing in the suckers until 1990 or so.
Meanwhile, during all those decades, Tony Bennett kept his voice -- until about 5-10 years ago or so.
Sinatra could NEVER sing like this...

Matt Monro.
"Born Free . . ."
The song of course got the Oscar but his singing did the winning.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | September 16, 2022 5:21 PM |
We sang Born Free in so many chorus concerts when I was a boy.

Something about the vocalizations of the very best of the best: They just get burned into your memory, forever.
"Strangers in the night . . ."

"Hello-o-o Dolly . . ."

I'm not a country fan but have always loved the voice of Johnny Cash.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | September 16, 2022 6:55 PM |
Michael Buble is popular and he does quite well on tours. I think Groban is technically the best, but Buble has the style that made the Rat Pack popular.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 16, 2022 7:03 PM |
Sinatra hands down.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 16, 2022 7:11 PM |
Josh Groban is disgusting. I didn’t know men listened to him even gay ones.
I don’t feel you’re an amazing vocalist if only a small audience can tolerate you.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | September 16, 2022 8:05 PM |
R79, whether you like him or not, he's sold a lot of albums.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | September 16, 2022 8:11 PM |

Josh Groban. He sings like an angel.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | September 20, 2022 2:21 AM |
Elvis and Dino had the kind of silvery voices that just glided out of their mouths all smooth and honeyed and seductive. BION, Clay had this vocal ease in his 2003 prime.
Freddie, Steve Perry, and Adam Lambert had/have the kind of big-range powerful voices that easily soar from soft to bombastic.
Pavarotti had the full-lung profound voice that gave incredible depth to any note.
Frankie Valli, Smokey, David Ruffin, and Bobby Hatfield had/have the impossible sweet high notes that thrill in their androgyny.
And the great Levi Stubbs had the soul.

Brendon Urie
