I still don't see what was so good about Sinatra. I'm old, but never saw what people used to say that he was a master of phrasing. To me, he had a mediocre voice, but was popular because people were afraid of saying anything bad about him. The Trump of singers.

by Anonymousreply 20September 15, 2022 11:26 PM

Johnny Mathis

by Anonymousreply 21September 15, 2022 11:31 PM

Among those, Tony Bennett by a mile. Sinatra was a celebrity but never really a great singer.

Where's Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Peabo Bryson and Luther Vandross on your list OP?

by Anonymousreply 22September 15, 2022 11:33 PM

nat king cole, the leader singer of "the platters", david gates, art garfunkel, steve perry, countless great singers out there from the decades....

by Anonymousreply 31September 16, 2022 12:05 AM

Prince who is probably my favorite artist could not sing better than Michael Jackson. He among many is a glaring omission from this list.

Freddie Mercury, Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Don Henley, Elton John????

by Anonymousreply 32September 16, 2022 1:08 AM

George Michael.

by Anonymousreply 33September 16, 2022 1:13 AM

Bobby Hatfield (Righteous Brothers/Unchained Melody guy)

by Anonymousreply 36September 16, 2022 1:29 AM

What an odd assortment. But since you have several jazz/standard singers listed, you should add Nat King Cole, Bobby Darrin and the Velvet Fog, Mel Torme.

by Anonymousreply 37September 16, 2022 1:34 AM

Luis Miguel!!!!

by Anonymousreply 38September 16, 2022 1:40 AM

and Dean Martin. How could I forget him?

by Anonymousreply 56September 16, 2022 8:03 AM

What R22 said. Even Sinatra said Bennett was the best. He was certainly the most consistent.

Sinatra lost his voice from about 1950-1953 or so, then again in the late 60's, then retired in '71, unfortunately came back 2 years later and had a hit with "My Way" in 1980. He was toast by 1984 or so, but his name kept bringing in the suckers until 1990 or so.

Meanwhile, during all those decades, Tony Bennett kept his voice -- until about 5-10 years ago or so.

Sinatra could NEVER sing like this...

Matt Monro.

"Born Free . . ."

The song of course got the Oscar but his singing did the winning.

R31, I love Levi Stubbs

by Anonymousreply 69September 16, 2022 5:27 PM

Where's Stevie and Marvin?

by Anonymousreply 70September 16, 2022 5:29 PM

Another vote for both Nat King Cole and Sam Cooke. Absolute masters of phrasing and interpretation as well.

by Anonymousreply 71September 16, 2022 5:31 PM

Something about the vocalizations of the very best of the best: They just get burned into your memory, forever.

"Strangers in the night . . ."

"Smile, though your heart is aching . . ."

"Hello-o-o Dolly . . ."

by Anonymousreply 75September 16, 2022 6:03 PM

I'm not a country fan but have always loved the voice of Johnny Cash.

by Anonymousreply 76September 16, 2022 6:55 PM

Michael Buble is popular and he does quite well on tours. I think Groban is technically the best, but Buble has the style that made the Rat Pack popular.

by Anonymousreply 77September 16, 2022 7:03 PM

Sinatra hands down.

by Anonymousreply 78September 16, 2022 7:11 PM

Josh Groban is disgusting. I didn’t know men listened to him even gay ones.

I don’t feel you’re an amazing vocalist if only a small audience can tolerate you.

by Anonymousreply 79September 16, 2022 8:05 PM

R79, whether you like him or not, he's sold a lot of albums.

by Anonymousreply 80September 16, 2022 8:11 PM

Elvis and Dino had the kind of silvery voices that just glided out of their mouths all smooth and honeyed and seductive. BION, Clay had this vocal ease in his 2003 prime.

Freddie, Steve Perry, and Adam Lambert had/have the kind of big-range powerful voices that easily soar from soft to bombastic.

Pavarotti had the full-lung profound voice that gave incredible depth to any note.

Frankie Valli, Smokey, David Ruffin, and Bobby Hatfield had/have the impossible sweet high notes that thrill in their androgyny.

And the great Levi Stubbs had the soul.

by Anonymousreply 96September 20, 2022 6:40 AM

Brendon Urie

by Anonymousreply 97September 21, 2022 10:04 AM

I would say to the older crowd names from the last 80 years would draw a blank. Dementia.
