Marine sentenced to 10 years for Jan 6 riot

Webster, a 20-year NYPD veteran and Marine veteran, was the first Capitol riot defendant to be tried on an assault charge and the first to present a self-defense argument. A jury rejected Webster’s claim that he was defending himself when he tackled Metropolitan Police Department officer Noah Rathbun and grabbed his gas mask outside the Capitol on Jan. 6.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Webster, 56, to 10 years in prison plus three years of supervised release. He allowed Webster to report to prison at a date to be determined instead of immediately ordering him into custody.

Defense attorney James Monroe said in a court filing that the mob was “guided by unscrupulous politicians” and others promoting the lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from the Republican incumbent. He questioned why prosecutors argued that Webster didn’t deserve leniency for his 25 years of service to his country and New York City.

“That is not how we measure justice. That is revenge,” Monroe said. In May, jurors deliberated for less than three hours before they convicted Webster of all six counts in his indictment, including a charge that he assaulted Rathbun with a dangerous weapon, the flagpole.

by Anonymousreply 13September 15, 2022 2:00 PM

It always strikes me with disbelief, when I read or hear about these sentences that are being handed down, how absolutely ridiculous and stupid these 1/6 insurrection participants are.

Who? Who in their right mind, ever even for one second, consider participating in something so hateful, based on the ramblings of one of the best known conmen in modern American history?

And even more surprising is that some of these idiots are really well educated. They even convicted a doctor several weeks back.

Now the world knows that at least 30% of Americans can be easily targeted and manipulated in order for interested, nefarious parties to get the exact results they want.

And if DeSantis gets ahead any further in his political career ambitions? We’re toast , as our public education system barely operates properly, even if adequately so.

by Anonymousreply 14September 15, 2022 2:24 PM

R29, the Marine Corp. recruiters are known to test potential recruits psychologically.

Generally, they want recruits from trouble backgrounds which focus on childhood, family dynamics.

They seek young recruits who were abandoned, neglected and who witnessed or were subjected to child abuse/trauma.

Allegedly, these traits indicate a highly malleable individual, who is seeking to resolve their childhood trauma, via models of strong codependency components.

The January 6th insurrection was a completely political, partisan act with the participants interested only in installing an unelected Republican president.

The BLM protests were completely Apolitical, with the intention of protesting against police brutality, racism and social injustice.

Unless perhaps you want to make the argument that the BLM protests *were* actually political, and thereby that the Republican Party is completely uninterested in fighting police brutality, racism and social injustice? Because that's fine too, you know, if you want to just flat out admit it.

Russia’s pro-Trump electoral interference campaign in 2016 was “part of a broader, sophisticated, and ongoing information warfare campaign designed to sow discord in American politics and society,” according to a Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) report released in 2019.

“No single group” was targeted more on social media by Russian disinformation than black Americans, according to the same report — with the majority of the posts on Russian accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube centering on racial issues.

Much of the content on these accounts focused on police violence. In 2016, Russian accounts also encouraged black Americans not to vote at all or to cast a protest vote for a third-party candidate for president.

According to the SSCI report, in 2016, the Internet Research Agency (IRA), a state-backed Russian troll farm and disinformation shop, was particularly focused on issues surrounding race and content aimed at black Americans.

On Facebook, 66% of the IRA ads were related to race, and its location targeting “was principally aimed at African Americans in key metropolitan areas,” according to the report.

In the late 2010s, researchers found that increases in Russian disinformation activity on Twitter were correlated with increases in polarising conversations regarding the Black Lives Matter movement.

One such activity included Russian accounts mimicking Black Lives Matter activists, or supported issues central to the Black Lives Matter cause.

Activities on Facebook include purchasing ads to promote Black Lives Matter.

Reporting by investigative journalists uncovered Russian links with Facebook pages promoting Black Lives Matter.

In one instance, Russian activities on social media led to real-life protests on behalf of Black Lives Matter.

Prior to this development, in 2010, a report commissioned for the United States Senate Intelligence Committee, the Russian firm Internet Research Agency was identified as creating social media accounts as part of a complex campaign to suppress the black American vote.

However, subsequently, investigative journalists found that the Russian firm sought to promote the issue of Black Lives Matter in order to instigate mistrust in US law enforcement and political institutions.

Often, the purpose of these actions included race-baiting.

Soviet media has criticized racial inequality and violence in the United States since at least 1930s, often using this argument to deflect criticism aimed at the human rights abuses in the USSR, or to create a sense of false moral equivalency between the two states.

Lynchings of African Americans were brought up as an embarrassing skeleton in the closet for the U.S., which the Soviets used as a form of rhetorical ammunition when reproached for their own perceived economic and social failings.

This became known as the "And you are lynching Negroes" argument, later described as whataboutism, and continued during the Cold War and beyond.

Lynchings of African Americans were brought up as an embarrassing skeleton in the closet for the US, which the Soviets used as a form of rhetorical ammunition when reproached for their own perceived economic and social failings.

After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the phrase became widespread as a reference to Russian information-warfare tactics.

Its use subsequently became widespread in Russia to criticize any form of US policy.

Russian operatives created hundreds of fake personas linked to social media accounts and began posting content that related to two different aspects of the Black Lives Matter movement. Russia’s online disinformation campaign in 2016 had far-reaching influence.

Facebook believes 126 million people may have seen Russian propaganda on its platform connected to 2016.

Twitter has said 1.4 million of its users were exposed to Russian disinformation.

Russian operatives created Facebook groups and organized rallies and demonstrations around these fake groups.

In one case, Russian operatives scheduled dueling protests on the same day in Houston, causing Muslim civil rights activists to square off with anti-Muslim Texas secessionists.

Footage from the event shows an anti-Muslim protestor waving the Confederate flag while others hold a banner that reads “White Lives Matter.”

Russian trolls even created a fake group called “Don’t Shoot Us,” which posed as a Black Lives Matter affiliate and operated on multiple social media platforms.

Stewart Rhodes, founder of Oath Keepers, was charged with seditious conspiracy in connection to the Capitol riot.

His estranged wife Tasha Adams said that he is a "complete sociopath."

Adams said that she felt Rhodes was personally dangerous to her and her family, and also to the country.

The estranged wife of Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the far-right group Oath Keepers, said he is a "complete sociopath."

Rhodes' wife Tasha Adams made the comments in an interview with CNN on Friday, a day after Rhodes was charged with seditious conspiracy in connection to the Capitol riot.

Insider's Oma Seddiq and Sonam Sheth wrote that it's the most significant arrest yet and marks the first time that federal prosecutors have brought sedition charges in connection to the Justice Department's sprawling investigation into the deadly January 6, 2021, Capitol siege.

Adams said she was relieved to hear he was indicted, as she "lived in fear" of him showing up at her house.

"Knowing we were safe and my kids were safe and my kids' school doesn't have to worry, that was a relief I didn't know existed," she said.

Adams told CNN host John Berman that she felt Rhodes was dangerous to her and her family, and the country.

"He is very dangerous. He lives very much in his own head," Adams said on CNN.

"He sees himself as a great leader. He almost has his own mythology of himself and I think he almost made it come true, seeing himself as some sort of figure in history, and it sort of happened."

"He's a complete sociopath. He does not feel empathy for anyone around him at all," she added.

Elmer Stewart Rhodes — a 56-year-old former U.S. Army paratrooper and Yale Law School graduate from Granbury, Texas — founded the Oath Keepers, a far-right militia group, in 2009 in response to the election of President Barack Obama.

With a signature patch covering an eye he lost from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound, Rhodes rose to prominence as a guest on Alex Jones's Infowars program.

He also came into the national spotlight in 2014 when the Oath Keepers took part in the armed confrontation between supporters of cattle rancher Cliven Bundy and federal law enforcement at Bundy's Nevada ranch.

U.S. rangers are rounding up Bundy's cattle, claiming he has been illegally grazing his herds on 600,000 acres of federal lands for two decades. The Bureau of Land Management, or BLM, said Bundy's unpaid land use fees total more than $1 million.

Bundy said he doesn't have to pay because he has no contract with the federal government.

Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of his sons was arrested while protesting the removal of the cattle.

Bundy advocated for limited federal government involvement in local affairs, particularly in ranching.

Bundy supported the ideas of the sovereign citizen movement. Many of the adherents of the movement argue that the federal government is illegitimate and does not have jurisdiction over individuals, meaning that laws do not apply to them.

Bundy had asked for the support of members of the Oath Keepers, the White Mountain Militia, and the Praetorian Guard.

Cliven Bundy has said he does not recognize federal police power over land that he believes belongs to the "sovereign state of Nevada."

You're squatting on government lands and refuse to pay for access to the lands and the water.

You are a deadbeat and a welfare queen.

Wish every MAGA asshole who was in DC on Jan 6th could be locked up.

That would teach these easily swayed morons a lesson, don't believe a failed real estate mogul, an evil delusional man who is nothing but a grifter.

Drumpf is a disgusting vile man who is always trying to enrich his own life through using others. That's been his MO for his entire life. This creep even cheated in school. All his gains have been through using others.

Drumpf is nothing but a hateful orange menace who does not give a shit about his followers or even his own family.

[quote] How often do civilians convicted of assaulting a cop get to “choose” when they begin to serve their sentences?

This is common practice in federal court. They choose a date down the road for you to surrender yourself to a facility.
