Presidents come and go in the White House
But the staff remains for decades
Why can't it be the same for the palace?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 13, 2022 9:35 PM |
Realistically, either his staff or the Queen's were going to be let go. I'm surprised that he chose his, rather than letting the Queen's go...suggests to me that the Queen's staff may know a lot more than anyone is comfortable to let wander about disgruntled.
It's a strange move in that his "interests" and things he supposed won't change.
Also, won't William and Kate's staffs increase as they take on new responsibilities?
It does make sense to streamline the staff and reduce costs - on the surface. However, doing so in this manner so soon was always going to make people very unhappy. He should have initially simply made an announcement AFTER the 10 days mourning period that the staff of the Queen and his staff would have to be merged and streamlined - something any rational person would expect.
Elizabeth would never have made this type of mistake. The PR debacle with Diana reflects Charles's immaturity and petulance. This behavior will come back to bite him. He had small window both as the new sovereign and for his mother dying - whether he was close to her or not, most people ascribe filial love to children when their mother has died.
He blew it.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 13, 2022 9:36 PM |
I hope he lives 30+ more years. He needs to cut out all meat and dairy. Lower salt. More ev olive oil.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 13, 2022 9:37 PM |
But Major Johnny stays, RIGHT?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 13, 2022 9:37 PM |
With the Queen and Phillip dead, they need no servants. He will employ some of theirs and some of his existing and the rest let go. How does this not make sense to everyone. If I died today, my gardener and house cleaner would no longer get money from my family. Same thing.

by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 13, 2022 9:38 PM |
r25 Charles is taking some staff with him to the palace, William will take a large amount since he's heir now, some will go to other people, and yeah a few will get made redundant. Its less a mass firing than it is a job review. The main problem with it is the timing since it makes him look pretty bad all things considered.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 13, 2022 9:39 PM |
[quote]How does this not make sense to everyone.
It's the TIMING that's the problem, babe.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 13, 2022 9:39 PM |
[quote]Presidents come and go in the White House...But the staff remains for decades...Why can't it be the same for the palace?
Staff of a more personal nature or specific to the President would always change - personal secretaries, chefs, and such.
Also, you have to figure that Elizabeth had a lot more assistance, given her age, than he or Cammy might need for several years.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 13, 2022 9:40 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 13, 2022 9:41 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 13, 2022 9:43 PM |
He’s letting his staff go because he no longer needs them in Clarence House where he lived as Prince. Sounds sensible to me.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 13, 2022 9:44 PM |
This was covered in the other thread. He has to move operations to BP which is now his official residence. There is already a staff there.
As his official staff are supported by the taxpayers, it would be a bad look to keep them on for sentiment's sake. They will receive consideration from other royal households, and an enhanced payment beyond what is legally mandated.
You can't bring 100 staffers to the new place that already has staffers. He isn't Henry VIII moving from one pissed off earl's home to another as he travels round the kingdom eating them out of house and home and fucking their wives, daughters, and housemaids.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 13, 2022 9:45 PM |
Who paid the staff anyway? the government, or Charles?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 13, 2022 9:46 PM |
R40 Oh, we can tell you that: some went to the then-Cambridges, others went back into service for the Palace, which had loaned them out to help the Sussexes.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 13, 2022 9:54 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 13, 2022 9:54 PM |
I find it hard to believe that they had no idea this was coming.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 13, 2022 9:55 PM |
I get they’re royalty, whatever that really means, but when I look at this situation, with a modern eye, I’m truly not surprised Harry left, by any means necessary. Even in wealthy American families, assets are distributed pretty evenly; to live your life knowing you have no place in the scheme of things, you are not the heir and you’re entitled to nothing really, must be tough. It’s an archaic system and I’m not surprised so many were murdered in these situations.

by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 13, 2022 9:57 PM |
Why would they, R53? There’s a new Prince & Princess of Wales that needs staff to guide them in their new roles and home/offices.
This is Charles sabotaging others, as per usual.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 13, 2022 9:57 PM |
r53 do you really think anyone was allowed to have a serious conversation about what happens to my job when the Queen dies? Charles certainly wouldn't have spoken to anyone but his most trusted advisors and maybe the Queen's. But I doubt the royal household is an open door policy type of employer where you can ask about what's next when the Queen dies.
I very much can understand why everyone besides those at the top were left in the dark. I would think that he'd kick out some palace staff but I was wrong.

Diana former butler once wrote that Charles dropped some papers on the floor - and called him to come upstairs to pick them up for him
by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 13, 2022 10:00 PM |
On a side note: I used to like that Royal Butler guy on youtube who gives royal etiquette classes. Mostly because I love a Scottish accent and also because I too have dachshunds.
He has always stated the reason he left Charles employ was because he was "made redundant".
However, upon further investigation, it turns out he worked at Charles country home. When Charles moved mainly to his London home and brought his staff along with him the Royal Butler guy refused to go citing a fear of big cities. He was in turn let go since he wouldn't make the move. He in turn sued Charles and Charles ended up settling. Funny thing is, Royal Butler guy travels all over the world to BIG CITIES giving etiquette classes and doing tv interviews.
The Queen also sued him for using "Royal Buter" in the name of his business. I don't know that the outcome of that lawsuit.
In conclusion, I am over Royal Butler guy Grant whatshisname because I don't like scammers.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 13, 2022 10:02 PM |
The staff following him around during all these proclamations are seriously amateur hour, including that hot guy in a kilt. They let Charles complain in front of a live camera. How the heck to do you let the new king, who you should know is a man-baby, complain about a pen on a live feed. Just get him a regular pen and stop with this old fashioned ink well shit.
I agree, they took their sweet time removing the ink well which was strike one & two. Today was strike three. Cute kilt boy needs to go cause he clearly has few brains for royal service in his pretty little head.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 13, 2022 10:02 PM |
Are we to believe Clarence House will now sit empty with no staff?
After the tens millions Charles spent remodeling it?
And then there's the ongoing renovation of Buckingham Palace, which is costing hundreds of millions.
But you there with the broom, get your bleeding ass out!
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 13, 2022 10:05 PM |
A lot of that staff would have been almost as old as the Queen. She couldn't bear to force anyone to retire.

R54...they left because Meghan is a raging cunt who expected to be treated like the Queen herself. She never wanted to follow protocol and instead cried racism every time someone tried to correct or teach her how royalty is to behave. Not our Meghan, no, she couldnt accept the fact she really had no standing and Kate was destined to be Queen, not her bff...and Kate treated her accordingly...which pissed her off even more. She is an immature, petulant child. Harry should have dumped her ass the minute she came between him and his family (its coming, but not for a few more years...shes going to fuck up big time)
by Anonymous | reply 90 | September 13, 2022 11:09 PM |
r70 this wont save the tax payers any money. The staff is paid for from the sum of the money given to the RF. So the family saved money but not a cent till go back to the British public.
Even if this did save money, there is a way to do this. People were saying protesting during the Queen's mourning is wrong. I think firing royal staff while they too are grieving and working hard to coordinate the transition is also bad. He could have waiting until next week.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | September 13, 2022 11:10 PM |
Im sure he didnt terminate the effective immediately. He probably gave them 2 weeks or a month. There are things that still need to be done to close up shop per say.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | September 13, 2022 11:12 PM |
Buckingham Palace is being repurposed as a high end horse stable/tampon stand.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | September 13, 2022 11:15 PM |
I don't think he actually terminated anybody at all yet r92. There was a notification that a lot of people will not be continuing in their present role. There is a lot of talk about severance pay, about finding other positions, still in royal service somewhere, for a lot of people, ultimately. I'm not saying it doesn't suck to get a notification like that, but it is not true that 100 people have just been thrown out on their ass.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | September 13, 2022 11:15 PM |
Something similar happened in the 90s when Charles and Diana separated. The other members of the family took most of the staff that were rendered redundant.
With Elizabeth and Phillip dead, the Sussexes out of the country and not working for the Firm, and the need to cut costs (maybe Charles doesn’t want someone playing the bagpipes every morning under his bedroom window the way Elizabeth did), the royal family is overstaffed.
There was a butler who had been with Charles and Diana for years, and had spent his adult life working for the family. Diana fired him without notice because she felt he was a Charles loyalist. Her Kensington Palace neighbor, Princess Michael of Kent, tried to hire him, and Diana pulled rank and blocked the appointment. Then Margaret offered to hire him. Diana backed off because she was scared of Margaret.
I imagine neighbors Margaret, Princess Michael and Diana hated each other and spied on and hissed at each other all the time after the separation, like a geriatric version of Melrose Place.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | September 13, 2022 11:18 PM |
All well, either way this is bad PR. Because someone should really wonder why two old people who aren't the king and queen needed 100+ staff. Same for William and Kate who also have a small army of staff, it's madness.

r105 Charles has taken 5 private jets around the UK in the past few days. He's not environmentally conscious with himself. A leader should lead by example. Everywhere he's gone has public flights he could take and every event will wait for the King's arrival. So in essence, Charles is full of shit and/or the UK is clearly having financial issues.
We all watched on the news as Charles/Camilla or the Queen's corps get floe from one place to another on private or military jets. The go green shit from the Brits right now is a joke.

I suspect this is being a little overplayed. It’s probably like when a company gets acquired and there are obvious redundancies. Once the merger is announced, people want to know, you can’t just leave them hanging. Sure, Charles may have known for decades that he would leave Clarence House when QE died, but he’s not going to tell his staff in advance. They would have all started quitting when she was only 85. But they must have all had an inkling this could happen. They were probably going nuts asking what was going to happen, so something had to be communicated.

Perfectly normal, and efforts are being made to find new employment for those made redundant.
"In his letter, seen by the Guardian, Alderton wrote: “The change in role for our principals will also mean change for our household … The portfolio of work previously undertaken in this household supporting the former Prince of Wales’s personal interests, former activities and household operations will no longer be carried out, and the household … at Clarence House will be closed down. It is therefore expected that the need for the posts principally based at Clarence House, whose work supports these areas will no longer be needed.”
Long story short with once The Prince and Princess of Wales now having moved up, Clarence House is now surplus to their requirements. Staff not personally attached the HM and Queen Camilla are being let go.

Clarence House having long served as residence for Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales will now be shut down as that occupant leaves for Buckingham Palace and other residences of the sovereign.
This happens all the time when heirs finally inherit throne.
Clarence House may still be used in future as a grace and favor residence for other members of BRF. It may come to pass that the Prince and Princess of Wales will be given the place to use as their residence in London.

HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, the Princess Margaret, and the Prince William (before his marriage) are all among royals who have lived at Clarence House in recent memory.
It wouldn't be surprising if Prince of Wales again is given Clarence House for use as London residence for HRH and family.

Depending upon what sources one wishes to believe, HM and the Queen will make Buckingham Palace their home in London, through HM as said there is no rush about making move.
Buckingham Palace is a big drafty barn of a place (had rodent issues in past), and not at all a home sort of place. But is is considered the official London residence of sovereign so like it or not HM may have to move in, if only to use place as an "office" so to speak.
HM the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh apparently weren't keen on moving into BP, but were similarly informed it is the sovereign's London residence so....

by Anonymous | reply 151 | September 14, 2022 12:49 AM |
Before William and Kate moved into the big place at KP, there was some very extensive modifications.
At the time, it was agreed by W & K that they would remain in KP until such time as W takes the throne.
I'm not sure why C&C are so quick to move into BP from Clarence House. I thought BP was undergoing a lot of long delayed maintenance and repairs, including extensive asbestos. In addition to that, the whole Royal Family hated BP. The poster up thread who used "barn" to describe BP

For those unfamiliar while it is possible to do so without, majority of employment in UK is by contract. If something is going to end that contact sooner than it would have expired normally, employee must be given adequate notice. Employment contracts are pretty common all over Europe.
This is in contrast to United States where most local laws favor at-will employment. Simply put an employer can terminate an employee anytime for any reason without having to establish just cause. Long as reason for termination isn't illegal (such as discrimination), that is that.

He didn’t fire them.
In the UK, when you are undertaking staff reductions, you have to go through the consultation process.
Every employee in affected areas receive notice that their jobs MAY be affected. Doesn’t mean they are.
by Anonymous | reply 189 | September 14, 2022 8:57 AM |
No idea whether this is really true or not, but one of the British commentators currently infesting Australian TV via live cross claimed the other night that William and Kate have office staff but almost no household staff. She said they have a cleaner, but they cook for themselves.
Now, no matter how hands-on Kate is with the kids you've got to assume they have a nanny, if only as a built-in babysitter when Royal engagements occur outside school hours or take them overseas, and similarly there has to be someone to cook for the kids when they're absent, but apparently it is a very small retinue by Royal standards. So the entire staff of Windsor Castle will still be required, one assumes. They can't go on without household staff to run a palace.
by Anonymous | reply 190 | September 14, 2022 8:58 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 192 | September 14, 2022 10:15 AM |
Charles has fired no-one. What he has done is inform his staff that the new reign will lead to job changes or some redundancies (analogous to the process that happens when one US presidential administration comes to an end and another begins).
Under UK law, an employer should provide notice to employees if he/she is just considering redundancies. This is known as the consultation period.
Charles is trying to redeploy the staff across the Royal households and estates, but he has followed best practice by ensuring that any that won’t/can’t are being given adequate warning and very generous redundancy packages, so by all accounts they’re being well looked after as far as I can tell.

I find it hard to believe Kate and William don't have a cook, for logical reasons, and I theorize they will be in a bigger place - Windsor Castle probably as renovations aren't needed - within the year. Their new roles, the visibility required by the new reign, makes it kind of impractical to imagine William or Kate home in time to cook dinner. Adelaide Cottage is four bedrooms... so if they are up country or away overnight, is the Nanny going to sleep on the couch or in their bed? A house like they're in doesn't seem like it's up to the job. It's one thing to strive to create the emotional aspect of happy Middletons and that's smart but to try to live like it seems impractical.

Are you trolling or just in your cynicism gone notably stupid?
Assuming - generously - there is a fleet of these secure electric vehicles plugged in around London at the moment, he doesn't sit around deciding which vehicles go where. As in all things, experts present him with a plan, which he signs off on, generally with advice from his Private Secretary and other experts based on their review of the plan. But your picky parsing says you don't give a damn about the environmental argument as much as taking a run at the whole thing. Which is fine, but why not have the character just to say what you're really thinking or feeling, rather than cloaking it in badly argued bullshit?

The Prince and Princess of Wales have said going forward they wish to give their children a normal as possible upbringing.
As part of move to new digs, their nanny will live out in aide of above effort. Still a full time employee and paid as such, one assumes Nanny Borrallo will assist largely with youngest child (Prince Louis) since the other two are now at school all day. This and of course being on hand for things like minding the royal children when their parents are out or away.
