He died from complications from surgery. You have no idea what surgery it was or whether it would have been necessary to have said surgery if his life had taken such a radically different turn.
He could just as easily have died of something else while cheeto was in office. Would he have been better than Thomas who was nominated just before his other gig - who knows. Would he have been better than Alito - tough call. Better than Roberts - definitely not.

The first obvious partisan investigation of a high ranking elected official. Starr was appointed to follow one goose chasing investigation after another trying to find something to pin on Bill Clinton, and at last they got him about lying about a consensual affair. For Republicans that is an impeachable affair. However obstruction of justice, coercing Ukraine president to make lies about a bogus investigation to receive congressionally approved funds, insurrection, overturning an election, stealing top secret government files do not matter.

by Anonymous | reply 102 | September 14, 2022 11:50 AM |
R87 that’s not how history works. Once you change something in the past, nothing about the future is guaranteed. For example, if Starr had been appointed to the court instead of Roberts he might have lived to be 90 because he might have chosen to have his surgery done at a DC hospital. Or maybe he would have tripped down the SCOTUS stairs or been killed in a car accident on his way to work in DC in 2008 or 2018.
My dad likes to imagine that his football team would have won a game if only an interception hadn’t been thrown in the first half, or if only a field goal kick early in the game hadn’t gone a few feet wide, but that’s just not how it works. Once you change the outcome of one play, everything from that point forward potentially changes. Engaging in “what ifs” about history is fun, and it’s fine to imagine what SCOTUS would have been like if Starr rather than Roberts or Alito had been nominated in a universe in which nobody ever heard of Monica Lewinsky, but you can’t really extend the hypothetical to his death. The timing and manner of his death might have been radically different in that “what if” scenario.

Yes, dear. I know which is why I said he was nominated just BEFORE he started his gig since the implication was that he was on track, so would have been among the names floated, but his taking the special prosecutor role nixed any future possibility of that happening.

[bold]Ken Starr, Who Turned a Blind Eye to Rape and Defended a Sex Trafficker, Dead at 76[/bold]
KENNETH STARR, THE lawyer known for investigating Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky, mishandling sexual assault cases as president of Baylor University, and helping Jeffrey Epstein secure a sweetheart deal, died Tuesday, Sept. 13. He was 76.
Starr’s family confirmed his death, saying he died from complications from surgery at St. Luke’s Medical center in Houston, Texas.
Starr was a stalwart conservative foot soldier throughout his career. He started as a lawyer and was nominated by Ronald Reagan to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1983, a post he maintained for about six years before resigning. George H.W. Bush later appointed him solicitor general, and he was even briefly in the running to fill a Supreme Court vacancy later taken by David Souter.

Ken Starr really was a nasty piece of shit.
Lewinsky would recall with horror being interrogated for hours in 1998 by Starr's prosecutors — but not Starr himself — and threatened with prison if she didn't cooperate with their investigation, a demand she initially refused. Months later, she agreed to testify about the affair, and turned over to prosecutors a dress stained with the president's semen, in return for immunity.
Lewinsky remembered finally encountering Starr in person, at a Greenwich Village restaurant the previous Christmas Eve. Starr stepped forward with a “warm, incongruous smile,” and introduced himself to Lewinsky, who was dining with her family.
“Ken Starr asked me several times if I was ‘doing O.K.’ A stranger might have surmised from his tone that he had actually worried about me over the years. His demeanor, almost pastoral, was somewhere between avuncular and creepy. He kept touching my arm and elbow, which made me uncomfortable,” she wrote.
"I turned and introduced him to my family. Bizarre as it may sound, I felt determined, then and there, to remind him that, 20 years before, he and his team of prosecutors hadn’t hounded and terrorized just me but also my family — threatening to prosecute my mom (if she didn’t disclose the private confidences I had shared with her), hinting that they would investigate my dad’s medical practice, and even deposing my aunt, with whom I was eating dinner that night."

back then I remember hearing assholes boast about reading the Starr report three times.
No, sir. You read the "good parts" more than once, you didn't read the report entirely. Ever. There was no need to read the deceased's report because the media reported the juicy prints in salacious detail.
As thorough Ken Star was to faithfully document President Clinton's liaisons, he refused to follow-up with a student who reported a rape on campus.
Think about it.

Thank you, r147. Americans seem to think it was Bill Clinton who foisted lurid descriptions upon us, when their publication was solely the work of Ken Starr and his little band of Inquisitors.

r119 Do clarify as to how you believe it's a false equivalent.

Vile, hypocritical, extreme partisanship.
Janet Reno, the AG then, was terrible at the job. Clinton just had to pick a woman for the AG. Two other women nominees got withdrawn due to controversies; very mild issues compared to what gets approved today.

Starr died 25 years too late. Disgusting piece of shit.

For anyone who might still think he was a fair dispenser of justice, just doing his job, his defense of Trump should dispense of that. To think that Clinton was deserving of impeachment, but Trump’s offense fell short is quite an indictment of Starr.

He was a typically prurient Puritan.

R153... he was a typical secret dirty pervert into kink "thou doth protest too much" should be his epitaph!....

Ken Starr is the reason we have page after page of lurid sexual descriptions enshrined forever and even PUBLISHED for the pleasure of hypocritical conservative masturbaters.

R155, See r148. 😉
I love how the newspaper headline emphasizes the original Farce of "Whitewater," when everyone knows Starr's claim to fame is the Spin-off Show "Monica."
