As much as I would like for gasoline free vehicles to become a thing, electric vehicles aren't necessarily a savior to this. The rechargeable batteries eventually wear out, much like they do on your cell phones. The vehicles become worthless after a few years. Chevy has already stated they aren't offering replacement batteries for their Volt's. Their EV's are just going to become landfill after a few years.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 12, 2022 4:09 AM |
EV's are no good out on the open road.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 12, 2022 4:15 AM |
Wow, a lot of misinformation in this thread. Let's start with the reserves under Venezuela. 234 years of reserves means that at the rate that the oil wells give up their oil it will last 234 years. It's not like a swimming pool of oil where you could put in a bigger vacuum pump and suck it out faster, because a viscous liquid like that only responds to pressure and the recharge rate that comes from below. That oil would possibly supply the needs of the US for a week or two. Certainly it would not cover the oil needs of the entire planet for 234 years. So there's a major piece of MAGA ignorance right there.
Older generation EV cars lose value quickly because the charging distance is small to begin with and decreases over time. Most current generation EV cars have a charging distance of 200 miles or more, which means they will still hold onto their value for several years, unlike, say, a 2013 Nissan Leaf with a remaining charging distance of 45 miles. . It is a capitalist assholey thing to change designs with every new vehicle year, so that updated batteries cannot be put in older vehicles. That's not the fault of EV cars, it's the fault of the car makers. At a certain point, I expect that there will be some sort of secondary battery market for EV batteries, whether "official" or unofficial.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 12, 2022 4:27 AM |

That guy was locked out of his car because he didn't pay his bill. How is that any different than not paying your bill on a gas vehicle and they come and Repo the car? Same thing.

This is why i couldn’t be a politician. I probably would’ve tweeted something back like “sorry we all can’t be big, fat ugly slabs of useless redneck flesh like you.”
The problem with electric vehicles is that they’re hard for many people to charge. I live in NYC and my garage doesn’t have charging stations. I drive out east (100 miles) almost every weekend. What would happen if the power goes out? How would I make it to work on Monday morning?
Most people are happy with their cars. We need a product what is cheaper and easier if we expect people to give up on gasoline. Instead of car rebates (that republicans cry over), the government should offer tax incentives to companies for the number of electric cars sold (they’re probably already getting tax breaks). There also have to be ubiquitous charging stations and back up power in case the battery dies.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | September 15, 2022 12:23 PM |
That’s the biggest problem, charging. In NYC we don’t have extension cords that long.
Also, in addition to what r67 said about incentives to companies for how many they sell, they should also give incentives to companies whose fleets are a certain number of vehicles when they buy an EV to replace a vehicle. Thinking of like Con Ed, etc.

When the average price for a new (gas) vehicle is up to or beyond $50,000, which it is now, $80,000 doesn't sound so over the top. But I agree, EVs have to come closer to the price of gasoline vehicles to persuade Americans to buy them in quantity.

R79,
Having a (gasoline) car is easy for me in NYC. There is an indoor garage on my block and I really only use my car to drive out of the city. Most often, I drive out to the Hamptons which is almost exactly a 100 mile drive. Gas prices in the city are not higher than the surrounding suburbs. My post was about the problems I PERSONALLY would have with an electric car and things that could be changed for it would be possible for me to purchase one.
I think it is incredibly important not to rely on oil. We should have been independent of it 40 years ago. We need better options though.

Most people on this thread have never owned an electric vehicle. I have. Most kinds don't need a special charging station, they can be charged with an electric cord plugged into a normal 120 volt outlet with a convertor. However, that will be a slow charge (8 hours, or overnight). The 220 volt chargers stations would need an electrician to come out and wire up a special outlet in someone's garage, possibly with a dedicated port at the fusebox - but, that's also not a huge deal. It might cost $400 or so to do that kind of work. Those kinds of chargers can do a quicker charge and bring an EV to full charge in an hour or so.
