My Policeman at TIFF 2022 Reviews
My Policeman has already been shown at TIFF, but we haven't see any mainstream press reviews yet.
Here are some Twitter reactions-
[quote] VICE Staff- Harry Styles looks like he'll be gunning for an Oscar nom with his truly inventive performance in MY POLICEMAN. Styles takes the cliché-closeted-gay-role and rethinks it in a completely modern, post-metoo way. He’s near perfect in every scene!
[quote] Jeff Sneider- The embargo is up and I can now say that MY POLICEMAN left me absolutely DEVASTATED. I loved it. I needed some time after the screening because I was such a mess. One of the best movies of the year. David Dawson DEMANDS an Oscar nomination and Gina McKee was fabulous as well. ❤️
[quote] Scott Feinberg @ TIFF- MY POLICEMAN is a solid/affecting adaptation of a story about forbidden love. I went in skeptical about Harry Styles, but came away impressed. He not only has movie star looks, but burgeoning chops too, and his perf—which is actually quite daring—is the best thing about the film.

The formal reviews are coming in now.
From The Wrap:
[quote] For relative acting newcomer Styles, the guileless and appealing young Tom is an ideal role, his sweet and vacant beauty offering a blank slate onto which Marion and Patrick can project whatever they want.
[quote] It’s just the troubling muddle of the script and direction that leaves one wanting much, much more from “My Policeman.”

Movie which have two actors playing the same character NEVER EVER work.
It's only convincing if the two actors are blood-related. (for example Vanessa Redgrave and her daughter).

The reviews are terrible. This season will see two big prestige flops for him, effectively ending any bid he may have had to be a serious actor. No one will hire him.

It was a mistake to go from a bit part in Dunkirk (I can't say I even remember his role) to two big Oscar baity movies in a row. They should have slowly maneuvered him into acting slowly, in smaller parts, so he could gain experience without the burden of trying to carry a serious movie on his untalented shoulders.

R11, I disagree. I loved what Buñuel did with Obscure Object of Desire and alternating scenes with two actresses playing the lead female role. It really ratcheted up the madness and obsession that Fernando Rey had for someone he viewed as a possession and not as a person.
Is that what is going on here? Two actors sharing the same role?

[quote]Is that what is going on here? Two actors sharing the same role?
I haven't seen the movie but the reviews say Harry plays the character as a young man in the 1950s. They cast older actors to show the characters in the 1990s.

The Wrap reviewer complains that there is a performance gap between the younger and older versions of the characters that can't be squared with just living with homophobia and with age.
[quote] The marked difference between the two men over the course of 40 years signifies the ways in which the decades of enduring brutal homophobia have hardened Tom into someone brittle and abrasive, but there’s no connective tissue, performance-wise, between Styles and Roache. The rift feels so vast that at times it’s even hard to square that they are playing the same character.
[quote] The same goes for Patrick: Dawson’s Patrick is sleek and erudite, though caring, and in his later years, Everett’s version has evaporated any sense of politesse, even accounting for the fact that he is recovering from a stroke. Time and trauma have not been good to these men, but the writing doesn’t offer any solid characterization or sparks of recognition. There are no threads between the young men of this story and the older for the audience to grasp onto.

R41 Madness and obsession …Obscure Object of Desire
Madness and obsession is acceptable and expected from Luis Buñuel, Ingmar Bergman and those other sophisticated arty movies adored by Woody Allen-types.
But this new policeman movie is geared towards soppy teenagers, and it's impossible for an ordinary audience to get an emotional link from two different actors with different physiognomy.
(The same problem occurs in 'The Go-Between' and some of those Charles Dickens' movies)

Styles fans are trying to insist one of the reviewers is homophobic because they referred to Corin's character as "her". This is based on Corin using "they" - again, the reviewer weren't referring to Corin, but Corin's character. That's the level his stans are at to try and dismiss the negative reviews

She's typical of a certain type of British posho - privately educated at an all girls school, daughter of a white South African who didn't want to raise a family now the blicks are in charge, wants to reject the sense of privilege so identifies as Queer/Non Binary.
Series 4 of The Crown must be the poshest tv series ever made - Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, Helena BC, Emma Corrin, Josh O'Connor, Emerald Fennell all went to private schools. Erin Doherty must have felt very left out.

R57 doesn't see the irony of complaining about private schools and posh in relation to a show about the monarchy.
Also weird is his notion that people who went to state schools are incapable of finding themselves in the same room as people who went to private schools.

They often are, the British acting scene is notoriously difficult for those who don't have the right backgrounds to break into

Acting (and journalism) in the UK is still over represented by privately educated poshos.
Claire Foy and Matt Smith both went to the local state school. Vanessa Kirby and Victoria Hamilton went to private schools.
Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce and Lesley Manville went to the local school, Dominic West and Olivia Williams are both privately educated.

r62 I'm saying people from normal backgrounds have a tough time being allowed into the room in the first place.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 14, 2022 12:38 PM

I disagree, r64. Look at the casts of most UK TV shows and they are from "normal" backgrounds. For something like The Crown, which is about "posh" people, a more "posh" cast seemed to work, although there are still also many cast members from "normal" backgrounds, Claire Foy, for example. Private schools value drama lessons, staging plays, etc. more than state schools and so people who go to private schools have more opportunity to experience acting - but it's only the fault of state schools if they don't offer those opportunities. The idea that people from state schools are "kept out" of the room by people who went to private schools is nonsense, though.

[quote]but it's only the fault of state schools if they don't offer those opportunities.
What a fucking stupid thing to say. Yeah, it's not like the Tories have repeatedly slashed arts funding or anything, and it's surely not like the acting world works on connections and who you know. You clearly have no clue what you're talking about, so it's best that you stop pretending that you do. Typical Tory twat.

Having just finished the book (and not yet seen the film), I have a hard time imagining Styles as Tom. I also believe this would have been better as a limited series so that you could flesh out the story and characters better.
The novel toggles between the wife's POV and the lover's. Tom winds up being a bit of a cipher so any adaptation would need to build up his character for the piece to work dramatically.
Given many of reviews, I have low expectations of the film but will watch anyway.

I found the casting very confusing. The actor playing her older husband looked like the gay lover more than the policeman (only more attractive). So I kept wondering how did she divorce the policeman and wind up with the guy she knew was gay?
I thought Harry was very handsome, but he is not a natural acting talent.
