I inherited my grandmother’s awful stomach. Shitting before breakfast. Shitting after breakfast. I drink a coffee and then I shit. Go out to dinner while on vacation, and I’m fine when we leave the restaurant. Next thing you know, 30 minutes later we are walking around the city and BAM, diarrhea emergency! It’s sucks! But hey, at least I make a good bottom since I’m always cleaned out.
I’m sick and tired of having diarrhea all the time.

by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 11, 2022 5:36 PM |
IBS is a curse. It will take you years to learn how to control it, and by control I mean, learn how to avoid the worsts and deal with the merely bad. It is a curse, and I have but one piece of advice: never, ever use it as justification to do or not do something unless it is actually the reason for doing or not doing that activity. Blame it once out of convenience, get caught, and no one will ever believe you again when you say "I can't go to (fill in the event/place/function) because I feel so bad."

OP, see if your regular doctor or GI Dr can prescribe Welchol (generic Colesevalam) for you. It helped save my 94-year old Dad's life.
Two years ago we were terrified we'd lose Dad; he was taken over by cachexia; NOTHING stayed in his system long enough to extract nutrients or calories from literally anything we gave him in solid or liquid form. My God, that was such a dark time. Everything we gave him he shat out within 15-20 minutes, sometime less. We were cleaning liquid feces at least 3-5 times a day. He was listless and uninterested in anything.
I begged his wonderful PCP to help us find a remedy. Doctor W. told me about Welchol, an anti-cholesterol drug with a pronounced side effect: delayed gastric emptying. He also prescribed Periactin (ciproheptadine generic), an antihistamine with the side effect of ravenous appetite.
At day 3 or 4, his bowel movements were semi-solid; at Day 7 they were firmer, and he could hold his food down and his BMs in. By Day 14 Dad came back from the shadows.
Welchol is the fucking TRUTH.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 11, 2022 7:58 PM |
OP, I have had the same condition for 30 years and I second what R26 suggests. My doctor diagnosed it as IBS and it It took us years to figure out the right combination of psyllium fiber (I take a large dose of Metamucil before bed) and a low dose of lomotil (diphenoxylate/atropine) in the morning. With the right dose and timing, I can enjoy a normal diet, including coffee in the morning and alcohol in the evening. And I no longer need to worry about being more than 3 minutes away from the nearest bathroom.
While OCT meds can be effective, your condition will not remedy itself so speak with your physician.

I have a friend whose system is like that. She is super skinny because of it. She went to lots of doctors who told her she digested food too quickly and gave her some medicine that essentially would slow her down- the problem was her body couldn't absorb all of the nutrients she needed. It worked and she put on 5 pounds (I was guess she was 95 pounds and 5'4) and threw the medicine out immediately. But there was medicine and it did work so go to a doctor.

OP, a few easy things you can try that have really helped me:
For breakfast I eat Metamucil wafers (2 in a small packet) instead of breakfast. Bought at CVs and Shop Rite.
I also take 3 gummy bear Probiotics which can also be bought at CVS and supermarkets.
I trey not to have any dairy and am mostly successful.
And lately, I've been trying to not eat any gluten - not totally there yet on that, but getting there.
My stools have improved markedly. Much harder and also smoother coming out.

by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 12, 2022 1:36 AM |
OP, do you have true diarrhea (wet, watery stools) or do you have chronic loose stools? Diarrhea is potentially deadly since your body dehydrates significantly. If it's more of the occasional solid poop with frequent doodles, it's your gut. You might have IBS or some other gastrointestinal disorder, but it could also be due to profound imbalance in your stomach/intestines/colon.
I was a poop while the water boiled, poor after half cup of coffee, poop after finishing coffee morning routine person. Only the first was comparatively solid. The others were looser. It lasted so long that I even suspected my then-husband of dosing my coffee with stool softener or some other substance.
Eventually, after consulting my PCP, I added probiotic capsules to my morning along with some yogurt or kefir along with my coffee. It took a couple weeks to take effect, but I have eliminated loose stools completely (except an occasional food poisoning crap). Of course you should talk to your doctor and, possibly, a GI specialist. Presuming you do not have bloody stools not caused by hemorrhoids, there should be no blood in your poop. A urine test can rule out protein in your urine as well. This is a symptom of serious organ and digestive problems.
Good luck!

We don't get enough fiber in our diets. Most of us should have 30-40 grams of fiber per day. A pear has 3 grams of fiber. Fruits are a good source, but so are legumes and vegetables.
I take 5 CVS fiber pills (cheaper than Metamucil) with each meal. Each pill is 2 grams. If I eat a lot of fruits or vegetables I might cut that down to 10 pills a day. But this will solve your issue OP and will pretty much solve it over night. Try it.

r69, that's actually been debunked but I will say you have to take each pill one at a time. I already drink a ton of water but I asked my doctor and she said there is no evidence that drinking more water with the fiber pills does much else but make you pee. In general, we should be drinking about 64 ounces of water per day. That's about five tall glasses.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | September 12, 2022 5:10 AM |

My problem, which goes back to my 30s (I'm 70 now) is my lack of bowel control. When I have to go, I have to go! This is especially true in the last 5-10 years when in the morning I will usually go at least 4 times before I can go out for the day. Fortunately, I'm retired now.
And no, I've had very little anal sex over the years.

Had issues for 35 years. Regular GI visits, colonoscopies, CT scans - none really defined the issue. I’ve tried to manage it myself. The best thing I ever did for it? Retire. Getting proper sleep and not having to abide by a schedule that doesn’t work for my body - and the disappearance of stress - solved 90% of the problem. Not a doctor or any medical advice - retirement.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | September 14, 2022 6:49 PM |
Sounds like IBS-D, the oh so fun diarrhea type of IBS. I have had it for almost 30 years though it is better than it was at the start. Agree with others that you should see a GI specialist and get tested to rule out other causes, like infectious agents, ulcerative colitis, or cancers. Will involve stool samples and probably a colonoscopy. Starting on SSRI antidepressants reduces the worst of the symptoms years ago. What helps me the most is taking lots of fiber caplets — like up to 14-18 per day. I am not consistent enough with that routine but found it helped absorb the water in my colon and reduce the frequency and amount of diarrhea.

I have Crohn’s disease. I find slippery elm powder helps a lot. I prefer capsules to loose powder. I still occasionally get caught out. Being up early for a flight and associated stress is a prime cause for that so I make sure I avoid early flights as much as possible. I go four-five times a day mostly before 9am. That’s just the way my body is and I have to work around it.
