For New Yorkers — what’s the best festival, street fair, or celebration in NYC?
I’ve always thought I’d like to see the Feast of San Genarro but I’m open to suggestion.

^^Better correct the typo for starters. Gennaro.

San Gennaro is not as much fun as it used to be, now it's all about $$$$$,
So what else is new?!

What would you choose as the centerpiece for a trip to NYC, R2? I’ll probably have a week or so.

R3 Take Me Out on Broadway. Starts Oct 31st.

San Gennaro is disgusting, unless you’re really hankering for some fried Oreos…

The annual San Gennaro festival in Little Italy was held a few times a year as I recall. It's a tourist trap.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 11, 2022 3:00 PM |
I thought Little Italy is almost devoid of Italians now and had, excepting a few retail and food stores catering to tourists, been absorbed by the Chinese moving up from Chinatown.

I think they now just hire old Italian actresses to lean out of windows and occasionally yell "Yo Antony", R8.

They all suck.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 11, 2022 3:13 PM |
I'd just stay home. Chances are very good that you'll be a victim of the uncontrolled random violence.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 11, 2022 3:19 PM |
r3 Where in the city are you staying?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 11, 2022 3:21 PM |
My Dorothy was conceived at one.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 11, 2022 3:24 PM |
Hasn't been good for the 30 years that I can remember.

Gay pride is the best festival. You see real celebs just walking down the street. A list.
Everyone should go at least once.

There's one where Former New Yorker, with both fists up his asshole, runs naked down Seventh Avenue screaming "I NEED TO GET FUCKED RIGHT NOW!"
Oh, wait, that's his commute.

I want to start planing around a festival or event and then stay somewhere within walking distance of it, R12. I want to struggle with transit as little as possible.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 11, 2022 4:03 PM |
r17 Everything is in walking distance as long as you pick a hotel in Manhattan. Is this your first trip to NYC?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 11, 2022 4:10 PM |
Second trip, R17, but the first was decades ago. I had a friend in Boston and took the train from there. Stayed in a B&B and basically only walked through the Village. People were so friendly I was shocked. They weren’t even angling for anything. Just a few nice comments and off they’d go. Blew my mind.

R9, Anthony lived in Boston's North End, not New York's Little Italy.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 11, 2022 5:36 PM |
It’s basically a typical NYC street fair, one we see all around the city each weekend, but in Little Italy

I'm amazed the city is allowing a celebration centered around white culture. What is someone is triggered?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 11, 2022 6:41 PM |
San Gennaro is nothing special - just a ton of sausage & pepper stands in a street packed with people as bad as a rush hour subway car.
If you really want to do an Italian Festival, Our Lady of Mt Carmel in Williamsburg Brooklyn is much better.

r23 If OP wants to see a ton of sausage, I still stand by my Take Me Out recommendation.

If you think Italians are part of white culture you haven't hung around Italians much
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 12, 2022 1:06 PM |
R9, lmao. Funniest thing I've read all week.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 17, 2022 6:55 AM |
R22 In the real world it is white,in The DL world it is white adjacent. Which is worse than being black or brown.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 17, 2022 7:10 AM |
Did OP get that Italian sausage he was hoping for?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 21, 2022 10:37 PM |
San Gennaro was always marked by horrible smells and bad behaviors on the part of the bridge and tunnel eyetalian crowd.
I lived near there and sometimes couldn't escape. I got to witness this angry vendor throw hot oil at a menacing customer. Good times!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 21, 2022 10:42 PM |
It’s a lot of tourists and people from NJ and long island OP. I work nearby and always shudder as I walk by and see the crowds (MARY!!).
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 21, 2022 10:45 PM |
These New York street fairs suck, sausages and peppers and vendors selling cheap crap you don't want or need.
