His phrasing and delivery still gets me.
Do young people know Christopher Cross today?

Last I heard he had a really terrible case of Covid. I heard the reason he hasn't successful long term was because of his looks.

R1, I heard he’s all right, think he’s gonna make it

Yacht Rock is pretty big as a genre right now and there’s a lot of Christopher Cross on those playlists. Young people are probably more familiar with him now than in 2003.

Think of Laura, Laugh don’t cry - I know she’d want it that way.

His first album is really terrific. Some of the later singles are great - Arthur's Theme (obviously), Thnk of Laura, Swept Away.

There was some guy on the Steve Hoffman site that said that he went up to Chris with his wife and Chris wanted them to come up to his hotel room. Apparently Chris took an interest in the wife. The poster said that Chris was a bit creepy.

His clipped vocal delivery is unique.

I lived on the beach in Florida when "Sailing" came out. Good memories 🙂

He’s pretty active on social media and interacts with his fans and seems very appreciative . He wasn’t able to walk for a time because of covid.

What a wonderful memory R10! As someone said in the comments at the link, "Sailing" isn't just a song, it's a whole mood or vibe. I agree entirely. I love Cross' voice but I admit that the only two songs I ever listen to are "Sailing", and "Arthur's Theme", both of which I adore.
I really need to listen to more of his work. So, if anyone can recommend anything specific, I'll listen.

I saw him in concert five years ago. He's a terrific musician and plays several instruments.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 11, 2022 8:31 AM |
I'd wager $$$$ if he looked then the way he looks @OP's pic, he'd have had been more successful with the shallow public.

I want to say the youngest group of people likely to know him would be around 25-35 if their parents listened to him while growing up. They also mentioned him a couple of times on Glee, if my memory isn’t failing me.

There isn't a hope in hell Christopher Cross has any relevance to people under 40, not a chance. Unless he has a Kate Bush/Stranger Things moment, he is too obscure.

Gurl young people don’t even know who Kris Kross are. Whet them?

Listening to him gave me diabetes.

Cross' music was super saccharine, but 1980 was a bizarrely awesome mix of eclectic artists on FM radio.

That list of 100 top selling singles in 1980 is the epitome of democratic. Every genre/style popular at the time represented.

I can't listen to Sailing or Ride Like the Wind without tearing up.

I hope he's doing well because he truly fell quite ill with Covid.
He's one of the few who can sing The Beach Boys songbook. Remember, Brian Wilson had a lovely voice back in the day like a choirboy. Shame about their Republican stance but I don't know if Brian Wilson was ever truly political or not.
Anyway Christopher Cross can truly fucking well sing. His tenor range and phrasing are just letter perfect. He's like the male equivalent of the late Karen Carpenter. The thing with him was that his most popular work coincided with MTV to a fair degree and MTV thought he had a face for radio.
That range, though! Him and the late Harry Nilsson just naturally had the goods, man.
I play the drums so my guess might be off but I think Christopher Cross can go from around A to F sharp or so.

MTV played Culture Clue with fugly Boy George in the early 80s so why not him?
Elton John isn't any looker in whatever decade you stick him in.
Michael Jackson screwed up his looks in '87 & they still played him even after the pedo charges forced him to duet with Janet in '95.
The Phil Collins & the Simply Red guy weren't exactly Chippendales material either.

I love him!

He’s touring and recovered r27. I think Cross and a few other musicians have done a all star band tribute shows for the Beatles and The Beach Boys.
Brian Wilson and Al Jardine both came out strongly against the Trump/Beach Boys fundraiser in 2020. It’s the Mike Love/Bruce Johnston version of The Beach Boys that did the fundraiser. Al Jardines son Matt can sing the Brian Wilson parts very well. Al tours with Brian and the Wilson sisters frequently.
Christopher Cross came out right before MTV and right at the end of era where being a great musician mattered more than being telegenic/having an big image. I would say Cross” fan base was 25-45 not the demographic they were wanting. I think if Cross hit big 5 years before he could’ve stretched out his career longer.

That's a lovely song R44. I'd never heard that before. He shows great voice control in little delicate ornamentations.
