Anti-choice activist changes mind after getting pregnant with defective fetus in Texas

A year after they were married, Kailee miscarried at 16 weeks and was hospitalized for severe complications, including blood clots and infection. It was one of three miscarriages she had in the early years of marriage.

“It made me realize that pregnancy can be dangerous,” she said. “It made me think of my little sisters, and I wanted them to be able to have a choice if they ever had to go through something like that.”

Last September, when a restrictive anti-abortion law took effect in Texas, Kailee pleaded on Facebook for people to contact their elected representatives to protect abortion rights.

In November, Kailee and Cade were overjoyed to learn that she was pregnant. Full of hope, they posted ultrasound pictures and a gender reveal video of a cannon shooting out blue confetti. They named their baby boy Finley.

Then, about three months later, they learned that Finley had heart, lung, brain, kidney and genetic defects and would either be stillborn or die within minutes of birth. Carrying him to term put Kailee at high risk for severe pregnancy complications, including blood clots, preeclampsia and cancer.

Even so, they could not get an abortion in Texas and fled to New Mexico.

“I’ve never felt more betrayed by a place I was once so proud to be from,” Kailee said through tears.

“How could you be so cruel as to pass a law that you know will hurt women and that you know will cause babies to be born in pain?” she added. “How is that humane? How is that saving anybody?”

CNN emailed Texas lawmakers who authored or sponsored the state’s anti-abortion laws. None of them responded to CNN’s questions.

They only care when something happens to them personally.

Stupid fucking cunt bitch.

by Anonymousreply 1September 10, 2022 11:39 AM

I'm glad she had the financial means and support to be able to leave the state for her abortion.

There are women in Texas and other states who are not so lucky, and my heart goes out to them.

That being said, we need to be amplifying these horror stories between now and election day to make it crystal clear to voters how vital this election is to all of our rights.

I keep thinking of those fundy wives who have a dozen pregnancies. Tons of dangerous miscarriages there. Any pregnancy can be ectopic. At some point, someone the GOP deems "important" is going to die over their silly policies. Show up at an emergency room in a rural hospitals because they are having problems, and the answer they will hear is that there is no doctor available to save their lives because any doctor with the expertise to handle these sort of emergencies have fled to blue states.

A cautionary tale for Republican voters and so-called "Christians".

by Anonymousreply 2September 10, 2022 11:43 AM

"she had to flee her home state" She had to leave her house with dinner still on the table and run across the border with dogs chasing her? Why do journalists insert egregious drama words like "flee" instead of just report the story? (I know the answer to that already.)

She didn't "flee". She planned a trip to NM, made arrangements for the procedure and then traveled there.

by Anonymousreply 3September 10, 2022 11:44 AM

Leopards ate my face.

by Anonymousreply 4September 10, 2022 11:49 AM

Here's hoping more Rethug women see the light and vote accordingly.

by Anonymousreply 5September 10, 2022 11:50 AM

She didn't have the loot though, R2. Her hubs had to beg from their Trump supporter friend or maybe relative and yeah, well, this whole thing is a mess.

by Anonymousreply 6September 10, 2022 11:52 AM

Shame it took this to peak her, but glad she survived and then told her tale. It takes guts to walk back erroneously thinking publicly just to help others, and she has done. However wrongheaded her beliefs were.

by Anonymousreply 7September 10, 2022 11:52 AM

Her home state is full of shitheads.

by Anonymousreply 8September 10, 2022 11:54 AM

Anti-abortion rights retarded cow knocked up with tadpole says what now?

by Anonymousreply 9September 10, 2022 11:56 AM

There is nothing in the article that says she was an anti choice activist, just that she personally was strongly pro life. But she changed her thinking years ago after her first miscarriage and was arguably a pro choice activist (if you count Facebook posts as being an activist).

So many people being bitches just because she is white and fat.

by Anonymousreply 10September 10, 2022 12:07 PM

I don’t believe these stories.

by Anonymousreply 11September 10, 2022 12:26 PM

R11 only believes what comes out from Trump's asshole-shaped mouth.

by Anonymousreply 12September 10, 2022 12:28 PM

R10 any woman who is “strongly pro-life” IS anti-choice, whether she is what you deem an activist or not. Apparently posting things on Facebook counts as activism in your corner of the asylum, you gormless queef

by Anonymousreply 13September 10, 2022 12:29 PM

I don’t believe him either, R12.

by Anonymousreply 14September 10, 2022 12:34 PM

Don't you think that 3 previous miscarriages plus the fucked up Finley, is nature's way of saying, "bitch, it's just not going to work?"

But oh no, she MUST reproduce...

by Anonymousreply 15September 10, 2022 12:42 PM

Her doctor told her NOT to have another pregnancy in Texas, yet she knew better.

Critical thinking may be lacking here.

by Anonymousreply 16September 10, 2022 12:45 PM

R10 She, like the majority of white women, voted for Trump. She fucked her up her own game.

by Anonymousreply 17September 10, 2022 12:49 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

by Anonymousreply 18September 10, 2022 12:58 PM

R11 from this thread, you're a fucking moron.

by Anonymousreply 19September 10, 2022 1:06 PM

This beautifully summarizes every Republican I’ve ever met. Me, me, me, me! Zero empathy and zero ability to think about what their decisions could mean for other people’s lives unless it’s something that happened to or that benefits them.

by Anonymousreply 20September 10, 2022 1:19 PM

She voted for the politic as that made the ban law.

What did she think would happen?

by Anonymousreply 21September 10, 2022 1:25 PM

same with every celebrity that comes down with a severe illness or disease....Michael J Fox, Im talking to you.....

by Anonymousreply 22September 10, 2022 1:26 PM

Too bad, white kids; you know what you signed up for!

Wow, R2, the way you wrote that made me think it would've made a great [italic]Twilight Zone[/italic] episode. How chilling. And tragic.

by Anonymousreply 25September 10, 2022 1:38 PM

File this under people I don't care about.

Someone alert Mensa.

by Anonymousreply 27September 10, 2022 1:40 PM
“I’ve never felt more betrayed by a place I was once so proud to be from,” Kailee said through tears.

This is a true Leopards Eating My Face moment. No full-grown, fully functioning adult from Texas should be shocked to find out that their state has no respect for women and reproductive rights.

by Anonymousreply 28September 10, 2022 1:41 PM
It made me realize that pregnancy can be dangerous.
Her doctor told her NOT to have another pregnancy in Texas, yet she knew better.

My half sister was the same. Was told after her third kid to not have any more, had two more, they both nearly killed her, and the last pregnancy did such a number on her that she had to have a hysterectomy because sepsis had set in. Then she sued the doctor for violating her religious rights. It was thrown out of court, but that was in the 1990s. These days, it probably wouldn't be.

by Anonymousreply 30September 10, 2022 1:46 PM

I'm sickened by people who are not consistent in their beliefs when faced with difficult situations. If she was going to be pro-life for others, she should have been resolved that she would stand by her beliefs no matter what when it came to her own life. Her cross to bear was the problems with her child. Rather than live her faith, she in effect renounced it to save her own life. There's nothing noble about her behavior.

by Anonymousreply 31September 10, 2022 2:04 PM
I'm sickened by people who are not consistent in their beliefs when faced with difficult situations.

That’s what makes a Repug a Repug. Unless it affects them, it’s not important.

by Anonymousreply 32September 10, 2022 2:07 PM

Liberals are conservatives who've been assaulted by reality.

by Anonymousreply 33September 10, 2022 2:12 PM

I’m a liberal. Not a progressive.

by Anonymousreply 34September 10, 2022 2:13 PM

No one wants her to breed anyway.

by Anonymousreply 35September 10, 2022 2:25 PM

I wonder if I can get a small business loan to start my own back ally abortion business?

by Anonymousreply 36September 10, 2022 2:27 PM

I'm glad she is speaking out. I'm sure she is getting death threats from the morons in her state (which are many). She could have kept silent and pretended, like many women who have had abortions do.

I will save my scorn for those ladies and their partners --the ones who know through experience that the service is needed and even life saving, at times-- but seek to do what they can to keep it being available to others.

by Anonymousreply 37September 10, 2022 2:27 PM

LOCK her up. Make her carry it TO TERM. It's only fair to let her experience what she brought down on everybody else.

by Anonymousreply 38September 10, 2022 2:31 PM

She's a fuggo.

by Anonymousreply 39September 10, 2022 2:33 PM
They only care when something happens to them personally.

Sadly, this is the de facto American attitude (except for many left wingers).

by Anonymousreply 40September 10, 2022 2:40 PM

Anyone who claims to be Christian (which is most of this country) has a specified directive in their religion to care about others.

But most of them shit on that like they shit on the rest of Jesus’ teachings

by Anonymousreply 41September 10, 2022 2:43 PM

No no, Dear, no aborxit means no aborixit, dim white chick. Is she not subject to citizens militia arrest now. Killing a child is very serious in the state of Texass.

by Anonymousreply 42September 10, 2022 2:43 PM

"Full of hope, they posted ultrasound pictures and a gender reveal video of a cannon shooting out blue confetti. They named their baby boy Finley. "

That kid was doomed anyway.

by Anonymousreply 43September 10, 2022 2:45 PM

Unless they are being killed by an AR-15, R42. Then, have at it!

by Anonymousreply 44September 10, 2022 2:56 PM
“It made me realize that pregnancy can be dangerous,”

The stupidity of this bitch! Of course pregnancy is dangerous and always has been. It's technically a parasitic growth sucking nutrients from the host and causing dramatic changes.

Re: dangers of maternity in America, as per the CDC:

"In 2020, 861 women were identified as having died of maternal causes in the United States, compared with 754 in 2019 (3). The maternal mortality rate for 2020 was 23.8 deaths per 100,000 live births compared with a rate of 20.1 in 2019"

Our ranking, compared to the rest of the world: "When compared to the World Health Organization's maternal mortality rate rankings, the US ranks 55th, falling behind RUSSIA which has a maternal mortality rate of 17 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births."

by Anonymousreply 46September 10, 2022 3:31 PM

R46, statistics like that remind me that America is a first world country with some third world problems.

by Anonymousreply 47September 10, 2022 3:39 PM

Self-imposed third world problems at that

by Anonymousreply 48September 10, 2022 4:27 PM

I always think DLers are exaggerating about these names but "Kailee"? And she was going to name her kid "Finley"?

by Anonymousreply 49September 10, 2022 4:58 PM

Didn't Texas outlaw abortion tourism?

Go get 'em. Lt. Gov. Patrick!

by Anonymousreply 50September 10, 2022 6:22 PM

Fucking frozen tater tot chemicals. She should have read the warning label.

by Anonymousreply 51September 10, 2022 6:32 PM

R7, “pique”, not “peak”

Just an FYI. No shade. 😊

by Anonymousreply 52September 10, 2022 7:04 PM

This story keeps getting shared by people who don't follow the timeline. She became pro-choice in her early twenties, following her first miscarriage, according to the article. Years later, when the bans went into effect she lobbied her friends and family to register their protest:
Last September, when a restrictive anti-abortion law took effect in Texas, Kailee pleaded on Facebook for people to contact their elected representatives to protect abortion rights.

After the new Texas law went into effect, she had another miscarriage. I think it's fitting that her husband sought the abortion and travel money from a Trumpster relative:
The DeSpains didn't have enough money -- Kailee said she was docked pay at work because she'd had too many sick days -- so Cade asked a relative he describes as "the epitome of the Trump fanboy" to give them the $3,500. The relative relented when Cade said that without the abortion, he could end up a widower at age 30.

by Anonymousreply 53September 10, 2022 7:08 PM

Blue states should deny abortions to those who vote republican.

by Anonymousreply 54September 10, 2022 7:08 PM

Red state anti-choice people won't learn or have empathy for reproductive choice unless and until it directly impacts them.

Until a daughter, wife, or sister is forced to carry a pregnancy to term and suffers the consequences of lack of abortion availability, they won't care what happens.

While they say "life of the mother" in their exceptions, the reality is that that is a vague and nebulous area in which doctors will err on the side of caution, so will wait until the eleventh hour to ensure that there is no room for debating the necessity, thereby putting the mother's life in danger, not to mention the emotional and physical trauma.

While I wouldn't wish it on anyone, we should all accept that the underlying mindset of the far right wing actually precludes a wider sense of empathy for situations with which they have no direct or immediate experience. It is, in fact, WHY these people are so far right wing in their viewpoints.

by Anonymousreply 55September 10, 2022 7:17 PM

Lock up the whole shooting match of them, Holy Gov. Abbott. I await my $30,000 bounty check; do I get extra if I report the ATM machine?

by Anonymousreply 56September 10, 2022 7:44 PM

R23 here, with another observation:
At some point, someone the GOP deems "important" is going to die over their silly policies. Show up at an emergency room in a rural hospitals because they are having problems, and the answer they will hear is that there is no doctor available to save their lives because any doctor with the expertise to handle these sort of emergencies have fled to blue states.

Remember Hurricane Katrina and how it demolished the Mississippi Gulf Coast? And how the GOP after decades of doing fuck-all about coastal erosion or climate change, along with a so-incompetent-he's-dangerous POTUS W. Bush, Condi shoe shopping, and the utterly ridiculous "Heckuva job, Brownie" FEMA secretary?

Then Senator Trent Lott lost his ENORMOUS home in Mississippi (while thousands of people were dying and losing their homes/jobs/loved ones) and was crying about his second home being destroyed, and that we MUST do something...then crickets.

by Anonymousreply 57September 10, 2022 8:15 PM

This is actually a powerful story that could sway some of these pro-lifers (not most, granted). Both were raised in an ultra conservative household where they were taught to be pro-life. She had a miscarriage before this abortion and that is what actually made her change her mind about abortion. Then she needed an abortion for another pregnancy. TX doctor told her that unless they can prove that her life is in imminent danger., they cannot perform an abortion. Insurance won't cover it even though this is a mother's health related abortion. They have to borrow money from a Trumper relative who was only convinced to lend the money because he or she heard that the girl might die if she carries to term. This is the type of real life shit that changes people's minds.

by Anonymousreply 58September 10, 2022 8:19 PM

I need a bigger violin.

by Anonymousreply 59September 10, 2022 8:35 PM
"It made me realize that pregnancy can be dangerous," she said.

For the sake of the continuation of the human race, we should all be grateful that women do make that fateful choice to have sex without birth control, even though they know that it could lead to a lot of possible negative outcomes, including death. Hopefully, someday science will be able to determine ahead of time who should not get pregnant because of the risks and prevent it. Science needs to focus on prevention so that we can get away from debating about doing something after the fact with problem fetuses.

by Anonymousreply 60September 10, 2022 10:47 PM

She looks like the Dollar Tree version of Meghan McCain.

by Anonymousreply 61September 10, 2022 10:56 PM

She's a murderer! Lock her up!

by Anonymousreply 62September 10, 2022 11:00 PM

She’s going to hell.

by Anonymousreply 63September 10, 2022 11:12 PM
They have to borrow money from a Trumper relative who was only convinced to lend the money because he or she heard that the girl might die...

Wait. This couple is having another child, but can't put $3500 on a credit card? I mean, I understand not having the cash lying around, but they don't have the wherewithal to even charge it? Stop having children!

by Anonymousreply 64September 11, 2022 2:53 AM

The force is strong with them. smart not is this force and now they are Petitioning the gods.

by Anonymousreply 65September 14, 2022 3:37 AM

Fuck her feelings.

by Anonymousreply 66September 14, 2022 3:45 AM

I agree with R1.

by Anonymousreply 67September 14, 2022 5:02 AM

Same, R67.

I loathe people like her even more than those who stay ignorant, because all she has proven is she's an absolutely selfish asshole who wanted to just continue to control other people and tell them what they can do with their own bodies, but suddenly, it happens to her and she wants no one telling her what to do. Fuck her. Keep that defective thing in her. Make her carry it to term.

Even now, I doubt she's capable of empathy. It's about HER, even now.

by Anonymousreply 68September 14, 2022 5:09 AM
"I was raised in central Texas by extremely Republican parents and grandparents," Cade, 31, said. "One hundred percent pro-life."

No, you were 100% controlling others' lives.

by Anonymousreply 69September 14, 2022 5:18 AM

Who wants to bet she still votes straight Republican this November?

by Anonymousreply 70September 14, 2022 8:53 AM

R67/r68 The damage is done. Neither she nor anyone here can go back in time and erase one's mistakes. The best this woman can do, in her present situation, is tell her story to whoever will listen, and this she's already doing.
