At today’s ceremonies, the King looked sickly, annoyed, impatient. How will he endure the role?
King Charles…

An ugly, sickly-looking sovereign, an incompetent joke of a PM, and an economy that it's in the toilet and getting worse. If now's not the time for countries to ditch the crown's rule, I don't know when it'll be.
And since when does Camilla's face look like that? Jesus Christ, what a sight she is.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 10, 2022 10:01 AM |
I bet Charles only agreed to be King bc he wanted to give his son, who is equally disinterested in the monarchy, a few more years without the responsibility. Chuck looks unhappy and depressed. Like someone who was just handed a huge burden and he's not ready.

He can't be who he was for most of his adult life. He can't express his opinions about so many things, publicly. I think his head will explode. Or he will just do what he wants and destroy the monarchy.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 10, 2022 10:12 AM |
r4 The Ascension council. You didn't really miss much its mostly him pledging to protect the Church of Scotland and promising not to dissolve a few parliaments like his namesakes did. The proclamation being read out in public was slightly more interesting.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 10, 2022 10:12 AM |
The ink wells behaviour made me lose sympathy for him in an instant. Seemed to reveal an entitled, pampered person suffering from the delusion that his incredibly privileged life is truly a great effort in sacrifice and service. From the way he gestured, on camera, to his underling, I imagine him being a demanding nightmare to work for.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 10, 2022 10:14 AM |
His training has been learning to shut up. He's been told he as king cannot be vocal any more about matters important to him, like environmentalism, climate change, and garish new rich architecture in London.

When the grenadier guards took off their bearskin hats at the courtyard proclamation at St James's Palace, it revealed some stunners. There was also an absolutely drop dead gorgeous hussar out with the cannons in the Park. Thank God the British kept some hussars: a very sexy uniform.

R14 Alas, his parents and his grandmothers were all very long-lived, and he has access to the highest quality healthcare. If gout or stress doesn’t get him, he’ll probably limp on, getting more cantankerous and losing more touch for the next fifteen to twenty years or so.
Pity, because a healthy, likeable, pleasant-looking young-middle aged King in his prime (ie. a forty-something Wills) could have made for excellent optics at this crisis point in British history.

Charles often makes funny facial expressions. Note that his first expression (at the divine Johnny) was an awkward smile - only after that did he sort of scowl, as he turned to sign the papers (maybe mindful of the gravity of what he was doing?) I won't be judging him for this.

A new Ascension Council ritual is born: The Stabbing of the Inkwells. I think I might have had to stiffle a giggle if I were present.
What, no Kate present clutching at William's elbow siddling along with him as he greeted former PMs?
Wonder if they all went out for a boozy brunch afterwards.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 10, 2022 11:16 AM |
I'm more amused in how it shows his and the queens personality differences than it pretending it makes him a tyrant in the waiting. She'd have just scowled at them and then looked at the aid until they cottoned on. Charles went Jack the Ripper on the things.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 10, 2022 11:21 AM |
To think he had to wait 73 years to get to this moment. I wouldn't be surprised if his reign lasts less than a decade at its most. HM, The Queen's longevity was something of a once-in-a-lifetime anomaly. He has done most of her duties as she grew older and frail, so the biggest hassle is the changing of all the legalities.

R47 Absolutely agree. When I realized my mother was going to die, I laid in bed for hours screaming. It’s been eight years and it still hurts but not as much, thankfully. Those first few months felt like a nightmare I couldn’t shake. And I had the “luxury” of staying home and out of the public eye.

My mom suffered from depression so some of my grief was guilt and sadness over the unfair hand she had been dealt in life. She was a special light and I was able to tell her so at the end.
A few months later, I got lyrics from Bridge Over Troubled Water tattooed on my inner arm: “your time has come to shine, all your dreams are on their way”.

The Assension Council video was absolutely fascinating. All the former PMs front and center, including Saddiq Khan, Mayor of London. BoJo having a very involved chin wag with Gordie Brown. The ritual, the attention to detail, the CofE Archbishops as witnesses, the mention of G-d repeatedly, the separate proclamation for the maintenance and defence of the Church of Scotland and of course reconfirming several times that King Charles is Defender of the Faith. Britain may be "multicultural", but when it comes to official reality, Britain remains a stauchly Xtian country.
And afterwards, the public reading of the proclamation. No one, nowhere does pomp and circumstance better than the Brits.
I wasn't born when the late Queen was proclaimed and I may not be around when Wills is proclaimed king. Definitely worth a watch, if for no other reason than the few moments of viewing our delectible Johnno in the background.

Charles seems to have finally matured in his later years. He seemed to have a better relationship with his mother and is affectionate toward his sons and grandchildren. I think it is a case of an older straight man "getting in touch with his feelings" and "becoming more vulnerable."

Charles is a drinker.
For 70+ years, he has had no responsibility.
He could party it up and have sex with whoever he wanted, drink to his heart's content, and pursue his passions.
I'll bet his handlers won't even let him drink any more. And any drinker knows that something like that will make you VERY unhappy.
I'd be annoyed too, if my life changed so drastically in just one instant.
As someone above mentioned, older men don't deal well with a change in their routine.

If I read another comment where someone says that “Charles just lost his mother” which explains why he’s acting like an entitled shit, I will stab that poster with an ink pen.
Most people will lose their parents. Normal people have to plan the funeral, deal with estate issues, clear out their parent’s home, maybe deal with family members fighting over the will or funeral plans, some have to deal with hospital bills if their parent was sick before passing, and most people do not live to see their parents reach their 96th birthdays. On top of everything else, most people have to work while they try to figure out everything I mentioned above.
Charles on the other hand, has been prepared for this moment for 73 years, has people doing everything for him and all he has to do is participate and not act like an entitled fucking toddler for the entire world to see. And he couldn’t even do that.
Charles has shown in the past that he doesn’t care about duty or responsibilities. Otherwise he wouldn’t have strayed and made his marriage to Diana work for the sake of his family and because that would have been the dutiful thing to do as the next King of England. He would have also handled the situation with Meghan and Harry instead of creating an embarrassing spectacle for the entire world to see.
Charles is a petulant and spoiled 73 year old man baby who doesn’t give a damn about anything but himself. And William isn’t much better based on little snide comments you hear from royal commentators. That‘s your new King, folks! Enjoy!

Here it is:
On Thursday, the world lost an extraordinary leader, whose commitment to the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth was absolute. So much will be said in the days ahead about the meaning of her historic reign.
I, however, have lost a grandmother. And while I will grieve her loss, I also feel incredibly grateful. I have had the benefit of The Queen's wisdom and reassurance into my fifth decade. My wife has had twenty years of her guidance and support. My three children have got to spend holidays with her and create memories that will last their whole lives.
She was by my side at my happiest moments. And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life. I knew this day would come, but it will be some time before the reality of life without Grannie will truly feel real.
He continued: "I thank her for the kindness she showed my family and me. And I thank her on behalf of my generation for providing an example of service and dignity in public life that was from a different age, but always relevant to us all.
My grandmother famously said that grief was the price we pay for love. All of the sadness we will feel in the coming weeks will be testament to the love we felt for our extraordinary Queen. I will honour her memory by supporting my father, The King, in every way I can.

He didn't want to marry Di and breed heirs (she said he dutifully fucked her every couple of weeks). He wanted to gossip with Camilla in the garden and giggle about hot stable boys.
I think Liz wanted to retire a decade ago but Charles said no.

Even though was was the Sweet Granny in later years, she did give a dirty look in her day. Hopefully Chuck will make a joke of it & calm down a bit.
Also, why was Bojo acting so weird at the ceremony; he kept staring at Theresa May, who liked quite annoyed herself. I have expected him to say in a loud voice, looking in May's direction "who farted?"

Melania Trump has issued a statement:
Since last Thursday's dreadful news we have seen, throughout the world, an overwhelming expression of sadness at Queen Elizabeth's death.
We have all been trying in our different ways to cope. It is not easy to express a sense of loss, since the initial shock is often succeeded by a mixture of other feelings: disbelief, incomprehension, anger - and concern for those who remain. We have all felt those emotions in these last few days. So what I say to you now, as your First Lady and a mother, I say from my heart.
First, I want to pay tribute to The Queen myself. She was an exceptional and gifted human being. In good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness. I admired and respected her - for her energy and commitment to others, and especially for her devotion to her children. Please respect their privacy as they come to terms with the devastating loss that they and the rest of us have suffered.
No one who knew The Queen will ever forget her. Millions of others who never met her, but felt they knew her, will remember her. I for one believe there are lessons to be drawn from her life and from the extraordinary and moving reaction to her death. I share in your determination to cherish her memory.
Thanks to all of you who have brought flowers, sent messages and paid your respects in so many ways to a remarkable person. These acts of kindness have been a huge source of help and comfort to her family.
Our thoughts are also with The Queen's family as they seek to heal their sorrow and then to face the future without a loved one.
I hope that tomorrow we can all, wherever we are, join in expressing our grief at Queen Elizabeth's passing and gratitude for her very long life. The world is united in grief and respect.
May she rest in peace and may we, each and every one of us, thank God for someone who made many, many people happy.

People have been writing Charles off for at least 40 years, saying he would never be king, that he should renounce his place in the succession, or that he should reign only if he never remarried, or that he should only enter into a morganatic marriage.
And he ends the day as the acknowledged king of the United Kingdom and other realms and territories, with his wife by his side and the most controversial issue is whether she should be entitled Queen Consort or simply The Queen.
He’s doing something right!

It's not about a grimace or an inkwell. It's about a deeply flawed chap. The Brit media who have been covering Charles for his entire life know it and are licking their chops. Despite her ne'er-do-well off spring the Queen had an almost Edwardian probity. This made her almost sacrosanct on a personal level. Never complain never explain. Charles can't get away with that, He's on tape wishing to be a "tampon". one mouse click away for his subjects listening pleasure.. Yet it's in his pontificating nature to try to explain digging himself in a deeper hole, He's done it before. Charles ego flaw is he desperately wants to be loved by his people. Loved liked Diana and his Mum. He never will be. I think Camilla knows her bloke and foresees the shit storm on the way. Watching her today she looked like she was sighing her death warrant. Winter is coming for the House of Windsor.

As a fountain pen enthusiast I’m a bit bemused why they didn’t give Charles a freshly inked pen. That would have made the cumbersome inkwells superfluous. The selling point of fountain pens is that they have their own ink supply inside the pen: you don’t need to dip fountain pens in ink, not unless you have a bottle-fill fountain pen that is empty or is a ‘hard starter’. Fountain pens basically come in two varieties— pens that can be filled from a bottle, usually using some sort of piston mechanism, and pens that have an interior ink cartridge.
I also note that William is a lefty who writes in the same hooked hand position as Obama. The hooked-style left-handers can find fountain pens awkward.

This is interesting, Bette stayed on the throne in order to allow Charles to enjoy his life without having to shoulder the burden of the crown. In doing so she has put him in the position to now shoulder that burden when he has the least amount of energy to do so.
Better to fuck his shit up when he was young instead of leaving the weight to fall on an old man.

It must be such a weird time for him. One day he’s mourning his mom and all the events that go with it, like that meet and greet. The next all these ceremonies ushering her out and him in as King. When my mom passed away, albeit we were both much younger and sudden, I had a hard time getting rid of her stuff and changing names on things. Even now a few years later, I have some things needlessly.

R217, I was saying the same thing before she died. Logically, she should’ve retired years ago so he could serve as King younger and build more good will. R220, most people would have moved the inkwell and tray of pens aside on their own rather than motion petulantly for an underling to move the offending objects. It’s a minor thing but very revealing all the same, which is why it’s sparked commentary here and elsewhere.

* Charles *never* writes with quill pens... or really, ANY pens besides ballpoint pens with pressurized ink cartridges that always work perfectly, at any angle.
* It really looks like the video clip was edited to loop the "annoyance" gesture, and in reality, he just gave a single "please move this away, I'm under lots of stress and just want to get this over with ASAP without embarrassing myself" gesture.

In the video at R38, all I can think about while that cunt Camilla is signing is that scene in Braveheart where Sophie Marceau says to the dying king “your son will not sit long on this throne, I swear it”
Charles will not sit long on that throne and neither will she.

Will Camilla be thrown from the palace into the streets without even her possessions when Charlie croaks and the next king/queen/whoever comes along? Whoever it is will be a descendent of the cheated-on Diana.
She’d better have been stashing cash away all these years.

Charles will likely have already set up a trust fund for her in the event he predeceases her. Also, parliament provides an allowance for a Queen Dowager as it did for Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother). In the Queen Mother's case, she always overspent which resulted in Elizabeth II and Charles having to supplement her income from the Duchy of Lancaster and Duchy of Cornwall respectively.

Losing one's mother, no matter your age, is especially hard for gay sons (at least ones who loved their mothers). When we were told there was nothing more they could do for my mother I cried every day for the 3 months she lasted. If I hadn't had the support from my staff at work and my friends outside of work I don't know if I would have made it. Definitely the worst 3 months of my life.
But, after my mother died I said to myself "the rest of your life should be relatively easy because you've been through the absolute worst thing you could ever imagine". And 30+ years later that has proven true.

When my mother died, I and my family still had functions we had to perform. I remember in the hospital, there were papers to review and sign and so many things that went into planning a funeral and post death details to handle. Anyone who as an adult has gone through the death of a parent, partner, whatever knows that life must be taken care of. It can actually serve to keep your mind in the present and help you cope during a very difficult time.

[quote] What's the point of being King if you have to move your own pens?
This is how Charles is going to fuck up the job. For the past 70 years, the Family has successfully rebranded monarchy as “devoted public service” instead of “living in the lap of luxury, waited on hand and foot.” That was easy because the Queen appeared selfless and unspoiled. Charles is a pampered douchebag, as anyone who spent any time around him will say. It will become clear very quickly what King means to him, and it isn’t what it meant to his mother. It’s “get these fucking ink wells off my table, peon!”

R266 Spot on. If the whole bases of your "soft power" lies in symbolic public displays then small quirks, gestures, expressions are everything. Elizabeth was the master of the non reactive gesture. The pen Camilla used was an inexpensive disposable fountain pen from Pilot called the Pilot VPen (sold as the Pilot Varsity in the USA). There were a number of Pilot VPens inside that pen tray which Charles dismissed with a wave of his hand. These pens are not refillable which means that any documents signed with the Pilot pens were not signed in archival quality ink.
Pilot Varsity pens are great little starter pens, but I confess I am a little surprised to see them being used at such a formal and indeed historic occasion. In the UK important documents are usually signed in an ink called Registrars' Ink, an archival quality ink. It may be that the Pilot pens were chosen because they are essentially foolproof, and not everyone is familiar with fountain pens nowadays (although of course people of Charles and Camilla's generation would have grown up using them).

Has he decided yet where he's going to live in London? He doesn't like Buckingham Palace and it is going to be undergoing reconstruction so he won't want to live on a building site. He's expressed a wish to remain in Clarence House which is odd considering while his grandmother was alive, he claimed he'd never want to move there after her death because it's too expensive to run and the rooms were too small.
If Charles and Camilla do move to BP, that would leave Clarence House empty. William and Kate already have that newly refurbished apartment in Kensington Palace where they won't be living much anyway since they've set up housekeeping in Adelaide Cottage at Windsor, so it's doubtful they'd take over Clarence House.
Apparently, Charles wants to hold on to Highgrove as his country home even though it now belongs to William through the Duchy of Cornwall and is prepared to rent it from the Duchy. Charles has never liked Sandringham House either, so he won't use it much.

I wouldn't call her a nutjob, but her marriage to Charles never had a hope. Her happiest days as his wife were always going to be the wedding, and the signing of the divorce papers. Charles married her for all the wrong reasons, she didn't understand that he was being pushed to enter a loveless marriage of convenience, and it's a pity that he didn't keep looking until he found a woman that was up for a loveless marriage of convenience. He should have been looking at women who were bearding for gay aristocrats, not starry-eyed teenagers with romantic illusions!
Camilla seems to be able to accept him as he really is, which is a rare enough gift that he's wise to hold onto her, no matter what the Haters think.

Why haven't we seen Princess Pushy aka Princess Michael of Kunt? She always claimed to be very close to Queen Elizabeth, although the late Queen is said to have disliked her. Princess Michael got along much better with Charles. You'd think she would have made sure she was seen at his proclamation with her husband and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
Maybe Charles banished her to the "colonies"?

[Quote]knowing how longevity runs in his family, I give him 15-20 years max on the throne. Prince George most likely won't be King until he's in his sixties if Charles and William both live and reign as long as Elizabeth did.
If Charles really lives another 20 years, William will also be in his sixties. So we currently have a 73yo King and the next two Kings will also be senior citizens when they become king. I really hate this. Would have been nice to get someone younger. William is 40 now and in his prime. WTH isn't he the new King?

Once he starts facing real problems, he may really start to fade.

The monarchy is hereditary. That is the fucking point of it. Wouldn’t matter if Charles dropped dead next week & William the week after that. There is ALWAYS a monarch and it moves down the line in a strictly regulated line.
Would you like to go and tell King Letsie of Lesotho that he’s only on the throne because he’s black? No, because that kind of racism isn’t fashionable anymore so you’ve directed it at white people instead. Bigotry is bigotry and you Americans have turned it into an art form.

I think Charles is going to do the dirty work (trim the deadwood). He has already said he is going to do this. He will do this so that hopefully William and George will have a problem free reign. I think there is another reason for this also. Many in the UK are living paycheck to paycheck and having tons of royals living off their dime is not a good optic.

Quick question—who is actually living off of the sovereign grant/government? Is it basically the older royals? I’m just wondering where Charles will slim down the monarchy… I think Harry and Meghan aren’t supported by it (although pops probably pays their bills out of his own pocket), but where else? A lot of these older royals are in their 80s—is he really going to toss them out? The look won’t be too good (although they are probably wealthy on their own). After the oldsters, there aren’t that many left.

[quote] It's embarrassing that there is still any monarchy in the modern age.
Why is it embarrassing? It's just a symbol of the nation in the form of a person with traditions. Most nations and even smaller entities have symbols and traditions. Even down to tribes and families.
The US has tons of symbols and traditions that serve to unify a people - or serve the purpose of unifying. Damn even sports teams have this.
Obviously for a nation that has been doing this a long time and whose present government grew out of a real monarchy there are legalities and more traditions involved.
People mostly love this. They enjoy it and they like how it makes them feel about their country, their tribe, their sports team.
Stop trying to trample down human nature. What are you some Marxist who prefers the tradition of squelching individuality, personal rights, and indulging in the tradition of imprisoning and murdering dissenters?
I am actually enjoying the Queen and UK attackers being schooled by real history and reality rather than their revisionist history. Especially the faux-academics showing their ignornace.

That strain of borderline hysterical "patriotism" terrifies quite rightly the rest of the world. USA!USA!USA! The only acceptable form of overt patriotism is at football matches. Soccer for you.

The fact is, after a few generations, the odds of your great-great-grandchild being in line for the throne (if you belong to an aggressively upwardly-mobile family) is almost equal to the odds of Prince William's son's great-great-grandchild. The BRF is known for marrying royals off to semi-commoners, in no small part to improve its own bloodlines with new DNA.
In theory, Meghan's kids are in line for the throne. A war & some nasty terrorist attacks could put one of them at their own coronation ceremony someday. Today's BRF carries so little of King George III's DNA, I doubt whether even Prince William's percentage could be precisely represented as a 16-bit floating point number (10-bit mantissa, 5-bit exponent, 1 sign bit).
It's kind of like how the House of Lords used to be, pre-Blair. Lords were generally white & wealthy, but it was about as close to a body of randomly-selected non-politicians as any western democracy has ever HAD. When the Internet was new, Commons had Lords advising them, because a few Lords actually WORKED for (or started & ran) "dotcom" companies because they had lives that existed outside of politics, while PMs in Commons were all professional politicians who were clueless about "teh Int3rweb5"

The only people - the ONLY people - who can’t see the point of monarchy in the “modern age” don’t understand it. Simple as that. There are a fair few republicans, even in the UK, but they argue from a position of understanding it but preferring a different system.
Every single nation has a Head of State, for a good reason. In America, the Head of State is also the political leader. To stop any chance of an tyrannical dictatorship taking over the USA has established a system designed (as far as possible) to prevent that…not least of which involves only two possible terms for one individual. Fine…it works well but is not perfect, as no system of government has yet to be.
In the UK we have separated the roles of political leader and Head of State. The HoS represents the people who elect the government of the day. The two institutions legally able to inflict violence upon us (under certain circumstances) - the police and the armed forces - do nor swear allegiance to the elected government, but to the Crown (aka the monarch aka the HoS aka the people). This preserves democracy in the most fundamental way by standing between a potentially tyrannical government and the people.
Having an an unchanging HoS when governments change provides an unmatched opportunity for continuing national identity. The country can come together to celebrate or mourn as one nations, undivided by political differences because it’s not the government that anyone’s looking to then.
We can also watch our history in action. The rituals, the pomp and the ceremonies have been handed down for centuries. The new King signed the proclamations in a hall that Elizabeth I signed hers in. How sad to have so little appreciation of history that you don’t think that matters.
Monarchy works. The most politically stable countries in the world are constitutional monarchies. The French desperately regretted disposing of theirs and tried, unsuccessfully, to re establish it. There’s a not insignificant Monarchist movement there today.
So, really, try reading up on these subjects before you live down to the world’s expectation of ignorant, arrogant Americans, eh?
R388 The British have a truly rare ability to laugh at themselves…basically unheard of in the US. That’s all that Monty Python sketch shows. It’s not a documentary 🙄

Now that he's King, do you think he's going to start making some of his family call him Your Majesty and Sir in private?
The wives of the Dukes of Gloucester and of Kent were required to call Elizabeth II Ma'am. So, did Princess Michael of Kent. When they were alive, Sir Angus Ogilvy (husband of Princess Alexandra) and Lord Snowdon (husband of Princess Margaret) also had to call her Ma'am even in private. The spouses of her grandchildren had to call her Ma'am.
Margaret Rhodes who was a first cousin to the Queen and Princess Margaret said in an interview that when King George VI was still Duke of York, she addressed him as Uncle Bertie. When he became king, she had to call him Sir at all times and her aunt as Ma'am. When the Queen Mother was widowed, she was allowed to call her Aunt Elizabeth again in private, but when she became one of her aunt's ladies in waiting in the 90s, she had start calling her Ma'am again.

I agree it's the little things in life which cause us rage: big things we expect, but when tiny functions hold us up it's incensing. And of course pricelessly comical. It's just C3's bad luck it was caught on camera for the ages. The truth will out!

I would imagine Charles and Camilla are more like brother and sister than husband and wife after all these years. I never paid them much attention, but it’s been kind interesting seeing their dynamic. She is very motherly and he’s domineering. Whether she was in the picture or not, I doubt he and Diana would’ve lasted. I still believe Diana was deceived, she may have entered the marriage wanting to be Queen, but she probably didn’t bargain on the completely loveless marriage. In retrospect, the divorce would’ve been a good thing in the long term. I’m sure she never expected him to be crowned at 73. She was still young when they divorced, she could’ve made a great life for herself had she lived. She wouldn’t had to deal with crotchety Charles. I always thought Camilla was a strong, tough woman, but marrying Charles to play mother hen has changed that feeling. I actually think Diana was the stronger and tougher of the two.

So she ran to astrologers, fortune tellers, psychics, etc. Lot of good that did her. Meghan appears to be a borderline as well. So Harry married his Mummy and like his Mummy, he has now fallen prey to quacks.

It is bullshit that you can't diagnose someone over the media. If you observe someone long enough you can because these people always exhibit the same traits. They refused to say what was wrong with trump and they knew he was narcissistic/psychopathic. It would have helped to have been educated about that kind of mental illness. We will be paying for trump for a very long time.

Most of the royals look as haggard as hell, Charles most of all. Many people his age look vital, but he looks elderly and collapsed.
The major royal ladies all look haggard, they're grieving and/or under stress because their whole world changed with a few hours warning, and while I agree that Kate needs to eat a couple of sandwiches I think she's going to get even thinner in the near future. Some people react to stress by eating less, and here she is with a new job, hew home, new politics, and the same old damn family feuds to deal with.

I doubt the public would stand for Harry and Meg being given a mansion at the public's expense, there's no way they can pay for the upkeep on a place like that on their own dime, and Charles won't want to admit that he's supporting his useless and hostile son in luxury. So I really don't see how they can get the place, unless those two drop their pretense of independence and try to become working royals again.

Why do people think they're unhappy in California and want to move back? They now live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Sunny weather, beautiful beaches and a friendly community. They have a lot of independence and Harry inherited a lot of money from Diana. Why would anyone changed this life to move back to a shitty country like the UK and live behind the walls of the Palace? Intrusive British press following you everywhere, your kids will be constantly harassed and followed and you exchange your independence and freedom for a golden cage.
I still think they've made the right decision. Who really wants do deal with a dysfunctional family like the BRF and the British press on a daily basis?

FFS, R83. Clue yourself in before you spew such ignorance again.
What “decision” do you think they made? The NEVER wanted to leave Britain or the BRF. They could not have been clearer in that presumptuous manifesto published on their website. They wanted to spend half their time in Britain being royal and half their time in America making money from that royal status. They were told “no” because this would violate the LAW and went against everything the monarchy stands for.
This ehole “they escaped the evil royals for a life of freedom” is a fantasy invented as damage limitation after they were told to fuck off and was believed by idiotic Americans.
It’s also AGAINST THE LAW for photographers to follow celebrities in the UK. Does America have such laws?
And the UK isn’t shitty, you bigoted xenophobe. At least we can send our kids to school without being frightened of them being shot in the head. At least we don’t make people sell their homes to pay for cancer treatment etc. etc.
by Anonymous | reply 486 | September 15, 2022 2:13 PM |
R483 I don't think for a minute Meghan is unhappy in California. I don't think she ever wanted to live in England, which is fair enough, she's not from here and probably felt homesick.
But I can't see why Harry would want to live there permanently. He's not from there and has family and friends here. I don't just mean Charles and William (we know there's no love lost there) but he has lots of other family. He could have spent more time with his grandmother, who was clearly ill and towards the end of her life, but it's not like he could just pop over for a quick visit.
Their children would not be harrassed in the UK, as the media must follow certain rules. Notice William and Kate's children are never photographed when it hasn't been pre-arranged with the press. For example, their first day at their new school recently. You can look and look, but you won't find candid shots of them at any other time. The same would apply to Archie and Lilibet if they lived here.
But if they hate it here so much and hate the Royal Family so much, then they should renounce their titles (after all, why be a Duke and Duchess if you hate the BRF?) and truly live an independent life.
by Anonymous | reply 487 | September 15, 2022 2:14 PM |
[Quote]They were told “no” because this would violate the LAW and went against everything the monarchy stands for.
It's also the 21th century and people want to live different lives. If Harry didn't want to spend all his time in the UK attending cocktail parties and cutting ribbons, why is this so bad? Why not make accommodations and let him live 6 months in the US and 6 months in the UK? Some of the Scandinavian royals made accommodations for their younger royals. Times are changing and the monarchy has to change also. If this is against the law, then change the law. I don't get why it had to be all or nothing. They could have just cut his salary or allowance. I doubt many people would have cared whether he was a full time or part time royal if they had kept this quiet.

by Anonymous | reply 492 | September 15, 2022 2:38 PM |
Because they want to believe that, R483. Someone actually posted that once the kids get older, they’ll want to live in the UK. As if rich California raised kids will want that. They’ll be driving their Ferraris, hitting the beach and surfing all day; probably partying all night. H&M handled their exit badly, but I don’t think the thought behind it was wrong. However, you can’t be a part time Royal and expect the perk$. Rules are rules and they know this which is why they wanted to leave in the first place. They should’ve just shut their mouths when they moved, plain and simple. This way they still have strong ties to the family, can travel back and forth and everyone is happy. That’s where massive egos got in the way.
To me other than the money and maybe status, there is nothing enticing about being in the Royal family. No privacy, dealing with the public, mostly boring duties, stodgy traditions. I think all the women who turned down William and Harry had the right idea. They also came from money, so they got everything without the chains that comes with being in the Royal family. I’d rather marry Richard Branson’s son than William. The thing with Meghan is that she seems to love the attention and didn’t have those kind of options, which is why it’s kind of puzzling she wanted to leave. Plus, she married the former spare, much better position long term. Perks without all responsibilities to come. As for Harry, nobody really knows what he’s thinking. He could be homesick or he might love the hell out of living in California. Overall, I think their kids will have a more fun, carefree childhood than if they stayed in the UK.
by Anonymous | reply 493 | September 15, 2022 2:45 PM |
Where to start, R488? Where to start with such stunning ignorance?
Firstly, the UK is a constitutional monarchy. This is a system of government. The rules for how the monarch, who is there to serve the people not enrich themselves, is laid out in laws that go back 400 years to the reformation. They are unelected so may not use their position to make money or campaign politically. To engage in either of those behaviours would cause a constitutional crisis and, almost certainly, end the monarchy because of a massive violation of the bond of trust between monarch, elected government and the people.
And if you think all they do is attend cocktail parties and shake hands then you are a moron. The monarch is the living embodiment of the British constitution. As head of state s/he represents the nation on the world stage, heads up hundreds of charities and organisations, awards hard work, valour and achievement with royal recognition on behalf of the nation, prosecutes all crime, heads up the armed forces…who pledge their allegiance to him/her, and so on.
But hell, you think that some bit part actress and her airheaded husband should have all the laws changed for them because the £2m given, free and gratis along with a house, paid for wardrobe (£1m in the first year), staff and 24/7 security wasn’t enough for them? How ridiculous.
Harry and his wife are absolutely within their rights to want a different kind of life. Sure. It’s the only one either of them will ever get and they are entitled to want to live it their way. Nothing wrong with that.
But they need to fuck off and do that then without deliberately trying to hurt an institution that means a lot to the UK, without the lies and snarks and sharing of private family information. They need to have the humility and sense to understand that the ONLY reason either of these clueless, brainless, talentless plonkers can make money from Netlfix and Spotify is because of their association with the BRF. No one would give a shit about them otherwise. If Markle was so fucking amazing how come she couldn’t even get her boring arse on the The Wendy Show before she met Harry?
As I read somewhere else (in relation to her) the other day - “What a difference a Prince makes”. Indeed.
Hope that’s clearer for,you.
by Anonymous | reply 494 | September 15, 2022 2:50 PM |
^Did not really read all of this, but Harry is not the monarch. He's the spare and instead of making some modest accommodations and adjusting to modern times, they lost him and his family.
by Anonymous | reply 495 | September 15, 2022 2:56 PM |
Then you”re an idiot, R495.
The royal family - inlcluding Harry - REPRESENT THE MONARCH, because s/he can’t be everywhere at once. The bows and curtseys Markle got were for the monarch, not her.
We are glad we lost Harry…his biggest crime wasinflicting that malevolent cunt on us, and we’re glad we saw beyond the PR to who he really is.

I think that Meghan and Harry could certainly have been able to live in California part time, after all, some European royals do live elsewhere—if they didn’t force the hand of the BRF. Negotiations were ongoing but they decided to leak that they wanted different roles to the press. And that’s where the problems started. They should have just kept everything private until all the details were worked out. After they did that, everything exploded.

R495, you realize that a growing number of people want to abolish the monarchy. Now they’ll be under even more scrutiny. While I think sketchy behavior goes on behind the scenes, no doubt Charles laid out money for that CA house, they can’t be funding H&M while they live in another country making their own millions. They would expect security to be provided in CA that the UK taxpayers would be paying for no doubt. How is that tenable? 6 months in and 6 months living in a completely different country, who wouldn’t want that? So when George is King he can do 6 months in the UK and and 6 months in some other country? Ridiculous. I read Sophie and Edward wanted to be pt years ago and were told no. Rules are rules. You bend for one, you bend for all. They should’ve stayed or just accepted that’s the way it is. They want to have their cake and eat it too.

by Anonymous | reply 524 | September 15, 2022 5:47 PM |
Asking for part-time status is in effect leaving the royal family, r524, and they were in Canada when they did that and have remained domiciled outside of the UK ever since.
Was it ever revealed which Russian billionaire's luxury complex they were staying at?

They demanded part-time status and then quit in a fit of pique by globally posting their manifesto with no warning when they did not get the answer they wanted. Presumably, they thought they could force the BRF's hand. Wrong. You cannot deign to express respect for the sovereignty of the Crown and then disrespect it when you do not get your way.

Edward and Sophie originally wanted to work & make money outside of the royal family. Edward's ideas didn't have much potential. I think he wanted to be an actor. Sophie was into something like public relations. They didn't make as much money as they had hoped and then settled into what they're doing now.

It wasn't so much about the money, but rather that Sophie made very indiscreet remarks about the royal family to a fake sheik who was actually a reporter.
by Anonymous | reply 535 | September 15, 2022 6:47 PM |
Yeah, Sophie got totally screwed over by Murdoch's gutter press. And Meghan whines? Sophie ran her own public relations office before she met Edward. She's probably the most intelligent royal. She and Edward had to give up on their hopes to work outside the royal family which is why Meghan and Harry were refused by the Queen. It doesn't work.
by Anonymous | reply 536 | September 15, 2022 6:58 PM |
R535, yes, the documentary I saw about E&S said that Sophie made some "out of school" statements about the royal family. IIRC, it wasn't even that bad (totally predictable), but the point was that you're not supposed to talk about what goes on behind closed doors.
by Anonymous | reply 537 | September 15, 2022 7:06 PM |
Sophie is a good English and Welsh white gell. She is the right kind. Good breeding, good schools. Spent time on the continent and in Australia. Good skier. Not some American mongrel with a nose job who wants to rile up the darkies, eh? Pretend she’s one of them so she can be what they call “awake,” wot? Sophie can stalk and shoot a 14 rack in woolens and wellies in a light rain. Doesn’t mind not wearing makeup, doesn’t have to get done up like a tart. God I miss Diana

by Anonymous | reply 539 | September 15, 2022 7:18 PM |
Notice it wasn’t until the queen was dead that Murdoch media started gushing that Sophie was Elizabeth’s “rock.”
One never heard a peep about one, prior to the royal death. Sounds like a so-called PR blitz to me.
One might think perhaps a certain PR person might be looking to raise one’s status in the media. The Murdoch family is from Australia. Not unusual to think perhaps one who previously lived and worked in Australian doing so-called PR might have made friends with a certain ….. Australian media family.

Sophie has long been regarded as a safe pair of hands to the Queen: empathetic, a good listener, a sense of humor, and most importantly, discreet. IOW, Meghan’s polar opposite.
Over the years, HM told Sophie a lot. None of which was reported to Omid Scobie.

"Why couldn't the monarchy give them part-time status?"
I'm sure it would have been do-able, if Harry and Meg hadn't wanted to spend the other part of their time financially exploiting their royal status. If they'd just wanted to spend their time off living quietly in California, I doubt that would have been a problem, but licensing "Sussex Royal" crap and merching clothes they wore for official engagements was ever going to be part of their lives as working royals.
by Anonymous | reply 553 | September 15, 2022 8:30 PM |
Sophie has been close to the Queen since her daughter was born. Everybody who even vaguely follows the royal family knows that. Only the Megsters' fangurls in the US don't. And the Megster's problem wasn't that she was biracial - if she hadn't been biracial she would never have received approval to marry Harry - it's because she's a tacky, divorced D list American actress past her sell-by date with a dodgy past. Had Harry married a black Brit, she wouldn't have had a problem. Megster's a typical Ugly American who thinks she can lecture the world with all the wisdom she acquired in Hollywood.

R488 You bring the Scandinavian houses into play. Let’s see here. Sweden’s king took away the HRH’s of his five non-direct line grandchildren and declared they were private citizens. His younger daughter lives in America, but her husband refused all titles and lives as a private citizen. She goes to Sweden here and there to carry out some duties but isn’t monetizing her status. As a matter of fact, she’s pretty much a housewife.
Norway’s princess lost her HRH and cannot use her princess title. She’s the nutbag who cavorts with the “shaman” from Sacramento.
The Danish queen’s second son is active military, a brigadier general who is Denmark’s military attache to France. He gets to use his HRH.
And which path should the Harkles take, pray tell? No one in Scandinavia does the half-in half-out thing.
