It seems she really started putting on weight after the end of that "controversial" relationship with the police officer.

She's definitely packed on the pounds, however, being 5'7" woman with some inches to hide overt rolls of fat is a genetic benefit she has in her favor. However, would probably never wear those jeans and dress a bit differently. Her braids are kind of weird too but hey - she's got money and (some) talent; why would she really care what others think of her weight or wardrobe choices? Girl's gotta a right to be herself and not some pop/rock star ideal of what she *should* look like.
She's not Britney-level ridiculous. And has a hell of a lot more talent than that raccoon-eyed, bleached blonde extension, wearing shit that shows of her thick, no-waist body and the same brown pumps, twirling back and forth and pulling down her bottoms to show those obnoxious, incredibly immature/prison-worthy hip tattoos (which she probably did herself or had one of her stupid crew ink on her).
If she wants to be chubbed up, let her. There are worse things.

I agree R1, but the outfit is bad regardless of her weight gain. Tabloids labeled it as "casual" but it just looks awful—totally mismatched, badly-fitting jeans, and the pigtails are an odd addition.
You can see her brother and her dad in some of the photos. I find it interesting that she is photographed so often with her family members. She seems to be very close to them (especially her sister, who does a lot of her publicity photography). It is unusual—and frankly, kind of refreshing—to see a celebrity who is that close with their family. She has made it explicitly clear that she's estranged from her mom though. I have to wonder what her dad's perspective is on that.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 9, 2022 5:19 AM |
There were some really unflattering photos of her during peak COVID that were posted on here, and I remember someone commenting that she had the shoulders of a football player. I never noticed it when she was thinner, but she does have very broad shoulders for a woman.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 9, 2022 5:23 AM |
the mental health of a celebrity is always telling as to how mentally healthy they are. having family around (without it being all the damn time) seems like there is some good mental health going on, as long as they don't see overtly involved in the celebrity's "business" (whatever that may be). I'm saying this as an ongoing thing throughout time: if they treasure and are grateful for family despite all that is going on and they seem to be mentally and emotionally healthy otherwise. This doesn't include Britney for obvious reasons.
agree the wardrobe isn't the best choice, but then again, you have Harry Styles, Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo, Ezra Miller, Armie Hammer and a multitude of others I could mention.

It's the shade of her being at an event called the "Malibu Chili Cook-Off" for me. That sounds like a fat joke: "Have you seen Lana del Rey? Ooh. Comin' to a chili cook-off near you!"
And then it...happened.

LOL R9. Yes. It’s not “Lana attends Malibu Chili Cook-Off”—it’s “Lana TAKES PART in” the Malibu Chili Cook-Off. The wording seems deliberately mean to me too.

R12 I don’t think Lana deserves any extreme ire—just some light poking here and there. She has contributed much more substance to the culture than all of the people you listed, and is one of the most interesting and prolific songwriters of her generation by miles. Unlike many of her peers, she is a legitimate artist and should be recognized for that.

R13 Kinda have to agree with you. I remember not thinking much of Lana when she first came out — that SNL performance was the equivalent of the Hindenburg — and she came off like an industry plant. But she became an actually interesting artist and arguably the unsung hero of the 2010s. She kind of put into motion this trend of moody, small voiced pop girls. You don’t get to Lorde, then Halsey, then Billie Eilish without Lana del Rey.

R23 she definitely came off as an industry plant and I do think there is more to her story than she lets on—I am 99% sure that the viral success of "Video Games" was calculated and created by Interscope, who swooped in and offered her a sweet deal when she was still an unknown indie artist. It explains her buying back the rights to her first album and pulling it from the internet, only to resurface hardly a year later as "Lana Del Rey" with a whole new album of glossier material and a revamped image. I'm sure she had creative license in all of this, but Interscope really helped make her over. I also don't buy her story that she came from nothing. Both her parents are educated, upper-class people. It's well-established that her domain investor dad has been loaded for quite some time (and, let's face it: very few people from a truly poor or even working-class background manage to hack their way into the Kent School and get a degree from Fordham).
All that being said, she deserves the success she's had because she does make great music, and a lot of it. There are few contemporary female pop artists who have managed to produce as large a body of work as she does in the time frame she's done it. She's more than proven herself to be a legitimate songwriter/musician. Her vision is always uniquely hers, and a hell of a lot more interesting than the pedestrian garbage that gets shat out by people like Beyonce or Taylor Swift. The fact that she's been nominated for as many Grammys as she has and has yet to win is ludicrous to me.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 9, 2022 12:49 PM |
She's talented and yes she came from money and it's very clear from her personality and obsession with WASPness. I don't care about that because so many artists come from money and there aren't that many rags to riches anymore. Even Madonna came from an upper middle-class family though she lied and acted like she came from the ghetto. Talent should matter the most when it comes to music and Lana proved her talent in songwriting.
As for her looks. DL mocks everyone and everything. So she's not special and immune to everything. Stans can't have it their way when they bash every other female artist but their fav.

R26- Well said.
I love Lana. To this day, I think that Honeymoon is her best album.
I am 43 and she just hits all the buttons for me.
Lana and Father John Misty (ironically the same label)/or were?) are my go-to's.
My old schools are Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Joni, and don't laugh- Oasis.
I am so glad that you brought up how prolific she is- The amount of material and music is staggering. She almost loses here elusive aura based on the sheer amount of music.
The only album that left me pretty cold was Lust For Life, and I wasn't a massive fan of Norman Fucking Rockwell (which is probably her most critically acclaimed album)
She seems like a good soul underneath whatever surgeries, and I find her stage fright/akwardness absolutely adorable. Her soul shines through. We cannot help how rich are parents are or aren't. And even if if you have rich parents and plastic surgery, you can still be a decent person.

Lana has the same build as my sister I talked about in the Florence Pugh thread. Tall, very broad shouldered and wide boned. She’s probably not even that overweight (5-10 pounds) but her build and unflattering way of dressing makes her look fatter than she is.
I also think she was likely starving herself or abusing drugs to be thin during her initial peak of popularity. That type of female body doesn’t lend itself to natural slimness.

To me Lana Del Rey is the only modern artist to come along that I've ever felt comparable to Bobbie Gentry. Neither of them sing songs, they perform short cinematic audio stories. They are melodramatic and their personas are both real and artifice. I only hope Lana doesn't withdraw like Bobbie.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 9, 2022 2:30 PM |
She plays the victim all the time and many people find it rightfully annoying. Same deal with Fiona Apple. Though in Fiona's defense, she's mentally ill. Lana has that "poor little rich girl" vibe that's not impressive to a lot of people. But overall LDR makes the music she wants and isn't chasing charts. She's definitely an artist but not for everyone and it's not being "misunderstood." She isn't the type of person most would like in a school setting.

Maybe she is a little kooky now but who wouldn’t be after living the past 16 or so years in the music industry? Shes herself and knowing that allows her freedom. She doesn’t have a stylist and pals around with her family. Shes made her millions, has put out great art and is living her life now. She probably stopped the meth, adderall and whatever else they force-feed starlets to stay slim. Shes closer to 40 than 30 and sometimes superficial things like looks take a backseat. I bet in person she basically looks average weight. It's just jarring to see a female celebrity who isn't extremely thin. Good for her.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 9, 2022 6:26 PM |
People call her gorgeous and beautiful but I just don't see it. She's not ugly or anything but she just looks like a slightly above average girl who can be pretty or cute depending on the style, makeup and lighting. She clearly would get as much dick as she pleases. Maybe she's more striking in person.
I definitely do think she's mentally ill and her IG and Twitter ramblings show that. I wish people would stop having her talk about politics or feminism. She's a bourgeois-bohemian like Julian Casablancas, she's only as liberal and free spirited as it suits her. She'll never turn against the social class she's from. Her type is a dime a dozen in the Northeast. The rich kid who slums it, lives like a hippy, does drugs and cosplays as different cultures or eras on their daddy's allowance. But hey, at least she's talented and creative about it.

What's interesting is she is not technically WASP but simply adjacent to that culture due to her NYC prep school days and inner circle. She does express pride in her Catholic heritage too. I legitimately never got a racist vibe from her. More of a elitist art school vibe but she seems fine with all races who are in the musical and creative field. I do see black influence in her work. Nina Simone and Billie Holliday and her love of hip-hop. She's apparently very humble and nice and she doesn't chase the paparazzi. She does say some ignorant or insensitive stuff but it seems more from her sheltered world rather than hostility. A lot of creative thinkers are the most narcissistic and socially awkward people around. She's a messed up person but she seems to admit to it. I never got why it was so offensive she made an album centered around a country club. That album was a fun twist on the lily white exclusivity of country clubs by adding a dark and neurotic underbelly that was closer to reality.
What's even more interesting is Beyonce is proud of her mixed Louisiana Creole heritage. Her mother Tina is a Creole of color who descends from the bourgeois upperclass of free people of color ancestry. Which were the equivalent of WASPs in the black population. In Beyoncé's Lemonade visual album, there were scenes of plantation mansions and French inspired fashion that was common among the Creole elite. Beyoncé did get outrage from some critics for perpetuating colorism in that. But realistically, the upperclass blacks were fair-skinned. Beyoncé is no songwriter but she and Lana both rub some people the wrong way and both have a glamorous image of hyper femininity.
On a side note, I'm black and always felt the Northern/Mid-Atlantic WASP and white Southern culture given it's roots to the 1600s and 1700s is counterpart to African American culture which is Anglophone and predominantly Protestant. The black upperclass was mostly Methodist, Episcopalian or Congregationalist and mainly lived on the East Coast and Southeast. I mean it's odd how white and black Americans with roots running to the 1600s pretend they aren't culturally alike. Foreigners even note this.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 9, 2022 8:20 PM |
Lana got dragged hard for her “racist” comments where she compares herself to several other female artists (who happened to be black) by claiming her passivity/femininity was criticized while those women’s more forthright, aggressive sexuality got praised. She had a point I guess, but she should’ve thought twice before posting that. She has also been targeted for “cultural appropriation”. I think this is extremely misguided and reductive though. It’s obvious she is an admirer of many black artists.

by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 9, 2022 8:31 PM |
R48 I remember that and cringed so hard. First , she didn't need to name drop those artists to get that point across that opened her to rage of crazy stans. Second, it came across as hypocritical because those artists still got criticized as anti-feminist for being oversexualized. She had a point but she didn't state it in a smart way. She also added kerosine to the fire by replying to every criticism she got from that post. I understand she'd be rightfully hurt by the racist accusations though.
Cultural appropriation is overused. Everyone in the world is guilty of it at many points. I really only consider dumbing down and stripping something of cultural significance to be a commercial product to be cultural appropriation. Like Native headdresses sold in stores or little Buddha or Krishna statues that are religious used to decorate a bohemian home. Hairstyles and fashion or slang aren't appropriation to me. Though I find it goofy and comical when people (white, Asian, Indian) wear durags or try to talk black vernacular because they don't know what they're doing. But it's far from outrage inducing.

At the end of the day, Lana seems to truly be in it for the art, which is respectable. She makes the music she wants and follows her instincts. A lot of the folky stuff she’s put out on her last couple of records is certainly never going to have major pull with the general public, but she’s cultivated enough of an audience that she can do what she wants at this point in her career.

Also unlike Taylor Swift, she's not crying to the media about everything and she doesn't appeal to just teenage girls with immature views on relationships. At least LDR will disappear and re-emerge and I think Lana does not pretend her music is empowering or anything. Taylor seems to think she's this great role model when her music is all repetitive suburban teen issues and arrested development.

by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 9, 2022 9:31 PM |
Britney is stuck in mid-2000s fashion. She looks like a hot mess the majority of the time. Lana, even when dressed WAY down, tends to go for a more timeless or vintage look. She has better taste.

Britney looked good in her wedding dresses and in gowns which shows she could pull off classy or minimalist housewife fashion if she wanted to. A bob or shoulder length hair and bangs maybe a darker shade could help. Less raccoon eyeliner. She's still attractive but has no fashion sense.

Similar to LDR. Brandon Flowers' songwriting captures a lot of old Americana too mainly the Southwest desert landscape and the loneliness and rugged individualism it takes to survive. He touched upon masculinity and sexuality as well. The first Killers album was inspired by glam and Britpop but they moved to this desolate cowboy Americana folk sound and grew strongly as artists. I can see parallels between Lana and The Killers.

Most recently, Del Rey accused media publications of taking her “well-intentioned and believe it or not liberal comments” on President Trump and the Capitol riot “out of context.” Her tweets reference magazine coverage of a Monday guest spot on BBC Radio 1′s “Future Sounds,” in which she told host Annie Mac that Trump “DOESN'T KNOW HE'S INCITING A RIOT.”
“I thought it was very, very clearly obvious that he knew what he was doing the whole way,” Mac replied, after which Del Rey continued:
“BECAUSE HE'S GOT DELUSIONS OF GRANDUER."

Every artist that's signed on is manufactured and molded to what is marketable. Many times it's the artist themselves who create the persona they put on for the public. They could be completely opposite in real life: David Bowie, Prince, Grace Jones, The Rolling Stones, etc.
The marginally talented Madonna become the biggest pop star by relying on multiple personas to generate publicity. Britney Spears sold on her controversial image not her singing ability. Harry Styles is all manufactured retro tribute act yet sold a ton. Gwen Stefani the chameleon sold a bunch for a period. One of the biggest punk bands The Sex Pistols had little talent but their image sold.
Why is it shocking that those with talent like Lana and Gaga also created personas to get famous? Clearly it works.

I was a little ambivalent when she first burst onto the scene, and think Born to Die is maybe her weakest album in some respects, but Lana totally won me over as she began releasing one superb album after another. She’s one of the few current artists I find genuinely interesting and talented and whose music will stand the test of time. The initial backlash and character assassination she got from the press and public obviously burned her, but she doubled down and just focused on making the music she wanted to make. Respect.

Each of her albums post-“Born to Die” were a lot more mature and sophisticated, lyrically and musically. “Born to Die” is a good album, but out of her entire discography, it’s the one I revisit probably the least. I think her 2010 indie record “Lana Del Ray aka Lizzy Grant” (recorded before she got picked up and revamped by Interscope) is better than “Born to Die”—it didn’t have the mainstream appeal to catapult her into any considerable fame, but the songs on there are unique and very atmospheric.

She's clearly talented. she's no Britney.

Like so many of today's 'singers', this woman cannot sing for shit.
LDR was awful on SNL. For me, if any musical performer cannot cut it live, I don't bother. I enjoy singers who can actually sing.
People like this having any level of success makes me wonder, what actually constitutes talent these days?

R82 that was 10 fucking years ago. She was pretty much starting out, got nervous and gave a shit performance. She’s more than made up for it in the decade since. Keep with the times.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | September 13, 2022 6:38 PM |
She's still more of a studio artist than a performer. The voice is barely there.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | September 13, 2022 6:42 PM |
Hell, thanks to Jessica Simpson's sister, LDR was far from the worst performance in SNL history. At least she didn't break out in a jig.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | September 13, 2022 7:51 PM |
I loved this one. She’s not a dynamic live performer, she just stands and sings and can look a bit awkward, but to me she sounds great. No gimmicks and there’s a lot of heart to her songs. I could listen to her all day actually.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | September 13, 2022 9:10 PM |
Meh. She will do a crash diet and hit the gym and be thin again soon.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | September 13, 2022 9:17 PM |
Am I the only person who thought her SNL debut was just fine?!? Yeah she was a little frozen in place, but she sang fine.
Am I also the only person who sees this thread title & sings the opening bars of Mariner’s Apartment Complex?
by Anonymous | reply 93 | September 13, 2022 11:35 PM |
Her music just isn't conducive to live performance. But, the recordings are unworldly.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | September 14, 2022 1:08 AM |
A lot of singer songwriters aren't good singers. Bob Dylan and Alicia Keys come to mind. Their lyrics, instrumentals and artistry is what is used to carry them. Many great singers can't write songs or play instruments. Writing and singing are two completely different fields. Lana sounds otherworldly in recordings.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | September 14, 2022 3:03 AM |
R95 Otherworldly is the word I was searching for but I'm high and my cat was screaming.

She's 37. So weight gain is going to be inevitable with age as a woman and it could be genetics. She's on antidepressants too I think so that doesn't help. She can lose the weight if she wants too. It's not obesity. She'll probably just need to cut out the sugar.

by Anonymous | reply 108 | September 14, 2022 5:07 PM |
Everyone throws "fat" around so much. It's not odd millennial stars who are now 40 or pushing it have gained weight especially after they've settled down and had kids. Then you have Janet and Madonna who are elderly now (many DLers can't stand this because it reminds them of their age), so they've just packed on pounds. I understand being critical of people like Lena Dunham, Nikocado and Lizzo who are young and very unhealthy. But Lana, Britney, Beyonce and Christina gaining natural weight with age is not odd. At least they aren't like Victoria Beckham or the Olsens who are anorexic and look unhealthy.
by Anonymous | reply 109 | September 14, 2022 8:08 PM |
Lana and Lizzo are much the same age.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | September 14, 2022 8:10 PM |
R110 I keep forgetting Lizzo is 34. She looks and acts much younger though. Lana being thick or chubby is nothing compared to Lizzo's obesity. Lizzo blessed with a very pretty face.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | September 14, 2022 8:15 PM |
Lana now looks like every frau that shops at old navy. In the plus size section.

by Anonymous | reply 113 | September 14, 2022 10:49 PM |
Most of her fans are mid to late millennials or early Zoomers who were there when mixtapes, Tumblr and MySpace were popular hubs for lesser known artists. Lana, Odd Future, Drake, The Weeknd, Tinashe, Mac Demarco, Halsey, Jhene Aiko, Hayley Kiyoko, etc come to mind. Had internet followings before they blew up.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | September 14, 2022 11:01 PM |

She’s probably not more than a size 10. Again, she had the kind of build (broad shouldered and blunt boned) that makes a woman look fatter than she is. Narrow women with smaller bones at her same weight would obviously look a lot thinner.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | September 15, 2022 2:45 PM |
I don’t care if an artist gets fat. Or if anyone gets fat. It’s weird how people are still obsessed with the fat content of other peoples bodies. It is a pathetic obsession.

by Anonymous | reply 120 | September 15, 2022 5:34 PM |
R120 Women's clothing is so unstandardized I bet it is a ten in some brands. My mother wears a size 12, or she thought she did. I bought her a pair of slacks tagged as size 12 but once she tried putting them on they were at least three sizes too big. However her other size 12 clothing fits just fine.

by Anonymous | reply 122 | September 15, 2022 8:51 PM |
But how does FAT fit into her persona and pre-existing aesthetic? Also, she went to laughable lengths to hide it in stills and videos. I really think everyone would be better off if she were thin.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | September 15, 2022 8:54 PM |
R122 True but while thinness can be a negative health issue, obesity is always unhealthy.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | September 15, 2022 10:55 PM |
Being chubby or slightly overweight isn't lethal. Being overweight is unhealthy can be dangerous. Obesity is always dangerous and absolutely a concern. Americans always see things in a polarized light. People get chubby when they aren't keeping up with exercise or get self-indulgent or they're aging and the metabolism breaks down. That's not a failure as it's easy to burn the fat. But becoming overweight is from long-term bad habits and obesity is the result of lack of discipline and self-love.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | September 16, 2022 3:10 AM |
R25, no, Lana definitely has talent.
She wrote this song "Young And Beautiful". I heard it sung by this young singer whose voice I actually prefer over Lana's version. However, the songwriting by Lana is phenomenal.

I am (sort of) surprised by the claims that Lana is bipolar and on lithium, though I suppose that could explain the weight gain. She has always seemed mentally ill, but I never would've thought bipolar. She certainly seems depressive, but I don't know about manic.

Lana's new apparent boyfriend (?) is Jack Donoghue, who was in an underground cult band called Salem in the 2010s. He is a notorious drug addict and has always presented himself as a mangy redneck, so it's not exactly surprising she'd shack up with him. He also has openly fucked men, specifically his male bandmate in Salem, who is also quite clearly troubled/a drug addict with a multitude of issues. There are photos of him hanging out with Courtney Love in a hotel room circa 2010 which are truly cursed images. I suspect Courtney saw a lot of her late husband in him. He is hot, but he seems like a truly damaged person.

Forget her weight for a second, it’s the plastic surgery face I find the most distracting. That mug goes well beyond injectables and betrays serious work. by Anonymous | reply 136 | September 16, 2022 2:15 PM |
Lana Del Rey is one of the most talented female artists today and one of the very few female artists today that is an actual artist. Her body of work is simply incredible. Album after album of beautifully crafted songs. I could listen to her forever and never get bored. Britney Spears was never an artist. Her music was cheap, manufactured bubblegum pop. To compare the two is an affront to good taste.

by Anonymous | reply 138 | September 16, 2022 2:47 PM |
R137 is correct. Britney is a show woman, not an artist. Lana is an actual singer-songwriter with some brains and musical talent. Britney couldn’t write a good lyric to save her life. Comparing the two is apples and oranges.

R137 Britney can’t even write a coherent social media caption much less a song.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | September 16, 2022 4:52 PM |
I think Lana likes Britney for her image and hyperfemininity. The tragic Southern backwoods girl who was used and exploited by everyone including her family. Lana is obsessed with young tragic women and men similar to gay men.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | September 16, 2022 5:13 PM |
She likes men similar to gay men? That must explain why she is shacked up with Jack.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | September 16, 2022 5:38 PM |
Jack is hot in a really trashy, cigarette breath back-alley quickie kind of way. But you’d need a long shower and swift visit to the sexual health clinic afterward. It’s not the ideal relationship for someone like Lana, but there will probably be some great albums come of it.

R148 remember when the internet lost their minds after she shared her birth time and confirmed she was a Cancer, not a Gemini? I am not a *major* adherent of astrology, but I do have a Cancer sun and a lot of other Cancer placements in my birth chart, and I always connected with her music for some strange reason, even though I couldn't relate to a lot of what she sings about.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | September 17, 2022 1:47 AM |
R147 Lana was born in NYC, but she was raised way upstate in the Adirondacks. She went to college at Fordham in the Bronx, but her upbringing was way more country. Lens was a Manhattanite from birth onward.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | September 17, 2022 2:37 AM |
R142 I think you're right. Artistically, there is zero similarity between them whatsoever, aside from the fact that they both lean into their femininity (albeit in VERY different ways). Lana's music, especially her earlier records, were very dark and death-obsessed. She also emotes a lot when she performs and barely moves, whereas Britney is a choreographed ventriloquist dummy onstage. Lana's music is characterized by profound longing, and it doesn't register as artifice to me in the slightest. I kind of wish she'd go back to her pre-fame days and do a stripped-down record with just her and a guitar.

As a public figure, Lana needs to keep herself up better than that, though. I could see if she just had kids or something, but that's not just weight-gain-due-to-age. That's depression/binge-eating weight. Plus, you can't be built like Wal-Mart frau and then dress like a teenage girl on her way to the mall and wonder why people point out your weight.

She's back to about the same size she was when she broke around 2011, except older now, obviously. She got a bit thicker for awhile but her weight didn't really blow up until COVID. There were numerous paparazzi shots of her carrying bags of food during that time, so I think she was probably stress eating. She lost about half her body weight though in short timespan, so I have no doubts she was one of the countless Ozempic-ers.

Lana went off a few weeks back on a fan because she asked her not to post a photo they took together in a grocery store in LA . I'm not sure what she expected to be honest, but I'm assuming she requested it so the paparazzi wouldn't know she was in town. She could've just asked her to wait a few days before sharing it. It seems she's mostly living in the south now with her new man.

R175 the weird thing is that she is usually extremely gracious and kind to her fans. Maybe things have changed as she's gotten older and more jaded toward the celebrity fame engine.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | April 6, 2025 3:44 AM |
She is usually very nice, and I suspect she was being nice by even taking the photo in the first place and hoping the fan would keep her promise not to share it on social media and keep it just for herself and friends/family.
Because she shared it, people know where Lana is and where she shops. She could have just said no to the photo, but then she would have been seen as bad too. It's sad, really.
